Broadcast Schedule of London 2012 Paralympic Games

CTV, TSN2, Sportsnet ONE, RDS, RDS2, AMI to share Opening and Closing Ceremonies and daily highlight shows

Ottawa, August 24, 2012 – Now it will be easier than ever to follow your Canadian Paralympic Team as they strive for gold in London August 29 to September 9, 2012!

The Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) in conjunction with its media partners is pleased to announce the complete broadcast schedule of the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Broadcasters include Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium and its partners, as well as AMI. In addition, live, up-to-the minute Team Canada results, photos, videos, schedules and news will be available on www.paralympic.ca every day of the Games.  

Television

The Games will kick-off with a two-hour Opening Ceremony extravaganza on August 29, which will be carried live on RDS2 beginning at 3:30 p.m. EST (plus an encore presentation on RDS on August 30 at 6:30am EST), and later in the day at 9 p.m. EST on TSN2 and on AMI with described video. CTV will also air the Opening Ceremony on Saturday, September 1 at 1 p.m. (2 p.m. in Saskatchewan).

Félix Séguin and Canada’s Chef de Mission Dr. Gaétan Tardif will call the Opening Ceremony on RDS2 while Paul Romanuk and Canada’s Assistant Chef de Mission Elisabeth Walker-Young will provide English language commentary.      

A daily highlights show showcasing the day’s performances, medal winners, athlete interviews and event features will be hosted by Romanuk and broadcast from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. EST August 30 to September 8 between TSN2 and Sportsnet ONE. AMI will provide the highlights with description service. 

Séguin will host RDS2’s daily highlights for francophones also at 11 p.m. EST most days. Viewers will also be able to watch a repeat of the previous day’s show on RDS at 8:30 a.m. or 10 a.m. EST daily.

Complete coverage of the Closing Ceremony on September 9 will also be available on Sportsnet ONE and AMI at 9 p.m. EST with Romanuk and Walker-Young again providing commentary. Séguin and Tardif will also team up once more on RDS for the Closing Ceremony airing at 2 p.m. one day later on September 10.

Additionally, two of the features from the Consortium’s Difference Makers series will feature Paralympians. Hosted by Rick Hansen (English) and Chantal Petitclerc (French), the series asks elite athletes to reveal inspiring stories of those who made a difference in their lives.

Online Streaming

As previously announced, for the first time in history, Canadians can watch live multiple online streams of Paralympic Summer Games throughout the 12 days of competition. Five digital streams will offer a total of 580 hours of live coverage. Three feeds will offer daily uninterrupted coverage of swimming, wheelchair basketball, and athletics, while two additional channels will cover a range of sports and will show a “best of” coverage from the day. All digital channels can be accessed from CTVParalympics.ca and RDSparalympiques.ca.

A schedule for these digital channels will be announced next week.

In addition to the live streaming, the Consortium’s digital coverage also includes a comprehensive video on demand and Paralympic news library available online and via mobile platforms.

Website and Social Media

Supporting the online streaming and television broadcast initiatives will be athlete biographies, competition updates, results and photos on both Paralympic.ca and CTVParalympics.ca/RDSparalympiques.ca.

In addition, the CPC partnered with the Consortium earlier this year to create its London 2012 Paralympic Games promotional campaign, Super Athletes. The Super Athlete spots are a dramatic and edgy look at some of Canada’s best Paralympians in short vignettes identified by the nickname of the featured athlete. LARGE CANADIAN TEAM HEADING TO MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

39 cyclists heading to Austria to race for World Championships titles

(Ottawa, ON – August 22, 2012) Cycling Canada is pleased to announce the athletes who will represent Canada at the 2012 UCI Mountain Bike and Trial World Championships, in Austria, in both the downhill and cross-country competitions.

The event kicks off with the downhill event on Saturday September 1 with the official downhill timed session. The Championships races for all downhill categories are on Sunday, September 2. The downhill races are held in Leogang, Austria.

Canada will send 15 downhillers to the event. The team is headlined by Canada’s top-ranked rider Steve Smith (Cassidy, BC). Claire Buchar (Whistler, BC), who won a bronze medal at last year’s World Championships, will also be a top contender for Canada in the DH event. Canadian Champions Matt Beer (St. John’s, NL) and Casey Brown (Revelstoke, BC) will also be among the Canadian contingent racing for top honours.

The cross-country races will be held the following weekend, in Saalfelden, Austria. Canada will have a large and strong team making the trip across the pond.

On the women’s side, 2011 World Champion Catharine Pendrel (Kamloops, BC) leads the team and will be defending her title. Pendrel is joined by 2012 Olympian Emily Batty (Brooklyn, ON) and Marie-Hélène Prémont (Chateau Richer, QC). All three riders are expected to be among the top contenders in Saalfelden. Sandra Walter (Vancouver, BC) and Amanda Sin (Collingwood, ON) will also compete for Canada in the elite women’s race. Canada’s women’s team is currently the highest ranked team in the World.

The men’s team is led by Geoff Kabush (Courtenay, BC), who recently posted Canada’s best ever Olympic result in men’s mountain bike – finishing 8th. He will be joined by Derek Zandstra (Trenton, ON) who is fresh off a breakthrough victory at the USA Pro XCT.  Raphael Gagné (Quebec, QC) and Cameron Jette (Toronton, ON) will also compete for Canada at the event.

2012 Olympian, Max Plaxton (Victoria, BC) has elected not to compete at this year’s championship due to injury. Downhill rider Rob Fraser (Pickering, ON) is also recovering from injury and will not attend this year’s event.

Race packages will need to be picked up the day before the athlete competes.

On-line registration will be available with entry fees as follows:

  • U17 = $40
  • Junior = $30 per event, $75 maximum
  • Para= 30$ per event
  • Master = $35 per event, $80 maximum
  • Elite Women = $40 per event, $110 maximum (Omnium – 110$ maximum)
  • Elite Men = $40 per event, $110 maximum (Omnium – 110$ maximum)

Track Junior Worlds Update – Day 1

Australia, Russia and New Zealand teams led the way as racing wrapped up this evening at the Velodrome. Very hot temperatures greeted the racers, which usually means some very quick times and the sell out crowd were not disappointed.

The Canadian Women’s Team Sprint duo of Kinley Gibson (Edmonton) and Audrey Labrie (Montreal) had a great afternoon of preparation and lined up against the team from Trinidad. The Canadians had a very respectable ride and had a great start, with both riders getting off the line very strong. The exchange was completed without hesitation and the sprint to the line was done perfectly. A sixth place in qualifying for the team and a nice way to start the competition.

Thursday’s events will see the entire six rider team from Canada participating on the track. Spirits are high and the prospects for personal best rides are a real possibility.

CANADA CUP BMX SERIES RESUME WITH A SET OF RACES IN ST. ALBERT, ALBERTA

Inaugural season of action-packed BMX action continues this weekend in Western Canada

(Ottawa, ON – August 21, 2012) The 2012 Canada Cup BMX series resumes this weekend with two races in St. Albert, Alberta, the third and fourth races of a five-race national series.

Up and coming adrenaline-seeking BMX riders will be competing side-by-side to fight for the first-ever Canada Cup title.

Connor McCormack of Vernon, BC is leading the Men’s standings after two races, while Amelia Walsh of Ayr, Ontario is at the top of the women’s standings.

Raving starts at 11am on Saturday August 25, and 10am on Sunday, August 26.

CANADA SENDS SIX CYCLISTS TO 2012 UCI JUNIORS TRACK WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Young Canadian track cyclists continue to progress after Pan Am Championships success

(Ottawa, ON – August 16, 2012) Cycling Canada is pleased to announce the six athletes who will represent Canada at the 2012 UCI Juniors Track World Championships, held in Invercargill, New Zealand, from August 22-26, 2012.

Led by junior national team coaches Rob Good and Jeff Ain, the Canadian junior team has already received some media attention whilst undertaking their last preparations on the track in Invercargill. The team has been training in New Zealand since August 14th in order to get over the jet lag and put their best wheel forward going into the most significant international competition of the season.

‘The team is very excited to be here competing amongst the best in the world. They are focused on the task at hand and ready to give it their all.’ proclaimed Rob Good, head coach of the junior team.

LEGEND PARALYMPIAN ARNOLD BOLDT MAKES COME BACK TO PARALYMPIC GAMES AFTER 20 YEARS ABSENCE

Injury to Alexandre Carrier forces withdrawal from Canadian Para-Cycling Team

(Ottawa, ON – August 16, 2012) Cycling Canada announces changes to the 2012 Canadian Para-Cycling Team heading to the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, with Paralympic Hall of Famer Arnold Boldt joining the line-up of cyclists named to the Paralympic cycling team.

With the persisting knee injury to paracyclist Alexandre Carrier (M Tandem), Cycling Canada will include first Alternate Arnold Boldt to the team travelling to London.  The initial selection of Carrier and his pilot Luc Dionne was based on a supporting role in the road race, and with the duo unable to race at full capacity, the decision was subsequently made to include Boldt to the line-up.

Boldt started cycling competitively in 2009 and since has won six national titles, including three road race Championships and two time trial championships on the road, as well as a 1000M time trial title on the track.

Arnold Boldt, who has had an illustrious career in the Paralympic Movement, will make its fifth appearance at Paralympic Games. He first competed at the 1976 Paralympic Games in Seoul, Korea, and since then has won an impressive eight Paralympic Games medals, including seven gold in Athletics. The Associate Vice President, Academic and Research, for the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology makes a return to the Paralympic Games after 20 years of absence since his last Paralympic Games competition.

At 54 years of age, Boldt is the oldest athlete on the Canadian Para-Cycling Team. Throughout his life, he earned distinguished honours, being introduced in the Canadian Paralympic Hall of Fame, the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, the Terry Fox Hall of Fame and the Saskatchewan Hall of Fame.

At the 1992 Paralympic Games in Barcelona, Boldt carried the Canadian flag in the opening ceremonies.

The 2012 Paralympic Games start on August 29.

Confirmation of Injury to Emily Batty

On Tuesday August 7, Canadian Mountain Biker Emily Batty fell during training. She was then transported to the official Polyclinic of the Olympic village in London, UK. She then went through medical tests including  X-Ray, with the results showed a fracture in her right clavicle.

At the polyclinic, Batty was evaluated by a team of collaborating experts, led by Dr. Bruce Davidson. After a series and Strength and Conditioning as well as Range In Motion tests which she successfully passed, Emily was then given the option to compete. After two days of testing on the course and extensive physical therapy from Cycling Canada Physiotherapist Tara Baker, Emily Batty then made the decision to race the Women’s Olympic Mountain Bike event.

On Wednesday August 8, she did not ride her bike on the course, but instead worked on conditioning.

On Thursday August 9, Emily rode her bike on the course for the first time since the crash. She informed the coaching and managing staff that she felt little pain, and at that point she made the decision to stay on the start list for the Olympic Mountain bike race.

Cycling Canada deployed all efforts necessary to support Emily. She was evaluated by two Canadian doctors,  and was treated by Cycling Canada physiotherapist Tara Baker.

We are very impressed by Emily’s work ethic, her determination and her fight to represent her country at the highest sporting stage, the Olympic Games. She’s has always been a fierce competitor, and her feat of completing the Olympic race is a testament to that determination.

Junior Men Road World Championship – Selection Pool

Cycling Canada is pleased to announce the Junior men named to the selection pool for the 2012 UCI Road World Championships, set for September 15 to 23 in Limburg, Netherlands.

The Junior Men’s pool is headlined by Canadian Champions Christopher Prendergast and Nigel Ellsay, who took the Canadian titles in the road race and time trial respectively.

From this pool, the final selection for World Championships will be made. The number of riders is yet to be confirmed by the UCI.

CANADIAN CYCLISTS BALANCE COMPETITION WITH GIVING BACK

Canadian cyclists are raising money for their sport as they get set to ride

August 7, 2012:  The different Canadian Cycling teams will be raising money for all competitive cyclists as they pedal to the medal at international cycling races across the World in 2012.

Each Canadian cycling team – Road, BMX, Mountain Biking and Track – has set up its own “Giving Group” on a new online charitable platform called Chimp. And within each of these Giving Groups, the teams are asking friends, family, fans and bike enthusiasts to join. Group members can leave comments for the team’s cyclists, and they can donate as well. All the money raised in the groups will be given to Cycling Canada.

“I wouldn’t be competing in the Olympics if it weren’t for the support of the Cycling Canada. So I’m glad I have this kind of platform to give back. I hope people join and support the BMX Giving Group, so the Cycling Canada can in turn support other BMXers,” says BMX rider Tory Nyhaug, ranked fifth in the World as he prepares for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Greg Mathieu, Chief Executive Officer of Cycling Canada: “We couldn’t be more proud of our athletes. Not only of the caliber of athleticism they hold, but also the strength of character they each have. They all want to support the cycling community as much as it has supported them. Their success helps build the sport of cycling in so many ways.”

There’s an added bonus: Every dollar given to the teams’ Giving Groups will be matched by North Vancouver’s John Henry Bikes. “We really want to help youth discover the sport, and the best way to do that is to support the sport – support Cycling Canada. We also want to reward and recognize those who are representing our sport and our country on the world stage,” says John Henry Bikes CEO Willie Cromack.
