DAY 8 HIGHLIGHTS: 2023 UCI CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Canada added five medals and another World Championship title to its count at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, GBR, on Aug. 10.

Mountain Bike Cross Country
Junior riders earned a complete set of medals in Mountain Bike Cross-Country Olympic (XCO), with Isabella Holmgren of Orillia, ON, becoming Junior Women World Champion, Marin Lowe (Junior Women) of Squamish, BC, clinching silver and Ian Ackert (Junior Men) of Severn, ON, racing his way to bronze.

“I thought it was going to be slippery because it rained right before the start,” said Lowe. “There were some slick parts in the course but I think my favorite part was crossing the finish and just running to Bella and we just embraced in this awesome hug that I’ll remember forever. It’s so cool to be on the podium with your friend.”

Elite athletes were also in action in Cross-Country Short Track (XCC). Léandre Bouchard (Alma, QC) was Canada’s top contender with a 15^th place in the Elite Men’s race, while Jenn Jackson (Barrie, ON) scored the best result amongst the Elite Women with 21^st.

Para-Road
Following a silver medal in the Women C4 Para-Cycling Track Individual Pursuit, Keely Shaw of Midale, SK, secured the bronze medal in the C4 Road Individual Time Trial 1:28.74m behind winner Samantha Bosco (USA) and her time of 40:57.70m.

Mike Sametz of Calgary, AB, clinched his first medal of the World Championships with a bronze in the Men C3 Individual Time Trial. He was followed by Alexandre Hayward of Quispamsis, NB, in sixth place. Other notable results from Canada were Mel Pemble of Victoria, BC, (Women C3) in eighth place and Carla Shibley with pilot Meghan Brown (Women B), both of Calgary, AB, in 10^th.

BMX Freestyle Flatland
BMX freestyle flatland competition concluded with the Elite Men Finals, where Jean William Prévost of Montréal, QC, scored his best result of the week with 85.50 points, which earned him fourth position, less than four points away from the bronze medal.

Road
Canadians were also in action in the Individual Time Trial, with Nora Linton (Junior Women) of London, ON, and Olivia Baril (Elite Women) of Rouyn-Noranda, QC, scoring Canada’s best result of the day, with a 14^th and 19^th place, respectively.
