BATTY & DISERA REPEAT AS NATIONAL XCO CHAMPIONS

Oro-Medonte, ON (July 21, 2019) – Over 700 athletes came out to the Canadian XCO Championships on Saturday at Hardwood Ski & Bike, 75 minutes north of Toronto. Two familiar faces stood on top of the podium in the Elite races, with Emily Batty (Trek Factory) winning her fourth consecutive women’s title, and Peter Disera (Norco Factory) winning his third consecutive Elite men’s title. In the Under-23 races, Laurie Arsenault (ACQ) and Quinton Disera (Norco Factory) won their first titles in the category.

Both riders won in similar fashion: riding with their top rivals for the first few laps before pulling away in the second half of the race, despite heat and humidity that pushed temperatures to the mid-30s.

“I think it just came down to turning on for an event that I wanted to do well in,” said Batty, who has struggled in the first half of the World Cup season. “I definitely had a slow start to the season and have been overcoming a bunch of obstacles, but I think it is starting to come around.”

“The hat trick is cool, and I’m super excited to race here at home,” said Disera, whose family lives within 15 minutes of the race site. “This is week five [in a row] of racing for me, so I’m pretty tired. All the media attention is cool and I’m happy to talk, but it kept the high a little too high and stacked on pressure for this weekend, so I was a little bit excited and a little bit nervous going into this race.”

XCO MTB NATIONALS HEAD TO HARDWOOD SKI & BIKE THIS WEEKEND

Oro-Medonte, ON (July 16, 2019) – The Canadian XCO Championships will return to Hardwood Ski & Bike, located in the township of Oro-Medonte, ON, on July 20-21. This venue played host to the 2015 Toronto Pan American Games, where Canadian athletes won two gold medals.

“We are thrilled to be back at Hardwood Ski & Bike for what is sure to be one of the most exciting XCO Championship races to-date,” said Josh Peacock, Events Manager at Cycling Canada. “With Canadian riders continuing to climb the ranks on the World Cup circuit, and across all levels of international competition, there is no doubt that the level of competition will be incredibly high as riders fight for the right to wear the maple leaf into the 2020 season. Alongside Championship racing, the event will also play host to challenge racing available to riders of all ages and abilities. The expo area will also be very alive, with multiple vendors on-site providing some great products for fans to check out between races.”

The Cross-country championships for men and women will take place on Saturday, July 20, for categories ranging from Cadet (Under-17) through Junior (Under-19), Under-23, Elite and Masters, with about 450 riders competing in all categories. On Sunday, July 21st, the Team Relay event will conclude the Championships.

The Elite women’s race will see current champion Emily Batty (Trek Factory) go for her fifth title, with a strong field of contenders also registered to race. Former world champion and Olympic bronze medalist Catharine Pendrel (Clif Pro Team) will be back after recovering from an injury last year, alongside World Cup & Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Haley Smith (Norco Factory). Sandra Walter (Liv Cycling), Maghalie Rochette (Specialized) and Jenn Jackson (AWI Racing P/B The Crank and Sprocket) will also be looking to get on the top step of the podium.

The men’s race will have a deep field of contenders, including top World Cup ranked Canadian and current champion Peter Disera (Norco Factory), Rio Olympians Leandre Bouchard (Pivot Cycles – OTE) and Raphael Gagne, as well as Andrew L’Esperance (Norco Factory). Sean Fincham (Norco Factory) might also be a contender for a spot on the podium, finishing 4th last year in the Elite field.

THREE CANADIANS ON THE PODIUM AT LES GETS MTB WORLD CUP

Les Gets (July 15, 2019) – Canadian riders had a strong weekend in Les Gets, France, at Round 4 of the Mountain Bike World Cup. Sean Fincham (Norco Factory) had his first World Cup podium, finishing third in Under-23 men, moving him to fourth in the overall standings. Haley Smith (Norco Factory) was sixth in Elite women, as was Peter Disera in Elite men, and they are now both tenth in the overall standings. In the Junior men’s Downhill competition, Canadians Patrick Laffey and Seth Sherlock, both riding in Team Canada colours finished second and third respectively, while Lucas Cruz (SRAM TLD Racing) was fifth.

“All in all, I cannot complain,” said Disera. “I had the ride of my life and my legs were great.  My head was quiet and focused – completely autonomous execution. The podium would be cool but I’m 24 and we are only halfway through the World Cups!”

HALEY SMITH WINS BRONZE AT NOVE MESTO WORLD CUP

Nove Mesto, Czech Republic (May 27, 2019) – Haley Smith (Norco Factory) took the first World Cup podium result of her career with a third place in the Elite women on Sunday at the second round of the Mountain Bike World Cup in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic.

Smith’s result moved her up to eighth in the overall standings from 13th. In the men’s race, Canadian champion Peter Disera (Norco Factory) struggled after finishing seventh on Friday in the short track event and could only manage 49th. Leandre Bouchard (Pivot-OTE) was the top Canadian man in 39th, after working his way back from a flat tire and gaining 90 positions.

“I’ve always liked this course,” said Smith, “It really feels like mountain biking, it’s got flow and is about being a bike rider, and that’s what I did; I just found the flow and I went for it. I think I was 15 seconds out [of top-5] heading out on the last lap, and [national coach] Dan [Proulx] yelled seven seconds, and I thought ‘I can do seven seconds’. I knew I just had to give it everything I had, because I would regret it if I didn’t.”

In other results, Canadian Under-23 men’s national champion Sean Fincham (Norco Factory Team) finished sixth on Saturday, moving him up from tenth to seventh in the overall standings. Canadian Junior riders had some bad luck in their races, with Emilly Johnston (Pendrel Racing) crashing while in the lead group of the women’s race and recovering for 13th place, while world number one ranked Carter Woods (Rocky Mountain Factory) hit a post while battling for first place and dropped back to finish tenth.

HALEY SMITH FINISHES 9TH AT ALBSTADT WORLD CUP

Albstadt, Germany (May 20, 2019) – Canadian mountain bikers Haley Smith (Norco Factory) and Peter Disera (Norco Factory) each had career best performances on Sunday at the opening round of the World Cup in Albstadt, Germany. Smith cracked the top ten, finishing ninth in a world-class field of women, while Disera took nineteenth in the elite men’s competition.

“I have so many demons at Albstadt,” said Smith. “I’ve DNF’d before, and I was 50th last year. My goal today was to just beat the course and ride for myself, and I’m really proud that I did that. I knew I just had to be patient and ride to my own pace, because Albstadt is a race of attrition. I stayed calm and just picked people off the whole race.”

“After the short track on Friday I landed myself a second row start, so before I knew it, I was top-10. It wasn’t a great physical performance, and I had to fight hard mentally to stay in it.  It was a tough day all around, and when the skies opened up it got real wild out there,” said Disera.

CARTER WOODS FINISHES SECOND AT UCI MTB JUNIOR SERIES

Albstadt, Germany (May 19, 2019) – Canadian riders finished in the top ten at all races on the opening day of competition at the Mountain Bike World Cup in Albstadt, Germany. Carter Woods (Rocky Mountain Factory) had the top result of the day, finishing second in the Junior men’s race, part of the international UCI Junior Series. Emilly Johnston (Pendrel Racing) was eighth in the Junior women’s field, while in the Under-23 men’s World Cup race, Sean Fincham (Norco Factory) was tenth.

“The three of us were riding together and I put in a few attacks because I didn’t want it to come down to a sprint,” explained Woods. “Right before the final corners, we were sprinting side by side, and I got pushed into the metal barricades. When we hopped back on our bikes, his handlebars were straight and mine were twisted, so that was it. It’s pretty cool [to have this series], it’s motivating. I felt good during the race, it was just a little bit of bad luck.”

“It was my first time starting at the front, on the second row, which was pretty exciting,” said Fincham. “I was able to sit in the top ten and hang out for most of the race. Attacks started to go with three laps to go, and I couldn’t quite hold on.”

WALLACE 8TH AT DH WORLD CUP OPENER

Maribor, Slovenia (April 29, 2019) – Canadian riders had a strong start to the Downhill World Cup season in Maribor, Slovenia, with Mark Wallace (Canyon Factory) qualifying first in Elite men and finishing eighth in the Final. In the Junior men, Ethan Shandro (Trek Factory Racing) was on the podium in second place at his first-ever World Cup, while Lucas Cruz (SRAM TLD Racing) was just off the podium in fourth. Rachel Pageau was the only Canadian woman competing, but did not qualify for the Final.

World champion Loic Bruni (Specialized) of France took the Elite men’s win, ahead of Danny Hart (Madison Saracen) and Troy Brosnan (Canyon Factory). Wallace sits sixth overall in the standings, due to his qualifying win. Finn Iles (Specialized) qualified third, but had problems on his run, finishing 52nd, and is 25th overall in the standings.

RAPHAEL GAGNE WINS PAN AM MTB TITLE

Aguascalientes, Mexico (April 7, 2019) – Canada’s Raphael Gagne won the Elite men’s title at the Continental Mountain Bike Championships on Saturday, in Aguascalientes, Mexico, after previously winning the silver medal in 2013 and bronze medal in 2014. Catharine Pendrel was the top Canadian in the Elite women’s race, finishing fourth.

Held at 2000 metres altitude, the Pan American championships offered important UCI ranking points towards Olympic qualifications, and all six Canadians competing finished in the top-10 in their respective races.

“Definitely over the moon with this win,” said Gagne. “I came second, nine seconds from winning, in 2013 and one minute from winning in 2014 with bronze. Today I finally got it. I’d like to thank the Canadian national team for supporting me here and at some of the key races this season when I need it the most. It’s a tough situation now with no team, and the Québec team is there to help me at some races too.  I am really happy I could make it happen for myself, but I am more thankful to those that are helping me right now.”

Leandre Bouchard finished seventh in Elite men, while Quinton Disera was sixth in the Under-23 men’s race.

The Elite women’s race was led from start to finish by world champion Kate Courtney (USA). Pendrel, the Olympic bronze medalist in 2016, was part of the four rider group that dropped the rest of the field and challenged for third in the final laps. Canadian champion Emily Batty finished sixth and Sandra Walter was ninth.

Jeff Ain, Canadian Team Manager, said, “The course is a tough one with the desert heat and altitude, but we came in with a well-laid out plan and everyone executed really well. Raph showed some exceptional tactical skills to pull off the win in the elite men, and Catharine was in a tight last lap battle for bronze.  Everyone was in the top-10 with some very deep fields.”

Ottawa, ON (April 5, 2019) – Canada is sending a strong team to the Pan American Mountain Bike Championships in Aguascalientes, Mexico, this weekend. The Championships are the Continental Championships for Cross-country, and carry valuable nation ranking points for Olympic spots at the 2020 Games.
