ROAD TO RIO 2016 BEGINS IN TORONTO WITH CELEBRATION OF CYCLING SUCCESS

Cycling Canada embarks on new quadrennial plan with hopes of topping the Olympic podium in 2016

(Ottawa, ON – October 5, 2012) Cycling Canada, the governing body of cycling in Canada, is kicking off the new Olympic Cycle in style, hosting a celebration of cycling successes in Toronto on October 26th that will feature some of Canada’s top athletes, coaches and cycling alumni.

Dozens of Canada’s cycling stars and alumni are expected to meet in Toronto on October 26th for an exciting evening that aims at celebrating the successes of Canadian Cycling teams on the international scene over the last four years, and kick off the next Olympic-cycle in which Canada aims to increase its medal-performances from the 2012 Games in London.

“We are excited to kick off our road to Rio 2016 with what promises to be a magnificent event in Toronto, ON, this upcoming October 26. Cycling fans from across Canada, especially in the greater Toronto area, will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to mingle with Canada’s top cyclists, Canadian team coaches and alumni – all under a single roof. These last Olympic Games in London inspired our great nation, and has confirmed that we are definitely on track to become one of the top cycling nations in the World by 2020 and beyond,” said Greg Mathieu, Chief Executive Officer and Secretary General of Cycling Canada.

Among the confirmed guests to date are World Champion Catharine Pendrel, three-time World Champion Tara Whitten, the 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Women’s Team Pursuit squad comprised of Whitten, Jasmin Glaesser, Gillian Carleton and Laura Brown, two-time Olympic medallist in cycling and legendary Olympian Clara Hughes, 2012 Paralympic Gold Medallist and two-time World Champion Robbi Weldon, 2012 Paralympic Bronze medallist Marie-Claude Molnar, four-time UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup and UCI Para-cycling Road World Champion Marie-Ève Croteau, track cycling Olympians Monique Sullivan and Joseph Veloce as well as Paralympians Shelley Gautier, Brayden McDougall, Jaye Milley, Robert Labbé, pilot Emilie Roy and Dominique Mainguy.

Prominent coaches are also expected to be present, such as Canada’s top cycling coach and High Performance Director Jacques Landry, former Track World Champion Tanya Dubnicoff, who led Canada’s Women Team Pursuit to a bronze medal at the recent Olympic Games, BMX guru and Canadian team Head Coach Adam Muys, as well as the Canadian Para-cycling Head Coach Eric Van Den Eynde.

More athletes and high-profile alumni are expected to add their names to that list in the next couple days adding to this event that will bring most of Canada’s top stars under one roof for an exciting evening of celebration.

Added Mathieu: “Without the support of our cycling community as a whole, including our athletes, world-class coaches, administrators, officials, financial partners and aspiring partners, as well as with the ongoing support from the Cycling Canada Club and the Vision 2020 group, our ambitious objective of becoming a world-leading cycling nation wouldn’t be possible.  We are very grateful for their continuous support.”

The event will be held on October 26th at the Arcadian Loft in Toronto. Tickets are only $ 50 and can be purchased here: http://www.issmembership.com/oca/events/2012-10-26_Celebration_of_Excellence_October_26/register.asp?volunteer=0

— Gillian Carleton, Canadian Champion, Points race

« It feels pretty nice [to win the Points race]. To be honest, I haven’t been on the track since coming back from London [Olympic Games], so coming here was my first time feeling that speed, and pushing a big gear so it was a little shock to the system. It feels like I have been steadily improving race after race. It’s nice to get the track legs back. It’s beautiful riding here, it’s outside. Very exciting…”

“I just wanted to make sure I scored points on most of the sprints, and win a couple if I could, if I wasn’t gonna put out too much effort. It went really well. I was able to stay near the front and pick up a couple points right from the beginning, which starts the race nicely. I really had only one bad sprint where I wasn’t featured in the top two. It was good, and consistent. “

“I feel pretty tired. I haven’t done anything this intense in one month. Tomorrow is a new day. I just have to recover tonight. Honestly, it’s very nice racing here. It’s always pretty motivational to see the young kids race outdoors in the sun. I am looking forward and see what happens tomorrow – but it will certainly be fun.”

“I’m very happy. This is my first Canadian title in all disciplines (Road and Track), so it’s a little pride for me. I knew the race would be a bit special. There are not a lot of riders here, so I was expecting the race to be a little scattered on the track. I went with a fairly rapid pace because everyone was left to fend for themselves, and this is what happened. I managed to take three laps – and this is how it is done.”

“I feel good about the omnium. I have not done a lot of track lately, but I’ve had a great season on the road and I think my endurance is there, which allows me to recover from a race to another. I expect good things tomorrow. I should recover well tonight. In the Pursuit, I am in good shape, and I have high expectations and I want win it. Day 3 Update from Track Junior World Championships

There were several strong performances by the young Canadian team at the 2012 UCI Junior Track World Championships in New Zealand on Day 3.

Aidan Caves (BC) had four strong events in the six-event Omnium tonight, finishing with a fifth place in the Kilo, good for the 11th place of the overall standings for the first year Junior. Caves had two sub-par performances in the mass start races over the last two days. Caves was over-heard to say “I know I have the speed, I will have to work on my endurance to make the podium in 2013.”

In sprint action, Joakim Albert (QC) had a person best Flying 200m qualification, stopping the clock at 10.4 seconds, landing in ninth. Eric Johnstone (AB) stopping the clock in 10.9 seconds to finish in 15th, Will Simonds did not qualify for the sprint tournament with a personal best 11.6 seconds.

In the first round, Johnstone took the eventual fifth place finisher from Great Britain to the mat with a solid effort, only to come up a little short. He lost his dual just a half a wheel behind his rival, and was knocked out. Albert went through the opening round, defeating an American rider.

In the second round, Albert lost by a wheel, and had to prepare for the repêchage rounds. With the speed of all the competitors, Albert was to take the lead and control from the front. Unfortunately, the other riders had the same game plan, and at the end of a very tough sprint, Albert came second top be knocked out of the tournament. “We will race much more aggressively in the Keiren on Sunday” said the talented sprinter from Quebec.

Audrey Labrie (QC) raced near the front of the scratch race in order to stay away from trouble and be part of any move. The race came down to a sprint finish, with Labrie crossing the line in eight place.

Today, the team start with the Individual Pursuit, featuring Will Simonds and Aidan Caves, the Women’s Omnium with Kinley Gibson, as well as the Points Race with Eric Johnstone. The Women’s Keirin will feature young sprinter Audrey Labrie.

Track Junior Worlds Update – Day 1

Australia, Russia and New Zealand teams led the way as racing wrapped up this evening at the Velodrome. Very hot temperatures greeted the racers, which usually means some very quick times and the sell out crowd were not disappointed.

The Canadian Women’s Team Sprint duo of Kinley Gibson (Edmonton) and Audrey Labrie (Montreal) had a great afternoon of preparation and lined up against the team from Trinidad. The Canadians had a very respectable ride and had a great start, with both riders getting off the line very strong. The exchange was completed without hesitation and the sprint to the line was done perfectly. A sixth place in qualifying for the team and a nice way to start the competition.

Thursday’s events will see the entire six rider team from Canada participating on the track. Spirits are high and the prospects for personal best rides are a real possibility.
