REGISTRATION NOW ACTIVE FOR 2013 CANADIAN ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Cyclists can now register online for the top domestic road cycling races on the 2013 calendar

(Ottawa, ON – June 06, 2013) The registration process is now active for the 2013 Canadian Road Cycling Championships, scheduled over two weekends from June 20th to 30th in St-George, QC and Lac Mégantic, QC, announced Cycling Canada.

The 2013 Canadian Road Championships will feature three road cycling disciplines –the traditional road race, the individual time trials, and the fast-paced criterium– featuring cyclists in junior, U23, elite and master age categories.

In addition, the event will feature Canada’s best para-cyclists in action, in the road race and the time trial race.

The opening weekend will feature the Elite and U23 events in St-Georges, while the Junior, Master and Para-cyclists will challenge for Canadian titles on the second weekend in Lac Mégantic.

St-Georges and Lac Mégantic ready to welcome Canada’s top road cyclists

(Québec, QC – June 06, 2013) The 2013 Canadian Road Championships promises to be very exciting this summer,  making its way for the second consecutive time on the beautiful roads of Québec with the top cyclists converging onto the cities of St-Georges and Lac Mégantic, QC to race for the ultimate Canadian honors and the coveted Red and White Maple Leaf jersey.

The 2013 edition of the event will be held from June 20th to 30th, featuring the traditional road race, the individual time trials, and the always exciting criterium. The event is expected to bring over 500 riders of all ages, from juniors to masters, including para-cycling.

“We are very confident that the organizing committee led by Francis Rancourt will once again deliver a solid and challenging event as they did last year. The course will be challenging, and the support from the community will be substantial. Preparations are in its final stages, and everyone is excited for this first Canadian Championships of the 2013 season,” said Mathieu Boucher, Performance Development Director at Cycling Canada.

The Canadian Championships are an important opportunity for young riders to test their skills against World Tour and Pro-continental riders, and to grow within the Canadian competitive cycling scene.

The first weekend of competition will feature the Elite and U23 cyclists in St-Georges, while the second weekend will attract the top Para-cyclists and up-and-coming Junior cyclists as well as masters riders

This year, many of the Canadian riders racing on the WorldTour are expected to be on the start line, such as Guillaume Boivin of Longueuil, QC (Cannondale), Hugo Houle of Ste-Perpétue, QC (AG2R La Mondiale), Dominique Rollin of Boucherville, QC (FDJ and Christian Meier of Sussex, NB (Orica-GreenEDGE). All of these riders will already be in the region, representing Canada at the Tour de Beauce a week earlier.

Both defending Canadian Champions, Ryan Roth (Cambridge, ON) of Champion System Pro Cycling and Denise Ramsden of Optum-Kelly Benefits, are also expected to be present.

Added Boucher: “The event is a critical step in our Long Term Athlete Development model. The up-and coming riders will have the exciting opportunity to race against top Canadian riders from the WorldTour, and to test their skills and development.”

Cycling Teams from all over Canada are expected to be present for this race, including Canadian-based UCI Continental teams Équipe Garneau-Quebecor, and Équipe Ekoi-DeVinci and Canadian-based UCI Women’s professional cycling team GSD-Gestion Kallisto.

In addition to the traditional road races, the 2013 Canadian Road Championships will host the Canadian Sprint Challenge for the second time at Canadian Championships. The country’s top sprinters will go head to head, in heats, in a single elimination format. The top rider along with the Elite men criterium will earn their ticket to the Pro Sprint Challenge at the 2013 Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec, this upcoming September.

The organizing committee is led by the Francis Rancourt, the same organizer as the popular and classic Tour de Beauce.

CANADIAN WOMEN DO WELL AT PARX CASINO PHILLY CYCLING CLASSIC

Véronique Fortin takes eighth place with National Team; Numainville second with her professional team

(Ottawa, ON – June 3, 2013) With the objectives to focus on the race finish and good positioning, the women of the Canadian Road Cycling Team did excellent work, placing Véronique Fortin (Gatineau, QC) in eighth position and Karol-Ann Canuel (Amos, QC) in eleventh.

Unfortunately, both Canuel and Gabrielle Pilote-Fortin (Neuville, QC) were involved in a crash in the first lap, but despite the speed bump, Canuel managed to come back to the main group to take the 11th place. Véronique Labonté (Montréal, QC) finished 30th. As a direct result of the crash, Pilote-Fortin was forced to abandon the race.

Representing Team Optum-Kelly Benefit, Canada’s Joëlle Numainville (Montreal, QC) took the second place in the final sprint against American Evelyn Stevens of Team Specialized-lululemon.

The next steps for these women are final preparations for the 2013 Canadian Road Championships, to be disputed at St-Georges, from June 20-23.

WARM WELCOME TO KAIT CAVERS, JOINING BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AT CYCLING CANADA

(Ottawa, ON – June 3, 2013) Cycling Canada is pleased to announce the selection of Kait Cavers as Business Development Manager for the organization.  She has begun her new duties at the national office in Ottawa and will be looking forward to meeting the many stakeholders that contribute to the sport of cycling, its presentation and its many stories.

Kait is a graduate of Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC and most recently served as the Marketing Coordinator for Nando’s Canada with major responsibilities in the areas of national marketing campaigns and overseeing the Nando’s social media presence.

In her new role with Cycling Canada Cyclisme she will be working with our sales agents, DEC Sports led by Peter Cosentino, to assist with the development and activation of the marketing strategy.  In addition Kait will manage industry partner liaison and support sponsor servicing and cross promotional initiatives with partners.  She will oversee the organization’s social media strategy and manage the content of the website.

CANADA’S ROAD CYCLING TEAM TO BE POWERFUL AT TOUR DE BEAUCE

Four WorldTour riders to race under the Team Canada colours

(Ottawa, ON – May 30, 2013) Some of Canada’s top road cyclists will race together on the national team at the upcoming Tour de Beauce, which runs from June 11-16.

Four of the seven riders to represent Canada at this prominent road cycling race hail from UCI WorldTour professional cycling teams: Hugo Houle (Ste-Perpétue, QC/AG2R La Mondiale), Dominique Rollin (Boucherville, QC/FDJ), Christian Meier (Sussex, NB/Orica-GreenEDGE) and Guillaume Boivin (Longueuil, QC/Cannondale Pro Cycling)

In addition to these WorldTour riders, Nic Hamilton (Victoria, BC/Jelly Belly Cycling), Rob Britton (Victoria, BC/Team Raleigh) and Marsh Cooper (Delta, BC/Optum-Kelly Benefit) will suit-up for Canada. All three are members of UCI Continental teams that are not participating in the Tour de Beauce.

“I’m excited to race at home in front of family and friends. Finishing second at 19 seconds last year [racing with Team SpiderTech], I am motivated to do better. I think I have what it takes to win the 2013 Tour de Beauce,” said Houle, a WorldTour rider racing with AG2R La Mondiale.

Dominique Rollin, who is arriving from Europe after racing the prestigious Giro d’Italia, comes back to a familiar environment. “It’s nice to return to a race in which I grew up and discovered the international field. This little homecoming the national team has given me will be a great pleasure and offers me a chance to express myself on roads I know well.”

Both Hamilton and Meier raced the 2012 edition of the Tour de Beauce sporting the Canadian uniform. Cooper and Houle also took part in the race last season, with their respective teams. Houle and Meier finished second and third respectively in the general classification, while Hamilton finished second in the King of the Mountain classification.

“The Canadian Team is racing the Tour de Beauce with the objectives to win stages and contend for the overall classification, to score big UCI America Tour points. We are bringing our A-list of riders with the intention to show how strong Canada has become, with four of our seven riders racing every week on some of the most prestigious races around the globe,” said Gord Fraser, the Men’s National Road Team Manager.

“We want to give our athletes much-needed race days while on hiatus with their respective trade teams. We also want to continue to build the momentum of cycling in Canada with elite men’s results as of late,” added Fraser.

The 2013 Tour de Beauce is a prominent road cycling stage race of disputed over 734 km in six days. Around 130 cyclists from 19 teams from across the globe are expected to compete at this year’s event.

Team Canada will be wearing the new national team uniform from Louis Garneau Sports throughout the six-day stage race.

UPDATE ON CANADIAN SELECTIONS FOR JUNIOR PAN-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Mexico now set to host 2013 UCI Junior Pan-American Championships, form July 7 to 12

(Ottawa, ON – May 30, 2013) Following a clarification of the rules by the International Cycling Union (UCI), Cycling Canada is modifying the composition of the team selected to the 2013 UCI Junior Pan American Track Championships.

For the past three years, second-year cadet riders have been allowed to compete in the track events at the Junior Pan American Championships. With this precedent, Cycling Canada invited second-year cadets (born in 1997) to participate in the selection camp in Los Angeles. Two of these athletes produced outstanding results at the camp and one of them, Derek Gee, was selected to the team. The other, Connor Byway, was chosen as an alternate. These selections were announced on May 9.

Since then, COPACI announced that both the dates and location of the 2013 Junior Pan American Championships had changed. In that announcement, it was specifically stated that the event was for Junior-age athletes born in 1995 and 1996. Cycling Canada sought clarification on the status of second-year cadet athletes, and the UCI made it clear that, under rule 1.1.036, cadets cannot compete at the Junior Pan American Championships.

As a consequence of this rule, below is the modified composition of the Canadian Team for the 2013 Junior Pan American Track Championships, scheduled for July 7-12 in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

Note: Kristen Sears (18, Ancaster ON), Madeleine McConnell (17, Ancaster ON) and Sarah Mason (17, London, ON) were unable to attend the trials due to injury and will be given the opportunity to attempt the standard at the Forest City Velodrome in London, ON, on June 12.

CATHARINE PENDREL BACK ON THE WORLD CUP PODIUM, TAKING THIRD PLACE

World Cup in Nove Mesto showcases strong Canadian results with Plaxton fifth and Kabush seventh 

(Nove Mesto na Morave, CZE – May 26, 2013) Canadian Mountain Bike Catharine Pendrel of Kamloops, BC, racing with Team Luna Pro, was back on the podium today at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Tour, taking the third place on the second race of the 2013 season in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic.

Pendrel crossed the finish line after 24.2 km of racing with a time of 1:27:11 for the third place. Slovenia’s Tanja Zakelj took her career first victory at the World Cup level, while Maja Wloszczowska of Poland crossed the finish line in second place.

“Today was a lot of fun,” commented Pendrel to Canadian Cyclist.  “It was definitely a lot better than last week, a return to the aggressive rider I am.  The racing was top notch with all these strong girls.  I felt good and then Tanja made an attack, and she had some pretty amazing speed.  I was feeling the earlier effort and had to regroup and get back into my rhythm.”

 

Emily Batty of Brooklin, ON, racing with Trek Factory Racing, made the Top 10 for the second consecutive week, taking the ninth spot in today’s race.

With the third place, Pendrel jumps to the sixth spot on the UCI World Cup overall standings, followed by Batty in seventh place.

Racing with Canadian-based professional team SCOTT-3RoxRacing, Amanda Sin of Collinwood, ON finished 32nd.

In the men’s race, Canada’s Max Plaxton of Victoria, BC, racing for Sho-Ari Cannondale, had a great result, taking the fifth spot – his best performance of the season. Plaxton, the two-time reigning Canadian Champion, cross the line with a time of 1:41:35.

“It was hard on the last two laps,” said Plaxton to Canadian Cyclist.  “With my start I was number 37.  I was lucky to not have any problems at the start and I paced myself for the first half of the race.  With two laps to go I could see the Czech rider [Ondrej Cink] in front of me, so I motivated to chase harder. My first top five in Europe, so I’m really pleased.”

 

Geoff Kabush of Courtenay, BC racing for SCOTT-3RoxRacing, also had a great run on this second week of World Cup action, taking the seventh place by completing the race just 10 seconds past Plaxton.

Derek Zandstra, also of SCOTT-3RoxRacing, bounced back this week, placing 31st.

The next event on the 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup June 8 in Fort William, Great Britain, with the presentation of the first downhill race of the calendar.

2013 Mountain Bike World Cup Tour continues in Czech Republic

(Nove Mesto na Morave, CZE – May 25, 2013) Mountain bikers Cayley Brooks and Léandre Bouchard were the top Canadians today as the 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup tour resumed, both finishing in 27th of the U23 races in the Czech Republic.

Brooks posted a time of 1:27:09 in the second women’s U23 race of the 2013 World Cup tour, while Bouchard realized a time 1:22:01 in the men’s competition.

In the women’s U23 race, Andréanne Lanthier-Nadeau,finished 31st. Haley Smith, which had a good result last weekend as the World Cup season opened, did not finish today’s contest.

Jeremy Martin took the 28th position of the men’s U23 race, right behind Bouchard. Mitch Bailey posted the 38th fastest time.

In the overall World Cup rankings, Smith remains the top Canadian thanks to her performance last weekend, sitting in 20th place overall. Cayley Brooks sits in 25th place, while Lanthier-Nadeau is in 30th position.

In the junior men race, Canada’s lone rider, Marc-André Fortier, raced to the 35th place.

The second stop of the 2013 tour continues tomorrow with the presentation of both men and women elite races.

TALENT IDENTIFICATION EVENT DESCENDS ON VICTORIA MAY 26

Canadian Sport Institute Pacific is pleased to bring its new talent identification camp – PODIUM SEARCH – to Victoria on May 26. 

PODIUM SEARCH, a free, one-day talent identification camp, is for athletes aged 14-22 to test themselves and see if they have what it takes to accept the challenge to become part of Canada’s sporting elite.

Athletes who participate in PODIUM SEARCH will be evaluated for possible selection for Canadian Sport Institute Pacific’s Talent Development Programs (TDPs), including the Canadian Sport School, and the new Cycling Endurance Talent Development program – based on their test scores during the talent identification camp.  The TDPs are designed to propel athletes from their developmental stages to the Olympic podium.

All of the athletes who participate in Victoria’s upcoming PODIUM SEARCH will experience a number of different testing protocols that are similar to those used by athletes on Canada’s national teams.  Each participant will walk away with a copy of their test scores and a good understanding of what it takes to become part of Canada’s sporting elite.

In addition to being tested by world-class sport performance experts, athletes will hear the event’s keynote speaker and London 2012 Olympic silver medallist in rowing, Jeremiah Brown.
