PARACYCLISTS RIDE TO CANADIAN TITLES IN TIME TRIALS

PARACYCLISTS RIDE TO CANADIAN TITLES IN TIME TRIALS AT THE CANADIAN ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Canada’s best regroup in Lac Megantic to race for highest Canadian honours

(Lac Mégantic, QC – June 27, 2013) The 2013 Canadian Road Championships saw an increase in participation among the strong group of Canadian paracyclists. The country’s best cyclists with a disability converged to Lac Mégantic, QC to race for the coveted Maple Leaf jersey awarded to the Canadian champion.

With Canada hosting the 2013 UCI World Cup Finals in Matane and World Championships in Baie-Comeau later this summer, everyone came ready to perform and show their potential and fitness progress.

In the fast tandem races, the experienced tandem of Daniel Chalifour and Alexandre Cloutier won the race by just 0.08% of the National standard over the second place of the newly formed team of Robbi Weldon and Emilie Roy. Alexandre Carrier and Aroussen Laflamme, who have raced the world cup together this season, took the third spot.

“The race was really tight, it was a just a matter of seconds between us and Weldon/Roy. We knew that they are good time triallists, and we had our work cut out for us. We didn’t do a proper warm up, so we used the first few minutes to properly warm up,” continued Chalifour.

The victory is even sweeter for the Chalifour/Cloutier team, with Cloutier celebrating the birth of a new baby just 10 days ago.

“It’s the annual trek to the Canadian Road Championships. It’s been eight years that we are attending, my seventh with Alexandre. The race went really well. We are very happy since Alexandre’s wife just gave birth. He’s got good form, but he’s very tired also. In addition, we broke our bike at the Defi Sportif, and we had to order a new frame, which just arrived a few days ago. He had to set –up the bike yesterday,” said Daniel Chalifour.

In the C category, Jaye Milley (Team Alberta) won the coveted Maple Leaf jersey by posting 103% of the National Team standard. 2012 Paralympic medallist Marie-Claude Molnar (Équipe du Québec) came in second with 102.3% of her standard, while Arnold Boldt (Team Saskatchewan) came third at 101.1%.

“I’ve been around for eight years, and I have been trying every single year to win that coveted jersey. Finally it is here. I can’t describe the feeling of winning. It’s absolutely exhilarating to win a Canadian Championships, said Milley, who is recovering from a crash at a race earlier this season. “With that jersey comes responsibilities. I’ll represent my country to the best I can as the Canadian Champion in the Time Trial at the World Championships, and I’ll bring it home hopefully.”

In the Handcycling races, Mark Beggs (Équipe du Québec) the race of the combined H. Charles Moreau (Équipe du québec) rode to the second place, while Robert Labbé (Équipe du Québec) posted the third best result.

Dominique Mainguy (Team Quebec) was the fastest of the tricycle race and took the jersey, finishing the combined race with a time of 20:30. The reigning World T1 Champion Shelley Gautier (Team Ontario) finished second at 21:25, while Louis-Albert Corriveau-Jolin (Team Québec) came in third.

The top para-cyclists will now enjoy a full day of recovery, and will compete for the road race titles on Saturday.

CANADA CONTINUES PARA-CYCLING EXCELLENCE IN SEGOVIA

Both Molnar and Gauthier show great form in their first World Cup races of the season

(Segovia, ESP – June 16, 2013) Marie-Claude Molnar of the Canadian Para-Cycling team posted another stellar performance, winning the road race in the C4 category at a World Cup in Spain, while Shelley Gautier also raced to the top of the podium in the tricycle races.

Marie-Claude Molnar, of Ste-Agathe, QC, crossed the finish line of the 60-kilometer road race with a time of 1:49:50, lapping her competitor in the fouth of five laps.

In the Tricycle race, Canadian Shelley Gautier also raced to the top of the podium. She had an excellent race, posting her career best average speed, and even posting better times than some of the T2 men.

“Even though our riders had no depth in the peloton, they maintained excellent rhythm, matching some higher categories. As yesterday’s races, these performances allow us to best prepare our athletes for the World Championships in Baie-Comeau,” said Sébastien Travers, coach of the Canadian Para-Cycling team. “Marie-Claude showed she is great form, racing and holding on to some C5 wheels. As per Shelley, well, she posted her career best average speed.”

On Friday during the time trials, both Molnar and Gautier also stood on the top step of the podium, making this a perfect weekend for the two cyclists.

The Canadian Team was forced to withdraw in the team relay as a result of the crash by Mark Ledo in yesterday’s road race.

CANADIAN WOMEN TANDEM RACES TO PODIUM PERFORMANCE IN SPAIN

Weldon/Roy again reach podium at Para-Cycling World Cup, for the third time this season

(Segovia, ESP – June 15, 2013) The Para-Cycling World Cup in Segovia, Spain continued on Saturday with the presentation of the first of two set of road races, and the Canadian women tandem once more climbed onto the podium.

The Canadian tandems fared well today, both the men and women riding with new guides acquired in the training season.

“We’ve had a good day today with our tandems. Both teams were involved in the races, with attacks and breakaways. Our women did everything to breakaway, but had to use their sprints in the final. On the men’s side, after a two-lap breakaway, two wheel changes and some mechanical issues, our guys were still in the mix at the end of the race,” said Sébastien Travers, coach of the Canadian Para-Cycling team. “We’ve met our objectives here to acquire race experiences for the tandems.”

In the men’s tandem race, the newly formed tandem of Alexandre Carrier and Aroussen Laflamme have adapted well to its new environment, racing in its first World Cup road race. The two have been an active part of the animated race, but unfortunately suffered from two flats tires. The tandem finished eighth, with just 49 seconds behind the winning time.

The women tandem raced to their second podium of the weekend, taking the second place today. Robbi Weldon and Emily Roy, two experienced cyclists, were also very active in their race. The tandem crossed the line in second place of the sprint at the finish line, just six seconds behind the Great Britain tandem.

In the Handcycling road races, Robert Labbé was the top Canadian, taking the seventh spot of the race. Unfortunately, both Mark Ledo and Mark Beggs did not finish the race. Ledo crashed in the first lap, while Beggs was forced to abandon due to medical issues.

Travers adds: “In the Handcyclie, Robert is coming back from a shoulder injury. His race in Segovia allowed us to see his progress against some of the best in the world, to best prepare him for the World Championships. As it concerns Mark Ledo, a crash is always disappointing, especially since he’s a very competitive athlete.”

Tomorrow in Segovia, the road races continue with the tricycle and cycle races. Both Marie-Claude Molnar and Shelley Gautier will be in action.

2013 CANADIAN CYCLING TEAMS JERSEY, DESIGNED BY LOUIS GARNEAU, UNVEILED

Cycling Canada’s longest partner designs and produces world-class cycling apparel

(Ottawa, ON – June 10, 2013) Once again Louis Garneau Sports has delivered a stunning design that will be used by Canada’s cycling teams competing around the world for Canada at UCI World Championships, World Cups, and other major events for the next four years.

The design incorporates the famous head-turning “Canada Blue” color worn by Canadian cyclists at the recent Olympic Games in London. The design also offers the striking Canadian maple leaf, symbol of Canada, on both the front and back of the jersey.

The cycling apparel is produced with world-class technical fabrics which have gone through rigorous wind tunnel testing to ensure Canadian cyclists are offered the best competitive clothing helping them perform on the world stage.

“Once again, our cyclist competing around the world will feel a sense of pride in wearing the maple leaf with world-class cycling apparel,” said Jacques Landry, High Performance Director and Head Coach at Cycling Canada. “Our relationship with Louis Garneau dates back to the 1984 Olympic Games, and will continue to flourish for another Olympic cycle as our cyclists race around the world in all cycling sports, proudly representing their country.”

“We have an unwavering trust in our Canadian cyclists. They have made us so proud leading up to the 2012 Olympic Games, at World Cup and World Championships events year after year,” added Louis Garneau, owner of Louis Garneau Sport. “We are proud to be a Canadian company, offering the highest quality cycling apparel to cycling markets across the globe. Our partnership with Cycling Canada has been extremely powerful and beneficial in the constant growth of Louis Garneau Sport.”

Throughout the partnership between Cycling Canada and Louis Garneau Sport, a replica edition of the 2013 Canadian Cycling Team cycling kit will be sold across the country at Louis Garneau dealers and online to cycling fans, with part of the proceed going through the development of new Canadian cycling heroes.

THE NEW WELDON/ROY TANDEM FORCED TO ABANDON AFTER EARLY CRASH

The new tandem crash within first three kilometres at Para-cycling World Cup

(Merano, ITA – June 09, 2013) The 2013 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cup continued on Sunday in Merano, Italy with the presentation of mass-start road races, and the new Canadian women tandem of Robbi Weldon (37, Thunder Bay, ON) and pilot Émilie Roy (26, Bromont, QC) were forced to abandon the race in the first three kilometres after crashing while animating the race.

The Weldon/Roy tandem was formed after the retirements of Geneviève Ouellette and pilot Lyne Bessette, and this new tandem is establishing itself as a strong player from the onset of their relationships.

Earlier on Friday, the team won its first World Cup race together as a tandem, the individual time trial of the World Cup in Merano.

The 2013 UCI Road Para-Cycling World Cup Tour continues next weekend as the top para-cyclists in the world, including a full Canadian Team, converges to Segovia, in Spain for the second stop. Canada is hosting this season the 2013 World Cup Finals as well as the 2013 Para-Cycling Road World Championships.

PARALYMPIC CHAMPION ROBBI WELDON FINDS WINNING WAYS WITH NEW PILOT EMILIE ROY

Emilie Roy, an experienced pilot, will ride with Robbi Weldon and continues Canada’s successful showing in women’s tandem

(Merano, ITA – June 07, 2013) The 2013 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cup started today, and the new Canadian women tandem comprised of Robbi Weldon (37, Thunder Bay, ON) and Emilie Roy (26, Bromont, QC) took no time to illustrate its potential, taking the victory of their first race together in Merano, Italy.

This past off-season, Cycling Canada opted to combine two of its strongest athletes in one tandem with the hopes to maintain the tradition of winning in the women’s tandem category, and this first day of racing proved it to be a very fruitful decision.

Robbi Weldon, a decorated Paralympian who won gold in the road race at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, is now teamed up with Emilie Roy, who piloted Geneviève Ouellette in the last Paralympic Games cycle.

Emilie Roy is no stranger to success as well, finishing fourth in the road race at the Paralympic Games with Geneviève Ouellette, involved in the final sprint for the bronze medal. The two of them won multiple medals at UCI World Cup and World Championships together.

The two are racing for the first time together at the World Cup level this weekend in Italy, as the new Paralympic cycle begins. As results of this first race demonstrated, this tandem could be a force to reckon with on the world stage, and could continue the tradition of winning set by the tandem of Weldon and Olympian Lyne Bessette, who retired after the Games.

In its first race as a tandem, the new duo rode an individual time trial race, and posted a time of 35:36.5 after 22.9 kilometers of racing. The Great Britain tandem of Lora Turnham and pilot Fiona Duncan came second, 8.54 seconds slower than the Canadians.

“This new tandem could be very strong, right from the beginning, as we saw it today. Although it is very hard to replace an experienced and proven rider such as Lyne Bessette, Emilie Roy possesses all the right qualities and race experiences to have an immediate impact. She has piloted tandems in the past, both on the road and on the track, and we are thrilled to see the new tandem join their skills in racing situations this weekend,” said Arnaud Litou, Para-cycling Program Supervisor at Cycling Canada.

Robbi Weldon has had a quick rise to stardom since transitioning to para-cycling, winning multiple World Cup and World Championships titles in her early cycling years.

“Robbi is a well-rounded athlete with exhaustive multi-sport experience. She has adapted very quickly to para-cycling after retiring from her illustrious cross country skiing career, and immediately became a contender at cycling races worldwide,” explained Litou.

The road race will be the next step for the tandem, on Sunday.

Only the tandem of Weldon and Roy from Canada are attending this opening World Cup event of the 2013 calendar, and the full Canadian Para-cycling team will regroup next weekend for the second World Cup event, in Spain.
