2013 PARA-CYCLING WORLD CUP FINALS END IN MATANE, CANADA GRABS NINE MEDALS

Canada wins four medals in time trial races and four medals in road races

(Matane, QC – August 25, 2013) The 2013 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cup season came to an end on Sunday with the last set of road races at the Finals in Matane, QC, and Canada concluded the weekend in sixth place of the nation rankings with a total of nine medals.

Canada won four medals in the first two days of competition with four medals in the time trial races, and continued its medal-winning ways in the road races, adding five more medals.

On Sunday, Canada added two medals to its tally with the men’s tandem of Daniel Chalifour (Mont-Laurier, QC) and pilot Alexandre Cloutier (Ste-Antoine-De-Tilly, QC) taking the silver medal after a breakaway that didn’t get brought back, and Nicole Clermont (Sherbrooke, QC) sprinting for the silver medal.

“It’s a little surprising, because that wasn’t the team strategy before the race started,” said Chalifour after the race to Sportcom. “We thought it would end in a sprint, and we wanted to help Alexandre and Aroussen for the finish, since Alexandre is from Matane.”

“We wanted to be part of the initial breakaway, but when we realized that we had a considerable lead, our coach told us to go for the podium. This proves that we are in the game, after our fourth place from Friday’s time trial where we finished just one second from the podium.”

Nicole Clermont took the silver medal in her second world cup race, after winning the bronze medal on Friday in the time trials. The women’s c5 race also ended in a sprint, with three riders coming together at the finish line. Clermont finished between two Americans in first and third places.

In the C1 road race, Jaye Milley (Calgary, AB) finished just off the podium in an exciting finish featuring a six-rider sprint after 1:43 of racing the 66.4 km course. Brayden McDougall (Calgary, AB) did not finish the race.

In the women’s c4 race, Marie-Claude Molnar (Ste-Adèle, QC) was unlucky in the finish of the race. Molnar fell with one kilometer to go in the race, and was well positioned for the final sprint. Molnar did not finish the race despite being a contender throughout the race.

Paralympic Hall of Famer Arnold Boldt (Saskatoon, SK) finished 11th of the men’s C2 race, just under a minute of the winning time, while development cyclist Sebastien Bouchard (Québec, QC) finished 13th of the men’s C4 race.

The Canadian relay team, composed of Charles Moreau (Trois-Rivières, QC), Mark Ledo (Maple, ON) and Robert Labbé (Québec, QC) took the sixth place. The young tandem of Melissa Boivert and Katy St-Laurent did not finish their road race.

Teams from around the world will be boarding a ferry boat on Monday, travelling to Baie-Comeau, QC for the 2013 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships, the last set para-cycling road races in 2013.

THREE MEDALS FOR CANADA; GAUTIER WINS OVERALL WORLD CUP SERIES

Road races start at UCI World Cup Finals in Matane, QC

(Matane, QC – August 24, 2013) Canada added three medals to its tally on Saturday during the first day of road races at the 2013 UCI World Cup Finals in Matane, QC, with Shelley Gautier, Marie-Eve Croteau and Mark Ledo all winning medals.

Shelley Gautier (Toronto, ON) continued on her winning ways in today’s road race, winning the T1 24.9-kilometre race by a large margin of 10:43. Gautier is continuing to show a remarkable progression with her racing speed, and she is looking good in the final week before the World Championships.

In winning this race, Gautier successfully defended her World Cup Title in the class, keeping the coveted White Jersey.

Racing in the T2 class, Marie-Eve Croteau (Québec, QC) is continuing her progression on her return to the competition after missing 10 months due to a concussion, and today proved to be a great motivator for the defending World Champion. Croteau took the second place in a photo-finish, by only a few centimeters, the width of a tire, after 47:20 of racing.

In the H3 road race, Mark Ledo (Maple, ON) ended the gruelling 66.4-kilometre race in third place, a race that ended in a four-man sprint to the finish line. Joel Jeannot was the fastest in the sprint, taking the victory, followed in second by Arkadiusz Skrzypinski of Poland.

“I am very satisfied with this podium today. I am feeling in great form and can’t wait for the World Championships race next week in Baie-Comeau,” said Mark Ledo, after his race.

Three Canadians competed in the H2 race, with a satisfied Charles Moreau (Trois-Rivières, QC) posting the best Canadian result in sixth place. Moreau crossed the finish line 4:46 after the winning time of 1:32:44 posted by Walter Ablinger. Jimmy Pelletier (Québec, QC) ended his day on the roads of Matane in 12th place, while Mark Beggs (Montreal, QC) did not finish the race crashing in a fast and technical area. Beggs did not suffer injuries.

Louis-Albert Corriveau-Jolin (Ste-Claire, QC) finished seventh in the T2 race with a time of 51.01. In the women’s H2 race, Myrian Adam (St-Jean-sur-le-Richelieu, QC) did not finish her race, while Robert Labbé (Quebec, QC) finished seventh in the Men H1 race.

The event continues on Sunday with the last day of competition in this inaugural Para-cycling Road World Cup event in Matane. The teams from all across the world will take a ferry to Baie-Comeau, where they will continue their final preparations for the 2013 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships.

NYHAUG UNBEATABLE AT CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS, WALSH ENDS PERFECT WEEKEND

Both Nyhaug and Walsh repeat victories at Canadian BMX Championships

(St-Albert, AB – August 24, 2013) Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam, BC won his sixth Canadian title since turning Elite, while Amelia Walsh of Ayr, ON completed a perfect weekend on the St-Albert BMX track at the 2013 Canadian BMX Championships.

Nyhaug rode a clean race in the main event, staying outside of trouble from the start to finish. With the victory, the young BMX star now shows a perfect record of six Canadian titles in as many races since joining the elite category three years ago.

“I couldn’t be happier [to get the sixth title]. I did what I wanted to do. Got some clean laps and got a really good start in the main, probably the best lap of the week for me,” said Nyhaug, of his accomplishment.

“I think the only pressure I feel is the pressure I put on myself to perform. Obviously I have some expectations on myself. I always love to come back to Canada and race, an opportunity I don’t get too often. I didn’t really think of the titles I’ve won the past – I just took it one lap at a time.”

“The sport is definitely growing in Canada. Since the Olympics, the sport has grown significantly worldwide. Watching the kids here, there is a lot of talent. I hope these kids stay inspired to stick with the sport.”

James Palmer crossed the line in second place of the action-packed final, while Connor McCormack took the third spot.

In the women’s race, Amelia Walsh rode away with her career first BMX title, after winning the time trial title last night on the same track in St-Albert. The two-time defending champion Sabrina Millman did not race as she was nursing a concussion she suffered on Thursday while training.

“I am pretty happy. Like I said yesterday, I haven’t had a Canadian Championships title prior to coming here, winning both here makes me pretty happy. I want to keep moving forward with my racing, and become Top 20 in the world, hopefully next year,” said Walsh. “I wanted to be aggressive down the first straight, and keep my line in the corners.”

“It was kind of disappointing to hear about Sabrina’s crash [in training]. I look forward to seeing her back here next year,” continued Walsh.

Chelsea Kingston followed behind Walsh for the second place, while Rosemary Adams rode to the third place.

In the junior category, it was once more an affair of the McAdam twin sisters, with Morgan McAdam taking the title and Elaine McAdam crossing in second place just behind her sister. Michelle Berti was third. The junior men title was won by Jared Ennis, with Mackay Leslie and Braden Wood crossing the line in second and third places.

Sunday will feature races of the BMX Canada Cup Series, and some regional races.

CYCLING CANADA HIRES ENDURANCE AND DEVELOPMENT TRACK COACHES

Craig Griffin and Ian Melvin join Canada’s strong track program

(Ottawa, ON – August 24, 2013) Cycling Canada has hired two new coaches to spearhead its track cycling programs.

Craig Griffin will take the helm of the proven endurance program, which produced Canada’s only cycling medal of the 2012 Olympic Games in the women’s team pursuit.

And Ian Melvin will ensure Canada has a steady stream of new track talent as development coach.

“As we build towards the success of our track program at the 2016 Rio Olympics, I’m really happy to have both Ian and Craig come on board,” said Cycling Canada High Performance Director and Head Coach Jacques Landry. “Both of them have extensive track cycling experience that will contribute to our ongoing world-class performances.”

Griffin was the USA Cycling endurance coach at the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Olympics before moving over to Carmichael Training Systems and starting to work with para-cycling athletes. He was head coach of the US para-cycling team from 2008 to 2013.

“I am extremely honored and excited at the opportunity to work with Cycling Canada,” said Griffin. “Their commitment to provide world-class programming and athlete services is a testament to the strong leadership and vision required to raise the bar yet again to place athletes on top of international podiums. I believe that with this new team of support staff and coaches working in a clearly defined performance path, Cycling Canada is in a position to build upon the results of the last four years. It’s great to be a part of a vision, a program and team that is passionate about winning.”

Melvin comes to Canada from Australia, where he was based at the Queensland Academy of Sport from 2007 to 2012, first as regional coach, then assistant coach and finally head coach. He has also worked with the Australian road team and British Cycling.

“I am thrilled to be provided with this opportunity to join Cycling Canada as the new Track Development coach,” said Melvin. “With the building of the new Mattamy Homes Velodrome in Milton and the clear direction on establishing Canada as a leading track cycling nation, the timing could not be better.  There is already a noticeable groundswell of interest and some talented riders identified in the system.”

“We know how fast we need to ride and we know the sort of rider we are looking for. This won’t happen overnight but I am confident that with the continued support from Cycling Canada, we will have a very competitive program by the 2020 Olympic Games.”

With the new coaches in place, Canada’s track cycling program is poised for rapid development – especially once it is based in its new home.

“Coupled with the track program’s upcoming move to the new Pan American Games velodrome in Milton, Ont., in 2014, and the increased commitment of the provincial associations to track cycling, our national coaches are now better equipped than ever to deliver sustainable international performances,” said Landry.

Both Griffin and Melvin will be at the Canadian Track Championships presented by Mike’s Bike Shop in Dieppe, N.B., from Aug. 27 to Sept. 1.

NYHAUG WINS THIRD STRAIGHT TIME TRIAL TITLE, WALSH FINALLY EARNS RED AND WHITE

2013 Canadian BMX Championships begin in St-Albert, AB

(St-Albert, AB – August 23, 2013) Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam, BC, successfully defended his time trial title at the 2013 Canadian BMX Championships in St-Albert, Alberta, while Amelia Walsh of Ayr, ON won her first elite title in the women’s race.

Nyhaug, which finished a remarkable fifth place at the 2013 UCI BMX World Championships after recovering from injuries, travelled the superb track in a stellar time of 30.98 seconds to win his third consecutive Championships time trial race.

“I am happy to win the time trial. I just wanted to come here and have a clean lap, focussing on the back side,” said Nyhaug, who just flew back from Berlin where he competed at an industry event. “I was definitely happy to get a fifth at the worlds, especially coming back from an injury. The way it played out, I felt like I could have stepped on the podium, but its racing and I am happy with being fifth in the world.”

Since turning elite, Nyhaug won all five Championships races in which he took part, clearly establishing himself as the rider to beat.

“Tomorrow is more or less the same as today. I want to focus on the little things, riding my race with clean laps and hopefully win again tomorrow,” added Nyhaug, who represented Canada at the Olympic Games last summer.

James Palmer finished in second place with a time of 32.41 seconds, while Connor McCormack took the third place at 32.84 seconds.

In the women’s race, Amelia Walsh rode away with the time trial title, posting the fastest time of 37.64 seconds, improving from her second place last year. In winning the race, Walsh earned her career first red and white jersey.

“I am super proud. It took me a while to get the red jersey. I haven’t done it yet in my career, and I was pretty stoked,” said Walsh, who finished 24th at the recent World Championships representing Canada. “I love the track here. It’s kind of long, but it pushes your limits. It’s kind of a mini supercross track. The jumps are a little bit smaller, and it’s got a nice start hill that’s a little bit like a supecross track.”

“[Winning] was definitely my objective coming here, especially after the World Championships which were kind of a bummer, and it’s good to be back on,” continued Walsh, who plans to race the supercross race at Chula Vista later this fall.

In second place of the women’s elite race came Chelsea Kingston with a time of 38.24 seconds. Rosemary Adams rounded up the podium with the third fastest time of the day of 38.83 seconds.

In the junior category, Elaine McAdam won the time trial race in the women’s race at 38.34 seconds, topping her sister Morgan McAdam and Erin Kinnie in second and third place respectively. Tanner Vandenhoven won the men’s race with a time 33.84 seconds, crossing the line just 0.07 second before Braden Wood and 0.09 second Hayden Mechielsen.

The competition is held on the newly refurbished track in St-Albert with brand new paved corners, a well-loved track from the group of riders.

The competition resumes tomorrow with the BMX motos and main races at the Canadian Championships.

NATIONS RALLY IN SOLIDARITY BEHIND CANADA AS WELDON AND ROY BEGIN HEALING PROCESS

First day of competition at the Para-cycling World Cup finals

(Matane, QC – August 22, 2013) The 2013 UCI Para-Cycling World Cup Finals in Matane, QC began today with the first wave of time trials, and the entire para-cycling community rallied in solidarity to show their support to the Canadian team that lost its star tandem.

After the highly emotional day that the Canadian Team faced yesterday with the lost of its star tandem due to a motor vehicle accident, the Canadian para-cyclists regrouped to kick start the competition.

Mark Ledo had the best Canadian performance of the day, finishing fourth of the men’s H3 time trial race, approximately 15 seconds from a spot on the podium. Robert Labbé posted his international personal best this season.

Three Canadian competed in the Men H2 race, with Charles Moreau taking the eight spot, while Mark Beggs and Jimmy Pelletier finished 10th and 14th.

In the women’s H2 race, Myriam Adam finished tenth.

The event continues with the second waive of time trials on Friday, and two days of road racing on the weekend.

(Matane, QC – August 21, 2013) Canada will be without two of its brightest stars as the 2013 UCI Para-Cycling World Cup Finals begin tomorrow, currently in hospital after being hit by a car on a training ride in Matane, QC.
