CORY WALLACE DEFENDS MARATHON TITLE, SANDRA WALTER TAKES TOP HONOURS IN WOMEN’S RACE

Wallace races to back-to-back Canadian Cross-Country Marathon title

(Squamish, BC – August 18, 2014) Cory Wallace of Jasper, AB (Kona Factory) successfully defended his title at the 2014 Canadian Mountain Bike Marathon Championships on Saturday, finishing first the gruelling 60km cross-country course in Squamish, British Columbia.

Wallace, a cross-country long distance specialist, crossed the finish line after 3:39:55 of racing on the challenging trails of Squamish, BC. He was followed by Kris Sneddon of Sechelt, BC (Kona Factory) in second place and Geoff Kabush of Courtenay, BC (Scott-3Rox Racing) in third place.

Wallace was the only Canadian who made the journey to South Africa to compete in the 2014 UCI XCM World Championships where he finished in 20th place.

The Championships course featured some of the same trails as the regular JABR presented by Pearson Financial Services LTD, with a couple of extensions.

Sandra Walter (Coquitlam, BC/LIV Giant) won the ultimate honours of the women’s race, riding on her local trails of British Columbia. With the victory, Walter took home her career first Red and White jersey. Walter accomplished the feat by completing the course in 4:20:26 with a comfortable lead of almost 14 minutes on her closest rival, Amanda Sin of Collingwood, ON (Scott-3Rox Racing). Jean-Ann Berkenpas of Valemount, BC (Xprezo-Borsao) finished third.

JABR is part of the Test of Metal Group of Events which consists of the Orecrusher, Test of Metal, GearJammer and Just Another Bike Race.

CANADIAN XCO CHAMPION REGISTERED FOR 2014 CANADIAN MOUNTAIN BIKE MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS

Geoff Kabush is attempting to win his second Canadian Mountain Bike title of the season at the Marathon Championships

(Squamish, BC – August 15, 2014) The 2014 Canadian Mountain Bike Marathon Championships will take to the trails of Squamish (BC) tomorrow, August 16, with some of the best cross-country mountain bikers battling it out for long-distance supremacy.

The Championships course will feature the same trails as the regular JABR presented by Pearson Financial Services LTD, but with a couple of extensions added on to total over 60 kilometers of racing.

Notably, the 2014 Canadian Cross-Country Champion Geoff Kabush (Courtenay, BC/SCOTT 3Rox Racing) will attempt to add a Marathon title to his long list of titles, won in both cross-country and cyclo-cross.

The men’s title was won in 2013 by Cory Wallace (Victoria, BC/Kona Factory). Wallace finished as the top Canadian in 20th place of the UCI XCM World Championships earlier in June. Wallace will be present to defend his title.

Other elite cross-country riders are expected to provide stiff competition, such as Evan McNeely (Kingston, ON/Norco Factory), Evan Guthrie (Peachland, BC/Norco Factory) and Andrew L’Esperance (Halifax, NS/Norco Factory).

In the women’s race, Sandra Walter (Coquitlam, BC/LIV Giant) and Cindy Montambault (Val David, QC/CVM 2 Vals) are headlining the women’s crew registered for the race. The reigning champion, Kaarin Tae of Nova Scotia, will not be defending her title as she rehabilitating from an ankle injury.

CYCLING CANADA CONSULTATION INTO DOPING

LAST CALL – Independent consultation into doping practices in the sport in Canada concluding interview stage

Cycling Canada (CC) has been advised by the independent consultant carrying out the interviews and final report in the consultation that they will conclude the interview stage of the process on August 29, 2014.

The goal of this consultation has been to engage members of the cycling community in a discussion around their experiences, personal knowledge and perceptions with respect to the issue of doping in the sport of cycling in Canada.

Potential participants are reminded that their participation will be fully anonymous with the independent consultant who cannot provide personal information to either Cycling Canada or the CCES.  The intent of the consultation is to report on findings and make recommendations to improve the anti-doping program of Cycling Canada.

If you have useful information it would be helpful to our sport if you would give serious consideration to participating in the consultation before the interview phase concludes.

Notice of Change – Milton to host Cycling Canada AGM

The 2014 Annual Meeting of Cycling Canada will be held October 24th to 26th in Milton, Ontario at the Best Western Milton Inn.  This change has been made to allow participants to see the Milton Velodrome which is currently under construction and scheduled to host a  Toronto 2015 Test Event and the 2014 Canadian Track Championships – on that same weekend.

For your further information, the 2015 Annual Congress will be held in St. John’s, Newfoundland from October 30th to November 1st.   The Sheraton Hotel in St. John’s has kindly allowed us to move the meeting one year later which is much appreciated.

More information on the schedule for the 2014 Annual Meeting will be distributed in the near future.

Summary of the Meeting Between ABA and Cycling Canada

Representatives of the American Bicycle Association (ABA), the parent organization of USA BMX and BMX Canada, and Cycling Canada met in Ottawa on July 23rd to discuss the potential for collaboration around the growth and development of BMX Cycling in Canada.

On behalf of the ABA, John David (Chief Operating Officer) and Brad Hallin (Senior Track Director) made the trip to Ottawa to share their perspectives on the many exciting developments they have seen within the sport and how their organization endeavors to support its progress.  From the Cycling Canada perspective; Greg Mathieu (CEO), Mathieu Boucher (Performance Development Director) and Jim Crosscombe (OCA CEO / Chair Interprovincial Council).provided the overview of the national BMX landscape and the factors affecting its current health and future potential. 

Both parties are highly desirous of solving the issues that have been seen to hold back Canada’s BMX potential and realize that a better understanding of the roles of all the stakeholders is fundamental to this goal.

Perspectives were shared on the fundamental areas of events, track operations and membership with an enhanced understanding of how each party views their approaches.  There are areas where  there appears to be common ground and other aspects that will need further study to find the way forward.

Greg Mathieu was pleased with the tone and substance of the meeting and noted; “In the end, we want to create the best development and competition system for our stakeholders.  The history and success of the ABA can advise us and we look forward to further exchanges with them towards a more unified Canadian BMX community.”

Speaking for the ABA, John David said; “We were extremely pleased with the cooperative tone of the meeting and have great hope that we are collectively creating unity for BMX in Canada and across North America”.

The two organizations have agreed to share information that will assist each in moving the process forward and to continue communication with the intent of building a proposal to share with stakeholders by the end of October of this year.

5 Canadians in Korea for junior track worlds

Five Canadians are in action this weekend at the UCI Junior Track World Championships in Gwang Myeong, Korea.

Canada is focussing on the men’s endurance events at this year’s junior worlds, so the riders will be competing in the team pursuit, omnium, scratch race and points race.

As announced in June, the team is composed of the following riders:

  • Evan Burtnik (17, Edmonton, AB)
  • Connor Byway (16, Ottawa, ON)
  • Bayley Simpson (16, Lindsay, ON)
  • Adam Jamieson (18, Barrie, ON)
  • Alexander Cowan (17, Calgary, AB)

The final decision on who will ride which event will be made by the coach on site.

Canadian Paralympic Committee Celebrates One Year to Go to the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games

 OTTAWA, Ont., Aug. 7, 2014 – With today marking one year to go to the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games, the Canadian Paralympic Committee celebrates the spotlight shining on athlete hopefuls training for Toronto.

 “Are You Ready?” asks the Toronto2015 Parapan video released this morning, featuring the intense training of three Canadian Parapan Am hopefuls: swimmer Danielle Kisser, cyclist Jaye Milley and wheelchair basketball player David Eng. The “sizzle reel” features the athletes practicing their skills in edgy, innovative ways and aims to leave viewers thinking differently about how they define sport.

“Are we ready? Yes we are,” said Team Canada Chef de Mission Elisabeth Walker-Young. “In the life of a high performance athlete, one year is a drop in the bucket. Danielle, Jaye and David are great examples of the athleticism and character of our Parapan Am athletes and we wish them and all Toronto 2015 hopefuls the best in their final year of preparation for the Games.”

  • Jaye Milley (Calgary, Alta.) Age 23, Milley is a quadruple amputee cyclist who says, “Can’t is not a word in my vocabulary.” A World Cup medallist, Milley competed at the 2011 Guadalajara Parapan American Games and the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
  • David Eng (Montreal, Que.) Age 39, Eng is bilingual and a veteran wheelchair basketball player who has won medals at three Paralympic and two Parapan American Games, including gold at the London 2012 Paralympic Games and bronze at the 2011 Guadalajara Parapan American Games. (Montreal, Que.) 
  • Danielle Kisser (Delta, B.C.) (Delta, B.C.) Age 17, Kisser raced in eight swimming events at the 2011 Guadalajara Parapan American Games, winning bronze in the 100-metre breaststroke. Kisser was born with achondroplasia (a common form of dwarfism).

“The Parapan Am Games is a world-class competition and the Toronto 2015 Games will feature the best athletes from the Americas and the Caribbean,” added Walker-Young. “The Games offer a chance to showcase the incredible athletic ability of athletes and to challenge people’s attitudes toward sport.

“The Parapan Ams mark an important stepping stone towards the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Spectators will get to witness the best of the best competing on home turf.”

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR 2014 CANADA CUP MOUNTAIN BIKE FINALS

Finals to be held during Crankworx Whistler, Aug 15 and 17

The Canada Cup series will again take to the Whistler trails this year, wrapping up its 2014 season with the Canadian Open XC during the Crankworx mountain bike festival. Competitors will plough through a fast and challenging course, racing for coveted points that will ultimately crown the 2014 Canada Cup Series Champions.

Straight down, no mercy – the Canadian Open DH course is a ripper, a one-run takedown of Whistler’s rooty single-track, steep rock drops and big air features. This technical test-piece calls for blazing guns and laser focus from those who dare to drop in.

This race is sanctioned by both the UCI and Cycling Canada.

The Canadian Open is open to riders with a single event license and riders with a UCI International Racing License. For unlicensed riders, the cost of the single event license is included in the entry fee.

Only Elite and Junior Expert UCI license holder will be eligible for UCI points.

Marathon Championships to take place in Squamish the day after Canada Cup MTB XC Finals

The 2014 Canadian Mountain Bike Marathon Championships will take to the trails of Squamish, with some of the best cross-country mountain bikers battling it out for long-distance supremacy.

The Championships course will feature the same trails as the regular JABR presented by Pearson Financial Services LTD, but with a couple of extensions added on to total over 60 kilometers of racing.

These Marathon Championships will be presented on Aug 16, 2014, the day following the 2014 Canada Cup MTB XCO Finals. The event is a great opportunity for cross-country mountain bikers to participate in two high-level races on the same weekend in the same area.
