Coach Education

The National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) is the Coaching Association of Canada’s flagship program, and has been identified as a world leader in coach education. The NCCP gives coaches the confidence to succeed and is designed & delivered in partnership with the government of Canada, provincial/territorial governments, and national/provincial/territorial sport organizations.

Cycling Canada’s Education Portal

All courses offered by Cycling Canada can be accessed through our education portal. Setting up an account on the portal is free, and courses completed on the platform are synced with The Locker. Courses offered include specific eLearning modules, Skills & Tactics Theory, Training to Race, various professional development opportunities, as well as portfolio evaluations. The portal, through the “Tools” tab, also serves as a library for previously hosted webinars and resources.

Cycling has three NCCP coaching contexts, depending on the level of coaching; Let’s Ride! Community Initiation; Ready to Race! Introduction to Competition and Performance Cycling, Competition Development.

Let’s Ride! targets coaches who will primarily work with novice and pre-competitive cyclists at the community level, including participants in the Active Start, FUNdamentals and early Learn to Train stages of Athlete Development.

In Training

  1. Cycling Foundations eLearning(1 hour asynchronous delivery)
    • A 1-hour on-demand module to help community and club coaches learn about the NCCP pathway, access a fillable portfolio document used through the education journey.
  2. NCCP Make Ethical Decisions & Evaluation(4 hours synchronous delivery & 1 hour asynchronous delivery)
    • By successfully completing the NCCP Make Ethical Decisions training, coaches will be fully equipped to handle ethical situations with confidence and surety. The training helps coaches identify the legal, ethical, and moral implications of difficult situations that present themselves in the world of team and individual sport.  This course is delivered through your Provincial/Territorial coaching association.
  3. NCCP Emergency Action Plan(30 minute asynchronous delivery)
    • The NCCP Emergency Action Plan Module prepares coaches to respond calmly, quickly, and effectively if a sport participant is seriously injured during practice or competition.  This course can be accessed through the Locker.
  4. Cycling Practice Planning(2×2 hours synchronous delivery)

Trained

  1. Basic Cycling Skills(8 hours in person delivery)
    • This outdoor practice teaching module takes place in a closed environment (parking lot, field) and helps you practice instructing and coaching for the first time. This course is delivered through your Provincial/Territorial cycling association.

Ready to Race! Introduction to Competition (R2R) is the context for coaches who will primarily work with new competitive cyclists at the community and club level. These athletes will likely be in the Learn to Train to Train to Train stages of LTAD, although the context could apply to any new racer of any age.
*The Ready to Race! Evaluations are administered by Cycling Canada

    • This module includes an overview of NCCP Teaching and Learning, as well as NCCP Planning a Practice. It is intended for the context of coaching youth or adult learn to ride programs. Completion of this module will also credit you for completion of Cycling Practice Planning module in the Community Initiation pathway. This course is delivered by Cycling Canada.

Trained

  1. Basic Cycling Skills(8 hours in person delivery)

  2. Skills and Tactics Practical (8 hours in person delivery)
  3. NCCP Sport Nutrition (1 hour asynchronous delivery)
    • The NCCP Sport Nutrition module helps coaches understand how to support athletes and their parents or caregivers in making effective nutrition choices.  This course can be accessed through the Locker.
  4. Training to Race (6×2 hours synchronous delivery)
    • This module includes an overview of NCCP Design a Basic Sports Program, as well as NCCP Basic Mental Skills in the context of preparing an annual training plan for youth club athletes or active for life adult athletes.  This course is delivered by Cycling Canada.

  • 20 points every 5 years

Performance Cycling is the training context in which coaches of athletes who are at the end of the Train to Train stage and the Train to Compete stage, i.e. athletes who participate in national competitions and starting to participate in international competitions. At this level, athletes have a very high volume of training and competition.

NCCP coaches are described as follows:
In Training – when they have completed some of the required training for a context
Trained – when they have completed all required training for a context;
Certified – when they have completed all evaluation requirements for a context.

In an effort to increase the level of interaction between cycling coaches across the country, Cycling Canada is now offering professional development opportunities for coaches of all levels.
