CAYLEY BROOKS AND LÉANDRE BOUCHARD TOP CANADIANS AT U23 MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP

2013 Mountain Bike World Cup Tour continues in Czech Republic

(Nove Mesto na Morave, CZE – May 25, 2013) Mountain bikers Cayley Brooks and Léandre Bouchard were the top Canadians today as the 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup tour resumed, both finishing in 27th of the U23 races in the Czech Republic.

Brooks posted a time of 1:27:09 in the second women’s U23 race of the 2013 World Cup tour, while Bouchard realized a time 1:22:01 in the men’s competition.

In the women’s U23 race, Andréanne Lanthier-Nadeau,finished 31st. Haley Smith, which had a good result last weekend as the World Cup season opened, did not finish today’s contest.

Jeremy Martin took the 28th position of the men’s U23 race, right behind Bouchard. Mitch Bailey posted the 38th fastest time.

In the overall World Cup rankings, Smith remains the top Canadian thanks to her performance last weekend, sitting in 20th place overall. Cayley Brooks sits in 25th place, while Lanthier-Nadeau is in 30th position.

In the junior men race, Canada’s lone rider, Marc-André Fortier, raced to the 35th place.

The second stop of the 2013 tour continues tomorrow with the presentation of both men and women elite races.

TALENT IDENTIFICATION EVENT DESCENDS ON VICTORIA MAY 26

Canadian Sport Institute Pacific is pleased to bring its new talent identification camp – PODIUM SEARCH – to Victoria on May 26. 

PODIUM SEARCH, a free, one-day talent identification camp, is for athletes aged 14-22 to test themselves and see if they have what it takes to accept the challenge to become part of Canada’s sporting elite.

Athletes who participate in PODIUM SEARCH will be evaluated for possible selection for Canadian Sport Institute Pacific’s Talent Development Programs (TDPs), including the Canadian Sport School, and the new Cycling Endurance Talent Development program – based on their test scores during the talent identification camp.  The TDPs are designed to propel athletes from their developmental stages to the Olympic podium.

All of the athletes who participate in Victoria’s upcoming PODIUM SEARCH will experience a number of different testing protocols that are similar to those used by athletes on Canada’s national teams.  Each participant will walk away with a copy of their test scores and a good understanding of what it takes to become part of Canada’s sporting elite.

In addition to being tested by world-class sport performance experts, athletes will hear the event’s keynote speaker and London 2012 Olympic silver medallist in rowing, Jeremiah Brown.

ANNIE EWART, CHARLES MOREAU AND MISHA PARTRIDGE RECEIVE 2013 “FACE” PROGRAM GRANT

Ewart, Moreau and Partridge along with their coaches, receive $8,000 to help fuel their sport dreams

Ottawa, ON (May 23, 2013) Cycling Canada is excited to announce that three of its athletes and coaches – Annie Ewart/Houshang Amiri, Charles Moreau/Sébastien Travers and Misha Partridge/Ken Cools are the recipients of a Petro-Canada Fuelling Athletes and Coaching Excellence (FACE) recipients.

Petro-Canada, a Suncor Energy business, will award 50 athlete and coach pairings with $8,000 to help fuel their sport dreams. 

The FACE program has provided more than 2,400 Canadian athletes and coaches with over $8 million in direct financial support. The 2013 recipients include pairings from six provinces and represent both winter and summer athletes and teams.

“Congratulations to Annie, Charles and Misha, and to their respective coaches Houshang Amiri, Sébastien Travers and Ken Cools for their accomplishments. These athletes are the future of our sport and so we are thrilled that they can benefit from the generosity of Petro-Canada’s FACE program so they can continue investing in their high performance cycling futures,” said Jacques Landry, High Performance Director and Head Coach of the Canadian Cycling teams.

Working together with the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) and their National Sport partners, the FACE program, provides developing, pre-carded, Canadian athlete and coach pairings with $8,000 in grants. These resources help athletes achieve national carded status and coaches improve their skills over the long term.

“We would like to congratulate each of the 2013 FACE recipients,” said Steven Keith, Director, Loyalty and Marketing Partnerships, Suncor Energy. “For the past 25 years we have been fortunate to support athletes and coaches by providing funding so they can focus on achieving their dreams.”

In the past, the FACE program has provided financial grants to Canada’s top athletes including 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games medalists: Alexandre Bilodeau, Hayley Wickenheiser, Kaillie Humphries, John Morris, Kristina Groves, Mike Robertson, Jim Armstrong and Ina Forest. Other notable FACE recipients include Mark Tewksbury, Canada’s Chef de Mission at the 2012 London Games, Marianne Limpert, silver medalist at the 1996 Olympic Games and Annie Pelletier, bronze medalist at the 1996 Olympic Games.

Cycling Canada is looking for candidates to fill its High Performance Sport Team Selection Advisory Group positions for the cycling sports of Para-cycling, Road, Track, Mountain Bike and BMX.

Cycling Canada is looking for persons with adequate knowledge in either of those five cycling sports, and that are ready to commit to a two-year term as a Sport Team Selection Advisory Group member.

Any person interested in being part of Cycling Canada’s High Performance structure may submit its candidacy to general@cyclingcanada.ca by no later than June 7th

BATTY SIXTH TO OPEN 2013 UCI MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP TOUR

Reigning World Cup Champion Catharine Pendrel takes 12th

(Albstad, GER – May 19, 2013) Canadian Mountain Biker Emily Batty of Brooklin, ON, racing for team Trek Factory, was the top Canadian at the opening cross-country race of the 2013 season on Sunday in Abstadt, Germany, finishing sixth.

Batty, who is racing in her second season in the Elite category, crossed the finish line with a time 1:35:31, showing a time deficit of 1:35 over Eva Lechner of Italy, who won this opening World Cup race.

“The conditions were really tough out there today. It was hard on the athletes and their equipment. Emily was really strong today. Despite needing a wheel change in the middle of the race. She was very close to making the podium. It’s great to see that her early season form is good, said Dan Proulx, Head Coach of the Canadian Mountain Bike Team. “This was the first real test for the athletes in 2013. Emily will work with her coach, Adam Morka, to identify strengths and weaknesses from this race. It was a good chance to see where things are at.”

2012 UCI World Cup Champion Catharine Pendrel of Kamloops, BC, racing for Team Luna Pro, finished 12th. Mikaela Kofman of Toronto, ON and Amanda Sin of Collingwood, ON, both racing for the Canadian-based professional mountain bike team SCOTT-3RoxRacing came in 35th and 44th respectively.

In the Men Elite race, the two-time reigning Canadian Champion Max Plaxton of Victoria, BC, racing with his professional team Sho-Air Cannondale, took the seventh spot of the race, trailing the winner Daniel McConnel of Australia by 1:06. Geoff Kabush of Courtenay, BC racing for team SCOTT-3RoxRacing opened his season by taking the 15th position of the race.

Added Proulx: “Max has already returned to the form he had prior to his knee injury last season. He was really strong today. He kept advancing through the field on every climb. He made some smart tactical decisions out there. Max had a very strong winter of training back in Victoria and it’s nice to see him get confirmation that all the hard work and consistency has paid off.”

On Saturday were held the U23 races. Hailey Smith was the top Canadian performer with a 16th place. Cayley Brooks took the 20th rank, while Andreane Lanthier Nadeau finished in 24th position.

In the men’s U23 race, Mitchell Baily finished 36th as the best Canadian result. Reigning Canadian U23 Champion Léandre Bouchard was 45th and Jérémy Martin took the 49th rank.

The team will now remain in Europe and travel to the Czech Republic as they compete in the second event of the UCI World Cup tour in Nove Mesto next weekend.

RAPHAEL GAGNÉ TAKES FOURTH SPOT AT OPENING WORLD CUP RACE OF 2013

Gagné starts the season on a high note, making his way to the Big Finals

(Albstad, GER – May 17, 2013) Canadian Mountain Biker Raphaël Gagné took the fourth spot of the Eliminator race at the opening event of the 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Tour presented by Shimano, in Albstad, Germany.

“I’m glad I qualified. I didn’t what to expect. Making it to the final is super positive, even though I’m a little disappointed with how it turned out at the end of the final,” said Gagné after his final race.

“In some ways I was used to the format because I used to compete in swimming where there is a heats and finals format. I think that experience came in handy today. Part of the success was team support and I share that success with everyone. I’d like to thank my sponsors Rocky Mountain, Oakley and Cascades for their support. I’m looking forward to the World Cup XC on Sunday and the Czech World Cup next week.”

“Raphael had a superb race today. He easily controlled each round of the Eliminator, doing only what it took to move onto the next round. We were pretty certain that Raphael was capable of the win. Unfortunately all of the riders were pushing the limits of control. In the final turn, Raphael was taken out by another rider,” said Dan Proulx, Head Coach of the Canadian Mountain Bike Team.

“Mountain Biking is becoming faster, more tactical and more spectacular. We felt that it was important for the entire team to take on this challenge. Our riders learned a lot today. This is one of the best ways to gain experience quickly. It will pay off in the future for our team.”

This fourth place marks the top Canadian performance in an Eliminator race at the World Cup level. The Eliminator race in its second season as a World Cup event.

Austrian Daniel Federspiel won the race of this first race of the season, while Thomas Litscher of Switzerland and Miha Halzer of Slovenia took second and third place respectively.

In the women’s race, Andréane Lanthier-Nadeau was the top Canadian, finishing in 12th position.

“I was really impressed with the field of racers I was up against. After I qualified into the heats, I just had to forget that I was competing against the Elite Women, said Lanthier-Nadeau, in her second year as a U23 rider. “In the Quarter-Final, after a really good start, I clipped out mid-way down the first straight-away. I still tried to get back into the Top 2 but there was a lot of aggressive riding and contact so I ended up third in this round. I finished 12th overall at the end of the day. I’m really happy that we did the Eliminator as a team. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s race and hope to stay clipped in!”

The cross country races are held tomorrow for the U23 categories and Sunday for the Elite categories.

2013 UCI JUNIOR PAN AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS CANADIAN SELECTIONS

Santo Domingo hosts 2013 UCI Junior Pan-American Championships

(Ottawa, ON – May 16, 2013) After the successful Junior Trials held in Los Angeles, California this last April, Cycling Canada is pleased to announce the riders selected for the 2013 UCI Junior Pan American Track Championships, scheduled for July 15-21 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Cycling Canada believes these athletes will have tremendous success at this competition as they have exceeded expectations at the trials.

MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP STARTS THIS WEEKEND IN GERMANY

Albstad, Germany hosts opening races of new Olympic cycle

(Ottawa, ON – May 15, 2013) The 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Tour presented by Shimano starts this weekend in Albstad, Germany, and Canada will have a team of seven athletes competing in the cross-country and eliminator races.

The Canadian team, directed by Canada’s Mountain Bike Program Head Coach Dan Proulx, is mostly comprised of U23 Men and Women cyclists, with the reigning Canada Cup Champion Raphaël Gagné racing in the Elite Men race.

Other Canadians are expected to participate in the races this weekend, representing their professional teams, such as Olympians Catharine Pendrel (Luna Pro Team), Emily Batty (Trek Factory Racing), Max Plaxton (Sho-Air Cannondale) and Geoff Kabush (Scott-3RoxRacing).

Racing beings on Friday evening with the eliminator races, continues Saturday with the U23 cross-country races and ends Sunday with the Elite races.

CANADA CUP SERIES FEATURE CROSS-COUNTRY AND DOWNHILL RACES THROUGHOUT SUMMER

Canada Cup series are top transitioning cycling events for the champions of tomorrow

(Ottawa, ON – May 14, 2013) The 2013 MTB Canada Cup Cycling Series is back for another summer, with exciting cross-country and downhill mountain bike races to be disputed in three different provinces, starting this weekend.

The mountain bike series, in its 22nd edition, will feature four cross-country and three downhill races in 2013, hosted in three provinces throughout the summer, travelling to Québec, Ontario and British Columbia, with the finals hosted in Whistler BC.

2011 World Champion Catharine Pendrel labels the Canada Cup series as critical to her international success: “The Canada Cup was a critical stepping stone in my development.  The courses were challenging technically and physically, and by racing Canada Cup races, I met the racers that pushed and inspired me to improve. Learning to race for the win on World class course at home allowed me to transition to success at the international level.

Geoff Kabush, who was Canada’s top mountain biker at the 2012 Olympic Games and posted the country’s top result in its history at the Olympic Games, also credits the Canada Cup in his international success: “The Canada Cup was definitely a major stepping stone in my career. The Canada Cups refined my skills, taught me valuable racing lessons, and gave me the confidence I needed to progress to the World Cup. I still remember the accomplishment I felt in 1997 when I won my first Canada Cup in Bromont.”

In 2012, Raphael Gagné took the Elite title in men’s cross-country, while Sandra Walter took the overall title in the women’s elite cross-country category.  Mark Wallace won the overall Downhill series of the Men Elite category, while Danielle Uyesugi was proclaimed the Women Elite Downhill champion.

Former Champions of the cross-country Canada Cup Series include Olympic medallist Marie-Hélène Prémont, Olympian Emily Batty, and current national team members, Sandra Walter, Raphael Gagné, Derek Zandstra, Mikaela Kofman and Jean Ann Berkenpas (McKirdy).

The Canada Cup series is designed to provide competitive opportunities to the next generation of cyclists, transitioning from provincial race series to international competitions.

Hosted in partnership between Cycling Canada, its provincial sport organizations and local organizing committee, the Canada Cup Cycling Series is sanctioned by the International Cycling Union.

CYCLING CANADA, CYCLING BC AND CANADIAN SPORT INSTITUTE PACIFIC JOIN FORCES IN NEW HIGH PERFORMANCE ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

A new partnership between Cycling Canada, Cycling BC and the Canadian Sport Institute Pacific has resulted in the creation of the Cycling Talent Development Program which will begin operating on October 1, 2013, based in Victoria, BC. The partners are taking integration to the next level by developing this program directly in line with Cycling Canada’s High Performance Athlete Development Pathway. The Cycling Talent Development Program is committed to supporting the identification and development of Canadian athletes who have the qualities required to be Olympic/Paralympic champions.

“Cycling Canada is proud to partner with Cycling BC and Canadian Sport Institute Pacific in offering this talent development opportunity to up and coming Canadian cyclists,” explains Jacques Landry, High Performance Director and Head Coach of Cycling Canada. “Through the guidance of our head mountain bike coach and soon to be appointed Talent Development Coach, this Talent Development Program is built on the premise of creating an optimal daily training environment. This environment will greatly enhance the development of our Canadian cycling youth who will in turn become part of the success of Cycling Canada as we aim at being one of the top cycling nations by 2020.”

With the financial support of Own the Podium (OTP), Sport Canada, and the Province of BC, the partners will recruit and hire a Cycling Talent Development Program Coach – who will be a full-time employee of the Canadian Sport Institute Pacific. The Cycling Talent Development Coach will join the existing team of five Canadian Sport Institute Pacific Talent Development Coaches in the sports of rowing and swimming in Victoria, plus freestyle mogul skiing and luge in Whistler.  A career posting for the Cycling Talent Development Coach is available online at csipacific.ca, and also can be seen as an attachment to this release.

The focus of the programs will be to identify, target and develop athletes with Olympic/Paralympic podium potential. The program will provide athletes with the guidance, coaching and sport science support required to advance their athletic careers as they transition through the Train to Compete stage of Cycling Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development model (see https://cyclingcanada.ca/development-programs/cycling-ltads/ for more details on Cycling Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development model). The athlete selection process for the Cycling Talent Development Program will be announced in June, 2013.
