MILLEY, MEN TANDEM FLAT OUT IN FINALE, MOLNAR TAKES SECOND PLACE

Canada ends 2013 UCI Para-cycling Championships with eight medals

(Baie-Comeau, QC – September 01, 2013) Canada added two medals to its tally as the 2013 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships came to an end on Sunday in Baie-Comeau, QC.

With the two medals won by the Canadian para-cyclist in today’s last race of the season, Canada ended these 2013 World Championships with eight medals: two gold, four silver and two bronze. Jaye Milley (C1), Marie-Claude Molnar (C4), Shelley Gautier (T2) and Marie-Ève Croteau (T2) all won medals in the time trial and road races.

On Sunday, Calgary’s Jaye Milley took the bronze medal in the men’s C1 race, finishing his season with flat tire with two kilometres left in the road race. At the moment of the unfortunate flat tire, Milley was well positioned to take away the rainbow jersey, but settled instead for third place, his second bronze medal of these World Championships.

In the last three kilometers of the race, Milley was among the leaders’ group, and had plenty of energy left for the finish. Significantly slowed down by the flat tire and its repair, Milley finished 1:56 behind the winning time of 1:31:12 set by Arnoud Nijhuis of the Netherlands.

“It is a bittersweet victory because I had a rear flat in the last two kilometres. I was positioned perfectly for the sprint and feeling absolutely amazing! I definitely had a chance at being the World Champion,” commented Milley. “The reality is as an athlete you try and control everything but the fact is there are things that are just simply out of your control, like my flat today. Just having the chance and knowing I could have made it happen is what is important!”

Brayden McDougall, also of Calgary, finished in 11th place of that same C1 race.

In the women C4 race, Marie-Claude Molnar of Sainte-Adele, QC rode away to the second place, finishing the race with the silver medal after 1:40:11 of racing – less than one minute behind the victorious time set by Megan Fisher of the United States.

Molnar, who is a regular on the podium at World Cup and World Championships alike, was pleased with the race: “The season officially ended with the presentation of this road race at World Championships in Baie-Comeau. The objective was clear for me today: hang on to the wheels of the C5 women, something I was able to do until the fourth lap. I then realized that the German and Polish girls had more power than me. I come to the finish in second place, with the feeling of accomplishment.”

Nicole Clermont of Sherbrooke, QC, participating in her first World Championships and has been racing internationally for less than three weeks, had yet another great race, taking the fourth place of the C5 race. Clermont came very close to the taking the bronze medal at these World Championships, involved in the final sprint against Greta Neimanas of the United States. The two women took 1:39:11 to complete the course, crossing the line just 24 seconds after the race winner.

In the Men’s tandem race, Canada once again were contenders for medals at the start line. The medal winning tandem comprised of Daniel Chalifour and pilot Alexandre Cloutier was assigned today to work for the second Canadian tandem, Alexandre Carrier and his new pilot Aroussen Laflame, jumping in a breakaway. The hope was to allow Carrier and Laflamme fresh sprint legs that would have been needed in the final sprint. But once again, lightning struck for the Canadian tandem, and the group suffered from a flat tire in the last two kilometers of the race, taking them out of contention for a podium. Carrier/Laflamme ended in 12th place after coming back from their flat, while the Chalifour/Cloutier tandem pulled out of the race after the break was caught.

Sebastien Bouchard finished 17th of the men’s C3 race, while Arnold Boldt did not finish his C2 race.

The event ended with the handcycling team relay race. Canada took the fifth rank.

STEVE SMITH POSTS FASTEST TIME ON THE EVE OF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS FINALS

Batty, Kabush posts best Canadian results in the Elite cross country races

(Pietermaritzburg, RSA, – August 31, 2013) Canadian downhiller and two-time World Championships medallist Steve Smith posted the fastest time of the downhill timed session at the 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa on Saturday.

Smith is enjoying a dream season, finishing in the Top 4 of each races he entered, and posting three Top3 results, including a victory on Canadian soil at Mont-Sainte-Anne. Smith has previously won silver and bronze medals at Mountain Bike World Championships.

Casey Brown posted the best time in the women timed session, with the seventh fastest time of the group, with Micayla Gatto posted the eighth fastest time.

In the Elite Women cross country race, the reigning Canadian Champion Emily Batty posted the best Canadian results finishing in 17thplace, despite battling sickness, a chest infection. “I’m still battling illness and a chest infection,” explained Batty in a conversation with CanadianCyclist.com. “I had great legs but was really held back by my lungs. You would think I’d be used to racing sick by now, as it’s been a constant uphill battle all year long. I’m not happy with today, but I just made the most of it.”

“We definitely had a challenging day out there. Our Elite women’s team had a tough lead up to Worlds with some injuries and sickness that hampered preparation, so we weren’t quite sure how it would go. On the men’s side it was simply a tough day where big time gaps formed early and there was simply no way to come back,” said Dan Proulx, Head coach of the Canadian Mountain Bike Team.

“On the positive side, I know all of our riders maintained their composure and did the best they could with what they had on the day. We’ll take the lessons learned here and continue to build our program toward 2016. The important thing is to keep everyone moving forward. We definitely have lots of talent and fire-power in our team.”

The 2011 World Champion Catharine Pendrel was among the leading group in the first lap, and crashed, which forced her to lose her momentum, out of contention. She would end her race soon after Batty, in 20th position.

Mikaela Kofman posted an excellent result in 23rd position for her rookie appearance in the elite group at World Championships, while Amanda Sin crossed the finish line just after Kofman, in 24th place. Both Sin and teammate Sandra Walter were involved in a crash early in the race.

“In the Women’s race, Mikaela Kofman had a breakthrough, finishing 23rd. That’s a great ride from one of our youngest elite riders. We expect to see Mikaela get closer to the front as she gains more World Cup experience,” commented Proulx.

Geoff Kabush finished his race in 25th place of the elite men category, the best result among the Canadian group in South Africa. Kabush was involved in a crash at the start of the race, and couldn’t close the large gap that resulted in the race.

“It was a battle out there the whole day,” said Kabush to CanadianCyclist.com.  “A really high speed course, really physical.  I came into it feeling I had a chance, fought as hard as I could, but 25th … not exactly excited about it.  I had a near death experience at the start, when a guy laid himself out flat in front of me, and I had to ride over a couple of other bodies and bikes.  Slotted in around 20th, but the speed was high just wasn’t able to move up.”

Derek Zandstra, which has had a stellar season winning the Canadian championships race, finished 33rd, followed by Raphael Gagné. Max Plaxton suffrered from flat in the first lap, and finished 39th.

Proulx added: “At these Worlds we’re definitely seeing some depth and a higher level of performance in our Junior and U23 riders. It’s really encouraging to see the program continue to develop and improve. We’re confident that we have a strong team of young guns that will insure Canada’s future success at the international level for many years to come. In a post-Olympic year, you really want to focus on these riders and take the pressure off the Olympians from last year. It’s nice to see the younger riders take advantage of this opportunity.”

Tomorrow will feature the cross-country eliminator, as well as the downhill finals.

ROCHETTE CRACKS TOP 10 IN U23 WOMEN RACE AT MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLDS

Vezina peaks at right time with seventh, Wallace ninth in Downhill Junior race

(Pietermaritzburg, RSA, – August 30, 2013) It was a solid day for Canada at the 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in South Africa, with two Canadian downhillers posting Top 10 results and Maghalie Rochette realizing an excellent race in the cross-country women’s espoirs category to also crack the Top 10.

The cross-country events continued on Friday after the junior races were held Thursday, a day when young Canadian cyclist Peter Disera delivered a hair-raising silver medal performance. As the momentum carried in the Espoirs (U23) cross-country race, Maghalie Rochette stormed her way to the ninth place of the women espoir race, posting the best Canadian result of the day.

Despite a slower start for Rochette crossing the first time split in 16th position, her determination and endurance abilities kicked in, and progressively made her way among the leaders, gaining positions at every split, every lap.

Frédérique Trudel, the reigning Espoirs Canadian Champion in the discipline, finished the race ranked 26th immediately followed by her Canadian teammates Laura Bietola and Andréane Lanthier-Nadeau in 27th and 28th place respectively.

Six Canadian cyclists rode the Men’s Espoirs race, with Antoine Caron posting the best Canadian result in 23rd place. The current Canada Games champion Léandre Bouchard followed Caron to the finish line in 24th place. Jeremy Martin finished 33rd, Mitch Baily took the 41st rank. Evan Guthrie and Evan McNeely were pulled after being lapped by the leader, and placed 48th and 56th.

VEZINA RAISES EYEBROWS IN THE JUNIOR MEN DOWNHILL RACE

Canadian downhiller McKay Vezina arrived in South Africa in fine form, and his results proved it on Friday. Posting the best Canadian time in Thursday’s timed session with the sixth best time of the day, Vezina continued to demonstrate today his ability and strength, finishing seventh in the finals, his career best international result.

Mark Wallace, who has been consistently at the top of standings all year long in his first complete international season, also posted a decent run today, taking the ninth place.

SHELLEY GAUTIER DEFENDS WORLD TITLE; CROTEAU SILVER AT PARA-CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Two Canadian women show poise in winning medals for Canada as Para-Cycling World Championships start in Baie-Comeau, QC

(Baie-Comeau, QC – August 29, 2013) Canada opened the 2013 Para-Cycling Road World Championships with two medals in this first day of time trials, with Shelley Gautier of Toronto, ON establishing herself as the World’s best T1 racer and Marie-Ève Croteau of Québec, QC taking the silver medal as she continues her come-back to racing after spending more than ten months off the bike following an injury.

Gautier earned the coveted rainbow jersey award to the World Champion in the T1 time trial race, completing the course with a time of 22:43. In doing so, Gautier successfully defended her title won last year at these same World Championships.

In the T2 time trial race, the reigning World Champion Marie-Ève Croteau finished second in the race, a solid result for her as she has been off her training plan following an injury that forced her to the sideline for over ten months as she recovered. Croteau tackled the difficult course and posted a time of 17:39 for the silver medal.

In the men’s H2 race, Charles Moreau of Trois-Rivières, QC posted his career best international result in his time trial with a sixth place, showing exceptional progress in his first year on the Canadian high performance team. Mark Beggs of Montreal, QC came in eleventh.

Louis-Albert Corriveau-Jolin of Ste-Claire, QC came seventh of the men’s T2 race.

Veteran para-cyclist Robert Labbé of Québec, QC rolled to the tenth position of the men’s H1 race.

Mark Ledo of Maple, ON did not finish the H3 race as he crashed in a turn. Ledo did not suffer major injuries and is expected to be on the start line for the road race.

The event continues Friday with the last set of time trial races. The mass-start road races will be featured on Saturday and Sunday in Baie-Comeau, which also hosted the same event in 2010.

PETER DISERA WINS SILVER MEDAL AT MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Disera becomes first men to win a medal at World Championships since Max Plaxton’s bronze in 2006

(Ottawa, ON – August 29, 2013) Peter Disera, of Barrie, ON, won Thursday the silver medal in the junior men competition at the 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, posting Canada’s best result at this event since 1998 when Ryder Hesjedal had won the silver medal.

Disera finished second of the 23.5-kilometer junior men race with a time of 1:20:48, just 42 seconds behind the time of the newly crowned Junior Men World Champion, Lukas Baum of Germany.

“I’m not sure if it’s the extreme fatigue or the high of being on the podium, but I feel like I’m floating,” said Disera to Canadian Cyclist after the medal presentation. “This has been an extremely successful year for me, and I am pleased to end the season with a bang. It really exceeded any expectations I had before the season. My coach and I have been working extremely hard.

“It’s all mind over matter, really. I woke up this morning hesitant, but with the small belief that I could be on the podium. Despite the traffic, I enjoyed just racing my own race, making my way through traffic one by one.

The young cyclist has enjoyed a successful season to date, winning the Junior Canadian Championships titles in the road time trial, the mountain bike cross country and in cyclo-cross, as well as winning the UCI World Cup stop at Mont-Sainte-Anne, QC earlier in August.

The last time a Canadian men had won an individual medal at this event goes back to 2006 when Max Plaxton had won the bronze medal in the U23 men’s cross-country. In 1998, now UCI WorldTour rider Ryder Hesjedal had won the silver medal in the junior men’s race at the Mountain Bike World Championships.

Other Canadians were in the race with Félix Burke and Félix Belhumeur taking the 25th and 26th rank respectively.

In the women’s junior race, Marine Lewis had the fastest time among the three Canadian women, finishing in 15th place. Rachel Pageau and Gabrielle April finished 19th and 22nd.

In Wednesday’s team relay, Canada finished in fourth place of the four-rider race. Canada started the first lap with the seventh fastest time with Disera at the helm, and then the 2013 Canadian Champion Derek Zandstra flew by everyone to bring back the team in the second place midway to the race. In the third exchange, Mitchell Bailey took the control of the race, and managed to pass the Italian rider to take the race lead with one lap to go. In the fourth lap, the 2013 Canada Cup Champion Sandra Walter worked hard to maintain the lead, but against men elite riders managed to finished cross the finish line in fourth eleven seconds off the podium.

2013 PARA-CYCLING WORLD CUP FINALS END IN MATANE, CANADA GRABS NINE MEDALS

Canada wins four medals in time trial races and four medals in road races

(Matane, QC – August 25, 2013) The 2013 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cup season came to an end on Sunday with the last set of road races at the Finals in Matane, QC, and Canada concluded the weekend in sixth place of the nation rankings with a total of nine medals.

Canada won four medals in the first two days of competition with four medals in the time trial races, and continued its medal-winning ways in the road races, adding five more medals.

On Sunday, Canada added two medals to its tally with the men’s tandem of Daniel Chalifour (Mont-Laurier, QC) and pilot Alexandre Cloutier (Ste-Antoine-De-Tilly, QC) taking the silver medal after a breakaway that didn’t get brought back, and Nicole Clermont (Sherbrooke, QC) sprinting for the silver medal.

“It’s a little surprising, because that wasn’t the team strategy before the race started,” said Chalifour after the race to Sportcom. “We thought it would end in a sprint, and we wanted to help Alexandre and Aroussen for the finish, since Alexandre is from Matane.”

“We wanted to be part of the initial breakaway, but when we realized that we had a considerable lead, our coach told us to go for the podium. This proves that we are in the game, after our fourth place from Friday’s time trial where we finished just one second from the podium.”

Nicole Clermont took the silver medal in her second world cup race, after winning the bronze medal on Friday in the time trials. The women’s c5 race also ended in a sprint, with three riders coming together at the finish line. Clermont finished between two Americans in first and third places.

In the C1 road race, Jaye Milley (Calgary, AB) finished just off the podium in an exciting finish featuring a six-rider sprint after 1:43 of racing the 66.4 km course. Brayden McDougall (Calgary, AB) did not finish the race.

In the women’s c4 race, Marie-Claude Molnar (Ste-Adèle, QC) was unlucky in the finish of the race. Molnar fell with one kilometer to go in the race, and was well positioned for the final sprint. Molnar did not finish the race despite being a contender throughout the race.

Paralympic Hall of Famer Arnold Boldt (Saskatoon, SK) finished 11th of the men’s C2 race, just under a minute of the winning time, while development cyclist Sebastien Bouchard (Québec, QC) finished 13th of the men’s C4 race.

The Canadian relay team, composed of Charles Moreau (Trois-Rivières, QC), Mark Ledo (Maple, ON) and Robert Labbé (Québec, QC) took the sixth place. The young tandem of Melissa Boivert and Katy St-Laurent did not finish their road race.

Teams from around the world will be boarding a ferry boat on Monday, travelling to Baie-Comeau, QC for the 2013 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships, the last set para-cycling road races in 2013.
