REMINDER: BID FOR CUSTOM UCI TRACK CHAMPIONS LEAGUE BIKES IN SUPPORT OF CANADIAN CLUBS

Ottawa, ON (Dec. 5, 2022) – Only one week remains to place your bid on a customized frame ridden by Canadians to medal performances at the 2022 UCI Track Champions League. Proceeds from the auction directly benefit local clubs to foster the next generation of cycling champions riding for the maple leaf.

The unique community fundraiser presented by Cycling Canada, Argon 18 and VéloColour saw five athletes represent their communities for the duration of the series, which ran across Europe from Nov. 12 to Dec. 3, with bikes painted in the colours of their respective home clubs.

Kelsey Mitchell of Sherwood Park, AB, rode her royal blue frame to second place in the women’s sprint standings in support of Juventus Cycling Club, based in Edmonton, AB.

British Columbia was heavily represented in women’s endurance. The yellow of Burnaby Velodrome Club stood out on track as Maple Ridge native Maggie Coles-Lyster pedaled to third in the standings.

“It means so much for us to be able to share in Maggie’s story and journey,” said a representative from the Burnaby Velodrome Club. “This frame represents her, us, and cycling in BC. The person that purchases it will have a piece of all of us in it. We hope that the proceeds will help us to be able to continue to share our blood, sweat, tears, joy, loss, pain and passion.”

Victoria’s Sarah van Dam and Tripleshot Cycling followed in eighth place with their distinctive teal frame.

In the Men’s Endurance standings, Mathias Guillemette of Trois-Rivières, QC, placed fifth on the light blue frame of the Centre National de Cyclisme de Bromont of Bromont, QC.

The classic red of the National Cycling Institute Milton in Milton, ON, shone under the lights as Dylan Bibic of Missisauga, ON, rode to 11th place.

CYCLO-CROSS ATHLETES CAP OFF FINAL CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS OF 2022

Saanich, BC (Nov. 27, 2022) – There was excitement at Layritz Park in Saanich, BC. The city on Vancouver Island played host to the 2022 Canadian Cyclo-cross Championships, an exciting return after two consecutive years without Championship racing in the discipline. Nearly 300 athletes raced the 3.6 kilometre course through the cold, wond, rain and mud all for a spot on the podium and to bring home a maple leaf jersey.

There were plenty of heavy hitters including Michael van den Ham who was looking to defend his Championship title in the men’s Elite category. In the end, it would ultimately be Tyler Clark who would run away with the lead and take home his first ever Championship title.

“I definitely wanted to be the first one into the first technical section, it’s so hard packed and it was so slippery, and I knew if I made a mistake, everyone else me was going to make a mistake too,” explained Clark. “Last time we had a Championships I was third to Gunnar [Holmgren] and Tyler Orschel, and ever since then I’ve been wanting that maple leaf jersey.”

On the women’s side, the Holmgren sisters continued to dominate with Isabella Holmgren taking the win and title in the women’s Junior category. Later, her twin sister, Ava, would have the opportunity to race against a stacked Elite field including Sandra Walter, Ruby West and Jenn Jackson. It would ultimately be Ava who would dominate the field continuing to show her depth, speed and tactics to take the win over Walter.

“I feel like it all came down on who could ride the smoothest and with the least amount of mechanicals,” said Ava after her win. “I was trying to look at racing with the Elites, as a Junior, as more of a challenge than a risk, and it turned out really well. If someone told me three years ago that I would be wearing the Elite jersey, I wouldn’t have believed them so I’m really happy about that.”

Overall, 14 Canadians climbed to the top of the podium and solidified their titles in the final Canadian Championships of the 2022 season. All winners can be found below with full results found here.

CYCLING CANADA BECOMES ABUSE-FREE SPORT SIGNATORY ON DECEMBER 21

Ottawa, ON (Nov. 23, 2022) – Cycling Canada is pleased to announce that it has signed an agreement to join Abuse-Free Sport, the new program delivered by the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada (SDRCC) to prevent and address maltreatment in sport.

Cycling Canada and its stakeholders at the national level will have access to the services of the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner (OSIC) following a transition period that will end no later than Dec. 21, 2022. The OSIC serves as the central hub within Abuse-Free Sport and operates independently to address complaints concerning alleged violations of the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport (UCCMS).

“Cycling Canada recognizes that safe sport is everyone’s responsibility,” said Cycling Canada Chief Executive Officer Matthew Jeffries. “We’re fully committed to doing our part to support a growing national movement that is changing the culture of sport in this country. As part of that commitment, we’re pleased to sign on to Abuse-Free Sport and to soon have the OSIC administer our Safe Sport complaints. The sport community has been asking for just this kind of consistent national program. It’s an important step forward for everyone involved in sport in Canada.”

Cycling Canada has adopted the UCCMS and is in the process of making the required internal policy adjustments to accompany this important step forward. The transition period will include further updating of the organization’s Safe Sport policies, information sharing to its members and the completion of consent forms from individuals designated as UCCMS Participants.

Prior to Dec. 21, 2022, Cycling Canada participants who have experienced or witnessed abuse will continue to have access to independent, third-party complaint management services through W&W Dispute Resolution Services (safesport_wwdrs@primus.ca).

More information on Abuse-Free Sport and the OSIC can be found here. For further details on Cycling Canada’s Safe Sport services, click here.

CANADIAN CYCLO-CROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS RETURN AFTER TWO YEARS

Saanich, BC (Nov. 22, 2022) – Athletes from across Canada are getting ready for the 2022 Lazer Canadian Cyclo-cross Championships in Saanich, BC, after two years without Championship racing in the discipline.

While riders in U13, U15, U17 and Sports categories will race for a spot on the podium, it will be the Junior, U23, Elite and Masters classifications who aim to take the maple leaf jersey home and the title of 2023 Canadian Cyclo-cross Champion.

“We are thrilled to be heading to beautiful Saanich, BC for the 2022 Lazer Canadian Cyclo-cross Championships,” said Josh Peacock, Director of Marketing & Events at Cycling Canada. “With a rich history of cyclo-cross event hosting on Vancouver Island, this event promises to deliver the atmosphere and excitement that the cyclo-cross community has come to expect of the Canadian Championships. Following a two year hiatus of the event, we’re very much looking forward to bringing the Canadian cyclo-cross community together again.”

Familiar names include the current Canadian Cyclo-cross Champion Michael van den Ham, who has won four maple leaf jerseys and will look for his fifth Championship title on the weekend. Ruby West will also be in attendance after coming off her track season, where she competed at the Track World Championships earlier this year. Switching gears, the Dundas, ON, rider says she’s excited to be back racing cyclo-cross as she pursues her first Elite Canadian title.

“I’m so excited to be coming out to Canadian Cyclo-cross Championships this year,” said West. “I was bummed when the last few years’ nationals got cancelled, first because of COVID in 2020, then flooding in 2021. I felt like this was finally my chance to get out to some west coast cyclo-cross and the fact that it’s Canadian Championships makes it extra special! My goal any time I race at Canadian Championships is always to race for a jersey, so I’m going to do my best to chase that. I’m not sure where my form or other rider’s form is at. All I do know is that it’ll be a great battle with whoever shows up and I cannot wait!”

Championship racing will be on Nov. 26 across categories with the TREK Bear Crossing Grand Prix the following day. Live timing and full results can be found on the events page of the Cycling Canada website.

TWO WORLD TITLES & ONE SILVER MEDAL FOR CANADA AT PARA CYCLING TRACK WORLDS

Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France (October 24, 2022) – Team Canada concluded the 2022 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines in France, with a total of two world titles, one silver medal and plenty of personal bests. Over the four days of competitions, newcomer to the national team, Mel Pemble made her name known after winning both rainbow jerseys at her first World Championships of her young career in both the Scratch Race and the Omnium in the women’s C3 category. Veteran and Paralympic and World Championships medallist added another medal to her impressive resume after taking the silver in the women’s C4 500-metre Time Trial.

“It’s an incredible performance for sure, I knew she [Pemble] had it in her,” commented Sébastien Travers, National Team Coach. “She’s got some experience on the track and we just tried to rehearse what she normally does at home and to execute the races – at our best capacities. She was at the right place at the right time and then just did a master effort at the end, which paid off.”

On the first day of competition, Pemble beat the world record in the 200-metre Sprint, taking the win in the first event of the Omnium competition. Her win in the Scratch Race, which also counted towards the overall in the Omnium allowed her to cumulate enough points to stand at the top of the standings. She ended the four events with a total of 150 points, just 2 points in front of Aniek Van den Aarsen from the Netherlands, ultimately winning the world title.

On the final day of racing, Pemble, O’Brien and Alexandre Hayward all capped off their racing schedules to take part in the Mixed Team Sprint event, where they raced their way to an 11th spot with a time of 57.311.

All results can be found here.
