EMILY BATTY ON THE PODIUM AT MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP

Canadian team shows consistent progression on International scene

(Val di Sole, ITA – June 15, 2013) Canadian mountain biker Emily Batty of Team Trek factory Racing stood on the third step of the podium after the 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Val di Sole, Italy.

The rider from Brooklin, ON who represented Canada at the 2012 Olympic Games in London last summer rode the course in 1:37:27, and finished less than one minute behind the winning time.

Canadian Mountain Bike Head Coach Dan Proulx was enthusiastic about the day of racing in Italy: “Emily’s ride was very strong and well-paced. She has shown consistency at the front of the field this World Cup season. Emily, and her coach Adam Morka, have done a great job. Emily’s third place today was a great way to end the first block of World Cups this season.”

Canada’s Catharine Pendrel, of Team Luna Pro, also had a good race, taking the sixth position.

Mikaela Kofman of Toronto, ON riding with Canadian-based SCOTT-3RoxRacing finished in 26th position. Kofman improves by nine places her rank from the last World Cup. The breakthrough result for Kofman represents her career best European results to date, showing consistent improvement. Andréanne Pichette finished 50th.

In the U23 races, the two-time Canadian Junior Champion Frédérique Trudel rode her career first U23 World Cup race, and fared well, taking the 13th position.

Antoine Caron posted the best Canadian result of the day of the U23 race, taking the 15th position. Evan Guthrie followed closely Caron, in 23rd place.

This result by Caron is Canada’s best U23 World Cup result in Europe since 2008. Hailing from the crop of first year junior riders brought to Europe in 2009, the U23 program is showing constant evolution, and can now rival with the world’s best.

Added Proulx: “This proves that the Canadian program is achieving success. Our results this weekend, in every category, show that we are rapidly progressing. We have great athletes and coaches all working together to realize this success.”

Rachel Pageau, in the junior women race, finished inside the Top 10, in tenth place.

CATHARINE PENDREL BACK ON THE WORLD CUP PODIUM, TAKING THIRD PLACE

World Cup in Nove Mesto showcases strong Canadian results with Plaxton fifth and Kabush seventh

(Nove Mesto na Morave, CZE – May 26, 2013) Canadian Mountain Bike Catharine Pendrel of Kamloops, BC, racing with Team Luna Pro, was back on the podium today at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Tour, taking the third place on the second race of the 2013 season in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic.

Pendrel crossed the finish line after 24.2 km of racing with a time of 1:27:11 for the third place. Slovenia’s Tanja Zakelj took her career first victory at the World Cup level, while Maja Wloszczowska of Poland crossed the finish line in second place.

“Today was a lot of fun,” commented Pendrel to Canadian Cyclist.  “It was definitely a lot better than last week, a return to the aggressive rider I am.  The racing was top notch with all these strong girls.  I felt good and then Tanja made an attack, and she had some pretty amazing speed.  I was feeling the earlier effort and had to regroup and get back into my rhythm.”

Emily Batty of Brooklin, ON, racing with Trek Factory Racing, made the Top 10 for the second consecutive week, taking the ninth spot in today’s race.

With the third place, Pendrel jumps to the sixth spot on the UCI World Cup overall standings, followed by Batty in seventh place.

Racing with Canadian-based professional team SCOTT-3RoxRacing, Amanda Sin of Collinwood, ON finished 32nd.

In the men’s race, Canada’s Max Plaxton of Victoria, BC, racing for Sho-Ari Cannondale, had a great result, taking the fifth spot – his best performance of the season. Plaxton, the two-time reigning Canadian Champion, cross the line with a time of 1:41:35.

“It was hard on the last two laps,” said Plaxton to Canadian Cyclist.  “With my start I was number 37.  I was lucky to not have any problems at the start and I paced myself for the first half of the race.  With two laps to go I could see the Czech rider [Ondrej Cink] in front of me, so I motivated to chase harder. My first top five in Europe, so I’m really pleased.”

Geoff Kabush of Courtenay, BC racing for SCOTT-3RoxRacing, also had a great run on this second week of World Cup action, taking the seventh place by completing the race just 10 seconds past Plaxton.

Derek Zandstra, also of SCOTT-3RoxRacing, bounced back this week, placing 31st.

The next event on the 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup June 8 in Fort William, Great Britain, with the presentation of the first downhill race of the calendar.

BATTY SIXTH TO OPEN 2013 UCI MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP TOUR

Reigning World Cup Champion Catharine Pendrel takes 12th

(Albstad, GER – May 19, 2013) Canadian Mountain Biker Emily Batty of Brooklin, ON, racing for team Trek Factory, was the top Canadian at the opening cross-country race of the 2013 season on Sunday in Abstadt, Germany, finishing sixth.

Batty, who is racing in her second season in the Elite category, crossed the finish line with a time 1:35:31, showing a time deficit of 1:35 over Eva Lechner of Italy, who won this opening World Cup race.

“The conditions were really tough out there today. It was hard on the athletes and their equipment. Emily was really strong today. Despite needing a wheel change in the middle of the race. She was very close to making the podium. It’s great to see that her early season form is good, said Dan Proulx, Head Coach of the Canadian Mountain Bike Team. “This was the first real test for the athletes in 2013. Emily will work with her coach, Adam Morka, to identify strengths and weaknesses from this race. It was a good chance to see where things are at.”

2012 UCI World Cup Champion Catharine Pendrel of Kamloops, BC, racing for Team Luna Pro, finished 12th. Mikaela Kofman of Toronto, ON and Amanda Sin of Collingwood, ON, both racing for the Canadian-based professional mountain bike team SCOTT-3RoxRacing came in 35th and 44th respectively.

Geoff Kabush of Courtenay, BC racing for team SCOTT-3RoxRacing opened his season by taking the 15th position of the race.

Added Proulx: “Max has already returned to the form he had prior to his knee injury last season. He was really strong today. He kept advancing through the field on every climb. He made some smart tactical decisions out there. Max had a very strong winter of training back in Victoria and it’s nice to see him get confirmation that all the hard work and consistency has paid off.”

On Saturday were held the U23 races. Hailey Smith was the top Canadian performer with a 16th place. Cayley Brooks took the 20th rank, while Andreane Lanthier Nadeau finished in 24th position.

RAPHAEL GAGNÉ TAKES FOURTH SPOT AT OPENING WORLD CUP RACE OF 2013

Gagné starts the season on a high note, making his way to the Big Finals

(Albstad, GER – May 17, 2013) Canadian Mountain Biker Raphaël Gagné took the fourth spot of the Eliminator race at the opening event of the 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Tour presented by Shimano, in Albstad, Germany.

“I’m glad I qualified. I didn’t what to expect. Making it to the final is super positive, even though I’m a little disappointed with how it turned out at the end of the final,” said Gagné after his final race.

“In some ways I was used to the format because I used to compete in swimming where there is a heats and finals format. I think that experience came in handy today. Part of the success was team support and I share that success with everyone. I’d like to thank my sponsors Rocky Mountain, Oakley and Cascades for their support. I’m looking forward to the World Cup XC on Sunday and the Czech World Cup next week.”

“Raphael had a superb race today. He easily controlled each round of the Eliminator, doing only what it took to move onto the next round. We were pretty certain that Raphael was capable of the win. Unfortunately all of the riders were pushing the limits of control. In the final turn, Raphael was taken out by another rider,” said Dan Proulx, Head Coach of the Canadian Mountain Bike Team.

“Mountain Biking is becoming faster, more tactical and more spectacular. We felt that it was important for the entire team to take on this challenge. Our riders learned a lot today. This is one of the best ways to gain experience quickly. It will pay off in the future for our team.”

This fourth place marks the top Canadian performance in an Eliminator race at the World Cup level. The Eliminator race in its second season as a World Cup event.

Austrian Daniel Federspiel won the race of this first race of the season, while Thomas Litscher of Switzerland and Miha Halzer of Slovenia took second and third place respectively.

In the women’s race, Andréane Lanthier-Nadeau was the top Canadian, finishing in 12th position.

“I was really impressed with the field of racers I was up against. After I qualified into the heats, I just had to forget that I was competing against the Elite Women, said Lanthier-Nadeau, in her second year as a U23 rider. “In the Quarter-Final, after a really good start, I clipped out mid-way down the first straight-away. I still tried to get back into the Top 2 but there was a lot of aggressive riding and contact so I ended up third in this round. I finished 12th overall at the end of the day. I’m really happy that we did the Eliminator as a team. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s race and hope to stay clipped in!”

The cross country races are held tomorrow for the U23 categories and Sunday for the Elite categories.
