BMX CANADA CUP SERIES COMES BACK AFTER SUCCESSFUL INAUGURAL SEASON

Canada Cup series are top transitioning cycling events for the champions of tomorrow

(Ottawa, ON – July 9, 2013) The 2013 BMX Canada Cup Series is coming back in 2013 after a highly successful inaugural season in 2012, and will feature Canada’s best BMX riders on their quest for international glory.

The five-race tour will be hosted in the provinces of Québec, Alberta and British Columbia.

Two events are scheduled at Coteau-Du-Lac to kick start the season in July, followed by a single race St. Albert following the Canadian Championships. The series will end in Abbotsford, BC for a set of two races to crown the 2013 Canada Cup Champions in Elite and Junior categories.

In its inaugural season, Canada’s top BMX riders from across the country came together to make the series a success, including Olympian and World Cup medallist Tory Nyhaug. Ultimately, Connor McCormack was the top rider in the men’s race showing great consistency throughout the season, confirming his domestic supremacy in the men’s BMX series. In the women rankings, Amelia Walsh squeezed in at the top of the women’s ranking in the last race of the season to win the women’s title.

Connor McCormark, Champion of the inaugural series: “This year is going to be real exciting in the Canada Cup series. Everyone’s been working very hard and this year is geared toward building team Canada and gaining race experience. We are all excited to race at home in Canada and everyone is going to be working extra hard for that top position. This is all key for some fast and intense racing!”

Tory Nyhaug, the current Canadian Champion for both BMX and Time Trial, and who recently won his first UCI SuperCross podium, added: “I always love racing at home in Canada.  The Canada Cup series is a great series for all Canadian BMXers to race and develop themselves.”

Two of the five races on the 2013 calendar are sanctioned as UCI C1 races.

The Canada Cup series is designed to provide competitive opportunities to the next generation of cyclists, transitioning from provincial race series to international competitions.

Hosted in partnership between Cycling Canada, its provincial sport organizations and local organizing committee, the Canada Cup Cycling Series is sanctioned by the International Cycling Union.
