OTTAWA, Oct. 30, 2016. – A capacity crowd came out for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Celebration & Fundraising Gala on Friday evening, at the Lord Elgin Hotel in Ottawa. John Tolkamp, President of Cycling Canada, said “The Olympic/Paralympic celebration is a fantastic and unique opportunity to bring all the athletes and coaches together and honour the accomplishments of a team which no doubt inspired the nation over this past summer Rio Olympics. We also wish to thank the Ottawa Cycling community in supporting this event and making the evening a fitting tribute to a team of talented athletes and coaches.”

The Silent Auction featured spirited bidding for autographed jerseys, Olympic prints, paintings and donated items, with over $10,000 raised. The funds raised will be shared between Cycling Canada national team programs and the National Capital Region Cycling Bursary program.

In addition to honouring the Olympians and Paralympians, special recognition was given to Cycling Canada CEO and Secretary General Greg Mathieu, who will be retiring at the end of this year, after four decades of service to Canadian sport. Under Greg’s leadership at Cycling Canada, cycling has grown to become one of Canada’s top medal-producing sports.

HAMILTON ROAD FOUNDATION – ROSS CHAFE AWARD 2016

The Hamilton 2003 Road Cycling Foundation is pleased to announce the inaugural winners of the Ross Chafe Award.  Ross Chafe was a long serving member of the Hamilton Road Foundation Board and instrumental in obtaining positive investment returns for the Foundation’s funds.  It was his philosophy that the Foundation should utilize its resources to the full extent possible to support the developing riders.  He died tragically in a cycling accident in 2015.

On the women’s side Ruby West (Dundas, ON) who was third in the Time Trial and seventh in the Road Race at the 2016 Canadian Junior Road Championships was selected for the award.  She is coached by Kevin Simms at the Centurion Next Wave club.  “I am honoured to be the first female recipient of this award.  This means so much to me because it provides me with great encouragement and validation that I am on the right path with my cycling career.  The award will go a long way towards travel expenses to international camps and races,” said Ruby.

Jordann Jones (Jerseyville, ON) was the male winner of the award.  He was the winner of the Time Trial and placed second in the Road Race at the 2016 Canadian Junior Road Championships.  He rides for the Team NCCH p/b DEC Express club and is coached by Rick Lee.  Jordann was thrilled to be the recipient of the men’s award; “I am honoured to have won the Ross Chafe Award.  Ross competed on the Canadian National Men’s team at multiple Road World Championships, the Commonwealth Games and Pan Am Games.  I hope I can do as well as he did.  This award will go towards helping me achieve my goals in cycling and my post-secondary studies.”

Jordann Jones 2003 and 2016 lo-res

The Chair of the Hamilton 2003 Road Cycling Foundation, Linda Jackson, had this to say about the inaugural awards; “We are thrilled to have two recipients of the calibre of Ruby and Jordann as our first two award winners.  There were many strong applicants and these two stood out not only due to their cycling performances but as importantly, their academic achievements and focus.  Providing this award to these worthy riders is a fitting memory to our dear friend Ross.”

CYCLING CANADA AND LOUIS GARNEAU LAUNCH 2016 CYCLING TEAM COLLECTION

(Ottawa, ON – April 08, 2016) At the upcoming Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Canadian cycling team uniforms from Louis Garneau Sports will blend cutting-edge technology with a nod to tradition.

This year, Team Canada will continue to sport the traditional light blue jersey with white sleeves and red maple leaves that dates back to the 1960s. This is the same iconic design as the one worn by Hall of Famers Alison Sydor, Jocelyn Lovell, Curt Harnett, Steve Bauer and Gord Singleton. Louis Garneau wore the kit himself in the 1984 Olympic Games and has been the producer of the Canadian National Cycling team kits ever since. The national symbol, the maple leaf, is visible on the rider from every angle, creating a strong visual impact.

The simple design disguises the forward-thinking technology associated with Garneau apparel, encompassing fabric construction, performance features, and moisture management. The 2016 edition will be the fastest and most comfortable Team Canada kit ever made thanks to extensive development work between apparel manufacturer Louis Garneau Sports and the aerodynamic expertise of Alphamantis Technologies. Directly involved at each stage of this collaboration were athletes and staff from Cycling Canada’s high performance programs. Canadian National Team athletes also underwent numerous fit sessions with Garneau to maximize aerodynamic efficiency.

“I could not be more proud of the tremendous development work that has been done with Cycling Canada,” said Founder and President Louis Garneau. “For months we have collaborated relentlessly in order to create the best-performing apparel for our cyclists at the Rio Games. We’ve put all of our expertise at the service of the team, and the result speaks for itself: state-of-the-art apparel that will allow our athletes to compete at the highest level and concentrate on their performance, not on the reliability of their equipment.”

“Cycling Canada is committed to providing our athletes with the best possible tools required to perform at the highest international level,” said Cycling Canada High Performance Director Jacques Landry. “We are proud to work with partners like Garneau who share this commitment and we are grateful for all the research, development and passion that has gone into delivering a world-class product to our world-class athletes.”

For the first time, authorized exact replica versions of the Team Canada jersey will be available for sale at select retailers that carry the Garneau product line at the end of May. A portion of the proceeds of each sale goes back to support the Canadian Olympic Team as well as Cycling Canada’s National Team programs.

CYCLING CANADA BOARD APPOINTMENT

(Ottawa, ON – March 01, 2016) The Board of Directors of Cycling Canada is pleased to confirm the appointment of Lyne Bessette to the Board as a Director-At-Large.

The Board position was vacated by Peter Lawless who was re-elected in September of 2015 but had to subsequently resign due to his position on the Board of another sport organization.  Ms. Bessette will serve out the remainder of the term to September of 2017.

Lyne Bessette is well known to the Canadian cycling community for her exploits as a top road (1995 – 2006) and cyclo-cross competitor (2001-2008).  She secured many podium finishes at the World Cup level in road and cyclo-cross events.  Nationally, Lyne was Canadian Champion multiple times in road and cyclo-cross and even won a pursuit national title on the track.  She was a member of the Canadian Olympic team in 2000 and 2004 and won the Tour de l’Aude Feminine in 1999 and 2001 and the Women’s Challenge in 2001.

In 2010 she returned to competition as the pilot for para-cyclist Robbi Weldon. The pair went on to win the 2010 Para-cycling Road World Championship, the Road Time Trial World Championships in 2011 and a gold medal in the road race at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.

Cycling Canada President John Tolkamp welcomed Lyne’s joining the Board.  “In Lyne we have added a person who understands the system, is an outspoken advocate for clean sport and a well-respected organizer of participation events in Québec.  She is a valuable addition to the Board of Cycling Canada.”

“I’m pleased to be part of the Board of Directors of Cycling Canada. My experiences and knowledge gained during my time racing will hopefully be valuable to those competing now and in the future.  I also realize that the most successful and valuable athletes are the ones who are true community members. Being the fastest or best isn’t the only thing that matters,” said Bessette.
