2013 PARA-CYCLING WORLD CUP FINALS END IN MATANE, CANADA GRABS NINE MEDALS

Canada wins four medals in time trial races and four medals in road races

(Matane, QC – August 25, 2013) The 2013 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cup season came to an end on Sunday with the last set of road races at the Finals in Matane, QC, and Canada concluded the weekend in sixth place of the nation rankings with a total of nine medals.

Canada won four medals in the first two days of competition with four medals in the time trial races, and continued its medal-winning ways in the road races, adding five more medals.

On Sunday, Canada added two medals to its tally with the men’s tandem of Daniel Chalifour (Mont-Laurier, QC) and pilot Alexandre Cloutier (Ste-Antoine-De-Tilly, QC) taking the silver medal after a breakaway that didn’t get brought back, and Nicole Clermont (Sherbrooke, QC) sprinting for the silver medal.

“It’s a little surprising, because that wasn’t the team strategy before the race started,” said Chalifour after the race to Sportcom. “We thought it would end in a sprint, and we wanted to help Alexandre and Aroussen for the finish, since Alexandre is from Matane.”

“We wanted to be part of the initial breakaway, but when we realized that we had a considerable lead, our coach told us to go for the podium. This proves that we are in the game, after our fourth place from Friday’s time trial where we finished just one second from the podium.”

Nicole Clermont took the silver medal in her second world cup race, after winning the bronze medal on Friday in the time trials. The women’s c5 race also ended in a sprint, with three riders coming together at the finish line. Clermont finished between two Americans in first and third places.

In the C1 road race, Jaye Milley (Calgary, AB) finished just off the podium in an exciting finish featuring a six-rider sprint after 1:43 of racing the 66.4 km course. Brayden McDougall (Calgary, AB) did not finish the race.

In the women’s c4 race, Marie-Claude Molnar (Ste-Adèle, QC) was unlucky in the finish of the race. Molnar fell with one kilometer to go in the race, and was well positioned for the final sprint. Molnar did not finish the race despite being a contender throughout the race.

Paralympic Hall of Famer Arnold Boldt (Saskatoon, SK) finished 11th of the men’s C2 race, just under a minute of the winning time, while development cyclist Sebastien Bouchard (Québec, QC) finished 13th of the men’s C4 race.

The Canadian relay team, composed of Charles Moreau (Trois-Rivières, QC), Mark Ledo (Maple, ON) and Robert Labbé (Québec, QC) took the sixth place. The young tandem of Melissa Boivert and Katy St-Laurent did not finish their road race.

Teams from around the world will be boarding a ferry boat on Monday, travelling to Baie-Comeau, QC for the 2013 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships, the last set para-cycling road races in 2013.
