INJURED TORY NYHAUG TO MISS UCI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Nyhaug still in hospital after crash in Papendal, suffering from a ruptured spleen
 
(Ottawa, ON – May 22, 2012) Canadian BMX rider Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam, BC sustained injuries in the men’s Supercross finals two weeks ago, in Papendal, Netherlands, while competing at the third UCI BMX Supercross race of the 2012 season.
 
As a result of the injuries, Nyhaug has been withdrawn from the Canadian entry for the upcoming UCI World Championships to be held in Birmingham, Great Britain.
 
“Tory is a very resilient and determined individual, he is an athlete that is targeted for 2016 but if there is any chance he can be ready for August 2012 there is no doubt in my mind that Tory, his family and his team of medical and training experts will pull out all stops to make the summer of 2012 happen for Tory,” said Jacques Landry, High Performance Director at the Canadian Cycling Association.
 
In the crash that occurred on the third straight of the Olympic Training Centre BMX track in Papendal, Nyhaug suffered a ruptured spleen, and has been hospitalized. Nyhaug remains to this date for observations and continued medical care.
 
The date for Nyhaug’s release from hospitalization is still undetermined.

CANADIAN BMX SQUAD READY TO TAKE ON THE WORLD

UCI BMX World Championships held in Birmingham, GBR from May 25-27

(Ottawa, ON – May 4, 2012) With less than three months to go before the 2012 Olympic Games, the Canadian BMX team is ready to rock at the 2012 UCI BMX World Championships.

The Canadian team is vying to secure a second spot for Canada at the Olympic Games, and the 2012 UCI BMX World Championships will be a critical event to achieve the goal.

“Our men and women are ready to deliver some great performances. Tory [Nyhaug] is consistently in the Top 5 at UCI Supercross events, in both BMX and Time Trial races,” said Adam Muys, head coach of the Canadian BMX squad. “The program is going in the right direction and with the recent successes of Tory at various events across the World, we see the tide changing with lots of positives around the Canadian BMX program.”

The UCI BMX World Championships will be held in Birmingham, Great Britain, from May 25-27, 2012.
The World Championships will feature racing for World titles in both BMX and Time Trials, for men and women in the elite and junior categories.

The Time Trial races for all categories, including the TT Superfinals, will be held on Friday, May 25, followed by the BMX World Championships rounds on Saturday May 26.

Prior to the UCI World Championships, the Canadian squad will have one more opportunity to score some precious Olympic qualifications points at the third event of the 2012 BMX SuperCross Tour in Papendal, Netherlands May 12-13.

The venue for the 2012 UCI BMX World Championships will be indoor, at the National Indoor Arena (NIA). The NIA is one of the busiest, large scale indoor sporting and entertainment venues in Europe. Since opening in 1991, it has welcomed visitors to over 30 different sports, as well as an extensive variety of entertainment and music.

TORY NYHAUG GRABS SEVENTH PLACE IN SUPERCROSS AFTER CRASH IN FINAL STRETCH

(Randaberg, NOR – April 14, 2012) BMX rider Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam, BC finished in seventh place in the Supercross Finals on Saturday in Norway in a dramatic final with two crashes, with one including Nyhaug meters before the finish line.

Nyhaug was on his way to a third place, side by side with Liam Phillips of Great Britain, and his first podium on the UCI BMX Supercross Tour. Disaster struck in the final stretch as Nyhaug crashed on the second last jump, only meters before the finish line. Phillips collided with Nyhaug as they were in the final portion of the last turn, and both riders were propelled to the ground, crashing hard at high speed.

“I am really happy about my positioning today, and for the fact that I have been in two finals this year. Of course I am a little bit bummed about the crash in the final straight as it could have been my first career podium,” said Nyhaug.

Nyhaug got up from the crash and finished the race, and has not injured. Nyhaug will pursue Olympic preparations as planned.

Nyhaug easily qualified in the quarterfinals, winning his round, and then went on to take the second place in the semi-final to advance in the final showdown.

American rider Connor Fields, who posted the fastest time in the time trials yesterday, went on to win his third straight Supercross victory. So far in 2012, Fields has not lost a Supercross race nor a Time Trial Superfinals on the UCI BMX Supercross tour, and is enjoying tremendous successes.

TORY NYHAUG GRABS SEVENTH PLACE AT BMX TIME TRIAL IN NORWAY

(Randaberg, NOR – April 13, 2012) Canada’s BMX superstar Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam, BC finished in seventh place in the Super Time Trial Finals on Friday, at the second UCI BMX Supercross of 2012, in Norway.

Nyhaug, who finished fourth in the opening time trials of 2012 in Chula Vista, posted a time of 32.647 seconds on the brand new track in scenic Randaberg.

“I wanted to podium but I’m still happy to finish seventh. I’m looking forward to racing tomorrow… it’s going to be fun,” commented Tory Nyhaug from Norway.

In doing so, Nyhaug qualified for the supercross race, the only Canadian to do so. The top64 riders of the time trials qualify for the elimination rounds of the supercross.

American rider Connor Fields posted the fastest time in the finals. Fields will attempt to win his third straight Supercross victory tomorrow, after winning the last race last season, and the opening race this season in Chula Vista. Fields also won the time trials in Chula Vista.

FOUR CANADIAN BMX RIDERS IN NORWAY FOR SECOND SUPERCROSS EVENT OF 2012

(Randaberg, NOR – April 12, 2012) Canada’s BMX superstar Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam, BC is headlining a crew of four Canadian riders currently in Norway, attending the second UCI BMX SuperCross of 2012, another important event for Olympic qualifications.

Over 170 riders from 26 nations are registered for this three-day BMX-event in Norway’s Randaberg Arena. This will be the second stop of the UCI BMX Supercross of the 2012 season.

The Time Trials and qualifications will be held on Friday, while the Supercross exciting elimination rounds will be held on Saturday.

2012 UCI BMX CALENDAR YEAR CHANGES

The Canadian Cycling association would like to inform it’s members of changes made by the UCI to the 2011 – 2012 UCI BMX Calendar year. This changes made by the UCI will align the BMX calendar year accordingly with all other cycling sports.

From the UCI: “The UCI BMX International calendar 2011 – 2012, which started 1st August 2011 will be extended to 31st December 2012. Also the UCI ranking will continue until the final date of 31st December 2012.”

The effect of this calendar change will be minimal on the members of the CCA. The athletes most affected by this calendar change are those who are slated to move up a category July 31st 2012, now you will change categories after December 31st 2012.

TORY NYHAUG STARTS SEASON WITH BACK-TO-BACK TOP 5s IN SUNNY CALIFORNIA

(Chula Vista, CA, USA – March 31, 2012) Canadian BMX superstar Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam, BC started the season on the right foot this weekend, scoring back-to-back top 5 results in Chula Vista, California, at the opening UCI BMX Supercross contest of the 2012 season.

On Friday in qualifying, Nyhaug went on the post the fourth fastest time of 34.814 in the Super Time Trial Finals race, and qualified for the BMX Supercross showdowns.

On Saturday, Nyhaug then went through the single-elimination rounds all the way to the Supercross finals, where he crossed the finish line in fifth place. Nyhaug was involved in a crash early in the race, but managed to get back up and finish the race among the Top 5.

American rider Connor Fields won both the time Time Trial and the Supercross races.

CANADA’S BMX RIDERS TORY NYHAUG AND JIM BROWN TO COMPETE AT UCI CONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS WEEKEND

Canada in a tight race with Argentina to qualify a second spot for the 2012 Olympic Games

(Ottawa, ON – February 09, 2011) BMX riders Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam, BC and Jim Brown of Airdrie, Alta, will be competing for Canada at the 2012 UCI BMX Continental Championships this weekend in Oldsmar, Florida.

Canada is hoping to score big at this event, which could help secure a second spot for Canada at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, UK. Canada is currently ranked in ninth spot with 1409 points, and is only seven points behind the eighth spot in the World ranking, trailing Argentina. The Top 8 in the UCI World Rankings are allocated two spots at the Olympic Games.

The event, also dubbed the USA BMX Gator Nationals, starts on Friday with practices and ends on Sunday. The PRO-UCI (Class 3) races will be held on Saturday February 11, and starts at 11:30am ET. A UCI (Class 4) race is scheduled for Sunday, February 12.
