REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN FOR 2014 CANADIAN MOUNTAIN BIKE MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS

Marathon Championships to take place in Squamish the day after Canada Cup MTB XC Finals

The 2014 Canadian Mountain Bike Marathon Championships will take to the trails of Squamish, with some of the best cross-country mountain bikers battling it out for long-distance supremacy.

The Championships course will feature the same trails as the regular JABR presented by Pearson Financial Services LTD, but with a couple of extensions added on to total over 60 kilometers of racing.

These Marathon Championships will be presented on Aug 16, 2014, the day following the 2014 Canada Cup MTB XCO Finals. The event is a great opportunity for cross-country mountain bikers to participate in two high-level races on the same weekend in the same area.

THREE CANADIANS REACH PODIUM ON FINAL DAY AT WORLD CUP FINALS

Gautier, Croteau and Milley race to podium performances at Para-Cycling Road World Cup Finals

(Cantimpalos, Segovia, ESP – July 27, 2014) Three Canadians – Shelley Gautier of Toronto, ON, Marie-Ève Croteau of Québec, QC and Jaye Milley of Calgary, AB – won medals in the road races at the 2014 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cup Final in Spain.

Gautier completed her World Cup season undefeated in the T1 class, having won all her races. Today, she dominated the field by lapping all of her competitors, and finished the course after an hour of racing. Gautier, the reigning World Champion, will defend both of her rainbow jerseys in South Carolina next month.

Marie-Ève Croteau, racing in the T2 class, took the second rank of this last race of the World Cup season, finishing behind Carol Cooke of Australia. She also finished second to Cooke in the time trial race on Friday. This season Croteau started on a positive note, winning both races in her comeback from more than a year of rehabilitation after suffering from a devastating crash prior to the Paralympic Games in London.

Both Gautier and Croteau ended the 2014 UCI World Cup season with the White Jersey, awarded to the World Cup Champion.

In the men C1 class, Jaye Milley bounced back on Sunday to win the bronze medal in the road race after finishing in eight place of the time trial. Milley took off with two German riders and finished third after an intense sprint for the second place, finishing just four seconds behind the winner.

Milley’s teammate Wilson Ross of Sherwood Park, AB finished in fourth place of the same race, his first mass-start road race at the World Cup level. Wilson snagged the bronze medal on Friday in the time trials, his first ever World Cup race.

The next major event for the Canadian para-cycling team will be the UCI World Championships, scheduled to take place Aug 28-Sept 1 in Greenville, South Carolina. Canada will field a large team for the event on North American soil.

TORY NYHAUG WINS SILVER MEDAL AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Daina Tuchscherer makes finals and finishes in eighth place

(Rotterdam, NED – July 27, 2014) Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam, BC took the silver medal on Sunday in the BMX Supercross main event at the 2014 UCI BMX World Championships in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Canada’s BMX superstar, who was fifth at the World Championships last year, rode to his career best performance, proving that is a force to reckon with when at the start line. Throughout his young career as an Elite rider, Nyhaug rode three times to the podium, including a third place this season in Manchester, and twice in second place last season.

“The day went great. It was a battle out there with this track. There was no separation, and we had to fight for every inch. I honestly rode the best I possibly could… so stoked with the silver medal,” said Nyhaug, the six-time Canadian Champion, who started BMX racing at age 4.

Nyhaug overcame lots of adversities throughout his career, suffering from ruptured spleens in 2010 and 2012, just 11 weeks before the Olympic Games in London. He bounced back in 2013, finishing twice on the World Cup podium and fifth at the World Championships.

Ken Cools was thrilled with the team’s performance today, especially on Tory Nyhaug’s performance: “Tory Nyhaug – the kid is just an animal. Doesn’t matter how he goes in practice, when it comes down to racing, he proves time and time over that he is a playoff player. He came back faster and faster from each lap. He capitalized on other’s mistakes and used his own strength and abilities to take the number 2 spot in the main event.”

In the junior women’s race, Daina Tuchscherer of Airdrie, AB also rode all the way to the main event in her first participation at World Championships and took the eighth place.

“It was honestly one of the greatest experiences I have ever had so far. I rode well in the semi-finals, so I was pretty excited. In the main, I was just so happy to be there. This is just the beginning for me, so this is really exciting,” said Tuchscherer.

Cools also had some great words for the young junior women rider from Airdrie, AB. “Daina is the girl of the future. She had a fantastic day, winning throughout the day. In the finals, she was in the top 5 but bounced back in the eighth place of the junior women final, which is a great feat for a first year junior rider.

Cools continued on the other Canadian performances: “In the Elite men, all of our guys had great rounds, and they battled very hard throughout the day. Tanner Vandenhoven had a great day as well in the junior men, making it to the second round. Unfortunately for him, he had an outside lane and couldn’t use his third place advantage down the first straightaway, and got hung out on the first turn. He battled very hard.”

The 2014 Canadian BMX Championships will be held October 3-5 in Drummondville, QC.

THE CHALIFOUR/CLOUTIER TANDEM TAKES THE SILVER MEDAL AT WORLD CUP

Silver medal is “icing on the cake” for the two riders who were focussing on the time trial this weekend

(Cantimpalos, Segovia, ESP – July 26, 2014) The first set of road races took place today at the 2014 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cup Finals in Spain, and Canada’s men tandem formed by Daniel Chalifour and Alexandre Cloutier tandem rode to a silver medal among a large peloton of 34 tandems in the category.

“We are very satisfied with the performance in the road race, especially since we were aiming for the TT, where we finished fourth just 19s off the top of the podium. The road race medal today is just the icing on the cake,” said pilot Alexandre Cloutier.

Canada’s Para-Cycling Program Director, Arnaud Litou, was pleased with the efforts of his troops today, who raced in grueling conditions. “The conditions were extremely difficult today, with temperatures hovering around 30deg Celsius in the morning, and a sun that was relentless. Canada posted some great performances within four weeks of the World Championships in Greenville, South Carolina.

The World Cup Finals end tomorrow with the remaining road races for the C, as well as a team relay race.

DAINA TUCHSCHERER RIDES TO SIXTH PLACE IN THE TIME TRIAL SUPERFINALS AT BMX WORLDS

(Rotterdam, NED – July 26, 2014) Daina Tuchscherer of Airdrie, AB rode to the sixth place in the junior women Time Trial SuperFinals at the 2014 UCI BMX World Championships in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

The young woman from Alberta is competing at her first World Championships, in the junior category. Tuchscherer squeezed into the Time Trials SuperFinals after finishing eighth of the qualifying round. The top 8 riders were selected to race the evening’s medal race.

“The run went pretty good. It was almost a second faster than the lap leading into the finals. I am pretty stoked about that lap. I am feeling a lot more relaxed before tomorrow, knowing that I made it Top 8 pretty easily. I had a good ride,” said Tuchscherer from Rotterdam.

In the Elite Men, Canada’s Tory Nyhaug placed 12th of the SuperFinals. “The SuperFinals run was alright. I had a lot of speed on the straightaways. In this type of track, it’s tough on the backside when you’re pushing. I made a couple of mistakes, and that was the difference. I’m healthy and ready for tomorrow.”

Ken Cools, head coach of the Canadian team, was happy with the team’s performance. “Overall, I believe the day was a great success. The Elite men all had very good laps, with Tory moving on the Time Trial SuperFinals. He’s looking in good form to race the motos.”

“In the junior ranks, Daina Tuchscherer had a fantastic lap and qualified for the SuperFinals, where she finished sixth. She has great energy and was fully there mentally. She put down the best effort she could, and the future looks very bright for that young lady.”

Tomorrow, all eyes will be turned on the BMX Supercross motos and main events, the queen event of the BMX World Championships.

WILSON ROSS STEPS ON PODIUM IN FIRST EVER WORLD CUP RACE

Canada’s tricycles continue dominance at international para-cycling events.

(Cantimpalos, Segovia, ESP – July 25, 2014) Over 300 para-cyclists from all around the world participated in the opening day of competition at the 2014 Para-Cycling Road World Cup Finals in Cantimpalos, Spain, the biggest participation of all times at a para-cycling World Cup event.

Canada has a large team of 18 athletes present with the objective of winning medals and cumulating the most points possible towards the Paralympic Games qualification process.

In the men’s C1 category, Canada’s Wilson Ross of Sherwood Park, AB excelled in his career first World Cup race, posting the third fastest time of the group. Jaye Milley of Calgary, AB, a previous World Cup and World Championships medallist, finished eighth.

In the tricycle category, the two Canadian athletes – Marie-Eve Croteau of Québec, QC (T2) and reigning World Champion Shelley Gautier of Toronto, ON (T1) – went on to step on the podium their respective time trial races, with Gautier taking the top spot. With the results, both athletes secured the highly coveted white jersey, awarded to the World Cup champion.

The men’s tandem of Daniel Chalifour and pilot Alexandre Cloutier finished fourth, less than five seconds off the podium.

The road races will take place Saturday and Sunday.

AVRIANA HEBERT AND ALEX TOUGAS WINS GOLD, W1 PLATES AT BMX WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Two Canadian riders will be forces to reckon with in just a few years

(Ottawa, ON – July 25, 2014) Cycling Canada would like to congratulate Canadian BMXers Avriana Hebert (Girls 14) and Alex Tougas (Boys 16), who won gold medals and W1 plates at the 2014 UCI BMX World Championships in Rotterdam, the Netherlands in the challenge classes.

Coach Ken Cools was thrilled with both performances: “Avriana Hebert was in a league of her own at this event. She was not challenged by any girl, on any lap. In her main event, she won from wire to wire and has become the new queen of the 14 year old girls class. Her athleticism and hard work will make her a force to reckon with for years to come as her potential has not even been tapped yet.”

Added Cools of Tougas back-to-back wins: “Alex Tougas dominated his class and repeated his success of last year with a back to back World Championships title, something that does not happen very often in the older categories. After a second place finish in his first qualifying round, Alex settled in and found his stride and did not drop another lap for the rest of the night, proving to everyone that he is hands down, the fastest challenge rider in the world!”

The junior and elite categories will be presented Saturday and Sunday.
