CANADA OPENS NEW WORLD‑CLASS VELODROME IN EDMONTON, MARKING A MAJOR MILESTONE FOR TRACK CYCLING NATIONWIDE

OTTAWA, ON (January 30, 2026) – Cycling Canada is proud to support and celebrate the opening of the state of the art Alberta Velodrome at Coronation Park in Edmonton, Alberta. This landmark facility will strengthen Canada’s high‑performance pathway, expand community access to track cycling, and position the country to host major domestic and international events for decades to come.

“The Alberta Velodrome represents a transformational investment in the future of Canadian cycling; a place where community riders, emerging talent, and world-class athletes can develop and thrive together,” noted Cycling Canada CEO, Mathieu Boucher. “From grassroots participation to high-performance, this facility reflects the power of sport to inspire, connect, and elevate people of all ages and backgrounds. Cycling Canada is proud to celebrate this milestone, which strengthens our national sport infrastructure and helps set the stage for the next generation of Canadian champions. We extend our sincere thanks to the many partners whose shared vision, collaboration, and commitment made this project a reality.”

The Alberta Velodrome officially opened to the public on January 27, 2026, becoming Canada’s newest UCI certified indoor velodrome and one of the most advanced cycling facilities in North America. Located within the newly completed Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre, the velodrome brings world‑class sport infrastructure to the heart of Edmonton while remaining fully accessible to local riders, clubs, schools, and community programs.

“We are deeply grateful for our partnership with Cycling Canada, whose leadership and collaboration have been instrumental in bringing this UCI Category 1 velodrome to life,” remarks Scott Fisher, Board Chair of the Alberta Velodrome Association. “Together, we are establishing Edmonton as a national hub for cycling and a destination for world-class and international events – while inspiring the next generation of Canadian cyclists and elevating the sport on the global stage.”

The Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre, a 16,600‑square‑metre multi‑purpose complex designed by FaulknerBrowns, in collaboration with hcma and Dub Architects, has already earned major international recognition, receiving both a WAF Future Projects Award and a 2024 Canadian Architect Award of Merit. Its striking elliptical form is built around the velodrome itself, positioned one story above ground level, giving visitors a dramatic overhead view as cyclists reach speeds of up to 80 km/h.

Kelsey Mitchell, Olympic track cycling medalist says, “It’s crazy to think that there will be a world class velodrome in Edmonton, Alberta! This is a huge step for not only the cycling community, but the next generation of athletes looking to try something new. Can’t wait to be back with the Edmonton community and thrilled to see who comes to try the track next!”

The velodrome opens with momentum already building, with the 2026 Canadian Track Championships (U17/Jr) set to be the first national event hosted in the facility. As Canada’s newest indoor velodrome, it strengthens the high‑performance pathways, expanding year‑round access in Western Canada and supporting athletes on the road to Olympic and Paralympic success, while also opening its doors to community riders, clubs, schools, and developing athletes. This milestone signals the beginning of a new era for Canadian track cycling and lays the foundation for sustained success in the years ahead.
