SUCCESSFUL WEEKEND FOR CANADIAN BMX RIDERS IN TEXAS

Team breaks the ground of 2014 season with success from all categories

(Ottawa, ON – April 7, 2014) The Canadian BMX team kicked off its 2014 season this past weekend at the BMX Texas US Cup in DeSoto, Texas, USA, and the team fared extremely well with some great results in many categories.

“I am very excited with the progress that the team has made. They had a great power block over the winter, and we went to California to sharpen up our skills,” said Ken Cools, Head Coach of the Canadian National BMX team. This weekend was the pre-race for the season ahead as the racing heads on. Now, the training shifts to get race feelings and get crisper on the track and at the gate with a whole bunch of people. This is just the beginning and a great way to start.”

“The team has not had any outdoor race sessions this winter,” added Ken Cools “The name of the game is to shake off the cobwebs early in the season, and the team did just that this weekend.”

On Saturday, Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam, BC raced to the second place of the Elite Men podium, finishing only behind Sam Willoughby, the 2012 World Champion and 2012 Olympic silver medallist. Nyhaug, ranked in sixth place of the Supercross world rankings, won the bronze medal just last week at the UCI Continental Championships in Chula Vista, marking an excellent start to the campaign ahead.

Still in the Elite men category, James (Jimmy) Brown of Airdrie, AB finished fifth in the Sunday race, an exceptional result as he is just coming off a 10-month rest period without training after a sustaining an injury just prior to the 2013 World Championships.

The Elite women rode well throughout the weekend. Notably, Amelia Walsh of Ayr ON, the reigning Elite Women Canadian Champion, finished eighth on Sunday.

Racing in the junior women category, Drew Mechielsen of Langley, BC rode all the way to the elite finals on Sunday, finishing an excellent fifth place. On Saturday, she made it to the semi-finals. Mechielsen was ranked second overall of the junior women, both days. At the 2013 UCI World Championships, Mechielsen finished in eighth position of the U16 race.

Reigning Boys U15 World Champion Alex Tougas of Pitt Meadows, BC remained undefeated throughout the weekend, easily winning both his races, on Saturday and Sunday.

In a stacked field of the A pro category, Misha Partridge of Port Coquitlam, BC raced all the way to the finals on Sunday. His day ended early after a crashed in the second turn. Despite the crash, Partridge finished seventh of the main.

The 2014 UCI BMX Supercross season starts on April 18 in Manchester, GBR.

CYCLING NATIONAL TEAM LIST UNVEILED

Ottawa, Feb. 6, 2014 – Cycling Canada has unveiled the list of 129 athletes who have been nominated to the 2014 National Team List.

Click here to see the list.

Athletes are nominated to the list based on Sport Canada carding status, 2013 results, selection to 2013 world championships and discretionary nominations by the National Coaches.

The list is divided into three tiers, which help determine priority access to National Team coaching, equipment, sport science services and funding.

National Team List status does not guarantee selection to National Team projects, which are open to all eligible Canadian athletes.

The published list shows nominations only. In order to confirm their National Team List status, athletes must share their yearly training plans with the National Coaches, complete the UCI True Champion or Cheat anti-doping education program and commit to Cycling Canada’s Code of Conduct. The same requirements will apply to any athlete selected to represent Canada.

CYCLING QUADRENNIAL PLANS UNVEILED

(Ottawa, On – Oct. 25, 2013) – A clear vision for the future is crucial to success in sport. After each Olympic Games Cycling Canada produces a new quadrennial plan, which guides the key decisions for the following four years to help ensure we meet our goals.

This living document is updated each year until a new one is produced after the next Olympics.

Cycling is complex, with five sports divided into dozens of disciplines, each of which has its own challenges. Cycling Canada has developed an overview quadrennial plan as well as a plan for track, road, mountain bike, BMX and para-cycling.

NYHAUG UNBEATABLE AT CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS, WALSH ENDS PERFECT WEEKEND

Both Nyhaug and Walsh repeat victories at Canadian BMX Championships

(St-Albert, AB – August 24, 2013) Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam, BC won his sixth Canadian title since turning Elite, while Amelia Walsh of Ayr, ON completed a perfect weekend on the St-Albert BMX track at the 2013 Canadian BMX Championships.

Nyhaug rode a clean race in the main event, staying outside of trouble from the start to finish. With the victory, the young BMX star now shows a perfect record of six Canadian titles in as many races since joining the elite category three years ago.

“I couldn’t be happier [to get the sixth title]. I did what I wanted to do. Got some clean laps and got a really good start in the main, probably the best lap of the week for me,” said Nyhaug, of his accomplishment.

“I think the only pressure I feel is the pressure I put on myself to perform. Obviously I have some expectations on myself. I always love to come back to Canada and race, an opportunity I don’t get too often. I didn’t really think of the titles I’ve won the past – I just took it one lap at a time.”

“The sport is definitely growing in Canada. Since the Olympics, the sport has grown significantly worldwide. Watching the kids here, there is a lot of talent. I hope these kids stay inspired to stick with the sport.”

James Palmer crossed the line in second place of the action-packed final, while Connor McCormack took the third spot.

In the women’s race, Amelia Walsh rode away with her career first BMX title, after winning the time trial title last night on the same track in St-Albert. The two-time defending champion Sabrina Millman did not race as she was nursing a concussion she suffered on Thursday while training.

“I am pretty happy. Like I said yesterday, I haven’t had a Canadian Championships title prior to coming here, winning both here makes me pretty happy. I want to keep moving forward with my racing, and become Top 20 in the world, hopefully next year,” said Walsh. “I wanted to be aggressive down the first straight, and keep my line in the corners.”

“It was kind of disappointing to hear about Sabrina’s crash [in training]. I look forward to seeing her back here next year,” continued Walsh.

Chelsea Kingston followed behind Walsh for the second place, while Rosemary Adams rode to the third place.

In the junior category, it was once more an affair of the McAdam twin sisters, with Morgan McAdam taking the title and Elaine McAdam crossing in second place just behind her sister. Michelle Berti was third. The junior men title was won by Jared Ennis, with Mackay Leslie and Braden Wood crossing the line in second and third places.

Sunday will feature races of the BMX Canada Cup Series, and some regional races.

NYHAUG WINS THIRD STRAIGHT TIME TRIAL TITLE, WALSH FINALLY EARNS RED AND WHITE

2013 Canadian BMX Championships begin in St-Albert, AB

(St-Albert, AB – August 23, 2013) Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam, BC, successfully defended his time trial title at the 2013 Canadian BMX Championships in St-Albert, Alberta, while Amelia Walsh of Ayr, ON won her first elite title in the women’s race.

Nyhaug, which finished a remarkable fifth place at the 2013 UCI BMX World Championships after recovering from injuries, travelled the superb track in a stellar time of 30.98 seconds to win his third consecutive Championships time trial race.

“I am happy to win the time trial. I just wanted to come here and have a clean lap, focussing on the back side,” said Nyhaug, who just flew back from Berlin where he competed at an industry event. “I was definitely happy to get a fifth at the worlds, especially coming back from an injury. The way it played out, I felt like I could have stepped on the podium, but its racing and I am happy with being fifth in the world.”

Since turning elite, Nyhaug won all five Championships races in which he took part, clearly establishing himself as the rider to beat.

“Tomorrow is more or less the same as today. I want to focus on the little things, riding my race with clean laps and hopefully win again tomorrow,” added Nyhaug, who represented Canada at the Olympic Games last summer.

James Palmer finished in second place with a time of 32.41 seconds, while Connor McCormack took the third place at 32.84 seconds.

In the women’s race, Amelia Walsh rode away with the time trial title, posting the fastest time of 37.64 seconds, improving from her second place last year. In winning the race, Walsh earned her career first red and white jersey.

“I am super proud. It took me a while to get the red jersey. I haven’t done it yet in my career, and I was pretty stoked,” said Walsh, who finished 24th at the recent World Championships representing Canada. “I love the track here. It’s kind of long, but it pushes your limits. It’s kind of a mini supercross track. The jumps are a little bit smaller, and it’s got a nice start hill that’s a little bit like a supecross track.”

“[Winning] was definitely my objective coming here, especially after the World Championships which were kind of a bummer, and it’s good to be back on,” continued Walsh, who plans to race the supercross race at Chula Vista later this fall.

In second place of the women’s elite race came Chelsea Kingston with a time of 38.24 seconds. Rosemary Adams rounded up the podium with the third fastest time of the day of 38.83 seconds.

In the junior category, Elaine McAdam won the time trial race in the women’s race at 38.34 seconds, topping her sister Morgan McAdam and Erin Kinnie in second and third place respectively. Tanner Vandenhoven won the men’s race with a time 33.84 seconds, crossing the line just 0.07 second before Braden Wood and 0.09 second Hayden Mechielsen.

The competition is held on the newly refurbished track in St-Albert with brand new paved corners, a well-loved track from the group of riders.

The competition resumes tomorrow with the BMX motos and main races at the Canadian Championships.
