2014 MOUNTAIN BIKE CANADA CUP SERIES TO FEATURE INTENSE COMPETITON

Rugged and demanding off-road racing in Canada’s premier MTB series.

(Ottawa, ON – April 29, 2014) The 2014 Canada Cup – Canada’s premier Mountain Bike series – will see Canada’s best cross-country and downhill riders competing for the prestigious title of Canada Cup Champion.

The series has been the foundation of Canada’s mountain bike development system throughout its twenty-year history. Countless Olympic and World Championship team members have advanced through its ranks – competing on rugged and challenging courses throughout Canada. This year’s series consists of four cross-country and three downhill events.

In cross-country, Antoine Caron (Stoneham, QC/Specialized Racing) will look to defend his Canada Cup title from 2013. Caron came out on top after an intense battle with Evan Guthrie (Peachland, BC/Norco Factory Team) and Evan McNeely (Kingston, ON/Norco Factory Team) that was decided in the very last race of the season. Sandra Walter (Coquitlam, BC/Liv/giant Canada), who showed consistency and power in racing to a comfortable lead and capturing her first Canada Cup title last year, will once again be looking to finish the season on top of the standings.

In downhill, Kyle Sangers (Kingston, ON) was the 2013 series winner in the Elite Men’s category, while Miranda Miller (Garibaldi Highlands, BC) came out on top in the Elite Women’s field. Both riders will be looking to defend their Canada Cup series titles in 2014.

New in 2014 is the introduction of the UCI Junior Series- XCO. Canada will host two events as part of the international series, the junior races at the Canada Cup in Mont-Tremblant and Whistler.

“The Canada Cup showcases Canada’s top mountain bikers. Every race counts and is critical to the final standings. The riders really have to be on at every event if they hope to win. It’s a fun and exciting series for everyone. It definitely highlights Canada’s emerging talent and strength in the off-road disciplines.” said Nicholas Vipond, the series coordinator at Cycling Canada. “We have incredible organizing committees and sponsors who deliver world class events at each venue. Each organizer is professional and committed to creating a high quality experience for the riders. They continue to improve the series each year – refining and progressing the courses and ramping up the atmosphere so that everyone has an incredible time at these races.”

The series will start with a cross-country and downhill race at the very popular Mont-Tremblant event on May 17-18. The event in Mont-Tremblant is celebrating its 20th edition this season, and welcomes over 1000 cyclists of all ages to its races. American mountain biker Stephen Ettinger (BMC MTB Racing) was the 2013 winner of the Elite Men cross-country race. Sandra Walter opened the season with the victory in Mont-Tremblant last year.

The cross-country riders will then make their way to Baie-Saint-Paul, near Québec City, to compete at the second cross-country race of the season on May 24. Baie-Saint-Paul is also a classic event of the Canada Cup Calendar, having hosted races for the last 16 years. In 2013, Both Ettigner and Walter were the winners of the race, sweeping the Quebec leg of the Canada Cup series.

The downhillers will travel out west to Panorama, British Columbia for the second race of the downhill series on July 6. Panorama has hosted the Canadian Mountain Bike Downhill Championships many times and continues to attract the top riders in the country who look forward to intense racing in one of Canada’s most scenic venues.

The cross-country series will continue in Eastern Canada with another heart-pounding race on July 13 in Sudbury, ON –- the week before the 2014 Canadian MTB XCO Championships. The race is organized by Pulse Racing who has organized top-level mountain bike races since 1996. Derek Zandstra (Kingston, ON/Scott-3 Rox Racing) came out victorious in his first Canada Cup race of 2013 at the Sudbury event, while Sandra Walter secured the Elite Women’s category title with a third consecutive victory last year.

The Canada Cup series will come to a close for both cross-country and downhill racers at the Crankworx Whistler mountain bike festival in August. In 2013, Crankworx Whistler added both the downhill and cross-country Canada Cup Finals to its renowned event. The races drew big crowds and all the big names of the Canadian Mountain Bike scene made the trek to British Columbia.  2014 is expected to attract even more top riders – all attempting to lock in points for the overall series title and to come home with a win in front of the wildly supportive MTB fans in Whistler. Whistler will also be host of the UCI Junior Series for the cross-country junior race.

NYHAUG ON THE BOX AT BMX SUPERCROSS WORLD CUP, TAKES THIRD PLACE

Nyhaug races to podium in opening World Cup race of 2014

(Manchester, GBR – April 19, 2014) Canadian BMXer Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam, BC raced to the third place of the opening BMX Supercross World Cup race of 2014, his career third podium  performance.

“I felt good and fast today. It was one of those days where it didn’t come in easy and I had to work for everything. I am pretty happy to start the World Cup season on the podium, and we’ll be ready for the next one,” said Nyhaug, who earned on Saturday his career third Supercross podium. “The prep has gone really well for this race, so I’ll keep doing more of the same for the next race. I have a few weeks off, which will be nice because I have been racing lots this spring.”

Nyhaug, who finished fifth in yesterday’s time trials race, opened up the day with a second place in the motos, and third place of the quarterfinals. In the semi-finals, Nyhaug qualified for the Main Event with the third place.

Reigning World Champion and local superstar Liam Phillips of Great Britain took the victory of this race, edging Anthony Dean of Australia and Nyhaug at the finish line.

James Palmer of North Vancouver, BC finished seventh of his quarter final heat, and ranked 25th overall.

“I am very excited for the 2014 season. The riders showed some great poise, and the quality of the riders in this event was top notch. Today had to be one of the hardest race in BMX, and James Palmer came away to the quarterfinals and Tory Nyhaug taking the third place,” said Ken Cools, head coach of the Canadian BMX team. “The team worked well, we had a couple of ups and downs, with Jimmy and Corey both going down with hopefully minor injuries. The team culture is at an all-time high, and we are working great together right now. Double Tap.”

Corey Walsh, who injured himself yesterday during the qualifying motos, is looking forward to the next race: “I am doing good… a little banged up and bruised my hips and hit my head. I’ll be ready for the next World Cup race in Papendal. I’ll try to ride more and get more track time leading up to the next race and make sure everything is dialed in.”

The next UCI BMX Supercross World Cup is slated for May 11, in Papendal, the Netherlands

2014 BMX SUPERCROSS SEASON KICKS OFF IN MANCHESTER

Canadian riders looking to score podium performances and international ranking points

(Ottawa, ON – April 14, 2014) Four Canadian elite BMXers are travelling to Manchester this week for the opening Supercross event of the season. The two-day competition starts on Friday April 18 with the Time Trials and ends on Saturday April 19 with the featured BMX motos and main events.

Canada will have four riders wearing the National Team uniform at the event, including five-time Canadian Champion and Olympian Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam, BC. He will be joined by ‎Jimmy Brown of Airdrie AB, who is coming back from a 10-month rest period as a result of an injury, Corey Walsh of Ayr, ON and James Palmer of North Vancouver, who took the second place in the elite category of the Canadian BMX Championships in 2013.

All four riders have participated in UCI BMX Supercross events in previous years.

“I’m excited to open the World Cup season next weekend in Manchester. I’ve been racing a lot this year and I’m ready to go. I’ve raced 2 races on SX tracks so far this year and they have gone well,” said Nyhaug, who is ranked sixth in the World rankings of SuperCross and represented Canada at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. “I know that I’m in great race shape right now and I’m confident in myself. As always the goal is to race consistent and be in the final and once there, go for the win.

For the season, Nyhaug is looking for consistency. “I’m looking to have fun racing the whole SX World Cup circuit again. Racing consistent every weekend is going to be key in the chase for the title, and that’s my goal.”

Jimmy Brown shares Nyhaug’s feelings on getting back on the Supercross track: “I am feeling confident getting back on the SX tracks after recovering from last year’s shoulder injury. I have put in a lot of hard work in the off season and I am feeling better than ever and ready to do my country proud on a world stage. I am feeling more prepared than I ever have for a World Cup event and I have some big goals, so hopefully all goes well and I can come home with a big result.”

Ken Cools, Head Coach of the Canadian BMX Team, is excited about the start of the new Supercross season: “Olympic qualification will begin this year and racing in Manchester will give an opportunity to dial in racing on SX tracks and better prepare athletes for the upcoming races that offer points.”

Five riders will spend the next three weeks at Cycling Canada’s base in Tielt-Winge, Belgium, competing in a series of national-level events.

The team is made up of athletes selected to the men’s track endurance program through a series of training camps over the winter. “Racing in Belgium is ideal for this profile of athlete,” said men’s road development coach Luc Arseneau, who is managing this project. “We already know these guys all have big motors. Now we need to challenge them with some fast-paced events that will also hone their technical and tactical abilities.”

CANADIAN ATHLETES:

  • Aidan CAVES (19, Vancouver, BC)
  • William ELLIOTT (19, Barrie, ON)
  • Eric JOHNSTONE (19, Calgary, AB)
  • Sean MACKINNON (18, Hamilton, ON)

TORONTO 2015 SEEKING VOLUNTEERS

Celebrate Your Home Games

TORONTO 2015 volunteer program, presented by Chevrolet

Competition against other nations at a “home Games” can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for athletes. It is emotional and unforgettable.

The TORONTO 2015 Games will also provide a once-in-a-lifetime home Games opportunity for volunteers from across the Greater Golden Horseshoe region.

All volunteers who put on the TORONTO 2015 uniform will be front-line hosts and ambassadors.  They will embody the community pride, diversity and enthusiasm that define the Games.  They will gain valuable skills training, and will help ensure visitors and athletes from around the Americas sing the praises of our region, long after the Games are over.

Volunteers are needed for each of the 51 sports taking place during the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, in regions across Southern Ontario.  (Insert sport) will be a key component of the Games. TO2015, the TORONTO 2015 Games Organizing Committee, needs volunteers with knowledge and passion for their sport who are ready to give their time to see both the sport and Canada’s top athletes thrive on the world stage.

Volunteering matters; just consider the story of Maureen Richards. Maureen’s lifelong volunteer passion for her sports, basketball and wheelchair basketball, was sowed at the 1967 Pan Am Games, hosted in her home city of Winnipeg.  She repeated her volunteer experience at the 1999 Games, also held in Winnipeg. With her involvement in the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, Maureen will have had the unique distinction of being a volunteer at every Pan Am/Parapan Games that Canada has hosted.

Volunteer tasks could include preparing the field of play, recording quotes from athletes, taking tickets, transporting athletes to events, providing medical services, or even providing support behind the scenes at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

We hope yours will be among the many hands helping us deliver the largest international multi-sport event ever held in Canada.  These are your home Games. Seize the opportunity!
