LINK MY RIDE BECOMES OFFICIAL CYCLING APP FOR CYCLING CANADA

4 October 2022, London, UK – Link My Ride, the pre-ride organisational platform which allows cyclists to explore, plan and create group rides, has launched an official partnership with Cycling Canada as the governing body’s Official Cycling App. Link My Ride is free for cyclists to use and has a subscription platform tailored for clubs. Having launched just this month, the simple and easy to use smartphone app allows riders to connect and cycle with others.

Link My Ride also features a tailored Club Portal which facilitates the management of members and club rides whilst removing the administrative burden of running a club.

Jacques Sauvagnargues and Tom Pidcock, former teammates and professional riders, were at the heart of the business to create an app for cyclists, by cyclists. The two developed the idea as a way to increase cycling participation globally and to simplify the way that group rides are organised.

“Our partnership with Cycling Canada will help us to quickly continue populating the app with riders globally, adding to the user experience as the more cyclists there are using Link My Ride, the better the experience is for all,” explained Link My Ride co-founder Jacques Sauvagnargues. “Following our official launch this month we’re excited to be extending our reach globally and working with Cycling Canada to provide a new and exciting way to meet and interact with other cyclists across the country.”

“Community is at the center of Cycling Canada’s strategic plan, and we are confident that our partnership with Link My Ride will help us to grow and diversify our community while supporting the amazing work done by our clubs and provincial partners,” explained Mathieu Boucher, Chief Development Officer at Cycling Canada. “This partnership aligns with our efforts to support and service members beyond the racing community. Along with our provincial partners, one of our goals is to promote cycling to the broader cycling community by offering enhanced member benefits, opportunities, and supports.”

The Link My Ride app works by highlighting other riders on the local map and showing rides and clubs nearby or in the defined area. When using the app you can follow other cyclists to see their activity and rides, discover and join local clubs, see activity in your area via an interactive map, engage with others and also upload your own routes to create group rides. Additionally, the smartphone app provides a number of security features including privacy controls and location masking. Amongst many unique features, it also provides the user with a calendar to keep a log of all upcoming planned rides.

Currently, only the English language version of the app is supported. French language capabilities will be available by the end of October.

As part of this partnership, affiliated Canadian cycling clubs will receive access to an exclusive discount code for their first year of subscription. Please contact linkmyride@cyclingcanada.ca for more details on how to access this opportunity.

The Link My Ride App can be downloaded from the Apple Store here or from Google Play on Android. Find out more about Link My Ride here.

CANADIAN CYCLING TEAM NAMED FOR 2022 COMMONWEALTH GAMES

OTTAWA – (2022 – 06 – 28) – Commonwealth Sport Canada (CSC) and Cycling Canada today announced the 18 athletes who will represent Team Canada in both road and track cycling at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, including five past Olympic and Commonwealth Games medallists. Athletes to compete in Birmingham, England, from July 28 to August 8, 2022, were selected based on past performances and results at international road and track events.

“Our team showcases both the progress our athletes have made on the world stage and the passing of the torch to a new generation of Canadian cyclists,” said Cycling Canada’s High Performance Director Kris Westwood. “Four years ago, at the Gold Coast Games, Lauriane Genest was a surprise newcomer who finished fourth in the sprint tournament; Kelsey Mitchell wasn’t even part of our team. Now they are both Olympic medalists and riders to watch. At the same time, we have a wave of young athletes stepping up in track endurance and road and it’s going to be exciting to see how they do.”

The 2022 Commonwealth Games will present some challenges for the cycling team based on the large footprint, but Team Canada is confident in the calibre of this team to deliver when it counts.

“With the track cycling events in London and the road events in Birmingham, our cycling team is presented with some logistical challenges,” says Scott Stevenson, Executive Director, Team Canada 2022. “With the benefit of some late quota additions from Birmingham 2022, we will be strongly represented on both the track and in the Birmingham road events. We anticipate numerous medals from this group.”

Cycling competitions will kick off on the track, where a total of 15 gold medals will be up for grabs. Canada’s highly competitive sprint team will be fighting for a spot on the podium, with Olympic Sprint Champion Kelsey Mitchell leading the charge alongside Olympic Keirin bronze medalist, Lauriane Genest and World Cup medalist Sarah Orban. The men’s team will be comprised of Tokyo Olympian Nick Wammes, as well as Ryan Dodyk and Tyler Rorke, with all three competing at their first Commonwealth Games.

On the endurance side, both the women’s and men’s squads will be tackling the Individual Pursuit, Scratch Race, Points Race and Team Pursuit. The team will be led by Olympians and 2018 Commonwealth Games medalists Michael Foley, Derek Gee and Ariane Bonhomme, who will be joined by 2019 Pan American Games medalist Maggie Coles-Lyster, 2022 U23 Time Trial National Champion Ngaire Barraclough, Devaney Collier, Mathias Guillemette and Riley Pickrell.

The road competitions will follow immediately after, where Olympians Alison Jackson and Leah Kirchmann will be strong contenders in both the Time Trial and Road Race. They will be working alongside U23 and Elite Road Champions Simone Boilard and Maggie Coles-Lyster, as well as dual athletes Ariane Bonhomme and Ngaire Barraclough in the 112-kilometer race. The men’s team will boast Canadian Road Champion Pier-André Côté, Giro d’Italia Giovani medalist Riley Pickrell, Canadian Time Trial Champion Derek Gee, Michael Foley and Mathias Guillemette.

“I am very excited about my nomination to Team Canada for the Commonwealth Games. It is always an honour to wear the maple leaf on my jersey!” said Kirchmann. “The technical and rolling Time Trial suits my strengths as a rider, so I hope to target a top result in the event. I think we also have a strong team with a lot of cards to play in the Road Race, so I will be looking to help Canada target a medal performance in the event.”

The track competitions will take place at the Lee Valley Velo Park, from July 29 to August 1 with eight events including Team Sprint, Sprint, Keirin, Time Trial, Individual Pursuit, Points Race, Scratch Race and the Team Pursuit.

The road competitions will take place in Wolverhampton and Warwick, on August 4th and August 7th with the Road Race and Individual Time Trial.

Birmingham 2022 will feature 19 sports and eight para-sports as part of its program with up to 4,500 athletes taking part. The Commonwealth Games are the only multi-sport event that feature equal standing for sport and para-sport events, and these 2022 Games will showcase the largest para-sport program ever. In addition, for the first time in its history, the Games will feature more medal events for women (135) than men (133).

CYCLING CANADA AND GRUPPO ANNOUNCE THEIR PARTNERSHIP

Ottawa, ON (May 26, 2022) – Gruppo Nutrition – formerly Infinit Nutrition Canada – and Cycling Canada – one of Canada’s oldest National Sport Organizations – have announced a 12-month strategic and sponsorship agreement to provide premium cycling-specific sports nutrition to Cycling Canada and its national membership via the association’s provincial and territorial partners across the country. Over the past 15 years the Gruppo Nutrition team has fueled cyclists at the highest level of the sport; the new partnership offers an opportunity to reach a broader array of athletes as the newly re-branded company recommits to Canada’s cycling community while expanding their global footprint.

“This year will be a ‘breaking away’ moment for Gruppo,” said Gruppo Nutrition President and CEO, Darcy Haggith. “In the past, much of our work has been concentrated on research projects and working with elite, competition-level athletes. We’re now in a position to make that same knowledge set, pro-grade nutrition, and their benefits accessible to the cycling community at large. Cycling Canada – with their focus on inclusion across all competitive disciplines and recreational cycling – is the perfect partner at this moment for our company.”

The partnership will allow Cycling Canada members the opportunity to engage Gruppo for personalized nutrition guidance, attend virtual Gruppo-sponsored nutrition classes, and purchase core Gruppo nutrition products at member-only pricing. Additionally, Gruppo will be on site at many Cycling Canada camps and events throughout the year in an effort to connect with athletes and community members on a one-on-one level.

“We couldn’t be more excited about this partnership,” said Matthew Jeffries, CEO of Cycling Canada. “Darcy and the Gruppo team have truly earned their place as a trusted resource for so many of our national athletes through their work with the Canadian Sport Institute. With Gruppo as an ‘Official Nutrition Supplier’ we know we’ll be providing yet another benefit to our community that can directly influence their performance and enjoyment of this sport.”

Both organizations will celebrate the new partnership with outreach to their respective audiences via social channels, newsletters, and in-person at the Canadian XCO Mountain Bike Championships in Oro Station, ON and Canadian Cyclo-Cross Championships in Langford, BC

MY FIRST BICYCLE FOUNDATION AND B.I.CYCLE PARTNER WITH CYCLING CANADA’S HOPON PROGRAM

Ottawa, ON (May 25, 2022) – Cycling Canada is thrilled to be partnering with the My First Bicycle Foundation and B.I.CYCLE through its HopOn national grassroots program to provide Canadians of all backgrounds with access to cycling. These new community partners will support the delivery of the HopOn program and reduce barriers to entry for children across the country, making the sport more accessible to young Canadians.

The My First Bicycle Foundation, which helps financially disadvantaged kids obtain their first bicycle, helmet and lock, will be providing bicycles to those who qualify through the My First Bicycle online application process. This year, the Foundation is planning on giving away 700 bikes to children from coast-to-coast.

“My First Bicycle is very excited to partner with Cycling Canada and its HopOn program”, said Todd McCallum, Director of My First Bicycle. “This is a natural fit as the national grassroots program is aiming to make cycling more accessible to all kids across Canada. Together we have an incredible opportunity to get more kids on bikes and that’s our ultimate goal.”

Cycling Canada will also aim to provide greater opportunities for historically disadvantaged Black and Indigenous individuals and communities through its work with B.I.CYCLE by assisting with fundraising initiatives, providing financial support for instructors and offering sponsored activities at no cost to eligible Black and Indigenous organizations and communities.

Modeled after Cycling BC’s existing iRide program, the HopOn national grassroots program provides access to cycling at the community level, as well as through in-school programming. Through a games-based cycling education, the program teaches school-aged kids across Canada the joy of cycling safely. For more information about the program, visit http://hoponcanada.ca/.

CYCLING CANADA TO HOST ADVANCEMENT CAMPS ACROSS THE COUNTRY

Ottawa, ON (May 24, 2022) – Cycling Canada is pleased to announce that it will be hosting 13 Advancement Camps across Canada from June to November 2022. The camps will cater to athletes competing in Mountain Bike, Downhill, Track, Road, Para-cycling, Cyclo-cross and BMX and will target mainly U17 and U19 provincial and club-level riders, talent transfers and other athletes with the desire to reach the National Team in the short to medium term.

On top of skill development workshops and discussions, Advancement Camps will incorporate a short presentation and Wheel Side Chat with a Gracious Champion about their own experience with success, failure and resilience.

“Advancement Camps will be a great way to raise athletes’ awareness through standards and expectations of what is possible for their next level of development,” said Tanya Dubnicoff, Advancement Camp Coach at Cycling Canada. “Together, National Team coaches, provincial coaches and club coaches can help foster an environment of next-level education where athletes are exposed to tools and skills outside their normal environment. Our goal is ultimately to introduce the values, skills, behaviours and tools needed to integrate the National Team in the near future.”

CYCLING CANADA STATEMENT ON THE RUSSIAN INVASION OF UKRAINE

Ottawa, ON (March 2, 2022) – Cycling Canada joins the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in strongly condemning the aggression of the Russian and Belarusian governments and their non-respect of the Olympic truce.

We count ourselves among the UCI members who appealed to the UCI for strong measures and were pleased to see the organization’s statement yesterday confirming the sanctions that will be imposed with immediate effect. Cycling Canada would also like to extend its support to the Ukrainian Cycling Federation and all those impacted by the tragedy unfolding in Ukraine.

In line with the current UCI sanctions, Cycling Canada will prohibit participation from Russian and Belarusian national teams (as defined by the UCI) at all UCI international competitions on home soil, including the upcoming UCI Track Nations Cup, scheduled from May 12-15 in Milton, Ontario. Additional measures may be adopted as we continue to monitor the situation.
