STRONG CANADIAN CONTINGENT HEADING TO JUNIOR TRACK WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Gibson, Bonhomme and Johnstone headline team to compete for World Junior Titles
(Ottawa, ON – July 29, 2013) Cycling Canada is proud to announce the team that will represent Canada heading to the 2013 UCI Junior Track World Championships, hosted in Glasgow, Scotland, from August 7-11.
The team will be strong at this important international race for junior racers, headlined by the two-time Junior Pan-American Champion and 2013 Canadian Junior Time Trial Champion Kinley Gibson (18, Edmonton, AB), three-time medallist at Pan-American Championships Eric Johnstone (18, Calgary, AB), and 2012 Canadian Junior Road Champion and 2013 Pan-American Champion Ariane Bonhomme (18, Gatineau, QC).
First year junior Guillaume Roussel (17, Laval, QC) and 2013 Pan-American Champion Marc-Antoine Noel (17, Drummondville, QC) will be looking to test their skills, while Aidan Caves (18, Vancouver, BC) completes the strong team that will be looking to win World Junior titles against the best junior track cyclists.
“Attendance at the Junior Track World Championships is seen as a crucial developmental step for emerging international track cyclists. The championships provide the experience of competing in a world benchmark event and allow the athletes the opportunity to gain a true measure against an International field,” said Rob Good, who will accompany the Canadian track cycling team heading to Glasgow.
“The group selected have the potential to achieve Top-5 results in specific events, however, more important in 2013 is the delivery of the performance,” added Good.
The championships also provide staff with an opportunity to review and assess the young athletes outside of regional championships with a view to future national team opportunities.
