CANADA SENDS 13 MOUNTAIN BIKERS TO NEXT TWO WORLD CUPS

Canada to race World Cup races inNove Mesto na Morav, CZE and Albstadt, GER.

(Ottawa, ON – May 20, 2014) Canada is sending a team of 13 athletes to compete in the third and fourth UCI World Cup races of the 2014 season, to be held over the next two weekends in Nove Mesto na Morave, CZE and Albstadt, GER.

Canada’s delegation is comprised of Elite, U23 and Junior riders and includes all of the Canadian medallists from the 2014 UCI Continental Championships; where the team earned four medals.

“We’re bringing a young team with a lot of talent and depth to these events. It’s a good opportunity to assess our preparation and make refinements for the World Cup stops in North America,” said Dan Proulx, Head Coach of the Canadian Mountain Bike Team. “This competition is also important for Canada as it marks the beginning of the Rio 2016 Olympic Qualification process for our Elite riders.

In addition to the National Team, many other Canadian athletes will be competing in these races with their professional teams. Emily Batty of Brooklyn, ON (Trek Factory Racing), who earned a second place finish in the most recent UCI World Cup in Cairns, Australia will again aim for the top of the podium. Fellow Canadian Catharine Pendrel of Kamloops, BC (Luna Pro Team) will also be competing. She is returning to the World Cup series after breaking her collarbone in training earlier this season.

Peter Disera of Barrie, ON, the silver medallist from 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships junior race, will be racing with the national team and will compete in the U23 category for the first time.

CYCLING CANADA CONSULTATION INTO DOPING

Cycling Canada (CC) and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) have agreed to work jointly on an initiative to consult with members of the Canadian cycling community. The consultation will consist of a series of interviews designed to gather information regarding the prevalence, actual or perceived, of past and present doping activity inside the sport. Critically, the source of the information being sought will remain fully anonymous and thus protected from any possible sanction or retribution. All information will be gathered by a fully independent third party who shall be unconnected and unaffiliated with both the CCES and CC.

Goal:

The primary goal of the consultation is to engage various members of the cycling community in a discussion around their experiences, personal knowledge and perceptions with respect to the issue of doping in the sport of cycling in Canada.  The information gained from such discussions will permit: (i) a better understanding of the extent to which performance enhancing drugs may have been or still are a part of, or are perceived to be part of, the culture of cycling in Canada, (ii) a better understanding of how athletes make the decision to use performance enhancing substances and how they get introduced to them, (iii) the design of more effective education and prevention strategies which will be implemented into the Race Clean program, and (iv) more targeted testing and more focused investigations to root out any doping activity that may continue to exist in the sport.

Approach:

To enable members of the cycling community to disclose their experiences, personal knowledge and perceptions without a fear of sanctions pursuant to the Canadian Anti-Doping Program, interviews will be conducted with athletes and support personnel by phone or in person by a fully independent third party.

The individuals actually interviewed will be unknown to CC and CCES

Interviewer:

An independent company with significant expertise and experience in the Canadian sport community, LBB Strategies has been hired by CC to select the interview subjects and to conduct the interviews. LBB Strategies has been given clear and concise Terms of Reference to govern all aspects of the consultation process.

Interviews will be done voluntarily; however, not all individuals who express an interest in being interviewed will be contacted by the interviewer. Those who wish to share their experiences and information with the interviewer can contact Joannie Charbonneau at joannie@lbbstrategies.com or Benoit Girardin at benoit@lbbstrategies.com or 450 979-2230. The consultation process will examine the time period from January 1, 1998 to the present.

Interviews will take place between early May and early July 2014 with a final report being provided to Cycling Canada and the CCES in July.  The report will be made public.

In addition to the Cycling Canada project described above, the UCI’s Cycling Independent Review Commission (CIRC) is also underway.

The work of the CIRC on behalf of the UCI differs substantially from the anonymous nature of the Cycling Canada / CCES consultation.  The CIRC has the power to impose sanctions on any license holder who admits to an Anti-Doping Rule Violation and it may also propose reduced sanctions to any license holder who provides valuable information concerning doping activity by others.

The CIRC has been established by the UCI to conduct a worldwide independent investigation into the causes of the pattern of doping that developed within cycling and allegations which implicate the UCI and other governing bodies and officials over ineffective investigation and enforcement of such doping practices.

Cycling Canada urges Canadian license holders and support personnel that are contacted by the CIRC, to cooperate to the fullest extent in this important UCI work.

A NEW BEGINNING FOR THE GRAND PRIX CYCLISTE DE SAGUENAY

Internationally sanctioned, the Grand Prix Cycliste Saguenay should attract top teams

(Ottawa, ON – May 13, 2014) Cycling Canada congratulates the city of Saguenay, its partners and the organizing committee for its commitment to the development of cycling with the presentation of the first edition of the Grand Prix Cycliste de Saguenay.

After six successful editions of the prestigious U23 Nations Cup, the event will be replaced by the Grand Prix Cycliste de Saguenay. During the last six years, the world’s best espoirs (U23) cyclists passed through the roads of Saguenay while taking part in the Nations Cup.

It is therefore a major change of direction for this important race, which will allow a greater number of Quebec and Canadian athletes to participate in the event while attracting riders and teams with the prestigious UCI 2.2 international sanctions.

The new sanction represents an exceptional opportunity for teams to come to Canada and take part in two of the most prestigious events is the Grand Prix Cycliste de Saguenay and the Tour de Beauce. In addition to being beneficial for teams, this collaboration with the Corporation of the Tour de Beauce should allow the two organizations to share certain expenses and ensure the viability of the event.

In addition to having a significant impact on the development of Canadian athletes, this major event plays a vital role in Canada Cycling in the development of coaches and officials. It also represents a great opportunity for international visibility for the tourist region of Saguenay -Lac -St- Jean.

Cycling Canada is pleased to support the organization of this major event thanking all associated partners.

MARIE-CLAUDE MOLNAR AND JAYE MILLEY GRAB WORLD CUP BRONZE MEDALS

Canada ends opening World Cup event of 2014 with eight medals

(Castiglione Della Pescaia, ITA – May 11, 2014) Jaye Milley of Calgary, AB and Marie-Claude Molnar of St-Hubert, QC both finished third of their respective road race at the Para-cycling Road World Cup in Castiglione Della Pescaia, Italy.

Jaye Milley was among a group of five riders in the final sprint for the first place, after 1:41 of intense racing. Milley, along with three German and a Spanish rider, broke away from the main group and managed to cross the line together. Ultimately after 65-km of racing, Milley crossed the finish line in third place, behind Pierre Senska and Michael Teuber, two German riders.

“Today’s race was absolutely phenomenal! There was some incredible racing and all the guys at the line pushed the limit to the max. It was grueling, fast and utterly leg destroying. To say the least everyone brought there A-game and to be able to stand on the podium with the very best Para-Cyclists in the world for the second time this year is truly a blessing,” said Milley. “While this event was a tremendous success there was also a lot that I personally learned and will be coming home with lots to work on in preparation for the rest of the year so that I can push the limits even farther to bring home a medal for Canada at the 2014 Road World Championships.

Marie-Claude Molnar, who won a medal at the last Paralympic Games in London, was among the group of six riders in her race. Despite fighting sickness in April, hindering her training for this event, Molnar stayed composed and rode to the third place of the 65-km race, winning her second medal of the event after taking silver in the time trial on Friday.

“Considering the new groupings, the race was much more difficult and strategic. In my instance, the race went really well for me, despite a few mistakes of my part. As soon as I get back home, I will immediately go to work to gain the physical requirements needed to stay among the best. The competition is getting better and stronger, and I will have to race more frequently to gain experience in pelotons,” said Molnar.

Canada ended this World Cup event in seventh place of the Nations Ranking, with eight medals – four gold, one silver and three bronze.

CROTEAU AND GAUTIER STRIKE AGAIN, GOLDEN IN WORLD CUP ROAD RACE

Canada’s medal tally is at six for this opening World Cup of 2014

(Castiglione Della Pescaia, ITA – May 10, 2014) Shelley Gautier of Toronto, ON, and Marie-Ève Croteau of Québec City, QC, continued their road domination and remained undefeated at the 2014 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cup, both striking back-to-back gold medals in Castiglione Della Pescaia, Italy.

Today, the first set of road races were featured at this opening World Cup event of the season, and the Canadian tricycle power duo struck again, showcasing their talent and abilities.

Shelley Gautier managed to win the 24.6-km race with a time of just under one hour of racing. She lapped her closest competitor on her way to the gold medal. Gautier has proven to be an international threat in each of the World Cup or World Championships race, and is a true contender for another World Championships title this season.

Marie-Eve Croteau, who is pursuing her comeback after a severe crash that occurred in 2012, showed today that the intense rehabilitation work that was put in the comeback process was well worth it. She dominated the women’s T2 road race, completing the 24.6 km race with a time of 49:33, more than five minutes before her closest chaser, and almost eight minutes before the third place finisher. Similarly to Gautier, Croteau is on the right track for the World Championships.

“Once more today, right from the start, I was feeling really good, and my right leg was ready. I can go and confidently say that I had full control over my race – for the first time in my life,” said Croteau. “Mission accomplished here in Italy. I come back home with two victory, the World Cup leader’s jersey and a bigger smile.”

In the men’s H4 race, Mark Ledo of Maple, ON was involved in an exciting eight-man sprint for the second position. Ledo crossed the line third of the sprint, and finished the 73-km race in fourth position, just off the podium.

“Today has been a very good day for Canada. The majority of athletes reached their goal to earn UCI points. The performances were stellar today, with two podiums and one top 4. The only shadow in today’s races was the crash of Charles Moreau, who was forced to abandon. We hope to repeat this success in tomorrow’s C and B road races,” said Sebastien Travers, coach of the Canadian para-cycling team.

In addition to the four medals won yesterday, Canada’s medal tally is now at six, including four gold medals.

The events ends on Sunday with the second set of road races and mixed team relay.

FOUR CANADIAN PARA-CYCLISTS ON THE PODIUM IN OPENING WORLD CUP TIME TRIAL RACE

Croteau and Gautier dominate opening World Cup time trial

(Castiglione Della Pescaia, ITA – May 9, 2014) Canadian para-cyclists Shelley Gautier of Toronto and Marie-Ève Croteau of Québec City opened the 2014 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cup on an excellent note, riding towards the top of the podium in Castiglione Della Pescaia, Italy.

In total, four Canadian athletes stepped on the podium at the end of the day, with Marie-Claude Molnar winning silver and Nicole Clermont taking the third place and bronze medal.

Croteau, two-time silver medallist from the 2013 Worlds and previous World Champion, is continuing her return to full performance readiness after a crash that occurred prior to the Paralympic Games in 2012. She rode her first time trial race of the 2014 World Cup tour to a time of 28:05.95, showing a 1:22 lead on her closest competitor.

“This was by far the best time trial of my life; certainly the best managed one. I was feeling really good before the start. My right leg is performing really well, producing lots of power and velocity that ensure my pedalling is good,” said Marie-Ève Croteau, after the race. “I am still in catch-up mode, but this result means I am finding back my ways and performance from before my crash prior to the London 2012 Paralympic Games. I still have lots of work to accomplish, but it certainly bodes well.”

In the women’s T1 race, Gautier continued her World Cup success in this opening race of 2014. The 2013 World Cup Champion stopped the clock at 35:09.18 to take the win. Gautier dominated the race, finishing the race with an astonishing seven-minute gap over the silver medallist.

“I have trained hard and mentally prepared for this race. I am learning how to ride faster for longer periods of time,” said Gautier after the race. “I am proud to be riding faster than last year. Thanks to my coaches and the members of my team who helped me prepare for this World Cup race.”

Marie-Claude Molnar of St-Hubert posted the second fastest time among the women C4 category. Molnar crossed the finishing line with a time of 23:51.59, showing a 1:21 deficit over winner Shawn Morelli of the United States of America. The result is an encouraging sign for Molnar who has battled illness in most of April which hindered her preparations.

In the women C5 time trial, Nicole Clermont of St-Denis-de-Brompton finished in third place, crossing the finish line with a time deficit of 1:31 over the winner, Poland’s Anna Harkowska. The strong result for Clermont is her second career podium and her career best time trial performance.

Robert Labbé of Québec raced to the fastest time of the H1 category, but a decision was taken to reclassify Labbé to the H2 category. The reclassification led to his result being transferred to the H2 standings, the ninth place of his new category.

The competition continues Saturday and Sunday with the road races and team relay for all categories.
