SAINT-GEORGES DE BEAUCE TO HOST 2015 GLOBAL RELAY CANADIAN ROAD CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Canada’s top domestic bike race returns to Saint-Georges with Elite and Para-Cycling Championships

(Ottawa, ON – June 15, 2015) Cycling Canada and the corporation du Grand Prix Cycliste de Beauce, the organizing committee of the 2015 Global Relay Canadian Road Cycling Championships, are proud to award the nation’s top domestic road cycling race to the town of Saint-Georges for the third consecutive year.

Cycling Canada has been hosting its Canadian Road Championships for the last four years in the region, since 2012. The 2015 edition will make a return to the same course used in 2013, when Zach Bell won the gruelling men’s road race and Joelle Numainville took the Elite women title despite a flat in the last five kilometers.

Running from June 25-28, the event in Saint-Georges will feature the gruelling time trials on Highway 73, the traditional road race and the fast-paced and exciting Criterium for the Elite, U23 and Para-cyclists. Several hundreds of road cyclists and their support teams are expected to converge to the Lac Mégantic region with the hopes of becoming the newest Canadian Champions.

At stake during any Canadian Championships is more than results, but the opportunity to win the honour of wearing the coveted Maple Leaf Jersey throughout the world as the reigning Canadian Champion.

The event is organized by La Corporation du Grand Prix Cycliste de Beauce. The local committee combined with the Tour de Beauce organization are highly experienced in the delivery of road cycling, having hosted amongst many other races the famous Tour de Beauce for the last 30 years, Canada’ longest-standing international stage race.

“We are honoured and pleased to host the Elite and Para-Cycling Championships in Saint-Georges. The region offer a great competitive platform with roads that will certainly attract Canada’s top cyclists, and crown the best,” said Francis Rancourt.

The mayor of Saint-Georges Claude Morin is very pleased that his city has been selected to receive this event. “If Saint Georges was chosen for this event, it is due in large part to the team of the Corporation of Grand Prix Cycliste de Beauce. We are delighted to receive the cream of Canadian cyclists and we are confident that they will live an unforgettable experience in our soil.”

The event is supported locally by an array of partners, including Cycling Canada, the Fédération Québécoise des sports cyclistes (FQSC), the Town of Saint-Georges, St-Georges Toyota, Le Georgeville, Alex Coulombe Ltée, and the Governments of Quebec and Canada.

GOLDEN DAY FOR CANADA IN ROAD RACES AT PARA-CYCLING WORLD CUP

Gautier and Croteau find winning ways in Italy

(Ottawa, ON – June 6, 2015) Canada’s Shelley Gautier (WT1) and Marie-Ève Croteau (WT2) both raced to the top of the podium in the first road race of the 2015 season, bouncing back from silver and bronze medals in Friday’s time trial.

Gautier stopped the clock at 52:47 after 21.3 kilometers of racing the Women’s T1 category, crossing the finish line 22 seconds before her closest competitor, Yulia Sibagatova of Russia.

Racing in the Women’s T2 category, Croteau returned to the top of the podium after suffering from severe health issues, which began just before the 2012 Paralympic Games. Croteau showed a 20-second lead when crossing the finish line after 45:38 of racing.

Through her rehabilitation, Croteau showed impressive perseverance and determination. And today, the dividends paid off with the gold medal, perfectly following the strategy set forth by the coaching staff.

“Being aware of very limited training in January due to the serious health problem that I had, which deprived me of almost four months of training, I now find myself with two World Cup podiums, said Croteau. “Honestly, I admit that it was a difficult challenge to get here, but I was also trying not to apply that pressure on myself. With my coach Eric Van Den Eynde, we had goals and strategies. We are especially very happy with my road race, in which I applied our strategy to the letter. Thank you to all the staff of Cycling Canada.”

The World Cup in Maniago ends Sunday with the presentation of more road races.

CYCLING CANADA MOURNS THE PASSING OF ROSS CHAFE

(Ottawa, ON – June 2) On Sunday, May 31st, two members of the Whistler Cycling Club, Ross Chafe (50) and Kelly Blunden (53), were killed in a traffic accident when they were struck by a vehicle while on a ride near Pemberton, BC.

Ross Chafe was a member of the National Cycling Team, representing Canada at three World Championships on the road (1979, 1980 and 1986).  He also competed in the 1983 Pan American Games and the 1986 Commonwealth Games.

In addition, Ross served on the Board of Directors of the Hamilton 2003 Road World Championships Foundation for almost a decade and was instrumental in the foundation’s support to developing riders.

Linda Jackson, Chair of the Foundation said; “The news about Ross is simply devastating. Ross was such a kind and generous person. He was always a strong proponent of supporting the development of Canada’s next generation of cyclists. My heart goes out to his family during this difficult time.

On behalf of the members of Cycling Canada we extend our deepest sympathy to the families, friends and fellow riders of Ross Chafe and Kelly Blunden.

CANADIAN CYCLING TEAM NOMINATED FOR TORONTO 2015 PAN AM GAMES

24 athletes chosen to represent Canada

TORONTO (June 1, 2015) On Monday, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Cycling Canada Cyclisme announced the 24 cycling athletes nominated to represent Team Canada at the TORONTO 2015 Pan American Games from July 10 to 26. The announcement was made at the Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parapan Am Velodrome, home of the track cycling events for the Games.

As host nation, Canada will be fielding the maximum 24 cyclists across all disciplines, representing the largest cycling team at the Pan Am Games. A total of 16 cyclists will race in the Track and Road events, in addition to four in Mountain Bike and four in BMX.

Historically, Canada has won 43 medals in cycling at the Pan Am Games: 21 gold, nine silver and 13 bronze. Three cyclists nominated to Team Canada have previously won medals at the Pan Am Games: Laura Brown (2011), Jasmin Glaesser (2011) and Catharine Pendrel (2007).

The cycling competition will take place at multiple venues and include the following events:

  • Road Cycling: men’s and women’s road race, Ontario Place West Channel, July 25; men’s and women’s individual time trial, Milton Time Trial Course, July 22
  • Track Cycling: men’s and women’s team pursuit, men’s and women’s team sprint, men’s and women’s sprint, men’s and women’s keirin, men’s and women’s omnium, Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parapan Am Velodrome, July 16-19
  • BMX: men’s and women’s, Centennial Park Pan Am BMX Centre, July 11
  • Mountain Bike: men’s and women’s cross-country, Hardwood Mountain Bike Park, July 12.

Two key legacy projects that were born out of the 2015 Pan Am Games will bring long-term benefits to the cycling sports. For track cycling, the main centrepiece will be the game-changing world-class velodrome built in Milton, ON – one of only three internationally-sanctioned covered velodromes in North America. It is anticipated that the permanent BMX track at Centennial Park in Etobicoke, located south of Toronto Pearson International Airport, will also bring a wave of new athletes to Eastern Canada.

Canada will field the largest team in its Pan American Games history with more than 700 athletes expected to be named to the Team at the Games in Toronto. With TORONTO 2015 providing a “home Games” experience, as well as a number of qualification opportunities for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, these Games will offer a tremendous experience for Canada’s high performance athlete

QUOTES

“Canada has a great track record in Pan Am cycling with a total of 43 medals since 1967. Our roster of talent this year has everything it takes to keep Canada on its medal trajectory. Congratulations to all of the cyclists who made it onto the Team. Canada will be cheering for you!”

Marcel Aubut, President, Canadian Olympic Committee

“Our cycling athletes are among the world’s best and this is reflected by the outstanding team nominated today. It was such an honour to do what I loved most and cycle for my country and I know these athletes share my passion. Congratulations to each one of our cyclists, you deserve this great honour and Canada will be sure to support you as you take on the best that the Americas have to offer here in the Golden Horseshoe.”

Curt Harnett, TORONTO 2015 Team Canada Chef de Mission

“For these home Games we will be bringing the best cyclists Canada has to offer. There is no doubt that we will be competing for medals in all cycling competitions entered. Our team is comprised of athletes having taken part in previous Olympic Games, riders that have medaled in recent years at the world championships and newly identified talent that will use this experience to build for future games performances. Our preparation started a few years ago when it was announced that Toronto would be hosting these Pan Am Games and has intensified since acquiring international level facilities. Our athletes, coaching staff and support personnel are looking forward to the feeling of pride that comes with competing for Canada in front of Canadians.”

Jacques Landry, High Performance Director and Head Coach at Cycling Canada

“Games events are magical. They are an opportunity to pursue dreams and connect with your nation in such a unique way.  I can’t wait to compete at the Pan Am Games in Toronto!”

Catharine Pendrel, two-time Olympian, two-time World Champion, Commonwealth Games Champion, Pan Am Games Champion, five-time Canadian Champion

“I can’t wait to represent Canada in Toronto for my first Pan Am Games.  It’s always special to wear the maple leaf and race for medals, especially in my home country.”

Tory Nyhaug, London 2012 Olympian, UCI World Championships silver medallist, ten-time Canadian Champion

“We are so proud of those who have been selected to compete for Canada in cycling at the upcoming Pan Am Games. Being able to train here at home in the venues, like the new state-of-the-art Velodrome in Milton will give our team the edge they need to push for the podium. Congratulations to all the athletes chosen, and good luck!”

TARA WHITTEN TAKES SILVER MEDAL AS SHE RETURNS TO INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

Whitten has eyes set on the women’s individual time trial at Rio 2016

(Ottawa, ON – May 7, 2015) Tara Whitten of Edmonton, AB (The Cyclery-OPUS) won the silver medal in the individual time trial race Thursday at the 2015 UCI Road Pan-American Championships.

The London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist took a break from competition after the Olympic Games to focus on completing her doctorate studies. In the spring, she announced her return to competition with the objective to compete for Canada at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Today, she tackled the flat 18-km course with confidence, and crossed the finish line 15s back of Carmen Small of the United States of America, who posted the winning time of 27:55.

“It feels really good to be back in international competition ‎after almost three years away,” said Tara Whitten from Mexico. “My legs were feeling really good today.  My pacing was a little off, but I’m happy that I could hold it together for a strong finish. I’m looking forward to building on this result as the rest of the season unfolds.”

Whitten will next race for the National Team at the 2015 Amgen Tour of California Invitational Time Trial, May 15 at Big Bear Lake.

Adam De Vos (Team HR Block) posted the best time for Canadians in the Men U23 time trial race, in seventh place. Alex Cataford (Silber Pro Cycling) punctured and suffered mechanical issues, finishing ninth.

The road races at the UCI Pan-American Championships will take place Saturday and Sunday.
