FIFTH PLACE FOR BMX RACER MOLLY SIMPSON AT PARIS 2024

Paris, FRA (August 2, 2024) – Molly Simpson of Red Deer, Alberta made Canadian BMX racing history with a fifth-place finish at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games finals on August 2. This is the best women’s result for Canada.

After a near-perfect day in qualifying on August 1, where she posted consecutive top-3 finishes in each of her rounds to accumulate a total of seven points. The 21-year-old, in her very first Olympic experience, was able to finish in fourth place thanks to soaring starts, which put her in good stead for the semi-finals on August 2.

“I’m so excited,” she commented after the first day of competition. “I’m so happy and grateful to be here, this experience is amazing. I’m just following my process, and this is how I can give my best. I’m just trying to soak it all in.”

Finishing second, fourth and fifth in her semi-final rounds, Simpson made it through to the final, finishing seventh in the standings, where the top eight finishers qualified.

It was with another strong start that Simpson climbed to the front of the race, forming the top 4, before being overtaken in extremis by Dutch rider Laura Smulders, just missing out on the podium to finish fifth.

“I’m overwhelmed with emotions,” commented Molly after her final race. “I’m happy and grateful. Of course, I would have loved to medal, but for my first Games, to be fifth is cool, and getting through those semifinals was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, so to be in the top eight was just amazing. It’s only the beginning for me, I’ve worked so hard. We’re in a good spot and we’ll just keep going.”

Australia’s Saya Sakakibara took top honors, followed by the Netherlands’ Manon Veenstra in silver and Switzerland’s Zoe Claessens in bronze.

With her fifth place, Simpson equaled the best Canadian result in the discipline, while Tory Nyhaug had also come fifth at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on the men’s side.

Further information, including results and the full schedule of events, is available at olympics.com. Competition for Team Canada cyclists continue on August 3, when Derek Gee and Mike Woods will be in action in the men’s road race.

The first Canadian representative in the discipline, Whaley’s mission was to qualify among the top nine riders to advance to the final on July 31. “It’s been the hardest four weeks of my life, both physically and mentally,” mentioned Whaley, only a few weeks after shoulder surgery.  “Not only did I have to get back on my bike after my injury, but I also had tough practices after two crashes and a collision, which broke both my wheels. It was tough, but I made two full runs and missed the finals by one position. For me, it’s a victory, so I’m leaving with my head held high.”

Britain’s Kieran Darren David Reilly qualified in first place with a score of 91.21. He was followed by American Marcus Christopher (89.48) and Australian Logan Martin (89.39).

Further information, including results and a full schedule of events, is available at olympics.com. Competition for Team Canada cyclists continues on August 1, with Molly Simpson in BMX racing action.

NEW AND RETURNING CHAMPIONS DON THE MAPLE LEAF JERSEY AT THE CANADIAN BMX CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ottawa, ON (July 8, 2024) – More than 600 athletes challenged themselves in Vaudreuil-Soulanges, QC, for the Canadian BMX Championships, held on July 6.

Under a blazing sun, athletes took part in two exciting days of competition with the Canadian Championships on Saturday, followed by the first round of the Canada Cup on Sunday.

Ryan Tougas of Pitt Meadows, B.C., was the only athlete to retain the Canadian Elite Men’s title he won in 2023, with the other categories all crowning a new champion, including Teigen Pascual of Squamish, B.C., who captured her first Canadian Elite Women’s title.

In the U23 category, Albertans Dylan Tremel and Abygale Reeve made no secret of their pride, having long dreamed of wearing the maple-leaf jersey.

“Out of the gate I was nervous,” said Tremel. “I knew I had to stay calm and confident. It was crazy to cross the finish line, with all my family and friends there. I have wanted to get the sleeve for the past four years and it means the absolute world to me.”

Reeve added, “I was crying tears of joy. It just means a lot to represent this country and to represent my club in Airdrie and all the kids that I coach back there.”

Quebecers Thessalie Bruneau and Victoria Dubé crossed the finish line nose-to-nose in the junior women’s race, but in the end, it was Bruneau who took the honors. Ontario’s Andrew Colling took the men’s title.

In addition to the Championship classes, medals were awarded in Challenge classes for age group racing from as young as 5 years old. The full results list can be found here.

Next up on the Canadian Championships calendar are the Canadian MTB XCO/XCC Championships in Kentville, NS and the Canadian Road Championships (Masters) in Victoria, BC, both on July 19-21. The full calendar of national events can be found on the Events Page of the Cycling Canada website.

VAUDREUIL-SOULANGES WELCOMES CANADIAN BMX CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ottawa, ON (July 5, 2024) – BMX athletes from across the country are expected in Vaudreuil-Soulanges, Quebec, on July 6 for the Canadian BMX Racing Championships.

Held in Quebec for the second year running, the event will host races in the challenge category where close to 600 athletes, ranging in age from 5 to 49, will race for medals, while athletes in the Junior, U23 and Elite categories will race for official championship titles.

“After the success of the 2022 Canada Cup here, it was the next logical step to organize the Canadian Championships,” commented Karyne Brodeur, president of the Vaudreuil-Soulanges BMX club. “We want to give young people the opportunity to perform in a national-level competition, in addition to raising the profile of our sport.”

Ryan Tougas (elite men), Thomas Jodoin (U23 men) and Keira Murphy (U23 women) will be on hand to try and claim the Canadian championship title for the second year running.

Absent due to her preparation for the Olympic Games, Molly Simpson will pass the torch to a new racer who will be in with a chance of capturing the title of Canadian champion in the elite women’s category, while her compatriot Teigen Pascual will be a strong contender for the position.

On Sunday, July 7, athletes will race in the first round of the 2024 BMX Canada Cup series.

SHOWING OF PASSION AT UCI BMX WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ottawa, ON (May 21, 2024) – Team Canada showed resilience at the 2024 UCI BMX Racing World Championships in Rock Hill, USA.

Despite bad luck – including crashes and collisions in the various rounds, the Canadian athletes were nevertheless satisfied with their performances. Ryan Tougas, of Pitt Meadows, BC, scored Canada’s best result with a 12th position in the Elite Men category, after being edged out in semi-finals.

“What an emotional roller coaster, through the mud, the blood and the tears,” commented National Team Coach Adam Muys. “I’m so proud of our athletes, they raced hard and with passion. Thanks to our team for having them on form. We had the speed; we just didn’t get the breaks. We’ll carry on and come back stronger.”

Thomas Jodoin (U23 Men) of Trois-Rivières, QC, Thessalie Bruneau (Junior Women) of La Tuque, QC, Emily Bell (Junior Women) of Nanoose Bay, BC, and Molly Simpson (Elite Women) of Red Deer, AB, all made it through the quarterfinals, where they saw their 2024 World Championships journey come to an end.

Expected to reach the final, Simpson, who had achieved two fourth place finishes in the World Cup earlier this year, was the victim of a collision, shattering her chances of advancing further.

VARGA AND TRANG WIN CANADIAN BMX FREESTYLE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ottawa, ON (Oct. 28, 2023) – The first Canadian BMX Freestyle Champions after a three-season hiatus were determined in Markham, ON, on Oct. 27, 2023.

With world-class riders on the start list, the title of Canadian Champion was up for grabs in the elite men’s category. After qualifying in first place, Mike Varga of Ontario finally snuck to the top of the podium. He was joined on the podium by Quebecers Maxime Chalifour and Jeffrey Whaley, taking silver and bronze respectively.

“I love to ride at Joyride150,” said Varga. “Having this event here means a lot to us and we haven’t had Canadian Championships in a while, so having this here and doing it for the local community is pretty good. I enjoyed just riding my bike, having fun, everyone is coming out of this event safe and we’re eager to get BMX on the map!”

Scoring to win on the women’s field was Beatrice Trang from Ontario. With this win, she hopes to inspire younger generations of females to hop on their bike and try BMX Freestyle.

“I think this is something we need in Canada,” added Trang. “I’m really looking forward to seeing this grow and hopefully for women’s BMX to grow. It’s only up from here!”
