OLYMPIC SELECTION POOL ANNOUNCED FOR MEN’S ROAD CYCLING

(Ottawa, ON – May 11, 2012) The Canadian Cycling Association is proud to unveil the list of athletes who have qualified for the 2012 Olympic Selection Pool for men’s road cycling, a short-list group of riders from which the 2012 Olympic Cycling Team will be selected.

“Canadian cycling has never been this healthy, with strong depth. We have in front of us a talented group of road cyclists to analyze. Our discussions and final decision will certainly revolve around our best chance to win a medal in London, and help achieve our goals,” said Gord Fraser, Manager of the men’s program at the Canadian Cycling Association.

“With a record number of Canadian riders competing in professional cycling either at the WorldTour or the pro-continental levels, we are confident we will have a competitive cyclist selected to represent Canada at the Olympic Games,” added Jacques Landry, Director of High Performance at the Canadian Cycling Association.

Through the UCI Qualification process, Canada qualified one spot for the men’s Olympic road race and one spot of the men’s Olympic time trial. According to UCI regulations, an athlete who wishes to participate in the time trial must start the road race.

The women’s selection pool will be announced on or around June 6 as the UCI qualification window is still open to this day.

Athletes in the Olympic selection pool have all qualified as a result of their performances since the UCI Qualification Window has been opened. As per the approved Selection guidelines, the High Performance advisory committee of the Canadian Cycling Association, comprised of many specialists, will gather and proceed with the selection of athletes who will be nominated to the 2012 Canadian Olympic Team to represent Canada at the upcoming Olympic Games in London, UK.

LARGER CREW OF CANADIAN MOUNTAIN BIKERS TO COMPETE IN NEXT TWO WORLD CUPS

Next two World Cups are important events in the UCI Qualification process

(Ottawa, ON – May 10, 2012) A larger crew of Canadian mountain bikers will be racing the next two UCI Worlds Cup events, hoping to score some very precious points for Canada in the UCI Olympic qualification process.

There are two events left on the Olympic qualifying calendar for the 2012 Olympic Games: UCI World Cups in Nove Mesto Na Morave, Czech Republic, and in La Bresse, France.

Canada is ranked comfortably in first place of the women’s UCI Olympic Nations Ranking, and in 13th place of the men’s ranking with 1633 points. According to the UCI Olympic selection protocol, countries ranked 6-13 will receive two spots on the start line of the Men’s Olympic race, while Canada has secured the maximum two spots for the women’s Olympic race.

Catharine Pendrel of Kamloops, BC (Team Luna Pro) is the reigning World Champion in the discipline, and is currently holding the World Cup Leader jersey, sitting on top of the 2012 UCI World Cup standings. Emily Batty of Brooklin, ON (Team Subaru-Trek) is sitting in fourth place of the UCI World Cup standings after a medal-winning performance in Pietermaritzburg, while Marie-Hélène Prémont of Château Richer, QC, is ranked in 19th place.

A total of 18 Canadian athletes will race these World Cups, either representing the Canadian National Teams or their respective professional cycling teams, in the Elite and U23 categories. UCI Olympic qualifications points are awarded to the nation of the competing riders in the elite category.

The UCI World Cup in Nove Meso Na Morave will be held from May 11-13, while the UCI World Cup in France will be held the following weekend, from May 18 to 20.

GRAND PRIX CYCLISTE AND CHRONO GATINEAU TO FEATURE WORLD’S BEST WOMEN CYCLISTS

May long weekend becomes cycling festival in Gatineau

(Ottawa, ON – May 09, 2012) The Canadian Cycling Association is pleased to announce the Canadian squad which will compete for the Canadian National Team at the upcoming 2012 Grand Prix cycliste Gatineau Hydro-Québec and Chrono Gatineau Rona, prominent UCI-sanctioned women’s cycling road and time trial races on Canadian soil.

On Saturday May 19, some of the world’s best riders will race the Chrono Gatineau Rona, an international individual time trial race held on a technical 19.6-kilometre course. Canada’s national team will be represented by 2012 Pan-American Time Trial silver medallist Rhae Shaw (Exergy Twenty12), two-time 2011 Canadian Junior Champion Annie Ewart (Optum Pro Cycling-Kelly Benefit Strategies) of Victoria, BC, as well as 2010 Canadian Time Trial Champion Julie Beveridge (Vienne-Futuroscope) of Calgary, AB.

The traditional mass-start road race will be held on Monday, May 21 and will showcase some of the world’s top women’s cycling teams, such as Specialized-Lululemon, TIBCO- To The Top, Optum Pro Cycling and Specialized-Mazda-SGC, which include some of Canada’s best such as Clara Hughes (Glen Sutton, QC), Tara Whitten (Edmonton, AB), Joëlle Numainville (Montreal, QC), Véronique Fortin (Montreal, QC), Denise Ramsden (Yellowknife, NWT), Leah Kirchmann (Winnipeg, MB) and Lex Albrecht (Barrie, ON) just to name a few.

Canada’s National team in the road race will be represented by Shaw, Beveridge, Karol-Ann Canuel (Amos, QC/Vienne Futuroscope), Candice Vermeulen (St. Catharines, ON/Invita – FCV) and Audrey Labrie (Laval, QC), a seven-time National junior champion in track cycling and silver medallist at the 2012 junior Pan-American Championships.

Riders in the road race will complete 13 laps of a 10.18-km course for a total distance of 134 kilometres.

In 2011, Clara Hughes won the Chrono Gatineau Rona time trial with the Canadian National Team, while Italian veteran cyclist Georgia Bronzini took the victory in the Grand Prix Cycliste Gatineau Hydro-Québec, which ended in a bunch sprint.

2012 COLD-FX CANADIAN ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS PRESENTED BY CANADIAN TIRE PROMISES TO BE EXCITING

Lac Mégantic ready to welcome Canada’s top road cyclists

(Lac Mégantic, QC – May 8, 2012) The 2012 COLD-FX Canadian Road Championships presented by Canadian Tire promises to be very exciting this summer, with the top cyclists converging onto Lac Mégantic, QC to race for the ultimate Canadian honour, the coveted Red and White Maple Leaf jersey.

The 2012 edition of the event will be held from June 21nd to July 1, featuring the traditional road race, the individual time trials, and the always exciting criterium. The event is expected to bring over 500 riders of all ages, from juniors to masters, including para-cycling.

“We are extremely pleased with the efforts that have been put forward by the organizing team, who are one of Canada’s top race organizers. Once again this year, the riders will have a fun and challenging course to showcase their skills, for all road disciplines,” said Mathieu Boucher, Director of development. “Preparations are well underway, and we are pleased these Championships will be under the direction of this organizing committee for three years in a row.”

The Canadian Championships are an important opportunity for young riders to test their skills against World Tour and Pro-continental riders, and to grow within the Canadian competitive cycling scene.

Adds Boucher: “The event is a critical step in our Long Term Athlete Development model. The up-and coming riders may have the exciting opportunity to ride against top Canadian riders from the WorldTour, such as Svein Tuft (Orica GreenEDGE), Dominique Rollin (FDJ-BigMat), Christian Meier (Orica GreenEDGE), Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Barracuda) and Michael Barry (Sky ProCycling), just to name a few.”

In addition to the traditional road races, the 2012 COLD-FX Canadian Road Championships presented by Canadian Tire will host the Canadian Sprint Challenge for the first time at Canadian Championships. The country’s top sprinters will go head to head, in heats, on an 800m course, in a single elimination format. The top rider along with the Elite men criterium will earn their ticket to the Pro Sprint Challenge at the 2012 Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec, this upcoming September

In 2011, Canada’s only pro-continental squad Team SpiderTech powered by C10 swept the men’s races winning both titles in the elite and U23 races. On the women’s side, multiple-Olympic medallist Clara Hughes (Team Specialized-Lululemon) of Glen Sutton, QC took the time trial title in her comeback year while Véronique Fortin (TIBCO-To The Top) of Montréal, QC won the women’s road race.

The organizing committee is led by the Francis Rancourt, the same organizer as the popular Tour de Beauce, Denis Bolduc, organizer of the 1992 Canadian Championships and Steve Rover, the 1996 Canadian Road Champion. The 2013 and 2014 editions of the Championships will be held in St-Georges-de-Beauce, QC, and organized by the same organizing committee.

The event will take place in beautiful Lac Mégantic, and should bring a significant economic impact to Québec’s Eastern Townships.

2012 COLD-FX CANADIAN ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS
The COLD-FX Canadian Road Championships is Canada’s top domestic road cycling event. WORLD CLASS MOUNTAIN BIKERS AMANDA SIN AND CATHERINE VIPOND TO BRING FAST AND FEMALE MESSAGE TO ONTARIO

Barrie, ON (May 7, 2012) – On June 2nd, Canadian National Mountain Bike team members Amanda Sin (SCOTT-3Rox Racing) and Catherine Vipond (Norco Factory Team) will host 45 female youth riders between grades 4 to 12 for a morning of inspiration at Hardwood Ski and Bike. This will mark Fast and Female’s second mountain biking event ever.

“I love being a part of Fast and Female and seeing girls excited about sports,” said Sin a resident of Collingwood, ON who took part in the inaugural Fast and Female cycling event held in Canmore last year. “Participating in sport and being an athlete has had such a positive impact in my life. I want to pass that on,” added the cyclist who finished third at the Pan Am Games in 2011.

The Fast and Female Mountain Bike held at Hardwood Ski and Bike will run from 9:15 to 12:00 and include team building activities, inspirational presentations, zumba dancing, mountain biking, and autographs. The activity will be happening in tandem with the Trek Store Canada Cup featuring eight hundred participants who are expected to compete on Sunday June 3rd.

Started in 2005 by cross country skiing gold medalist Chandra Crawford, Fast and Female is intently focused on delivering programming to inspire and motivate girls stick to sports. Research shows that girls are six times more likely to drop out of sports than boys.

“Growing women’s cycling is a focus at the forefront of the Ontario Cycling Association’s mandate,” said Brendan Arnold, the OHPSI Head Coach. “In collaboration with the Canadian Cycling Association, we are thrilled to support Fast and Female with their camp at Hardwood Ski and Bike.”

CANADIAN BMX SQUAD READY TO TAKE ON THE WORLD

UCI BMX World Championships held in Birmingham, GBR from May 25-27

(Ottawa, ON – May 4, 2012) With less than three months to go before the 2012 Olympic Games, the Canadian BMX team is ready to rock at the 2012 UCI BMX World Championships.

The Canadian team is vying to secure a second spot for Canada at the Olympic Games, and the 2012 UCI BMX World Championships will be a critical event to achieve the goal.

“Our men and women are ready to deliver some great performances. Tory [Nyhaug] is consistently in the Top 5 at UCI Supercross events, in both BMX and Time Trial races,” said Adam Muys, head coach of the Canadian BMX squad. “The program is going in the right direction and with the recent successes of Tory at various events across the World, we see the tide changing with lots of positives around the Canadian BMX program.”

The UCI BMX World Championships will be held in Birmingham, Great Britain, from May 25-27, 2012.
The World Championships will feature racing for World titles in both BMX and Time Trials, for men and women in the elite and junior categories.

The Time Trial races for all categories, including the TT Superfinals, will be held on Friday, May 25, followed by the BMX World Championships rounds on Saturday May 26.

Prior to the UCI World Championships, the Canadian squad will have one more opportunity to score some precious Olympic qualifications points at the third event of the 2012 BMX SuperCross Tour in Papendal, Netherlands May 12-13.

The venue for the 2012 UCI BMX World Championships will be indoor, at the National Indoor Arena (NIA). The NIA is one of the busiest, large scale indoor sporting and entertainment venues in Europe. Since opening in 1991, it has welcomed visitors to over 30 different sports, as well as an extensive variety of entertainment and music.

(Ottawa, ON – May 3, 2012) The Canadian Cycling Association is proud to unveil the list of athletes who have qualified for the 2012 Olympic Selection Pool for track cycling, a short-list group of riders from which the 2012 Olympic Team nominations will be drawn upon.

For the 2012 Olympic Games, Canada has qualified in both men and women Omnium events, the women’s team pursuit, the women’s sprint and keirin, and the men’s keirin.

Jacques Landry, Director of High performance and Team Leader of the 2012 Canadian team heading to London, is confident the team will be strong contenders for medals in London. “Our team is proud. Proud about the successes we’ve had around the world, and proud to represent Canada in doing so. We have covered all our bases into our preparations for the Games, and invested energy and resources in the track program, and we have clearly seen the return on those investments these past two seasons.”

Head Coach of the Canadian Track Cycling Team, Richard Wooles: “It’s great to see such a strong team be announced to the pool. Our Canadian athletes are determined to succeed in London. We put a plan in place four years ago, and we are starting to see some of the benefit of the great support provided. CANADIAN JUNIOR ROAD CYCLISTS SHINE IN BELGIUM

Ben Perry wins opening Kermess, Top 5 in InterClub

(Ottawa, ON – May 3, 2012) The Canadian Junior Men’s squad landed in Belgium last week and since enjoyed unprecedented success, finishing both race with a Canadian presence in the Top 5, including a victory by Benjamin Perry.

On a 20-lap, 3.6km circuit consisting of a mixed concrete blocks, bricks, and cobbled climbs with a smooth paved descent, the Canadian U19 men’s team clearly made their presence felt in Belgium.

After having a presence in all of the early moves, a two-person group consisting of Benjamin Perry (St. Catharines, ON) and Quinten Hermans (Young Telenet Fidea, 4th at 2012 Cyclo-cross World Championships) established a breakaway, steadily increasing their gap throughout the duration of the race.

With the rest of his Canadian team-mates protecting his lead, Perry comfortably went on to win the two-person sprint at the finish line, taking the victory. Behind, the Team Canada riders all placed well in their respective groups.

U19 Canadian Mens team continue their strong showing at the Inter Club level.
May 1 is when Belgium celebrates Labour Day, and what better way to celebrate than having a cycling road race. The ‘Inter Club’ level events are a series of Belgium Cup races held over the season. Along with the Canadian National squad lined up at the start line were many local Belgian and Dutch teams, which included the presence of New Zealand’s Hayden McCormick, a Track World Championships medallist.

The course was held on the flat roads south of the industrial city of Antwerpen, the second largest sea port in Europe and was comprised of five laps of twenty kilometers. By European standards, the roads were wide, making the chances of a long breakaway difficult.

The Canadian squad did a very good job of representing the National colors at the front of the peloton, The lead group to open up a significant lead included Canada’s Benjamin Perry, winner of the previous race. Building up a maximum lead of fifty five seconds the group was absorbed by the chasing peloton after fifty kilometers of freedom.

When Hayden McCormick attacked with ten kilometers remaining in the event, only eight athletes were able to respond, which included Canada’s Ben Perry, who was fourth on the line.

“I’m glad that I went for it,” said Perry. “What a great day and a great race.”

Behind, his team-mates did a fantastic job of shutting down the chasing efforts, particularly Ben Chartrand. Max Toeldte and Brandon Etzel gained valuable experience in the elbow-to-elbow nature of bunch sprints at this level.

The Canadian junior riders will race twice more this weekend, the Wortegem Inter Club and the Overijse Kermess.

ROAD RACES CONCLUDE PARACYCLING PORTION AT 2012 DÉFI-SPORTIF

Croteau, Ledo and Weldon/Bessette repeat winners in road race; Surprise in C men

(Montreal, QC – April 28, 2012) Despite racing in the tough conditions highlighted by yet more cold weather, Marie-Ève Croteau (Québec, QC), Mark Ledo (Maple, ON) and the tandem of Robbi Weldon and Lyne Bessette (Knowlton, QC) have all won their second race in as many days as the road races were the featured events at the 2012 Défi Sportif Alter-Ego, on Ile Notre-Dame in Montréal, QC.

Croteau, who is enjoying tremendous success since starting her competitive career on a tricycle last season, proved that her winter training is paying off, winning the tricycle race in a sprint against an American man to grab her second straight victory this season. Louis-Albert Corriveau took the third place, while both Shelley Gautier (Toronto, ON) and Dominique Mainguy (Québec, QC) were involved in a crash on the start line and couldn’t recover in time to catch the lead group.

In the handcycle H2-4 category, Mark Ledo won after a long solo breakaway, crossing the finish line with a time of 1:03:58. Teammate Mark Beggs took the second place, in dramatic fashion sprinting against an American rider William Lachenaur. Both Beggs and Lachenaur posted the same time, 2:37 behind the winning time.

In the H1 men/H1-3 women’s race, Robbert Labbé (Québec, QC) took the second place, while Myriam Adam crossed the finish line in third place.

In the C1-3 race, Paralympic hall of famer Arnold Boldt took the third place in the peloton sprint, followed by Matthieu Parent in fifth. In the C4 race, Sébastien Bouchard (Québec, QC) won the race with a time of 1:48.11. Bouchard took off in a solo breakaway, and never looked back. Peter King took the second place in the chase, while Eric Bourgeault showed a lot of class to allow King the second place since he had done most of the work in the chase. Both finished 22 seconds behind Bouchard.

Marie-Claude Molnar took the silver medal in the women’s C1-5 race. Molnar conceded the victory to her competitor Patricia Collins from the United States of America in the final sprint. They both posted a time of 1:24:06.

In the tandem race, the Parapanamerican champion tandem of Robbi Weldon and Lyne Bessette took a convincing victory, winning by over two minutes over the established tandem of Geneviève Ouellette and Émilie Roy, both of Québec, QC. Melissa Boisvert took the third place, riding with her new pilot Joanie Laflamme. In the men’s race, the newly formed tandem of William Stanley and Pierre-Olivier Boily won the race, edging Daniel Chalifour and Alexandre Cloutier by two seconds at the finish line.

The Canadian Para-Cycling Team will now turn to the 2012 UCI World Cup season, which ends with the World Cup Finals in Baie-Comeau, QC, from July 7-10.
