HARD FOUGHT MEDAL FOR HALEY SMITH AT MOUNTAIN BIKE PAN-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

(Cota, COL – March 29, 2015) The partnership between Cycling Canada and Bear Mountain Resort is already paying dividends as mountain biker Haley Smith secured a bronze medal at the 2015 UCI Pan-American Championships in Cota, Columbia on Sunday.

Despite a slow start and a crash, Smith relentlessly made her way back through the field to cross the line in third place.

“It went fairly well today; I had a slow start with a few technical mistakes on the first lap but was able to rally to get myself into a medal position. The course was very challenging with lots of steep climbs and I just put my head down and grinded it out to finish in third. Thanks to Cycling Canada for the awesome support this week. And thanks to Norco bicycles for the 27.5 set up, which was perfect for this style of course.

Dan Proulx, head coach of the national mountain bike team, was excited about this race for Smith. “Haley did an incredible job, racing under pressure at altitude. The medal was definitely hard fought. There were many tough battles within the race. She has been working hard to improve her technical skills and preparation for altitude competitions. This is a huge step up from her last altitude race at the Méribel World Cup in 2014.”

To prepare for this event, the team gathered at Bear Mountain Resort, the national training centre for mountain bike, and the results are following suite. Added Smith: “We had a two-week national team training camp at Bear Mountain where we got to train on some of the toughest trails in the world. It was the perfect environment to hone our technical skill and practice steep ascending. I followed this up with two weeks at altitude with the national team, which was perfect preparation for racing at 2500m above sea level.

“Haley has been an integral part of the Cycling Canada national training centre at Bear Mountain Resort in Victoria. It’s great to see her investment rewarded. Even though this is early season form, the benefits of the daily training environment at Bear Mountain are already apparent. After this competition we’ll resume training in Victoria in preparation for the regular season – beginning at the end of May with the first two World Cups in Europe,” concluded Proulx.

The cross-country portion of the 2015 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Tour begins in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic, on May 23.

BEAR MOUNTAIN RESORT COMMUNITY TO HELP CANADA’S MOUNTAIN BIKER ACHIEVE WORLD-CLASS PERFORMANCES

Canada’s National Mountain Bikers find home in Victoria, BC

January 21, 2015 (Victoria, BC) – ECOASIS and Cycling Canada are proud to announce their partnership that will designate Bear Mountain as the Official High Performance Training Centre of the Canadian National Mountain Bike Team.

The Partnership will run from 2015 to 2020 and is perfectly aligned with Cycling Canada’s vision to become a leading cycling nation by 2020 and beyond.

With the recently opened Mattamy National Cycling Centre in Milton, ON and now the Ecoasis Mountain Bike National Cycling Centre opened at Bear Mountain in Victoria, BC, Canada is in a stronger position to achieve its long-term objectives to put Canadian athletes on the podium at Olympic Games and World Championships.

Throughout the partnership, the Canadian National Mountain Bike Team will participate in various Major Games, including Olympic Games [Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020], Pan American Games [Toronto 2015, Lima 2019] and Commonwealth Games [Gold Coast 2018].

Southern Vancouver Island has attracted the country’s top mountain bike athletes as a home and year-round training ground since the inception of the sport in the 1990’s, including Canada’s first Mountain Bike Olympian (Athens – 1996), and Victoria native, Andreas Hestler: “Southern Vancouver Island has all the ingredients to turn out world-class athletes and has been doing so for many years. It is amazing to see facilities developed to support athletes and of equal importance to engage the local community in encouraging a healthy lifestyle. I am excited to see the long term legacy that this forward thinking can deliver – this is a win-win for everyone!”

Other notable athletes who have lived and trained in Victoria include Roland Green (World Champion 2001, 2002), Alison Sydor (World Champion 1994, 1995, 1996) and Catherine Pendrel (World Champion 2011, 2014) among others.

Two-time XC MTB World Champion Catherine Pendrel is excited about the opportunity to train in Canada. “Canada has been a dominant nation in cross-country mountain biking since World Cup racing began in the early 90’s.  Riders naturally gravitated to the year round temperate climate and amazing trail and road riding network in Victoria. Having a training centre in Victoria will be an incredible resource to develop our national team riders and to continue producing the best riders in the world.  I am really excited by this partnership between Bear Mountain and Cycling Canada MTB and look forward to spending more time on the island.”

Canadian Mountain Bike Head Coach and Victoria resident Dan Proulx sees great opportunities for the National Mountain Bike Team going forward with the new Training Centre at Bear Mountain: “Bear Mountain will provide the National Team with a great opportunity to build a year-round high-performance centre that supports Canada’s future champions.” Proulx added “the weather, technical terrain and daily training environment in this region will help our riders fully prepare for international competition. The National Mountain Bike team has a strong history here. Many of the best Canadian mountain bikers have perfected their skills and fitness on these trails.”

ECOASIS President and CEO, Dan Matthews: “Bear Mountain Resort is very pleased to support and welcome Canada’s mountain bike athletes, many of whom have deep roots in the trails around our beautiful resort community. Acting as a catalyst for world-class sport development is a priority for us at Bear Mountain, and we are excited and proud to be an important anchor for Cycling Canada’s mountain biking program. Along with the development of the trails necessary for the Canadian team athletes, we are working with our local partner organizations to introduce trail systems for mountain bikers of all skill levels to enjoy. Mountain biking is a strong complement to our commitment to golf and tennis and its versatility fits in well with the expansive healthy lifestyle opportunities and amenities that will further distinguish our community.”

The CEO of Cycling Canada, Greg Mathieu is appreciative of the support being provided to the national program and noted: “Thanks to ECOASIS, our riders will get to experience the challenging trails on southern Vancouver Island and considerable support available at Bear Mountain Resort. This partnership will enhance our national program and provide for a daily training environment that is essential to the development of Canada’s top mountain bikers.”

The first of the Canadian National Mountain Bike Team’s Spring Training Camps with take place at Bear Mountain this February 23- March 8. There will be opportunities to meet the athletes and coaches at Westin Bear Mountain on the final weekend of the Camp. Further details will be announced.

CATHARINE PENDREL WINS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS TITLE

Pendrel wins second career World Title

(Hafjell, NOR – September 6, 2014) Canada’s Catharine Pendrel of Kamloops, BC won the elite women World Championships title on Saturday, in Hafjell, Norway, her career second title.

Pendrel finished the race with a time of 1:30:30, crossing the finish line 21 seconds ahead of former World Champion Irina Kalentieva of Russia and 43 seconds ahead of American Lea Davidson. The feat is exceptional, as she flatted in the last lap with a 43-second lead. Thanks to a quick wheel change, she was able to maintain her lead position and went on to win.

Pendrel won the same title in 2011, in Champéry, Switzerland. Pendrel stood on the Top 3-podium three times this season on the World Cup tour, including one victory in Windham (USA) and a second place on home soil in Mont-Sainte-Anne. Pendrel also won the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland in a dominating fashion.

“I like to race from the front,” confirmed Pendrel to Canadian Cyclist, “and when there’s an opportunity to take the lead you should go for it.  That’s always the kind of racer I have been.  If you want to win the Worlds you have got to be willing to take some chances and go out strong.  When I came through the finish line after the first lap and saw that I was 20 seconds faster than my Team Relay lap, I was pretty happy, and I felt that I could maintain it.”

“I knew Irina was coming behind me, and I knew that she had won here the year before [at the World Cup], so I had to stay on the gas.  Then, with half a lap to go, I got a front puncture and I was lucky to have amazing technical support, and the fastest wheel change ever, and get back on the bike to win the world championship.”

“Catharine was phenomenal today. She was so strong and composed. It was one of her best race ever,” said Dan Proulx, Head Coach of the Canadian Mountain Bike team.

Emily Batty of Brooklyn, ON finished sixth. “Emily was on form and well prepared for these Worlds. She had an incredibly strong race. Canada is fortunate to have two female athletes at such a high caliber’” added Proulx, of Batty’s performance.

In the elite women’s race, Canada finished as the top-ranked country in the nations g.rankin

Derek Zandstra of Trenton, ON posted his career best result at World Championships. The 2013 Canadian cross-country champion finished in fifteenth place of the very strong elite men field. Had he not flatted, the outcome for Zandstra could have been breathtaking.

“It’s my best world championships by, I think, eight spots, so I’m pretty happy,” said Zandstra.  “The start wasn’t the best for me, we got pretty tangled up in the first singletrack and I think I was sitting around 50th, but I kept going steady and passed when I could, and never let up,” commented Zandstra.

Dan Proulx was excited for Zandstra: “Derek was on track for an eighth place when he flatted. Despite the flat tire, this was still his best performance at World Championships. Now, he has the confidence and knows he’s a Top10 rider.”

About the Canadian performances, Proulx went on to add: “This year’s World Championships gave the entire team a lot of momentum and inspiration. We’ve got one of the strongest programs in the World, and each year it’s attracting more and more top-level athletes. Our job is simply to create an environment where Champions are inevitable. I think our progression this year shows we’re on track.”

Earlier in the week, the Canadian Team Relay finished in seventh place, while Léandre Bouchard of Alma, QC posted his career best result  with an eighth place to end his U23 career as he will be racing in the elite category next year. Bouchard’s last season was filled with success, finishing in the Top 5 of a World Cup cross-country race, as well as making the medal race in the Eliminator. Bouchard also won two titles at the 2014 Canadian Champion, in the cross-country (U23) and the eliminator.
