CYCLING CANADA, LOUIS GARNEAU ANNOUNCE TEAM UNIFORM FOR 2015 PAN-AMERICAN GAMES

Canadian-based Louis Garneau and Cycling Canada unveil stunning design for its athletes

(Toronto, ON – July 08, 2015) Cycling Canada and Louis Garneau Sports are proud to unveil the approved design for the Team Canada uniform that will be worn by the Canadian cyclists competing at the 2015 Pan-American and Parapan American Games in Toronto this upcoming summer.

For the past 32 years, Louis Garneau apparel has played a key role in the performance, success, and professional appearance of the Canadian Cycling Teams at nine Olympic Games and countless World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Pan-American Games. Louis Garneau and Cycling Canada announced in 2013 a four-year deal that would see the Canadian-based cycling apparel manufacturer outfit the team through to the 2016 season.

The uniform, which for the first time was voted by the public via social media, will be white with the red maple leaf as the centrepiece of the uniform. A hint of the Cycling Canada trademark blue can be seen around the maple leaf. The shorts will be black, with the Canada wordmark on the each side.

“The Team Canada kit has always held a special meaning for me. It represents my own cycling career, of course, but also the beginning of my corporate life. Time Trial kicks off junior and master portion of 2015 Canadian Road Championships

(Thetford Mines, QC – July 2, 2015) The junior and master portion of the 2015 Global Relay Canadian Championships kicked off thursday in Thetford Mines, Quebec, with the presentation of the individual time trial races for all categories.

In the junior men race, Derek Gee of Osgoode, ON (Team Ontario) dethroned 2014 Champion Pierre-Andrée Côté of St-Henri de Lévis, QC, (Équipe du Quebec) to take the title and the coveted jersey, posting a very fast time of 40:48 in the 28.4 km course. Evan Burtnik of Edmonton, AB (Team Alberta) finished second just 19 seconds out of first place, while Côté took the third place more than 1:15 over the new Canadian Champion.

Gillian Ellsay of Courtenay, BC (Cycling BC) was in a class of her own atop the standings of the women’s race, posting a time of 23:27 on the 14.2 km course. Emeliah Harvie of Banff, AB (Team Alberta) took the second place, 44 seconds out of the first place, followed by Erin Attwell of Victoria, BC (Cycling BC).

The master racers will have their road race tomorrow, while the junior will compete in their road races Saturday.

SILBER PRO CYCLING SWEEPS TOP 5 OF CRIT AT CANADIAN ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Alison Jackson wins women’s criterium thanks to a great attack

(Saint-Georges, QC – June 28, 2015) Alison Jackson (TWENTY-16 p/b Sho-Air) and Benjamin Perry (Silber Pro Cycling) won the criterium races on Sunday, closing the elite and para-cycling portion of 2015 Global Relay Canadian Road Championships.

In the men’s race, the pack was ready to roar, and Silber Pro Cycling came out strong with the hopes of securing the title. Benjamin Perry quickly took control of the race, attacking early and staying ahead of the peloton for the majority of the 40km race.

His teammate Alex Cataford launched an attack to chase Perry with about 15 laps to go, and another Silber Pro Cycling rider, Nigel Ellsay, soon launched his chase along with Emile Jean (Équipe du Québec).

Matteo Dal-Cin recognized the opportunity to join his teammates up ahead, also leaving the peloton to join the three-man chase. But with the powerful riders in the chase, Emile Jean was soon dropped, setting up for a four-man Silber sweep. In the sprint of the peloton, yet another Silber riders, Nicolas Masbourian, sprinted to secure the fifth place.

Among the 45 women who started the race, only 11 managed to finish after 28 laps of the 1.3 km course in the industrial heartland of Saint-Georges.

Ultimately, Alison Jackson was the strongest of the day, attacking the small peloton with about ten laps to go. Her efforts were quickly answered by Denise Ramsden, who bridged and stayed with Jackson until 500m to go in the race when Jackson sprinted the uphill finish to the victory. Leah Kirchmann, who won the race last year, crossed the finish line third.

The junior and master championships will be presented starting Thursday July 2 in Thetford Mines.

TOP CANADIAN PARA-CYCLISTS EARN RED AND WHITE JERSEY

(Saint-Georges, QC – June 28, 2015) Forty para-cyclists stormed Saint-George roads in Quebec to compete for the top honors in the road races, for all classes.

Para-cyclists took part in the Championships featuring different distances according to their respective classes on a closed course 6.1km.

Eight Canadian Champion were crowned awarded Sunday morning, with Louis-Albert Corriveau-Jolin (T), Michelle Salt (WC2), Sebastien Héroux (Men C4-5), Alexandre Carrier and Aroussen Laflamme (Men B),  Robbi Weldon and Joanie Caron (Women B), Mark Ledo (Men H3-5), Robert Labbé (MH1-2 WH1-5) and Michael Sametz (MC1-2 WC 4-5) all winning the road race of their respective categories.

The next event for the Canadian para-cyclist will be the 2015 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in Nottwil, Switzerland, followed immediately by the Parapan-American Games in Toronto.

GUILLAUME BOIVIN SPRINTS TO CANADIAN ROAD RACE TITLE IN EXCITING RACE

Benjamin Perry earns Jersey in U23 category

(Saint-Georges, QC – June 27, 2015) Guillaume Boivin (Longueuil, QC) of Team Optum-Kelly Benefits Strategies sprinted to victory today in the Elite Men Road Race at the 2015 Global Relay Canadian Road Championships in Saint-Georges, QC.

Boivin outsprinted his teammate Ryan Anderson (Spruce Grove, AB) and Ryan Roth (Cambridge, ON) of Silber Pro Cycling after 4:34:00 of racing the 185-km challenging course.

The race started with repeated attacks in the first kilometers of racing. Quickly a solid breakaway formed, which included Kris Dahl (Team Smartstop), Derek St-John (Silber Pro Cycling), Michael Woods (Optum-KBS) and Adam de Vos (H&R Block Pro Cycling). The four of them rode away for most the day through the circuits, gaining upwards of four minutes on the peloton.

Eventually, the lead group was joined by Hugo Houle (AG2R La Mondiale), Will Routley (Optum-KBS), Alex Cataford (Silber Pro Cycling) and Rob Britton (Team Smartstop), adding much strenght to the breakaway, which lasted through to 40 kilometre left of racing.

At that point, Routley and St-John attacked the lead group. Responding, a second chase group propelled out of the peloton and joined the main chase group, an bridge attempt that included Boivin, Anderson, Roth, Antoine Duchesne (Team Europcar) Zach Bell (Team Smartstop), and Christian Meier (Orica GreenEDGE).

The group gained upwards of 1m40s on the chase group with less than 15 km to go. Working together well, the duo stayed ahead until the last two kilometers to go when Duchesne managed to pull the chase and bridge to the two attackers.

At the finish line, 12 riders went all out to contest for the coveted Red and White jersey, and it’s Boivin who managed to pull the victory by more than a bike length, winning his first official Canadian Road Race title.

PERRY TAKES U23 TITLES BY CENTIMETERS

Benjamin Perry (Silber Pro Cycling) took the title and Canadian Champion jersey in the Men’s U23 category finishing in fifth place of the combined race, edging Adam de Vos (H&R Block Pro Cycling) by a few centimeters, requiring a photo finish to determine the winner. Alex Cataford (Silber Pro Cycling) crossed the finish line third of the U23 riders, just behind Perry and de Vos.

JOELLE NUMAINVILLE TAKES ROAD RACE CROWN

Numainville sprints to victory to earn the Red and White Jersey

(Saint-Georges, QC – June 26, 2015) Joëlle Numainville (Laval, QC) of Team Bigla Pro Cycling won the road race Elite Women Canadian title Friday in Saint-Georges, QC, taking the crown for the second time on this very same challenging course, and for the third time of her career.

Numainville won the top honors in the 2013 edition of these Championships that took place on the very same course.

Numainville won the coveted Red and White Jersey in a photo-finish sprint against the defending Champion, Leah Kirchmann of Optum p/b Kelly Benefits Strategies. Jamie Gilgen of Rise Racing p/b Cyclepath Woodbridge took third, crossing the line one second after.

This is the third time that Numainville grabs hold of the Red and White jersey identifying her as the Canadian Champion. She won in 2010 in Edmonton, and twice in Saint-Georges in 2013 and 2015.

A series of unsuccessful breakaways were attempted leading up to the St-Odillon circuit in the first 30km of racing. The first real break came courtesy of Leah Guloein (Trek Red-Truck p/b Mosaic Homes) who rode solo for two of the three circuit laps.

Leaving the circuit in St-Odillon, Guloein was caught by a group of approximately 30 cyclists. A few minutes later, it was 2012 Canadian Champion Denise Ramsden (Trek Red-Truck p/b Mosaic Homes) who attacked the lead group, riding solo about 20km and caught with about 5 kilometers to go.

With no attack that stood, the race ended in a sprint finish, and Numainville used her power strength to outsprint Kirchmann in the uphill finish, completing the 108.5-km course in 3:10:22, averaging speeds of 34.2km/h.

Gabrielle Pilote-Fortin (Équipe du Québec), Catherine Ouellette (Equipe du Québec) and Alizée Brien (Team TIBCO-SVB) were the top three among the U23 racers.

Tomorrow, the men group will tackle their road race, using the same course. They will race eight laps of the circuit for a total distance of 186km of racing.

KAROL-ANN CANUEL, HUGO HOULE EARN FIRST CANADIAN TIME TRIAL TITLES

Impressive day of Time Trial at the 2015 Global Relay Canadian Championships

(Saint-Georges, QC – June 25, 2015) The 2015 Global Relay Canadian Championships kicked off in Saint-Georges, QC with the presentation of the time trial races for all categories.

Hugo Houle blasted through the Elite Men group to earn his first Elite Canadian Championships title, earning the coveted Red and White Jersey thanks to a time of 57m13s on the lengthy and challenging 42km course.

Houle was sacred Canadian Champion in both the time trial and road race since his cadet years, including junior and U23 categories. “The only title I have not won is the Elite Road Race.

“The fact that Svein [a 9-time Canadian Champion] was not here was a great opportunity. I had a target on my back today, and I wanted to rise to the challenge. I self-imposed myself a great deal of expectations today, and I am happy to have delivered,” said Houle, who will represent Canada at the Pan-American Games this July. “This title is the fruit of the many years of training and hard work with my coach Pierre Hutsebaut. I stepped up this year, with many good results.”

Houle will take the Red and White Jersey to the highest road cycling platform, the UCI WorldTour. “It’s quite the honor to don the Red and White Jersey on the World Tour, in Europe and across the World. I am really proud to represent Canada. It will certainly add a little more pressure, but I’ll continue to work hard and progress year after year.

Houle now sets his eyes on the Pan-Am Games, in which he will take part in the time trial and road race. “The next challenge will be the Pan-American Games in Toronto. I’ll work on that objective this coming month, and I think I can come out even stronger. This will be a great objective of mine this season, to show that on the road we are still very strong.”

Ryan Roth (Cambridge, ON) of Silber Pro Cycling took the second spot, delivering another strong performance in the time trial. Notably this season, Roth clinched second places at the Redlands Classic and the Tour de Beauce. WorldTour rider Christian Meier (Sussex, NB) of Orica GreenEDE came in third place.

CANUEL TAKES TOP HONNORS IN WOMEN’S TIME TRIAL

The Elite women race was won by Karol-Ann Canuel (Amos, QC) of team velocio-SRAM, riding an impressive race with a final time of 45m05s, averaging a speed of 39.926 km/h. Canuel’s performance was exceptional, earning the Red and White jersey with a lead of 1m17s over her closest competitor, Jasmin Glaesser (Coquitlam, BC) of Optum-Kelly Benefits Strategies. The defending Canadian Champion, Leah Kirchmann (Winnipeg, MB), also of Optum-Kelly Benefits Strategies, took third place crossing the line 2m03s after Canuel’s winning time.

“This title was a big objective for me this season, and I am really thrilled to be Canadian Champion in the Time Trial. My progression really took off when I joined Specialized-Lululemon last year and Velocio-SRAM this season. I took part last year in the Team Time Trial at the World Championships, which we won,” said Canuel.

Canuel won the title just over one year after suffered multiple injuries – a broken back in June, and a broken pelvis suffered in September. “The rehabilitation process was slower than I had wished for. The neck injury healed a bit faster than expected, but the pelvis fracture was a bit longer. I am only starting to find my feelings on the road.”

The women’s course was 30 kilometers in length while the men’s race was disputed over 42km.

PARA-CYCLISTS SHINE WITH REPEAT AND NEW CANADIAN CHAMPIONS

The morning races saw the Para-cyclists attacking the very challenging course. Shelley Gautier (WT1) took the title in the T category, exceeding the National team standard. Mark Ledo (MH4) won the MH3-4 category adding to his National Title collection. Mike Sametz, the young up-and-comer from Calgary, took the title in the WC1-5 / MC1-3 category.

In the WH1-4 / MH1-2 category, Myriam Adam rode to the first place, while Sebastien Héroux won his first National title of the Men C4-5 category, achieving 73% of the National Team standard.

In the B category, the long-standing tandem of Daniel Chalifoux and Alexandre Cloutier took the men’s title while the newly formed tandem of veterans Robbi Weldon and Joanie Caron won the women’s title.

Friday, the women’s road race will be presented while the men will tackle their road race Saturday.

STAR-STUDDED LINE UP FOR 2015 GLOBAL RELAY CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Multiple Canadian Champions are back in action to earn the Red and White jersey

(Saint-Georges, QC – June 24, 2015) The 2015 Global Relay Canadian Road Championships will have many Canadian cycling stars on the start lines, starting tomorrow with the time trial.

A total of 122 men 62 women and 41 para-cyclists will partake in the event.

Notably, World Tour riders Christian Meier (Orica-GreenEDGE) and Hugo Houle (AG2R La Mondiale), as well as Professional continental riders Dominique Rollin (Cofidis) and Antoine Duchesne (Europcar) will be racing to earn the right to wear the Red and White jersey until the next edition of the Canadian Championships.

There are multiple Canadian-based team on the line, including continental teams Silber Pro Cycling, Garneau-Quebecor and Team H&R Block.

Multiple former Canadian Champions in both the time trial and road race will compete this weekend, including Christian Meier, Curtis Dearden (Russ Hays-Accent INN), Ryan Roth (Silber Pro Cycling), Will Routley (Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies), Zach Bell (Smartstop Pro Cycling), Dominique Rollin (Cofidis Solutions Crédit) on the men’s side.

On the women’s side, former Canadian Champions Leah Kirchmann (Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies), Joelle Numainville (Équipe du Québec), Tara Whitten (The Cyclery-Opus) and Denise Ramsden (Trek Red Truck Racing p/b Mosaic Homes) are registered to race.

Defending champion Svein Tuft (Orica GreenEDGE) and former Canadian Champion Ryder Hesjedal (Cannondale-Garmin) will not be present as they are preparing for the coming Tour de France. Leah Kirchmann, which has swept all three women’s titles last year, will be there to defend.

All Cycling Canada Trade Teams are expected to offer stiff competition, including The Cyclery-Opus, Transports Lacombe / Devinci, Jet Fuel Coffee, NCCH p/b Dec Express, Rise Racing/pb Cyclepath Woodbridge (women), SAS-MAZDA-MACOGEPSPECIALIZED (women), Santé Universelle // Marin Bikes, Stingray/Ultime Vélo/Trek and Veloselect Racing Team.

The time trial for the paracyclists start at 9am Thursday, followed at 12:30pm with women and 2pm with the men.

(Saint-Geroges, QC – June 23, 2015) The 2015 Global Relay Canadian Road Cycling Championships begin this Thursday in Saint-Georges, QC with time trials for the Elite and Para-cycling. The women’s road race is scheduled for Friday, and the men’s road race will take place on Saturday. The event will close with the Criterium for the men and women, as well as the para-cycling road races, on Sunday.

Racing will continue on July 2rd in Tethford Mines, QC for the Junior and Master categories.
