DOUBLE DUTCH VICTORY IN UCI BMX SUPERCROSS WORLD CUP ABBOTSFORD, NYHAUG 4TH

Double Aussie victory in overall 2012 BMX Supercross World Cup series

(Abbotsford, BC – September 15 2012) – ‘Dutch army’ riders Twan van Gendt and Laura Smulders took top honors at the final stop of the 2012 UCI BMX World Cup series in Abbotsford. Aussie riders Sam Willoughby and Caroline Buchanan won the overall 2012 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup Series.

In a star studded final Van Gendt pulled of his first ever win in a World Cup event. Van Gendt seemed unthreatened after most of the favorites crashed in the first turn. There was a big pile up with Tory Nyhaug (CAN) Connor Fields (USA) and Barry Nobles (USA). Sam Willoughby tried to catch up with Van Gendt after that but the Dutchman, who recorded the fastest lap time in the series, rode off to victory unthreatened.

Olympic bronze medalist Laura Smulders on the other hand was in the right place at the right time. Smudlers saw the initial leaders Caroline Buchanan (AUS) and Brooke Crain (USA) go down in the first turn and then Smulders was close behind Lauren Reynolds (AUS) who was chasing Felicia Stancil (USA) who was in the lead to win the race. For some reason the last two riders crashed on the third straight and gave the victory to a jubilant and very surprised Laura Smulders.

CANADA’S TORY NYHAUG RACES CAREER BEST TIME TRIAL; WILLOUGHBY TAKES FIRST

Connor McCormack rides to eighth place

(Abbotsford, BC – September 14 2012)  Canadian Olympian Tory Nyhaug (Coquitlam, BC) raced his best time trial of the season today in Abbotsford at the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup Finals, coming in second only by 0.023 seconds behind the reigning World Champion Sam Willoughby (AUS).

Today’s race saw some of the best riders in the world compete for the title of the fastest man and woman on one of the fastest tracks in the world.  The fastest time of the day of 30.373 seconds was posted by Willoughby, followed tightly by Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam. National coach Adam Muys said that today’s race was “Super great!  [it] shows that [Tory’s] back in form and prepared to win it tomorrow.  Connor McCormack finished eighth in the Superfinal, his best performance this year and is very confident in racing tomorrow.”

“The four-year dream to have a BMX Supercross start hill and track that meets the UCI requirements to host a Supercross World Cup event in BC came true today. The legacy of hosting this BMX Supercross World Cup in Abbotsford will provide Canadian athletes the opportunity to compete on home soil against the best riders around the world.  A track that is among the top Supercross tracks in the world,” said Cycling BC Chief Executive Officer Keith Ryan.

To top off the day, riders who made it to the Superfinal had the pleasure of sitting in the hot seat: a Zamboni, which was generously donated by the Abbotsford Heat for today’s event. Together with the Zamboni, RCMP Staff Sergeant Bill Laidlaw was on hand to escort riders into the hot seat and onto the podium by while the mayor of Abbotsford Bruce Banman presented the awards to the fastest man Sam Willoughby and fastest woman, Caroline Buchanan of Australia.

Saturday’s events start off with an autograph session with some of the top riders and will be followed by the men’s 1/8 Finals at 13:10.

— Gillian Carleton, Canadian Champion, Points race

« It feels pretty nice [to win the Points race]. To be honest, I haven’t been on the track since coming back from London [Olympic Games], so coming here was my first time feeling that speed, and pushing a big gear so it was a little shock to the system. It feels like I have been steadily improving race after race. It’s nice to get the track legs back. It’s beautiful riding here, it’s outside. Very exciting…”

“I just wanted to make sure I scored points on most of the sprints, and win a couple if I could, if I wasn’t gonna put out too much effort. It went really well. I was able to stay near the front and pick up a couple points right from the beginning, which starts the race nicely. I really had only one bad sprint where I wasn’t featured in the top two. It was good, and consistent. “

“I feel pretty tired. I haven’t done anything this intense in one month. Tomorrow is a new day. I just have to recover tonight. Honestly, it’s very nice racing here. It’s always pretty motivational to see the young kids race outdoors in the sun. I am looking forward and see what happens tomorrow – but it will certainly be fun.”

“I’m very happy. This is my first Canadian title in all disciplines (Road and Track), so it’s a little pride for me. I knew the race would be a bit special. There are not a lot of riders here, so I was expecting the race to be a little scattered on the track. I went with a fairly rapid pace because everyone was left to fend for themselves, and this is what happened. I managed to take three laps – and this is how it is done.”

“I feel good about the omnium. I have not done a lot of track lately, but I’ve had a great season on the road and I think my endurance is there, which allows me to recover from a race to another. I expect good things tomorrow. I should recover well tonight. In the Pursuit, I am in good shape, and I have high expectations and I want win it. For the scratch race, it will all depend on the overall rank of the omnium , and finally for the kilo, that is the ultimate effort. I can not wait.”

CANADIAN SELECTION ANNOUNCED FOR ROAD CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Canada selects one of strongest teams heading to UCI Road World Championships

(Ottawa, ON – September 13, 2012) With less than a week prior to the start of the UCI Road World Championships held in Limburg, the Netherlands, Cycling Canada is pleased to announce those who have been selected to represent Canada at the event.

The event starts on September 16 with the newly added Team Time Trial race for professional cycling teams, and closes on September 23 with the marquee Elite Men Road Race.

The team is headlined by World Tour veterans Ryder Hesjedal (Victoria, BC/Garmin-Sharp) who won the 2012 Giro d’Italia and represented Canada at the Olympic Games, François Parisien (Repentigny, QC/Team SpiderTech p/b C10), seven-time Canadian Time Trial Champion Svein Tuft (Langley, BC/Orica-GreenEDGE) and David Veilleux (Cap Rouge, QC/Team EuropCar). Tuft will also be racing the Time Trial.

“We have more depth than ever to select our teams for major international events. This is a great sign that cycling in Canada is moving in the right direction, and is growing rapidly in popularity. The team we have is experienced competing against the best in the World. We are travelling to Limburg to be competitive and have a shot at winning,” said Gord Fraser, who will be heading the Elite Men team at this event.”

In women’s action, Canada will be sending five riders for the road race. The squad is headlined by Olympians Joëlle Numainville (Montréal, QC/Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefits Strategies) and Leah Kirchmann (Winnipeg, MB/Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefits Strategies). Lex Albrecht (Barrie, ON/Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefits Strategies), Véronique Labonté (La Guadeloupe, QC/CSM Epinay sur Seine) and Karol-Ann Canuel (Amos, QC/Vienne-Futuroscope) have also been selected to race at the World Championships.Rhae-Christie Shaw (Team Exergy Twenty12) will compete in the time trail event where she rode to an impressive Top 10 last year. Numainville will also compete in the individual time trial.

Among the Espoir (U23) categories, Canada has a strong team of riders racing in the road race. Hugo Houle (Ste-Perpétue, QC/Team SpiderTech p/b C10), David Boily (Québec, QC/Team SpiderTech p/b C10) and Canadian U23 Road Race Champion Antoine Duchesne (Blainville, QC/Garneau-Québecor-Norton Rose) will all be racing the road race. Both Houle and Boily will also be racing the time trial, with Houle winning the Canadian U23 Time Trial title this past June.

“Our riders will be very competitive in Limburg. The course suits their abilities, and they have both proven their skills throughout the past season. Houle came in second at the challenging Tour de Beauce, while David Boily made history last season by sporting the Yellow Jersey at the Tour de l’Avenir for five days,” said Luc Arseneau, coach of the development program at Cycling Canada. “We have made some smart decisions in preparing for these World Championships, and we have three riders on the start line compared to one last year.”

In the junior categories, Canada will be represented by some young riders who have excelled at national and international races this season. Ariane Bonhomme (Gatineau, QC) and Saskia Kowalchuk are headlining the women’s junior team as the two Canadian Champions. Audrey Labrie (Prévost, QC) and Allyson Gillard (Beaupré, QC) will be joining the team. In men’s junior action, both Canadian Champions in the Road and Time Trial men junior races Chris Prendergast (Winnipeg, MB), and Nigel Ellsay (Courtenay, BC) are also expected to be on the start lines in the Netherlands, joined by Benjamin Perry (St. Catharines, ON).

BOTH BMX WORLD CHAMPIONS TO COMPETE AT THE UCI BMX SUPERCROSS WORLD CUP IN ABBOTSFORD

Tory Nyhaug along with 11 other riders make up Canada’s Team

(Abbotsford, BC – September 12 2012) World Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist Sam Willoughby (AUS) will headline the men’s racing at the 2012 BMX Supercross World Cup this weekend in Abbotsford British Columbia.  The women’s racing is equally as strong with World Champion Magalie Pottier (FRA) and Olympic Bronze medalist Laura Smulders (NED) competing to win the final World Cup of the 2012 season.

Together with these champions, the start list includes World Cup leaders Connor Fields (USA) and Caroline Buchanan (AUS). This is Canada’s inaugural UCI BMX Supercross World Cup and the results will decide who will be crowned the 2012 World Cup Champion in both the men’s and women’s series.  Canada’s Tory Nyhaug (Coquitlam, BC) is currently ranked 5th overall in the World Cup series and will be aiming for his first World Cup win. A victory on home soil for the Coquitlam native will vault him in to third place in the final standings; 11 other Canadian athletes will join Tory in the weekend’s races.

Canada is joined by 12 other nations at the World Cup Finals on September 14 – 15 in Abbotsford.

“We are certainly very excited to bring the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup finals to Canada for the first time and Abbotsford will be a great host” says Johan Lindstrom, CEO of Global SX Events Inc. (GSX) who oversees the general management of the UCI (International Cycling Union) BMX Supercross World Cup. “With the Abbotsford BMX Supercross being the first major BMX event after the Olympic Games, we expect a fantastic showdown between the very best as well as great interest from media and fans around the world” continued Lindstrom.

BMX races are often won by the smallest of margins with their outcomes determined by the athlete who best combines the fastest start sprint with technical skill, upper body strength and a healthy dose of daring.  The Abbotsford track promises to challenge the technical ability and strength of each rider. PENDREL RIDES TO 15TH AS SHE DEFENDED HER WORLDS TITLE

Elite Women, Elite Men and Junior Men competition held today in Austria at Mountain Bike Worlds

(Saalfelden, AUT – September 8, 2012) Catharine Pendrel (Kamloops, BC) posted the top Canadian result in the Women Elite cross-country race at the 2012 UCI World Championships in Saalfelden, Austria, on Saturday, riding the 15th spot as she defended her rainbow jersey as the 2011 World Champion.

Pendrel, who won the UCI World Cup Title this season, crossed the line showing a time deficit of 4:51 on the winner and newly crowned World Champion, Julie Bresset of France (1:32.25). Norway’s Gunn-Rita Dahle-Felsjaa came second, while Georgia Gould of the United States of America took the bronze medal.

Emily Batty, who suffered from a clavicle fracture only days prior to the 2012 Olympic Games in London and still managed to complete the race, went on today to post the 18th fastest time. Sandra Walter took the 35th spot, while both Amanda Sin and 2004 Olympic Silver Medallist Marie-Hélène Prémont were lapped in the last lap, finishing 37th and 38th respectively.

“The Olympics are an all-consuming event. Catharine and Emily put everything they had into the Olympics this year. It’s difficult to recover your form in time to challenge at the World Championships when the two events are so close together. Both riders will be looking forward to some well deserved rest and recovery now. I’m confident that with after a couple of weeks, both riders will eagerly begin training for 2013. I know they’ll both be back on the podium next season,” said Canadian Mountain Bike Team Head Coach Dan Proulx.

Added Proulx: “This was a very good season for Canada’s women. We went into Worlds as the number 1 ranked team in the World. Pendrel won the World Cup series overall. Emily Batty made the World Cup podium several times and reached an entirely new level of performance. Catharine Pendrel won 3 World Cups. We have every reason to feel optimistic about the future.”

In the Men’s Elite race, Switzerland stole the show by sweeping the podium of the 38.3-km race. Nino Schurter took the victory with a time of 1:40.44, followed 29s later by his teammate Lukas Fluckiger, and 51s later by Mathias Fluckiger. Canada’s Geoff Kabush placed 18th, while Derek Zandstra placed 23rr and Raphael Gagné took the 36th rank. Cameron Jette was lapped with three of eight laps to go.

Also featured today was the Men junior race. Canadian Champion Marc-Antoine Nadon of Timmins, ON posted the best Canadian result, in 33rd place. Alexandre Vialle and Peter Disera were both lapped in the last lap. Four riders from France placed within the Top 6 in a tightly contested race won by New Zealand’s Anton Cooper.

The 2012 UCI Mountain Bike and Trial World Championships ends tomorrow with the presentation the Cross Country Eliminator race, which makes its debut on the UCI World Championships programme.

GOLDEN DAY FOR CANADA’S ROBBI WELDON AND LYNE BESSETTE

Geneviève Ouellet and Emilie Roy take fourth place in nail-biting sprint finish of the Women’s Road Race

(London, GBR – September 7, 2012) It was a golden day for Canadian Para-Cycling Team at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, Great Britain, with the powerful tandem of Robbi Weldon (Thunder Bay, ON) and Olympian Lyne Bessette (Knowlton, QC) riding to the gold medal in the Women’s B Road Race, in front of a delirious crowd.

For the first time at these 2012 Games for cycling events, the Canadian Anthem was played to the crowd gathered at Brands Hatch to cheer on the para-cyclists of all nations.

Weldon and Bessette crossed the finish line with a time of 2:08.26, showing a lead of 34 seconds on their closest competitors and silver medallists, the tandem from Spain.

“I am very happy. Lyne and I are thrilled about this golden performance. It’s good to end on a golden note. We had a fantastic race. Everyone was strong in the peloton. We had respect for everyone,” said Robbi Weldon, a former cross-country skier turned cyclist after the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Games.

The two tandems, Canada and Spain, separated from the main peloton in the fifth of eight laps, and they managed to increase their lead throughout the rest of the race. “Fortunately for us, no one followed our big attack but Spain. We worked hard non-stop until the end. Anything can happen with bikes as we saw with the guys in the time trial [the men tandem punctured with 1 kilometre to go],” continued Weldon.

“What we wanted to do was to be patient in the early laps,” added Bessette. “At the mid-point, the goal was to make the race a little harder if nothing had happened.”

The two fought hard together in the break, and ultimately, Canada’s golden girls placed an attack on the very last lap, which proved to be the winning move. “Although they did not have much experience, the Spanish tandem is very strong, so it was perfect for us. Then, it was up to me to decide when it was time to attack for the win,” said Bessette.

“We are very happy with this particular medal. We were disappointed with the time trial so we wanted to take the win today. It ends well the Games,” said Bessette, who also took the opportunity to announce her retirement from Para-cycling. “I wanted a happy ending on this last day. I can leave happy. It was a very rewarding experience, which grounded me as I worked with exceptional people.”

The Dutch team went on to finish the line in third place, edging the second Canadian tandem of Geneviève Ouellet and Émily Roy in a nail-biting finish for the bronze.

“I’m glad with the fourth position in a race that our teammates won,” said Geneviève Ouellet. “We gave everything we had, and it is still surprising for a small tandem like ours, not very powerful, to finish second in a sprint for the bronze,” added Ouellet, competing at her second Paralympic Games.

“I’m thinking about my future right now. Currently, there may be the 2013 World Championships in Baie-Comeau, but it is certain that I will not go further than that,” admitted Ouellet.

“The two Canadian tandems raced to win today. Today, what was important was that Canada won. After the excellent attack placed by Robbi and Lyne in the sixth lap, our role was to answer every other attacks by other countries. In the final sprint, we were able to hang on to the wheel of the Netherlands. They were on the podium throughout the year, so we knew it was a good wheel to follow. In the end, Canada won the race and that’s what matters. It is certain that we are a little disappointed because we won the chocolate medal awarded to the fourth place, and we would have liked to return to Canada with a real medal,” said Roy.

In the men’s tandem race, Canada’s tandem of Daniel Chalifour and Alexandre Cloutier, the reigning Canadian Champions in the event, finished their race in ninth spot.

The tandem rode safely within the peloton for the first 88 km of 104km, and unfortunately missed the attack that will eventually prove to be the winning move.

The road race for the tricycle was also held today. Toronto’s Shelley Gautier was lapped and did not finish the race, while Marie-Eve Croteau did not start as she is still recovering from an injury.

The team relay was also held to end these Paralympic Games. Canada’s team comprised of Robert Labbé (H1), Mark Beggs (H2) and Mark Ledo (H3) placed in 5th.
