LÉANDRE BOUCHARD STRIKES AGAIN AT MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP IN GERMANY

Bouchard races to fourth place in Eliminator

(Albstadt, GER – May 30, 2014) Less than a week after his fifth place in the cross-country race at the World Cup in Czech Republic, Canadian mountain biker Léandre Bouchard of Alma, QC punched again on Friday. This time, the young rider finished fourth of the Cross Country Eliminator at the World Cup in Albstadt, Germany, his career best result in the event.

Bouchard, the reigning Canadian Champion in the discipline, easily qualified for the elimination rounds finishing with the second fastest time of the qualifying round, and then went on to win the next three rounds to earn his berth into the big final, where he placed fourth.

“I’m really happy to make my first World Cup podium. My physical form is good right now. This is a good sign for the cross country race on Sunday. I’m happy to see I still have good legs from last weekend’s World Cup,” said Bouchard, ecstatic after the award ceremonies.

Canada’s mountain bike head coach Dan Proulx praised the efforts and Bouchard’s progression: “Today’s ride shows, once again, that Léandre is on the right track. He’s competitive in cross country and in the Eliminator at the World level. Léandre is the heart of our team. When he does well, it inspires all of us. Everyone is so happy for him!”

Bouchard will race the U23 cross-country race on Sunday prior to his return to Canada, where he will jump on a road bike to race the Grand Prix cycliste de Saguenay, in his hometown.

Canadians Peter Disera of Barrie, ON, Sebastien Cadieux-Duval of Prévost, QC and Andrew l’Espérance of Halifax, Nova Scotia all qualified for the elimination round, but did advance from the opening round.

The cross-country races will be held Saturday for the junior and U23 women categories, and Sunday for the elite and U23 men categories.

CANADA’S LEANDRE BOUCHARD FIFTH AT MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP

Canadian Catharine Pendrel takes second place in women’s race

(Nove Mesto na Morave, CZE – May 25, 2014) Canadian mountain biker Léandre Bouchard of Alma, QC rode to his career best performance on Sunday, finishing fifth of the men’s U23 cross-country race at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup event in Nove Mesto na Morave, CZE.

Bouchard completed the 24.3 km course with a time 1:18:25 of racing, crossing the finish line 2:20 after the race winner.

“I am very thrilled about the fifth place. I raced an impeccable race. The long and large start loop allowed me to position myself in the Top 10. Then, the legs kicked in and I was able to gain some positions, almost one per lap, said Bouchard. “That race had to be the best in my life. The fact that it is in Europe makes me even happier.”

Prior to the race, Bouchard knew the start would be key in the race. “We were 141 (of us) on the start line, and for me that was the largest number of riders I had to face in a race. I was starting from way back, but I knew I had the time to better position myself before the narrow stretch because the start loop is well done here in Czech Republic,” mentioned Bouchard to Sportcom.

Bouchard jostled for position in the start loop, and emerged sitting in eight place following the short lap. In the first full lap, he posted his fastest lap of the day, and gained one position. The second lap was consistent, remaining in seventh place.

Bouchard made his move in the third lap, gaining two positions to sit in fifth place. In the last three laps of the five-lap race, Bouchard stayed consistent and managed to maintain his fifth place while creating some separation between himself and the riders behind him.

In the women’s elite race, Canadian rider Catharine Pendrel, racing for Team Luna Pro, rode to the second position of her first World Cup race of the season. Pendrel returned to international racing this week after sustaining a broken collarbone.

Raphael Gagné posted his best European performance to date in the Men’s Elite category, taking the 23rd place as the top Canadian finisher.

The two junior races were held on Saturday. Marine Lewis finished 17th of the women’s race, while Marc-André Fortier finished 19th of the men’s race.

The Canadian Mountain Bike Team will now travel to Albstadt, Germany for the fourth event on the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup circuit.

CANADA SENDS 13 MOUNTAIN BIKERS TO NEXT TWO WORLD CUPS

Canada to race World Cup races inNove Mesto na Morav, CZE and Albstadt, GER.

(Ottawa, ON – May 20, 2014) Canada is sending a team of 13 athletes to compete in the third and fourth UCI World Cup races of the 2014 season, to be held over the next two weekends in Nove Mesto na Morave, CZE and Albstadt, GER.

Canada’s delegation is comprised of Elite, U23 and Junior riders and includes all of the Canadian medallists from the 2014 UCI Continental Championships; where the team earned four medals.

“We’re bringing a young team with a lot of talent and depth to these events. It’s a good opportunity to assess our preparation and make refinements for the World Cup stops in North America,” said Dan Proulx, Head Coach of the Canadian Mountain Bike Team. “This competition is also important for Canada as it marks the beginning of the Rio 2016 Olympic Qualification process for our Elite riders.

In addition to the National Team, many other Canadian athletes will be competing in these races with their professional teams. Emily Batty of Brooklyn, ON (Trek Factory Racing), who earned a second place finish in the most recent UCI World Cup in Cairns, Australia will again aim for the top of the podium. Fellow Canadian Catharine Pendrel of Kamloops, BC (Luna Pro Team) will also be competing. She is returning to the World Cup series after breaking her collarbone in training earlier this season.

Peter Disera of Barrie, ON, the silver medallist from 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships junior race, will be racing with the national team and will compete in the U23 category for the first time.
