2014 MOUNTAIN BIKE CANADA CUP SERIES TO FEATURE INTENSE COMPETITON

Rugged and demanding off-road racing in Canada’s premier MTB series.

(Ottawa, ON – April 29, 2014) The 2014 Canada Cup – Canada’s premier Mountain Bike series – will see Canada’s best cross-country and downhill riders competing for the prestigious title of Canada Cup Champion.

The series has been the foundation of Canada’s mountain bike development system throughout its twenty-year history. Countless Olympic and World Championship team members have advanced through its ranks – competing on rugged and challenging courses throughout Canada. This year’s series consists of four cross-country and three downhill events.

In cross-country, Antoine Caron (Stoneham, QC/Specialized Racing) will look to defend his Canada Cup title from 2013. Caron came out on top after an intense battle with Evan Guthrie (Peachland, BC/Norco Factory Team) and Evan McNeely (Kingston, ON/Norco Factory Team) that was decided in the very last race of the season. Sandra Walter (Coquitlam, BC/Liv/giant Canada), who showed consistency and power in racing to a comfortable lead and capturing her first Canada Cup title last year, will once again be looking to finish the season on top of the standings.

In downhill, Kyle Sangers (Kingston, ON) was the 2013 series winner in the Elite Men’s category, while Miranda Miller (Garibaldi Highlands, BC) came out on top in the Elite Women’s field. Both riders will be looking to defend their Canada Cup series titles in 2014.

New in 2014 is the introduction of the UCI Junior Series- XCO. Canada will host two events as part of the international series, the junior races at the Canada Cup in Mont-Tremblant and Whistler.

“The Canada Cup showcases Canada’s top mountain bikers. Every race counts and is critical to the final standings. The riders really have to be on at every event if they hope to win. It’s a fun and exciting series for everyone. It definitely highlights Canada’s emerging talent and strength in the off-road disciplines.” said Nicholas Vipond, the series coordinator at Cycling Canada. “We have incredible organizing committees and sponsors who deliver world class events at each venue. Each organizer is professional and committed to creating a high quality experience for the riders. They continue to improve the series each year – refining and progressing the courses and ramping up the atmosphere so that everyone has an incredible time at these races.”

The series will start with a cross-country and downhill race at the very popular Mont-Tremblant event on May 17-18. The event in Mont-Tremblant is celebrating its 20th edition this season, and welcomes over 1000 cyclists of all ages to its races. American mountain biker Stephen Ettinger (BMC MTB Racing) was the 2013 winner of the Elite Men cross-country race. Sandra Walter opened the season with the victory in Mont-Tremblant last year.

The cross-country riders will then make their way to Baie-Saint-Paul, near Québec City, to compete at the second cross-country race of the season on May 24. Baie-Saint-Paul is also a classic event of the Canada Cup Calendar, having hosted races for the last 16 years. In 2013, Both Ettigner and Walter were the winners of the race, sweeping the Quebec leg of the Canada Cup series.

The downhillers will travel out west to Panorama, British Columbia for the second race of the downhill series on July 6. Panorama has hosted the Canadian Mountain Bike Downhill Championships many times and continues to attract the top riders in the country who look forward to intense racing in one of Canada’s most scenic venues.

The cross-country series will continue in Eastern Canada with another heart-pounding race on July 13 in Sudbury, ON –- the week before the 2014 Canadian MTB XCO Championships. The race is organized by Pulse Racing who has organized top-level mountain bike races since 1996. Derek Zandstra (Kingston, ON/Scott-3 Rox Racing) came out victorious in his first Canada Cup race of 2013 at the Sudbury event, while Sandra Walter secured the Elite Women’s category title with a third consecutive victory last year.

The Canada Cup series will come to a close for both cross-country and downhill racers at the Crankworx Whistler mountain bike festival in August. In 2013, Crankworx Whistler added both the downhill and cross-country Canada Cup Finals to its renowned event. The races drew big crowds and all the big names of the Canadian Mountain Bike scene made the trek to British Columbia.  2014 is expected to attract even more top riders – all attempting to lock in points for the overall series title and to come home with a win in front of the wildly supportive MTB fans in Whistler. Whistler will also be host of the UCI Junior Series for the cross-country junior race.

FOUR MEDALS FOR CANADA AT MOUNTAIN BIKE CONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Trudel, Kofman, Caron and Gagné all grab medals for Canada in early season championships

(Ottawa, ON – March 31, 2014) Canada competed  at the 2014 UCI Mountain Bike Pan-American Championships on the weekend, and fared well winning four medals, one in each of the categories with Canadian representation.

Raphael Gagné of Québec, QC rode to the bronze medal in the Men Elite race, crossing the finish line with a time of 1:45:12, just ahead of countrymen and reigning Canadian Champion Derek Zandstra of Trenton, ON, who took fourth place.

“I came here to defend my second place from last year, but my goal was for a Top 5. I gave all I had today, so I am pleased with third. I had logisitical problems in my travels, but thanks to the support from the national team program and the will do to well, I am very happy to have persevered and make it here to these Championships,” said Gagné, after his medal performance.

In the men’s espoirs (U23) race, Antoine Caron of Stoneham, QC stepped up to the challenge and finished third, grabbing the bronze medal after racing for 1:31:15. Caron was involved in a tight race for the silver medal, finishing just six seconds behind the silver medallist.

“The race went better than planed given my left scaphoid injury (wrist). The heat made the race very tough, but I was able to stay hydrated and my pacing strategy paid off at the end… On last lap, I was really close to the Brazilian rider to finish second, but he still had some legs in him,” said Caron.

In the Elite Women category, Mikaela Kofman of Toronto, ON was also riding with the hopes to medal at these championships after stepping on the podium last season. In hot conditions, she managed to ride to the silver medal, posting a time of 1:45:09.

“It was definitely a hard, hot and long race. I went off the start knowing that I had to race smart, hoping that some riders would fade. Mary [McConneloug, USA] went off and I thought she could hold the lead, but she faded. With two laps to go, I was feeling good and was able to distance Mary. Danielle [Campuzano, MEX] was strong today!”

Frédérique Trudel of Breakeyville, QC, the 2013 U23 Canadian Champion, was also a contender for a medal at this event, and did not disappoint. The young rider started with a fast pace, but couldn’t hang on and took the third place, winning the bronze medal. “This was a tough first race of the season for me. I started out strong and faded in the last two laps,” commented Trudel. “It was getting hot out there and I should have drank a little bit more. Overall, I’m happy with my result!”

The 2014 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup tour starts on April 10th with cross-country and downhill races in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The worldwide tour will make nine stops before the 2014 UCI World Championships in Hafjell, Norway, the final event of the year. Canada will host one event on the 2014 UCI World Cup Tour, hosted in Mont-Sainte-Anne, QC, from July 31 to August 3.

RAPHAEL GAGNÉ SEVENTH IN ELIMINATOR AT MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLDS

Smith off the podium for the first time of the 2013 campaign

(Pietermaritzburg, RSA, – September 1, 2013) Canadian Mountain Biker Raphael Gagné of Quebec,   QC finished in seventh place of the cross-country eliminator as the 2013 UCI Mountain Bike Championships ended in South Africa.

The eliminator is a one-lap race held on a short, action-pack course. After a qualifying lap to qualify and rank the riders, two of the four riders in each heat move on to the next round,

Gagné has had success in the discipline this season, taking the fourth place in the opening World Cup of the season. Gagné qualified for the elimination rounds with the 21st fastest lap time.

In his first two opening heats, Gagné moved on by crossing the fastest line in second place, qualifying for the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, Gagné finished fourth and was relegated to the small final, racing for the fifth place.

The reigning Canadian Champion of the eliminator, Léandre Bouchard, ended his day on the trails of South Africa in the quarter-finals, taking the 14th position in the final classification. Canadian riders Geoff Kabush and Max Plaxton also qualified for the finals, and did not advance from their first heat.

In the women’s eliminator race, Canada’s Andreanne Pichette posted the best Canadian result in 17th position. Laura Bietola, an Espoir rider, and Rachel Pageau, a junior rider, also took part in the women’s open eliminator race, taking the 21st and 24th position, acquiring valuable career experience.

SMITH SUFFERS MECHANICAL ISSUES IN DOWNHILL RACE

In the elite downhill races, Canada’s downhill star Steve Smith of Cassidy, BC came short today of repeating his victory from the last World Cup race in Mont-Sainte-Anne.

A day after posting the fastest qualifying time of the large field in yesterday’s timed session, Smith posted today the 63th fastest time, after he encountered some issues in the mid-section of the wild downhill course.

Smith posted the second best time at the first interval, and then disaster struck. The third split show a time deficit of over 30 seconds on the top split. Smith would maintain his speed towards the finish line to finish in a heartbreaking 63rd position.

Smith had previously won two medals at earlier World championships, a silver in 2011 and a bronze in 2012.

STEVE SMITH POSTS FASTEST TIME ON THE EVE OF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS FINALS

Batty, Kabush posts best Canadian results in the Elite cross country races

(Pietermaritzburg, RSA, – August 31, 2013) Canadian downhiller and two-time World Championships medallist Steve Smith posted the fastest time of the downhill timed session at the 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa on Saturday.

Smith is enjoying a dream season, finishing in the Top 4 of each races he entered, and posting three Top3 results, including a victory on Canadian soil at Mont-Sainte-Anne. Smith has previously won silver and bronze medals at Mountain Bike World Championships.

Casey Brown posted the best time in the women timed session, with the seventh fastest time of the group, with Micayla Gatto posted the eighth fastest time.

In the Elite Women cross country race, the reigning Canadian Champion Emily Batty posted the best Canadian results finishing in 17thplace, despite battling sickness, a chest infection. “I’m still battling illness and a chest infection,” explained Batty in a conversation with CanadianCyclist.com. “I had great legs but was really held back by my lungs. You would think I’d be used to racing sick by now, as it’s been a constant uphill battle all year long. I’m not happy with today, but I just made the most of it.”

“We definitely had a challenging day out there. Our Elite women’s team had a tough lead up to Worlds with some injuries and sickness that hampered preparation, so we weren’t quite sure how it would go. On the men’s side it was simply a tough day where big time gaps formed early and there was simply no way to come back,” said Dan Proulx, Head coach of the Canadian Mountain Bike Team.

“On the positive side, I know all of our riders maintained their composure and did the best they could with what they had on the day. We’ll take the lessons learned here and continue to build our program toward 2016. The important thing is to keep everyone moving forward. We definitely have lots of talent and fire-power in our team.”

The 2011 World Champion Catharine Pendrel was among the leading group in the first lap, and crashed, which forced her to lose her momentum, out of contention. She would end her race soon after Batty, in 20th position.

Mikaela Kofman posted an excellent result in 23rd position for her rookie appearance in the elite group at World Championships, while Amanda Sin crossed the finish line just after Kofman, in 24th place. Both Sin and teammate Sandra Walter were involved in a crash early in the race.

“In the Women’s race, Mikaela Kofman had a breakthrough, finishing 23rd. That’s a great ride from one of our youngest elite riders. We expect to see Mikaela get closer to the front as she gains more World Cup experience,” commented Proulx.

Geoff Kabush finished his race in 25th place of the elite men category, the best result among the Canadian group in South Africa. Kabush was involved in a crash at the start of the race, and couldn’t close the large gap that resulted in the race.

“It was a battle out there the whole day,” said Kabush to CanadianCyclist.com.  “A really high speed course, really physical.  I came into it feeling I had a chance, fought as hard as I could, but 25th … not exactly excited about it.  I had a near death experience at the start, when a guy laid himself out flat in front of me, and I had to ride over a couple of other bodies and bikes.  Slotted in around 20th, but the speed was high just wasn’t able to move up.”

Derek Zandstra, which has had a stellar season winning the Canadian championships race, finished 33rd, followed by Raphael Gagné. Max Plaxton suffrered from flat in the first lap, and finished 39th.

Proulx added: “At these Worlds we’re definitely seeing some depth and a higher level of performance in our Junior and U23 riders. It’s really encouraging to see the program continue to develop and improve. We’re confident that we have a strong team of young guns that will insure Canada’s future success at the international level for many years to come. In a post-Olympic year, you really want to focus on these riders and take the pressure off the Olympians from last year. It’s nice to see the younger riders take advantage of this opportunity.”

Tomorrow will feature the cross-country eliminator, as well as the downhill finals.
