CRITERIUM RACES CLOSE 2012 COLD-FX CANADIAN ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Doyle and Labrie take Junior Criterium titles on last day of outstanding Canadian Championships

(Lac Mégantic, QC – July 1, 2012) Lac Mégantic hosted today the sixth and final day of the 2012 COLD-FX Canadian Road Championships presented by Canadian Tire, and the fan-friendly criterium races were showcased during Canada Day celebrations.

In the featured Junior criterium races, Eliott Doyle raced to the top prize in the men’s race, after 36 laps of the 1.1km course. Emmanuel Gagné (Alma Acura Ultarviolet Devinci) took the second place, followed by Brendan Eztl (Team SpiderTech powered by PowerWatts) in third.

“I’m very happy. Yesterday, I wanted to perform well because I was second in the road race last year, and I put too much pressure on myself and crumbled. Today I was back, now a National Champion,” admitted Doyle.

“We expected to always have a member of the Quebec team in attacks. I am one of the best sprinters in Quebec, so I managed to get to the end and do my job.”

In the junior race, Audrey Labrie (Team Piste.ca) raced to the Maple Leaf jersey. In the 30-lap race, Labrie crossed the finish line first in the bunch sprint, followed by Kinley Gibson (Team Alberta) and Rosalie Cardin-Houle (CC I am Gold).

“I’m really happy since yesterday was such a disappointment for me not to win. To have the title now is a great victory because it allowed me to show others my sprinting abilities,” expressed Labrie. “I wanted to stay in the pack, since I was alone from my team, and I knew there would be a lot of attacks from other teams. I sneaked up to the front in the end. I had to be in second place of the last corner to start the sprint.”

The Masters races were also held prior to the junior races. In the men’s 30+ race, Dominic Picard had an amazing race, riding 32 laps in a solo breakaway towards the gold medal and Canadian title. Stéphane LeBeau won the Masters Men 50+ race, while Olympian John Malois [1992, Barcelona, Points race] won the bunch sprint of the Masters Men 40+ race. Julie Marceau won the only women’s master race, which was held at the same time as the Junior women race.

MCCORMACK AND WALSH ON TOP OF CANADA CUP BMX STANDINGS

A great weekend of racing in Québec for BMX riders

(St-Augustin-De-Desmaures, QC – June 30, 2012) Day two of the new Canada Cup BMX series was held today, and riders Connor McCormack and Amelia Walsh continued on their winning ways in St-Augustin-de-Desmaures, near Québec City.

Amelia Walsh went on to win her second straight Canada Cup race, and takes a commanding lead in the women’s elite standings. Walsh won all three motos today, and secured the top prize and the lead in the general classification of the series.

“I’m pretty stoked to be here in Quebec. I’d like to thank Ontario Cycling and Yess BMX for their support all weekend. I’m looking forward to the next Canada Cup in St. Albert. The Canada Cup series is so important for BMX in Canada and I am so happy to win the first round,” said Walsh, after her day at the office.

In the men’s race, it was a second straight day of domination of Connor McCormack riding with CyclingBC. McCormack won two of the three motos today, to end a two-win weekend.

“Things went well, things went my way. I just tried to stay focused and to the best I could. I ended up with two wins so I am happy,” said McCormack.

The Canada Cup BMX will now travel to St-Albert, in Alberta, for another set of two races, August 25 and 26th. The final and ultimate race of the new series will be held in Abbotsford, after the 2012 Canadian BMX Championships, where the new Canada Cup Champion will be crowned.

Top juniors races for Maple  Leaf Jersey in road races at Canadian Road Championships

(Lac Mégantic, QC – June 30, 2012) Christopher Prendergast of Team Manitoba and Ariane Bonhomme of Team Québec both rode to solo victories today as the Junior Men and Women took part in the road races at the 2012 COLD-FX Canadian Road Championships presented by Canadian Tire in Lac Mégantic, QC.

Christopher Prendergast completed the 111.7-kilometer course in 3:07.26 to take his first Canadian Title in road races. Prendergast, who had won the Canadian Criterium Champion race last year, was pleased with his racing today. “It’s amazing to be a National champion. Certainly beats last year [when I won the Crit].

“I thought the racing was great. I attacked from the last climb [of Mont Morne] and one guy jumped with me. I thought we would work together until the finish, but it didn’t turn out that way. Never at any points I thought I would make it until about three kilometres to go when it was all downhill.”

“I wanted to get in an early breakaway, because sometimes at Junior Nationals, guys work for themselves and the peloton is not always working together. So I didn’t know if the break would get caught. I just jumped in the break, and didn’t work too hard until the last climb where I attacked.”

Two and a half month ago, Prendergast moved to France, where he took part in bigger races. “I’ve done tons and tons of big races over in France, like Category 2s and big junior races. I did lot of training, and took it a little bit easier this past week, and came in all guns going.”

In the seven-man sprint for the second place, Brandon Etlz of Team SpiderTech powered by PowerWatts came in second, followed by Benjamin Perry of Team CHCH in third.

In the women’s race, Ariane Bonhomme also won her race in a solo break. In the last big hill coming back to lac Mégantic for the finish, Bonhomme took the opportunity of a breaking peloton to launch her attack, alongside teammate Allyson Gillard.

“I did not really expect that. This is my first junior year, and this is a first experience for me at Nationals. My goal was to finish with the pack, and I won. I do not even realize it yet,” said Bonhomme, visibly very happy with the top prize.

“My goal was to stay with the girls in the pack. I knew there were some pretty good climbers in the group, and I wanted to stay with them. When the girls started to drop out, I ended up with Allyson, and I knew how she was very strong. I didn’t really an attack, she simply dropped. I felt bad at the same time, because she was my teammate and I knew that the Worlds were her goal this year. At the same time, it is a Canadian Championships – a big race.”

Allyson Gillard, also of Team Québec, finished second at 1 :07 of the winning time, while Audrey Labrie of Piste.ca took the third place.

Tomorrow, the criterium races will be held for all Masters categories, as well as for the Juniors, concluding the 2012 COLD-FX Canadian Road Championships presented by Canadian Tire.

CONNOR MCCORMACK AND AMELIA WALSH WIN HISTORICAL CANADA CUP BMX RACE

The new Canada Cup BMX starts in St-Augustin-de-Desmaures

(St-Augustin-De-Desmaures, QC – June 30, 2012) Connor McCormack and Amelia Walsh both took the top prize at the inaugural Canada Cup BMX race in St-Augustin-de-Desmaures, near Québec City.

McCormack, riding with CyclingBC, easily took the first place of the Men’s Elite category, winning all three motos to combine the maximum points. Michel Beaudoin of BMX Cap de la Madelaine went to finish second, while Vincent Gingras of BMX Pointe du Lac ranked third.

In the Women’s Elite races, Amelia Walsh of Team Ontario also swept clean all three motos. Sarah Biron of BMX Pointe du Lac took the second spot, followed by Amanda Landers of CyclingBC.

A total of 34 riders took part in this first race of this brand new Canadian cycling series. The second race of the series will be held tomorrow, also in St-Augustin-de-Desmaures.

ALL EYES ON PARA-CYCLING AT CANADIAN ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Great para-cycling races for inspiring athletes in Lac Mégantic

(Lac Mégantic, QC – June 29, 2012) The best para-cyclists of this country converged into Lac Mégantic for the road races at the 2012 COLD-FX Canadian Road Championships presented by Canadian Tire.

In the tricycle race, Marie-Ève Croteau, the reigning T2 World Champion and current World Cup leader, took the victory on a difficult race. Louis-Albert Corriveau-Jolin, who will be competing in his first World Cup next week in Baie-Comeau, took the second place just a few second behind Croteau. Shelly Gautier, who’s also a multiple World Champion in the T1 category, took third place.

In the men hand cycle, Mark Ledo took an impressive victory over his competitor. Ledo sprinted away from the group at the start of the race, and rode solo the entire 45-km course. Ledo, of Maple, Ontario, crossed the finish line with a time of 1:16.10. Mark Beggs finished second, 8:30 behind Ledo’s time, while Rico Morneau was third. In the H1 race, Robert Labbé won the race while Myriam Adam came in second.

In the tandem race, only three groups were on the start line, two women and one man. Robbi Weldon and pilot Lyne Bessette rode away with the victory in the women’s race, while Daniel Chalifour and pilot Alexandre Cloutier finished the race, solo on the course.

In the C category, Arnold Boldt took the victory in the final sprint at the finish line. Boldt, an inductee into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and Canadian Paralympic Hall of Fame, won his third Canadian championships. Since making his beginning in cycling, Boldt won all three Canadian championships in which he took part.

“This was definitely the hardest road race at Canadian Championships I’ve been at. Jaye Milley very, very strong rider. We were on the edge to then end. It was the best, the hardest that I have done in a long time. I am very appreciative of it. It’s a beautiful jersey!” said Boldt.

In second came Jaye Milley, a few seconds behind Boldt. The two of them stayed together for the most part of the race, and Boldt sprinted to the victory in the last 25 meters. Marie-Claude Molnar, the current World Cup leader, took the third place.

The Canadian Para-Cycling team will be racing next week at the third and last UCI World Cup of the 2012 season, the last international competition before the 2012 Paralympic Games.

MASTERS RACING AT ITS BEST IN LAC MÉGANTIC

Road races for Masters showcased at 2012 COLD-FX Canadian Road Championships

(Lac Mégantic, QC – June 29, 2012) The second day of the second weekend at the 2012 COLD-FX Canadian Road Championships presented by Canadian Tire went without a glitch on a beautiful day in Lac Mégantic, QC.

The day started with four races, Masters 50-59 and 60+ for the Men, and the two Masters women categories, and then continued in the afternoon with a second wave with the Masters Men 30-39 and 40-49.

In the Masters Men 30-39, Brandon Sant was the fastest of the large peloton. In an exciting sprint finish, Sant was the first to cross the finish line, after 121.4 kilometers, the longest race of the day. Charlie Gorman was second, while François Doyon took third.

In the 40-49 categories, Pascal Buissières crossed the line in first place, taking the ultimate prize in cycling, the Maple Leaf Jersey. Buissières completed the 106.8km course in 3:07.22.

Don Zuck was the first to cross the finish line in the Master 50-59, taking the Maple Leaf jersey with a time of 3:02.48, completing the 106.8 km course. In the Masters 60+, Pierre l’Écuyer took the victory, crossing the finish line alone with a time of 3:10.55.

Both Masters Women categories finished the gruelling 92.2-km course in a nail-biting sprint, with Pascale Legrand (Masters 30-39) and Carole Vanier (Masters 40+) taking the victory in their respective categories after 2:56.06 of racing.

The 2012 COLD-FX Canadian Road Championships presented by Canadian Tire continue Saturday with the road races for the junior and para-cyclists, and end on Sunday with the criterium races.

NEW HIGH PERFORMANCE DEVELOPMENT SERIES FOR BMX TO KICK OFF THIS WEEKEND

St-Augustin-De-Desmaures to host historical races for up and coming BMX riders

 (St-Augustin-De-Desmaures, QC – June 29, 2012) The 2012 Canada Cup BMX will have its inaugural races this weekend in St-Augustin-de-Desmaures, near Québec city, and three high-profile names will be present to compete for the top honours.

The best up-and-coming BMX riders will battle it out side-by-side on Saturday and Sunday in the first-ever Canada Cup BMX races. Racing starts at noon on Saturday, and at 11am on Sunday at the BMX track. The two races are sanctioned for the Canada Cup by Cycling Canada.

“It is an important week-end for BMX in Canada with the introduction of the BMX Canada Cup. I’m confident that the Canada Cup can become a pillar series in the development of the next generation of riders, and it’s starting now!,” said Mathieu Boucher, director of development for Cycling Canada.

This weekend, Connor McCormack, Jim Brown and Amelia Walsh will all be racing, among the group, for the top prize, and contend for the championship title.

The Canada Cup BMX Series is a five-race series, with two races presented in Québec, two in St-Albert, AB and one in Abbotsford, BC. The series is open to all individual riders with a valid UCI license in the Junior development (U14-16), Junior (U19) and Elite categories.

The series came to life this year due to the growth of the action-packed cycling sport, which made its debut at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The inaugural Canada Cup BMX Series champion will be crowned in Abbotsford, a few days after the 2012 Canadian BMX Championships. The best four results of a rider will determine his or her final overall ranking.

Each day of racing will be run as a separate event, using UCI rules and Cycling Canada BMX specific regulations. One event each weekend will be registered on the UCI Calendar as a UCI Class 5 or higher event, the other day will be registered on the Cycling Canada calendar as a National Calendar event.

NEW CANADIAN CHAMPIONS CROWNED AT ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Para-cyclists, Juniors and Masters begin their Championships with Time Trials races

(Lac Mégantic, QC – June 28, 2012) New Canadian champions were crowned today in Lac Mégantic as the 2012 COLD-FX Canadian Road Championships continued for the juniors, masters and para-cyclists.

In the junior women, the surprising Saskia Kowalchuk (Team CHCH) won top honors in the time trials, stopping the clock at 22:17 after 15 kilometers of racing. The young cyclist from Ontario was pleased with her efforts: “Being Canadian champion and to wear the Maple Leaf jersey is very surreal right now. It was quite unexpected. I missed my high school graduation to be here, so I had to compensate and do well here! I am quite happy to go home with the jersey.”

“The course is relatively flat, which benefited me because I am strong in these sections. I had therefore to make time during the flat sections. My coach Rick Lee and I worked a lot on motor pacing, and on the Computrainer to improve my wattage.”

“I must thank my coach Rick Lee, the team president Lloyd Fairbairn who lent me the bicycle on which I rode today, my family and friends and the entire team.”

In men’s juniors, it’s Nigel Ellsay of Cycling BC team that climbed on the top step of the podium. Ellsay, who last year won the silver medal at these Championships, crossed the finish line after 30km race in a time of 40: 30.88.

“I have been working for the last six months. I am really happy to get it over with,” said Ellsay, who spent some valuable time in France earlier this spring. “I headed over to France in the March, and spent 3.5 months in a French club team. Midway through, a rider dropped out and I had the privilege to go race at a Nations Cup in Germany with the national team. I gained valuable experience and finished 13th in the General Classification. It’s a good spring!”

“It’s a pure time trial course. I have been working really hard the last couple of months. It feels great to win the Maple Leaf Jersey. It’s a big relief, since I have been working towards this objective for the last two months. Last year, I was second and I really wanted it. This year I finally got it.”

Young Marc-Antoine Soucy (Team CC I am Gold) finished in second place with a time of 40:49, while Adam Jamieson (Team CHCH) finished third, just one second off the second place.

In para-cycling, Arnold Boldt, won the race in the C category. Boldt, a veteran Paralympian who had an outstanding athletic career, proved he is still a force in the sport.

The leader of the World Cup tour and defending World Champion in T2 Marie-Eve Croteau has in turn been the fastest among the tricycles, finishing ahead of rookie Dominique Mainguy, second, and the World Champion T1 Shelley Gautier, third.

Mark Beggs won top honors in the handcycle category. Beggs posted the fastest time, followed by Charles Moreau, who was the surprise of the day, and Mark Ledo.

In tandem, Daniel Chalifour along with pilot Alexandre Cloutier, Canada,s top ranked men’s podium, were the fastest ahead of World Champion tandem formed by Robbi Weldon and pilot Lyne Bessette. Brian Cowie and Ed Veal finished third.

The 2012 COLD-FX Canadian Road Championships presented by Canadian Tire continue tomorrow and Saturday with the road races, and end on Sunday with the criterium races.

PLANNING FOR THE 2013-2016 QUADRENNIAL AND BEYOND

When the Cycling Canada Board of Directors gathered in Ottawa for their semi-annual meeting in mid May of this year they were pleased to have the results of the extensive surveys done with our shareholders and stakeholders to feed into the strategic planning process that is underway for the 2013-2016 quadrennial and beyond.

The inputs were received through three specific surveys and interviews.  The largest survey was mounted on the Cycling Canada website and also made available through a number of cycling media partners and received a strong response with over 560 cyclists, coaches, officials and others taking the time to provide their opinions and perspectives on various areas related to the national and provincial cycling associations and their respective roles.  A second survey was completed by members of Cycling Canada program committees and advisory groups and offered more detailed responses from those that are directly involved in the programs and activities of the national association.  Finally, interviews were held with senior staff and Board members of each Provincial / Territorial cycling affiliate of Cycling Canada to gain their insights on how they see the national body working with and on behalf of the affiliates in the future.

This data was delivered to the Board by two consultants who had undertaken the collection and analysis of the information.  Robin Porter carried out the interviews with the Provincial/Territorial Cycling Associations that are affiliated to Cycling Canada and Rose Mercier gathered and analyzed the responses to the two surveys noted above.

This environmental assessment was supplemented by two benchmarking reports that covered National Sport Organizations of similar size and characteristics and National Cycling Federations of other countries that had common characteristics.

This is what we heard (themes from Input):

With all of this information to support the planning process, the Cycling Canada Board carried out the initial planning work on the strategic plan with attention to the inputs received from shareholders and stakeholders.

This represents the frame for the plan and acknowledges that there are some areas that the community wants to see more support and activity in and areas where there is less support or, in some cases, understanding as the program or activity is not well promoted or communicated.  With this in mind the highlights of this initial planning are summarized below for the major areas of Mission, Vision and Strategic Imperatives.

Cycling Canada exists to pursue world class results by leading high performance programs and enabling the development of athletes.

Vision

Canada is a leading competitive cycling nation, consistently celebrating international success.

Strategic Imperatives /2020 Strategic Goals

Resources

Grow the human capital and discretionary funding necessary to achieve strategic goals.

Development

Consolidate and strengthen a national structure enabling coordinated initiation and progressive development of cyclists.

High Performance

Enhance and expand the system of professional-quality support for Canada’s competitive cyclists.

Profile

Move Canadians to take pride in Canada’s national cycling team and their accomplishments.

Next Steps

Once the London Olympic Games are concluded the Board and management will return to the planning work and set out the goals and strategic drivers for each of the imperatives noted above.  Specific key performance indicators (KPIs) will be set in each area and the time in which they are to be accomplished will be built into the consistent evaluation of the KPIs by Cycling Canada.

Once this is done in draft form the opportunity to discuss the draft with our primary shareholders, the Provincial / Territorial cycling associations will be provided at the October 2012 Annual General Meeting where we will have a facilitated session on the national association’s plan and how it aligns or helps align with provincial / territorial plans.

Early in 2013 we expect to have the strategic plan for 2013-2016 approved and begin its implementation in April of next year.

BAIE-COMEAU WELCOMES BEST PARA-CYCLISTS FOR WORLD CUP FINALS

Canada to send strong team, including four World Cup leaders

(Ottawa, ON – June 27, 2012) From July 6-8, the World’s best para-cyclists will converge to Baie-Comeau, QC for the 2012 UCI Para-Cycling World Cup Finals, and Canada will have a strong delegation to defend its colors on home soil.

Heading into the event, Canada will have four athletes wearing the coveted UCI White Jersey, worn by the overall World Cup leader: Marie-Claude Molnar, Marie-Ève Croteau, Shelley Gautier and the tandem of Robbi Weldon and Lyne Bessette.

The event in Baie-Comeau will be the last international para-cycling event prior to the 2012 Paralympic Games, in London.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Paramanic International, Baie-Comeau hosted in 2010 the UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships, as well as the UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cup Finals in 2011.
