CANADIAN PARA-CYCLISTS TRAVEL TO ITALY FOR OPENING ROAD WORLD CUP

Canadian cyclists continue preparations for 2014 Worlds and Rio 2016 Paralympic Games

(Ottawa, ON – May 6, 2014) Canadian para-cyclists will aim for podium performances this weekend as they compete in the opening round of the 2014 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cup circuit in Castiglione Della Pescaia, Italy.

Shelley Gautier of Toronto will race to defend her 2013 World Cup title in the T1 category. Jaye Milley of Calgary is showing great form early in the season, having won two bronze medals at the 2014 UCI Para-Cycling Track World Championships earlier in April, in the C1 category. Milley also capped off the 2013 road season with two bronze medals at the 2013 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships in Baie-Comeau.

Canada will have two more double medallists from these 2013 Road Worlds, with Marie-Êve Croteau of Québec City (T2) and Marie-Claude Molnar of St-Hubert (C4) winning silver medals in both the road and time trial races of their respective categories.

The competition begins May 9 with the time trials for all categories, and ends May 10-11 with the road races and team relay.

Canada’s main objective of this opening World Cup is to compete for podium performances, as well as continue its ongoing preparations for the 2014 Para-Cycling Road World Championships to be held Aug. 30 to Sept. 1 in Greenville, South Carolina, USA.
