A FOUR-MEDAL DAY FOR CANADA AT TRACK PAN-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Canada’s Men Team Pursuit shatters Canadian Record in the process

(Ottawa, ON – September 02, 2015) Canada had a stellar day at the 2015 UCI Pan-American Championships, an important Olympic qualifier, in Chile. The team won four medals: three silver medals and one bronze medal in the opening day of the competition.

The Canadian Men Team Pursuit squad comprised of Remi Pelletier-Roy, Ed Veal, Sean MacKinnon and Aidan Caves qualified with the second fastest time of the morning qualifiers (4:06.198). In the medal session, racing for the gold medal against Colombia, Canada posted a time of 4:03.77 (unofficial), lowering the Canadian record in the process.

After the race, veteran Ed Veal was thrilled with the team and the result: “Insanely proud moment here in Chile. It takes total trust and commitment to do what we did out there on the boards tonight. I love these guys!! That ride was insane!!”

Veal went on to add: “Thank you to everyone who has helped along the way. Thank you to all the wonderful Team Canada coaches and staff. This men’s track endurance program has come so far in such a short period, and I’m so thankful to be a part of it.”

The previous Men Team Pursuit record was 4:05.503 set at the UCI Track World Cup in Guadalajara, MEX, in 2014.

In the women’s 10km scratch race, Allison Beveridge took the silver medal in a nail-biting finish. Both Beveridge and Steph Roorda lined up to race. Argentina attacked immediately, gaining half a lap before Cuba, USA, and Canada, working together, chased it down. There was a flurry of small attacks from all teams, but it seemed everyone was happy to keep it together for a sprint.

However, Argentina went on the attack again with ten laps to go, gaining almost half a lap with five laps remaining before Steph, with Allison in tow, went after her. The Argentina rider was caught by Roorda with two laps to go as USA’s Valente made her move over the top to take the front. Allison managed to maneuver her way onto Valente’s wheel, but the American hung on for the win by half a bike length.

In Sprint action, Canada had teams in both the men and women’s team sprint events. The men qualified with a time of 44.305s and raced for the gold medal. The team represented by Hugo Barrette, Joe Veloce and Evan Carey faced off against the powerful Venezuelan team for the gold medal ultimately ending with the silver medal.

The women’s team sprint, with Monique Sullivan and Kate O’Brien lining up for Canada, were also disputed today. Canada qualified with the third fastest time of qualifiers with a time of 34.028s. Canada earned the bronze medal in the race

Canada’s Women’s Team Pursuit squad will be racing the qualifiers tomorrow morning, with the objective to qualify for the evening finals.

CANADIAN TRACK CYCLISTS AIM HIGH AT PAN-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Canada looking to continue its success in Santiago, Chile, an important Olympic qualifier

(Ottawa, ON – August 26, 2015) Canadian track cyclists enjoyed resounding success at the Toronto 2015 Pan-American Games in Toronto this past July, and they are looking to extend their success next week as they hit the boards of the velodrome in Santiago, Chile.

The team will compete against the very same opponents as during the Pan-American Games, this time at the UCI Pan-American Championships, September 2-6, where critical UCI Olympic Qualification points are on the line.

The sprinters, led by coach and Olympic medallist Erin Hartwell, have the objective to win every sprint event in Chile, and they are bringing their top squad to accomplish the task. Triple-medallists Monique Sullivan and Hugo Barrette will be suiting up for Canada in all three sprint events. The powerful track stars are joined by their teammates and Pan-Am Games gold medallists in the team sprint events in Kate O’Brien, also a silver medallist in the individual sprint, Olympian Joe Veloce, and Evan Carey. Mischa Partridge, a transition cyclist from BMX to track cycling, has been training at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre velodrome under Hartwell’s guidance for the last year. He will join the team for his first international track cycling event.

The endurance program will also set their sights on medals in Chile. The women’s team pursuit squad, ranked third in the World Rankings, will be represented by a younger team. Led by Pan-American Games Gold medallist Allison Beveridge and Kirsty Lay, World Championship medallist Stephanie Roorda and youngsters Annie Foreman-MacKay and Kinley Gibson, the team hopes to make the gold medal race. Coach Graig Griffin will guide the young squad in Santiago.

The women’s endurance team also hopes to win medals in the points race, the scratch race and the individual pursuit.

The men’s team pursuit squad, which took the bronze medal in Toronto, will be racing at these Championships with the objective of a medal, securing its place among the top three nations of the Americas. The team is led by captain Remi Pelletier-Roy, along with veteran Ed Veal, Aidan Caves, Sean MacKinnon and Evan Burtnik.

On top of providing great power to the team pursuit squad, Pelletier-Roy will also put additional focus on the men’s omnium event, where he hopes to solidify a spot for the upcoming UCI World Cup season and the 2016 UCI World Championships.

BEST GAMES EVER FOR CANADIAN CYCLISTS

Canada surpasses all-time medal haul at Major Games

(Toronto, ON – July 26, 2015) Cycling Canada and its Canadian cyclists completed its best Major Games ever at the Toronto 2015 Pan-American Games.

With a medal haul of 20 medals in all cycling disciplines, Canada has more than doubled the previous all-time high of nine medals earned at the 1999 Pan-American Games that took place in Winnipeg.

Jacques Landry, High Performance Director and Head Coach, was thrilled with the performance of Canadian cyclists at these major Games. “These Games have definitely been good ones for cycling, across all of our Olympic disciplines. We obviously came into these Games expecting to win gold medals in some of our marquis events. Our goal, however, remained to reach the podium in each event we entered in, and I believe we came very close to that goal.”

The Games will have a much bigger impact for Canadian cycling in the short, mid and long term. “The unmeasurable impact that these Games have had for Cycling Canada is the degree of awareness that has been acquired by the Canadian public with regards to our programs. It was so great to see the the country to rally behind our athletes in all cycling events, and we hope that this enthusiasm for our sport continues, sparking the interest of our Canadian youth to “Hop On” and become future champions of the road, the mountain bike trails, the dirt jumps or the boards.”

In BMX, Tory Nyhaug got the ball rolling for Canada with a gold medal, laying down the perfect day with wins in all motos, semi-finals and finals at the newly built BMX Track at Centennial Park.

Emily Batty and Raphael Gagné both won gold medals in Mountain Bike, while Catharine Pendrel took the silver medal only seconds behind Batty in what was a Canadian domination at Hardwood Ski and Bike.

The Track cycling events at the velodrome was all Canada, with gold medals in both Men and Women Team Sprints, followed by gold medals in the Men and Women Individual Sprint thanks to Hugo Barrette and Monique Sullivan. The Women’s team pursuit showed their domination in the Americas, easily riding to the gold medal against the United States of America. Sullivan added the gold medal in the women’s keirin, completed a hat trick in women’s sprint events.

Canada completed the track cycling portion of these Games with 10 medals with two silver and two bronze medals.

The road events started on Wednesday with the individual time trial, and pro rider Hugo Houle arrived at the start line in top form, averaging 400 watts of power over 45 minutes, his personal best, to capture the gold medal by 1:17 on the silver medallist. Sean MacKinnon added a surprising bronze medal standing beside Houle on the podium. Jasmin Glaesser, despite an unfortunate flat tire, earned the silver medal of the women’s race.

The road races were also a Canadian affair, with Jasmin Glaesser adding a gold medal to her collection in the women’s race, along with Allison Beveridge taking the bronze. Glaesser earned her fourth medal in as many races, putting her in the Top 3 of the entire Canadian delegation. Guillaume Boivin earned the bronze medal in a nail-biting sprint of three in the men’s road race.

CYCLING CANADA HIRES CAMERON JENNINGS AS NEXTGEN WOMEN’S TRACK ENDURANCE COACH

(Ottawa, ON – June 5)

As of June 1, Jennings is heading the NextGen Women’s track endurance program based out of the Mattamy Homes velodrome in Milton, ON. Through the international success of Canada’s Women’s track endurance program, Cycling Canada has identified the importance of ensuring continued success by increasing the pool size of athletes that would eventually feed into the high performance program.

Through Jennings’ leadership, the NextGen program will underpin the

future international Women’s track endurance performances by working with up to a dozen talented track endurance development women on a daily basis through training track side in Milton and through targeted road and track competitions.

To ensure optimal preparation of the development talent pool, Jennings will be working closely with Women’s Track Endurance Coach Craig Griffin and Women’s Road Coach Denise Kelly.

The new coaching hire originally hails from Australia where he had been employed at the Central Queensland University as an Associate Lecturer (Skill Acquisition and Movement Analysis), coaching local cyclists in his home town of Rockhampton, and working as an assistant coach at Cycling Queensland for National Road and Track Championships.

With accepting this new coaching position based out of Milton, Jennings leaves his more recent role as head coach of the Argyll Velodrome Racing Academy (AVRA). During his tenure at the Edmonton-based academy, the coach developed many athletes that would eventually be selected onto the national cycling team.

“We are extremely happy that Cam (Cameron) has decided to accept our offer to coach our newly-formed NextGen Women’s Track Endurance Program. Given Cam’s coaching knowledge acquired in both Canada and Australia, there is no doubt in my mind that he will be a valued asset to our ever expanding, internationally successful programs,” mentioned Jacques Landry, High Performance Director – Head Coach for Cycling Canada.

“It is thanks to partners like Sport Canada, Own the Podium, Canadian Sport Institute – Ontario and Ontario Cycling Association that we can acquire coaching talent such as Cameron Jennings into our programs, with the sole intent to build a strong cycling nation,” Landry went on to say.

“I am truly honoured to have been named as Cycling Canada’s NextGen Women’s Track Endurance Coach. It is a position that I have long been working toward since I started coaching local cyclists in my home town of Rockhampton some 8 years ago,” said Jennings. “I would like to thank everyone that has helped get me to this point in my coaching career. Upon moving to Edmonton in 2012, I didn’t have any job prospects and was starting a coaching career from scratch.  If it wasn’t for the cycling community/clubs in Edmonton who helped with the creation of AVRA, and the coaching opportunities with the ABA and Cycling Canada, I would not have had the opportunities to develop professionally to a level required for this position.”

Jennings added: “I am excited and looking forward to getting this program up and running, and to be working closely with both Craig Griffin and Denise Kelly as we develop the next group of girls who have been inspired by the success of Cycling Canada’s current Women’s Track Endurance Team.”

The NextGen Women’s track endurance program will reach its full momentum in the fall of 2015, once programming on the track resumes following the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games. Until then, Jennings will be fine-tuning the NextGen Women’s program and scouting more talented athletes that can fill the ranks of this soon to be highly reputed program.

CANADIAN CYCLING TEAM NOMINATED FOR TORONTO 2015 PAN AM GAMES

24 athletes chosen to represent Canada

TORONTO (June 1, 2015) On Monday, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Cycling Canada Cyclisme announced the 24 cycling athletes nominated to represent Team Canada at the TORONTO 2015 Pan American Games from July 10 to 26. The announcement was made at the Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parapan Am Velodrome, home of the track cycling events for the Games.

As host nation, Canada will be fielding the maximum 24 cyclists across all disciplines, representing the largest cycling team at the Pan Am Games. A total of 16 cyclists will race in the Track and Road events, in addition to four in Mountain Bike and four in BMX.

Historically, Canada has won 43 medals in cycling at the Pan Am Games: 21 gold, nine silver and 13 bronze. Three cyclists nominated to Team Canada have previously won medals at the Pan Am Games: Laura Brown (2011), Jasmin Glaesser (2011) and Catharine Pendrel (2007).

The cycling competition will take place at multiple venues and include the following events:

  • Road Cycling: men’s and women’s road race, Ontario Place West Channel, July 25; men’s and women’s individual time trial, Milton Time Trial Course, July 22
  • Track Cycling: men’s and women’s team pursuit, men’s and women’s team sprint, men’s and women’s sprint, men’s and women’s keirin, men’s and women’s omnium, Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parapan Am Velodrome, July 16-19
  • BMX: men’s and women’s, Centennial Park Pan Am BMX Centre, July 11
  • Mountain Bike: men’s and women’s cross-country, Hardwood Mountain Bike Park, July 12.

Two key legacy projects that were born out of the 2015 Pan Am Games will bring long-term benefits to the cycling sports. For track cycling, the main centrepiece will be the game-changing world-class velodrome built in Milton, ON – one of only three internationally-sanctioned covered velodromes in North America. It is anticipated that the permanent BMX track at Centennial Park in Etobicoke, located south of Toronto Pearson International Airport, will also bring a wave of new athletes to Eastern Canada.

Canada will field the largest team in its Pan American Games history with more than 700 athletes expected to be named to the Team at the Games in Toronto. With TORONTO 2015 providing a “home Games” experience, as well as a number of qualification opportunities for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, these Games will offer a tremendous experience for Canada’s high performance athlete
