TORY NYHAUG, SABRINA MILLMAN REPEAT AS CANADIAN BMX TIME TRIAL CHAMPIONS

Both Nyhaug and Millman take third straight Elite titles

(Abbotsford, BC – August 31, 2012) The 2012 Canadian BMX Championships opened today after exciting time trial at the newly improved track at the Abbotsford BMX Club in Abbotsford, British Colombia.

With significant improvements made over the summer on the track, today riders in the Elite and Junior categories attacked the straights and banks with speed – and lots of it.

Olympian Tory Nyhaug (Cycling BC /Redline Bicycle) took the men’s title, posting a time of 31.48s in the SuperFinals to win his third straight Elite titles since turning Elite last season. At last year’s Championships, Nyhaug swept both the Time Trial and BMX titles.

The 2012 Olympian, who came back from a major surgery that saw his spleen removed a few months ago, was obviously pleased with the results.

“I got some good clean laps today. I made a few mistakes, but it’s all good and happy to come home with the jersey. It’s a little weird but cool to see all the banners and parents out. We usually come here a no one is here. It’s definitely cool to have the Canadian Championships in my backyard and especially the World Cup (Sep 13-15) It’s going to be great,” said Nyhaug, who represented Canada at the 2012 Olympic Games.

“Overall, the experience in London was very positive. I did everything I could do within the timeframe that we had. Even though it didn’t work out the way I wanted, I was really happy on how everything went. I got some good training at home since then, and today I won the jersey.”

Nyhaug, Canada’s best ranked rider on the UCI BMX SuperCross tour, qualified with the best time to race the SuperFinals. The Top 4 riders of the Elite Men advanced to the evening SuperFinals.

National team member Connor McCormack (Cycling BC) posted the second fastest time of 31.87s for the silver medal, while Derek Spiko (Dkoi Bikes/War Clothing) came third with a time of 34.04s to round up the podium.

In the women’s front, Sabrina Millman (Staats Bicycle) also extended her winning streak to three. Millman won both titles in the previous edition of the event, and is establishing herself as a force in women’s BMX in Canada.

Millman sped to the solo victory by posting a time of 37.07s, after qualifying with the fastest time. The victory by Millman is sweeter, since she is still in recovery mode after twice breaking her hand.

“I feel very good. I didn’t really prepare. I hurt my hand in the practice earlier this week. I broke my wrist twice this last year, and then my hand before Worlds. It still hurts. I am just pushing through it. I am very nervous about tomorrow’s BMX races. I’ll give my all”

Amelia Walsh (Team Ontario) took the second place and silver medal stopping the clock at 38.42s, while Sarah Biron (Équipe du Québec) grabbed bronze with 40.89s.

In the junior races, James Palmer (Cycling BC / Yess Bikes) rode away with the victory in the Men’s category, while Chelsea Kingston (Team GHP) took the title in the women’s category.

Racing continues tomorrow for all racing categories. Over 200 cyclists of all ages will be racing for the ultimate Canadian BMX honor, the coveted Maple Leaf jersey awarded to the Canadian Champion.

MORE VELODROME ACTION AT THE PARALYMPIC GAMES IN LONDON

Boldt, Milley and McDougall in action for Day 2 of track cycling

(London, GBR – August 31, 2012) The 2012 Paralympic Games continued today with yet more exciting track cycling action in the state-of-the-art velodrome at the Olympic Park in London.

Eric Van Den Eynde, Head coach of the Canadian Para-Cycling Team, was very thoughtful after the second day of competition at the track. “For the second day on the track, if we look at individual performances, it went well. It is certain that at the Paralympic Games, we are always looking at medal performances, but we must also look at the individual and personal performances. It should be observed that the level of competition is much stronger here.”

In the Men’s C2 individual Pursuit, Arnold Boldt of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, went on to place 12th in the race, posting a qualifying time of 4:13.458.

Jaye Milley of Calgary placed seventh of the C1 Individual Pursuit with time of 4:24.673, while friend and teammate Brayden McDougall was disqualified for getting too close from his competitor in the last lap of his race. Milley is coming back from an injury that saw him miss valuable training time.

“The only shadow of the day is disqualification of Brayden McDgougall. It is always difficult in competition with athletes who have congenital disabilities. Brayden was probably very excited by the noise of the crowd, and approached within 10m of his competitor during the last turn. If you look at his time, today, Brayden has achieved its personal best. He still has a lot of cycling in him, and has a promising future,” added Van Den Eynde.

“With Jaye, there are many factors that must be taken into account. Jaye did suffer from an injury after the World Cup races in Baie Comeau. The injury prevented him from putting his prosthesis, so he was kept out of training for a few weeks. He returned to training intensively after his recovery, but he is not in optimal form here. Today, however, he was 12 seconds faster than his individual pursuit performance at the World Championships, so it is a very positive sign.”

The track cycling event at the 2012 Paralympic Games continues tomorrow. For complete results of the 2012 Paralympic Games in Baie-Comeau, please visit www.london2012.com.

Day 3 Update from Track Junior World Championships

There were several strong performances by the young Canadian team at the 2012 UCI Junior Track World Championships in New Zealand on Day 3.

Aidan Caves (BC) had four strong events in the six-event Omnium tonight, finishing with a fifth place in the Kilo, good for the 11th place of the overall standings for the first year Junior. Caves had two sub-par performances in the mass start races over the last two days. Caves was over-heard to say “I know I have the speed, I will have to work on my endurance to make the podium in 2013.”

In sprint action, Joakim Albert (QC) had a person best Flying 200m qualification, stopping the clock at 10.4 seconds, landing in ninth. Eric Johnstone (AB) stopping the clock in 10.9 seconds to finish in 15th, Will Simonds did not qualify for the sprint tournament with a personal best 11.6 seconds.

In the first round, Johnstone took the eventual fifth place finisher from Great Britain to the mat with a solid effort, only to come up a little short. He lost his dual just a half a wheel behind his rival, and was knocked out. Albert went through the opening round, defeating an American rider.

In the second round, Albert lost by a wheel, and had to prepare for the repêchage rounds. With the speed of all the competitors, Albert was to take the lead and control from the front. Unfortunately, the other riders had the same game plan, and at the end of a very tough sprint, Albert came second top be knocked out of the tournament. “We will race much more aggressively in the Keiren on Sunday” said the talented sprinter from Quebec.

Audrey Labrie (QC) raced near the front of the scratch race in order to stay away from trouble and be part of any move. The race came down to a sprint finish, with Labrie crossing the line in eight place.

Today, the team start with the Individual Pursuit, featuring Will Simonds and Aidan Caves, the Women’s Omnium with Kinley Gibson, as well as the Points Race with Eric Johnstone. The Women’s Keirin will feature young sprinter Audrey Labrie.

Canadian Para cycling team arrives in London

The squad, comprised of 13 athletes, three tandem pilots and six support staff, spent the past eight days at the new high-tech indoor velodrome in Roubaix. The facility managed by Arnaud Tournant, a 15-time world champion, Olympic champion and world record holder in the Kilo, allowed Canada the best preparation possible for the Games.

‘’The opportunity to train at that velodrome with a high quality support staff was an ideal preparation for the athletes,’’ said Canada’s head coach Eric Van den Eynde.

In London, Canada looks to climb the world order in the sport. The rookies and the veterans are determined to leave their mark.
