CYCLO-CROSS COMES TO WHISTLER SEPTEMBER 20-21

Unique Style of Racing to take over Dirt and Cobblestones for Two Days of Racing in Whistler Creekside

WHISTLER, BC September 5, 2014 – Part mountain bike race, part cross-country grind, part criterium – cyclo-cross is in a category all it’s own, and this unique style of two-wheeled racing is coming to Whistler. Competitors, from beginner to elite, will descend upon Whistler Creekside September 20-21 for two days of speed, strength, endurance and celebration of this fast-growing discipline for Whistler CycloCross 2014.

Cyclo-cross consists of laps of a short course of varying terrain, including pavement, wooded trails, grass, hills and obstacles. Competitors ride narrow-tyred bikes, resembling modified road bikes, and are required at many points to quickly dismount and carry their bikes while navigating obstructions. The duration of races ranges from 30-60 minutes depending on the category. Cyclo-cross has a long history as off-season training for road racers, and a growing appeal within the mountain biking community.

The Whistler course will begin and end in Whistler’s Creekside Medals Plaza, integrating the cobblestone pathways of Franz’ Trail shopping area as well as the lower hillside at the base of Creekside, the original home of ski-lift access to Whistler Mountain. In total, $2000 in prize money will be awarded.

The weekend’s festivities will also include a Mountain Cross event on Saturday as well as celebrations and libations at Dusty’s Bar & BBQ late into Saturday evening before the cyclo-cross action starts up again Sunday morning.

Riders who want to test their narrow-tyred mettle and get gritty at CycloCross Whistler 2014 are invited to sign up for this inaugural event that’s sure to become a Whistler classic. Pre-registration and event information are available at the link below. Onsite registration will also be available. Riders are eligible to race Beginner and Intermediate categories with a Cycling BC citizen license, while Elite (A) riders must hold a UCI race license. One day licenses will also be available for $5 for youth and $10 for adults.
