WORLD TOUR SVEIN TUFT AND CHRISTIAN MEIER HEADLINE CANADA’S TEAM AT TOUR DE BEAUCE

Tuft, Meier, Stuart Wight, Nic Hamilton, Michael Woods and Casey Roth to represent Canada at famed Tour de Beauce

(Ottawa, ON – June 8, 2012) Cycling Canada Cyclisme is proud to announce the line-up that will represent Canada at the 2012 Tour de Beauce, and Canada will be stacked up with star-power with two riders from the professional World Tour.

The team will be directed by Steve Rover, the 1996 Canadian Road Champion and an organizer of the 2012 COLD-FX Canadian Road Championships, which will be held the following week in Lac Mégantic.

The team includes Svein Tuft, the seven-time Canadian TT Champion, fresh off the Giro d’Italia racing with World Tour team Orica-GreenEDGE, where he finished in the Top 10 of the final stage Time Trial.

“Beauce has always been a special race for us Canadian riders. It’s a race that has helped all of us progress to the next level and given us a chance to race at a very high calibre on difficult courses on our home soil. So it seems like a good tradition to be able to come back and race here with the national team where I had my 1st opportunity to experience Beauce in 2001. It was definitely an eye opener for me then and I look forward to racing in this year’s edition,” said Tuft.

Tuft has had an illustrious professional cycling career, and excels in the Individual Time Trial. In the event, he finished second at the 2008 UCI Road World Championships, and 13th in the time trial at the 2011 UCI Road World Championship in Copenhagen.

At the 2011 IMMUNITY-FX Canadian Road Championships in Ontario, Tuft triumphed in both elite races, winning the titles in both the road race and time trial, competing with Team SpiderTech powered by C10.

In Beauce last season, Tuft won the individual time trial as well as stage 6 to finish in third place of the General Classification.

Tuft will be joined by long-time friend and current teammate Christian Meier, who was also recently racing the Giro d’Italia. Since turning professional in 2008 with World Tour Team Garmin-Slipstream, Meier spent three seasons on the World Tour. Last year at the 2011 IMMUNITY-FX Canadian Road Championships in Burlington, ON, Meier was second in the individual time trial, behind Tuft.

The Canadian team will be complemented by Stuart Wight (CR4C Roanne), Nic Hamilton (Jelly Belly Cycling), Michael Woods (Stevens Racing p/b The Cyclery) and Casey Roth (Ride with Rendall Cycling Team).

The Tour de Beauce starts Tuesday June 12, and runs through Sunday June 17.

OLYMPIC SELECTION POOL ANNOUNCED FOR WOMEN’S ROAD CYCLING

(Ottawa, ON – June 6, 2012) Cycling Canada Cyclisme is proud to unveil the list of athletes who have qualified for the 2012 Olympic Selection Pool for women’s road cycling. This short-list of riders will be drawn upon for the 2012 Olympic Cycling Team.

“This is an incredibly exciting time for cycling in Canada. The air is supercharged going into the Olympics and with that we will have a world-class team adding to the atmosphere,” said Denise Kelly, coach of the women’s program at Cycling Canada Cyclisme. “This is a very talented pool of athletes to choose from with the goal of reaching the podium.  I feel very honoured to be the coach of the women’s team.”

Through the UCI Qualification process, Canada qualified three spots for the women’s Olympic road race and two spots of the women’s Olympic time trial race. According to UCI regulations, an athlete who wishes to participate in the time trial must have started the Olympic road race.

Athletes in the Olympic selection pool have all qualified as a result of their performances since the UCI Qualification window has been opened. As per the approved Selection guidelines, the High Performance advisory committee of Cycling Canada Cyclisme, comprised of many specialists, will gather and proceed with the selection of athletes who will be nominated to the 2012 Canadian Olympic Team to represent Canada at the upcoming Olympic Games in London, UK.

FAST AND FEMALE COMING TO HARDWOOD CANADA CUP!

We are happy to invite your athletes on June 2nd, Canadian National Mountain Bike team members Amanda Sin (SCOTT-3Rox Racing) and Catherine Vipond (Norco Factory Team) will host 45 female youth riders between grades 4 to 12 for a morning of inspiration at Hardwood Ski and Bike. This will mark Fast and Female’s second mountain biking event ever.

“I love being a part of Fast and Female and seeing girls excited about sports,” said Sin a resident of Collingwood, ON who took part in the inaugural Fast and Female cycling event held in Canmore last year. “Participating in sport and being an athlete has had such a positive impact in my life. I want to pass that on,” added the cyclist who finished third at the Pan Am Games in 2011.

The Fast and Female Mountain Bike held at Hardwood Ski and Bike will run from 9:15 to 12:00 and include team building activities, inspirational presentations, zumba dancing, mountain biking, and autographs. The activity will be happening in tandem with the Trek Store Canada Cup featuring eight hundred participants who are expected to compete on Sunday June 3rd.

What is Fast and Female ? Fast and Female is a not-for-profit society started in 2005 by Chandra Crawford, the 2006 Olympic gold medalist in cross-country skiing. The organization’s mission is to support, motivate, inspire, and empower girls to stick to sports and the healthy lifestyle. Fast and Female fulfills its mission of “Empowerment Through Sport” by hosting fun-filled, non-competitive initiatives all across North-America aimed at exposing young female athletes to inspiring female Olympians and elite level athletes. RYDER HESJEDAL WINS GIRO D’ITALIA

(Ottawa, ON – May 27, 2012) Canadian cyclist Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Barracuda) won the 2012 Giro d’Italia, becoming the first Canadian to ever win a cycling Grand Tour, a historic accomplishment on Sunday.

Canadian legend Steve Bauer, current owner of Team SpiderTech powered by C10, was the closest Canadian to a podium at a Grand Tour, finishing fourth at the 1988 Tour de France.

Ryder Hesjedal : “I had to fight for this Giro d’Italia. As we got off the mountain in the helicopter and as descended to Milan yesterday, I knew I still had a shot. I felt incredible on bike pre-riding and knew I could do it in the time trial.”

“The first day I pulled on the pink jersey I knew I was good and had accomplished something great. That made me go even harder. Getting compliments from my rivals gave me even more confidence. Hat’s off to them, they’re all great champions but once we were in the third week and I was doing the rides I was doing, I knew it was possible.”

“My success is down to consistent hard work and by improving a little all the time. I think I showed my ability in the 2010 Tour de France. I had problems in the 2011 Tour but I still showed my ability in the third week. I got the opportunity to focus 100% on the Giro d’Italia this year and the team said I was the designated leader. It doesn’t happen often in a rider’s career to be leader in such a prestigious event, so I came with good legs and wanted to do my very best. The team was excellent and gave it everything. I won this race day after day, by doing my best. That’ what it takes.”

On his Garmin-Barracuda teammates: “The guys were even more believing than me at some points. They gave everything. They especially proud of me and I’m especially proud of what they for me. It was great to be on the podium together as the super team of the Giro d’Italia. It’s going to be a good night…”

On the impact of his Giro d’Italia victory in Canada: “The support for me back home has been unreal. I saw one tweet about a guy going into Canada Tire and asking for the pink Garmin-Barracuda jersey…. I think people now know what’s going on at home. I think they appreciate the Giro d’Italia and I hope my win will help Canadian cycling go a long way.”

CROTEAU AND GAUTIER MAINTAIN PERFECT SEASON; WELDON/BESSETTE AGAIN ON THE PODIUM

(Rome, ITA – May 27, 2012) Canada Para-cyclists Marie-Ève Croteau and Shelley Gautier both won their respective tricycle road races at the 2012 Para-cycling World Cup in Rome, Italy, and remain undefeated after six races this season.

Croteau, 33, who became two-time World Champion and World Cup winner in her first ever season as a competitive para-cyclist, has not lost a single race so far in two consecutive seasons at World Cups or World Championships, for both the road race and time trial. In 2011, the Québec city resident won all three races she participated in, as well as the World Championships. This season, she remains perfect in six races, including the P1 races Défi-sportif and Trofeo Internazionale Piacenza.

The same can be said for Gautier, 43, a pioneer in tricycle who has for many years been riding solo around the globe, advocating for more participants in her category. Gautier, who lives in Toronto, now has a Canadian partner in crime as she rolls along to international races

Gautier is also enjoying significant success on the international scene. In the last two World Cup season, she stood on the highest step of the podium in all races, winning both titles at the UCI World Championships.

In Rome, the Canadian tandem of Robbi Weldon, 36, and Lyne Bessette, 36, rode away to the third place in the women’s tandem race. The four-time gold medallist tandem at the 2011 Parapan-American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Robbi Weldon and Lyne Bessette sprinted to the third place, edged by the victorious tandem of Joleen Hakker and Samantha Van Steenis and second-place tandem from Poland, comprised of Iwona Podkoschielna and Aleksandra Wnuczek.

In the C categories, Jaye Milley was the highest ranked Canada rider, in the C1 category, taking fifth place.

MARK LEDO, ROBERT LABBÉ ON THE PODIUM AT PARA-CYCLING WORLD CUP IN ROME

(Rome, ITA – May 26, 2012) The 2012 UCI Para-cycling World Cup continued today in Rome, Italy and two Canadian para-cyclists stepped on the podium as the road races were held for the hand cyclists.

Ontario’s Mark Ledo (Maple, ON), a two-time bronze medallist at UCI Road World Championships, sprinted to the victory in the men’s H2 race, edging his closest competitor at the finish line.

“It was a good race today. I tried my best to create opportunities, but I wasn’t able to break away,” said Ledo. “I then relied on my sprinting abilities, and it worked! I am very happy with this result.”

Robert Labbé, the 2009 World Time Trial Champion, took the silver medal in the H1 race, crossing the line only three seconds behind winner Christophe Hindriq of Belgium. Labbé finished fourth in yesterday’s time trial.

Labbé was pleased with his efforts, despite the mechanical issues: “I started really well, but I had a loss of energy. I was able to manage my efforts to continue, especially since the Irael rider was not far behind. I gave all I had in me, and held on to the end. I started the race with confidence, and was expecting a strong result. I am very pleased.»

Labbé spent most of the day in a breakaway with Koby Lion of Israel, but was eventually chased down by Hindricq of Belgium. In the last kilometers, both Labbé and Hindricq attacked and made for an exciting sprint finish, which Hindrik won. Labbé could have been a strong contender for the victory, but had no brakes left in the last two laps, on a very technical course.

CANADA GRABS THREE WINS OF OPENING TIME TRIAL AT UCI WORLD CUP IN ROME

(Rome, ITA – May 25, 2012) The 2012 UCI Para-cycling World Cup started today in Rome, Italy with a time trial race, and Canada’s para-cyling team wasted no time to show they are in top form for this Paralympic season, grabbing three victories.

The tandem of Robbi Weldon and Lyne Bessette, as well tricyclists Marie-Ève Croteau and Shelley Gautier all came out victorious on this opening day.

Racing the historic city of Rome, in Italy, the Weldon/Bessette tandem took the victory in the time trials, completing the 20.8-kilometre course with the fastest time of 25:59.72 The powerful duo crossed the line with a 10 second lead over second place, the tandem from Ireland. The Canadian tandem of Geneviève Ouellette and Emilie Roy placed eighth.

“Many thanks to the staff, everything was set-up for a nice race. The winter training brought a good start to the season, and the Tour of Belgium was great to prepare for this event,” said Robbi Weldon, from Rome.

In the men’s tandem race, Daniel Chalifour and Alexandre Cloutier narrowly missed the podium, three seconds behind the third place, to take the fourth place.

In the tricycle races, both Shelley Gautier and Marie-Ève Croteau won their respective 10.4-km races, remaining undefeated so far this season. Both riders wore the coveted Rainbow jersey as the reigning World Champions in the Time trial, while Croteau also boasts the title of World Cup Champion to her résumé.

“A step towards achieving my goal for the season: the London Games. Following a good training this past winter and a good race here in Italy, I find my progress continues, and I’m glad,” said Marie-Ève Croteau, who is a strong contender for a medal at the upcoming Paralympic Games, this summer. “We should also mention the numerous advices from my coach Eric Van Den Eynde and Sébastien Travers, as well as from my teammates and support staff, either the mechanics or physiotherapists.”

In the women’s C4 race, Marie-Claude Molnar posted a time of 23:25.39 as the lone competitor in her category.

AMELIA WALSH MOVES ON TO SUPERCROSS FINALS AT BMX WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

(Birmingham, GBR – May 25, 2012) Amelia Walsh was the lone Canadian rider who moved on to the Elite BMX SuperCross rounds at the BMX World Championships in Birmingham, Great Britain.

Walsh qualified with the 44th best time of the women’s qualifying rounds. Reigning Canadian Champion Sabrina Millman, who suffered a minor injury on Wednesday, did not advance.

In the men’s round, Connor McCormack, Canada’s lone rider in the Elite category, did not advance, posting the 82nd fastest time.

In the junior races, two Canadian men qualified for the final rounds. Corey Walsh qualified with the 33rd best time of the day, while James Palmer posted the 52nd best time.

The BMX Supercross Finals will be held tomorrow.

MOUNTAIN BIKE CANADA CUP EVENT IN CANMORE CANCELLED

(Ottawa, ON – May 25, 2012) Cycling Canada Cyclisme is forced to cancel the 2012 Mountain Bike XCO Canada Cup event in Canmore.

Cycling Canada Cyclisme worked with stakeholders and organizers from Western Canada to investigate alternative options for this event, but ultimately it has been unable to find a solution acceptable to replace the event.

The 2012 Canada Cup XCO Series will be a three-event series, with the best two of three races counting towards the overall ranking.

We are looking forward to 2013, and bring the series back up to a five-event series, with events in Eastern and Western Canada.

CANADA SWEEPS OPENING PROLOGUE AT EXERGY TOUR

(Ottawa, ON – May 24, 2012) The Canadian cyclists are on fire at the inaugural 2012 Exergy Tour, an important women’s road cycling event.

Canadian riders finished 1-2-3 in the 3.1-kilometre opening prologue, with Tara Whitten (Tibco-To-The-Top) taking the yellow jersey. National team rider Gillian Carleton took the second place, while Clara Hughes (Specialized Lululemon) placed third.

“It was such a strong field today. Gillian is a strong member of the Women’s Team Pursuit on the track, and I am very excited for the Olympic Games coming up this summer. I am thrilled that we’re both in top form. We are only getting stronger.”

Added Whitten: “It’s pretty unusual for us to have great crowds. It’s exciting. The first comment I got from one of my teammate coming back was that the crowds were amazing, and it pushes you to give everything you have in there. We have a really strong team here and we are excited for the days to come.”

The 2012 Exergy Tour is a five-day professional stage race for women’s cycling in Idaho. Tomorrow will feature the second day of racing, a 123.8-kilometre race in Nampa.
