FRIGID NIGHT IN MONTREAL FOR THE TIME TRIAL RACE AT DÉFI-SPORTIF

Dominique Mainguy impresses National Team on very first cycling race

(Montreal, QC – April 27, 2012) The 2012 Para-cycling road season has officially started with the presentation of the time trial race at the Défi Sportif Alter-Ego, a race which went ahead despite frigid temperatures as Montreal is hit with a cold front.

Riders from several countries converged at the Gilles Villeneuve racetrack for the night races, braving extremely cold temperatures.

Rising star and Paralympic games hopeful Marie-Ève Croteau of Québec, QC and Shelley Gautier of Toronto, ON both two-time World Champions, rode to the first and second place respectively in the tricycle category. Both riders were riding on their new custom-built bikes for the very first time in a race, thanks to a partnership with Cycles Marinoni.

Also in the tricycle race was up-and-coming Dominique Mainguy of Québec, QC, a new rider who raced for the first time of her career. Mainguy, who swam recreationally to maintain form, contacted the Canadian Cycling Association last fall about participating in cycling races this summer. After a winter spent training on a trainer bike, Mainguy rode for the first time on the road three weeks ago. After a few outings, she opted to race on a more stable tricycle. Today, Mainguy placed fourth and showed she can be a contender in international races.

In the handcycling race, Mark Ledo of Maple, ON won the gold medal. Rico Morneau placed third while Mark Beggs took the fourth spot. Robbert Labbé finished in seventh place, and was the fastest of the H1 category.

In the tandem race, it was no surprise to see Thunder Bay’s Robbi Weldon and Lyne Bessette of Knowlton, QC cross the line with the fastest time. The tandem is the world champion in the event, sporting for the first time this season their brand new Rainbow jersey. Daniel Chalifour and Alexandre Cloutier followed with the second fastest time, while the Québec tandem of Geneviève Ouellette and Emilie Roy came third. Making for the first time an appearance on the road after riding track for the last year, the tandem of William Stanley and Pierre-Olivier Boily raced for the first time together in an international road race and placed fourth.

In the standing C category, Matthieu Parent went on to take the second place, followed by Marie-Claude Molnar in third. The Calgary duo of Brayden McDougall and Jaye Milley placed fourth and fifth respectively, followed by Paralympic hall of famer Arnold Boldt in sixth. Eric Bourgeault place 11th.

At this international event, the final raw times are factorized using the same factors to be used at the Paralympic Games, this upcoming summer.

Tomorrow will be held the mass-start road races on the Gilles Villeneuve racetrack.

Fast and Female Partners with the Canadian Cycling Association, the Fédération Québécoise des Sports Cyclistes and Grand Prix Cycliste Gatineau to Inspire Girls on Bikes

Gatineau, QC (April 20, 2012)- Fast and Female is branching out to run the first-ever road cycling event on May 20, 2012. In exactly one month, girls ages 9-19 who are interested in road racing and cycling in general will join Fast and Female ambassadors for a morning of inspiration, fun and activity on two wheels.

Piggy-backed with the Gatineau Grand Prix, the Fast and Female Road Cycling event will run from 9 am to noon and will include a group ride, inspirational talks with ambassadors, dancing and stretching, and finish off with autograph signing. Activities will kick off at the Centre La Génération at 35 Rue Davies in Gatineau.

Ambassadors for this event include National Cycling Team’s Denise Ramsden, Leah Kirchmann, Joëlle Numainville, and Leah Guloien. “We hope that this event will help young girls to see how much fun riding a bike can be and inspire them to stay in sport,” said Ramsden. “This event is a great opportunity for us to give back to a sport that has given us so much.”

The Gatineau Grand Prix is in its third year as a UCI event. Started as a replacement for cancelled races, the race has grown in participation every year and spawned many other events surrounding the races.

For this Olympic year, the GP Cycliste Gatineau Hydro-Québec and the ChronoGatineau – the only two races sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale in Canada – will take place on May 18 to 21 and provide one of the last chances to earn points to qualify for the Games. Thus, these two races will be critically important to the world of women’s cycling. Which is why we made the route longer and tougher, in an effort to make it closer to the one in London. Kirchmann of Winnipeg, MB, came in fourth in last year’s Grand Prix and is hoping to inspire the girls to pursue their own dreams. “I had a lot of opportunities growing up so I want to try and give other girls the chances I had to lead an active lifestyle and be involved in sport.”

Guloien of Port Moody, BC, comes from a running and rowing background and hopes to share her love of sport with others. “Sport has always been a positive and healthy influence, helping me keep a balance with school and other activities.”

Young female cyclists of all abilities are invited to attend the event with their own road or mountain bikes.

“The Canadian Cycling Association is happy to be supporting this activity which encourages physical activity and healthy habits amongst female youth,” said Mathieu Boucher, Director, Development for Canada’s governing body in cycling. “We are aware that in addition to offering outstanding performances, our Canadian athletes are a great source of inspiration and motivation for girls,” he added.

FOUR CANADIAN OFFICIALS SELECTED FOR LONDON 2012

UCI appoints four Canadian commissaires for the 2012 Oympic and Paralympic Games in London

(Ottawa, ON – April 19, 2012) Four Canadian officials, also known as commissaires in the cycling environment, have been selected to work at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London, this summer, recently announced the International Cycling Union (UCI).

Commissaires hold a similar role as judges or referees, ensuring that all the international rules are followed by the competitors, and that the race is fair and safe.

CANADA TO FIELD STRONG TEAM FOR 2012 UCI JUNIOR PAN-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Coach Jeff Ain is confident of strong showing by Canadian junior cyclists

(Ottawa, ON – April 19, 2012) Thanks to the successes of the Canadian Track Cycling team, a whole new generation of cyclists is hitting the tracks in velodromes across the country, and many up and coming cyclists are increasing their participation in track cycling.

As a result of this increase in popularity, Canada now is in a position to enter a highly competitive team, filling the maximum quota of 16 riders for the event.

The 2012 UCI Junior Pan-American Championships will welcome these young up and coming athletes, and Canada will, for the third time in as many years, send a large and strong delegation to Guatemala.

“Eleven of the 16 riders are first year Juniors or Cadets. This is a development project that will be very competitive at these Championships,” said Jeff Ain, a Junior team coach attending the project. “We expect many of these athletes will be on future development projects if they continue to improve. Canada is developing a lot of depth in the Under 19 category, with an eye to the 2015 Pan-American Games in Toronto, as well as for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero and the 2020 Olympic Games.”

Returning athlete in the junior women category to the 2012 Pan American team is Audrey Labrie of Québec, QC, who will be competing in her third UCI Pan-American Championships. “My goals are to make the finals in all the events and come home with three podiums. We have a very strong team and podiums are what we have been training for.”

Second year Cadet Bailin Xie of Ottawa, Ontario is attending her first UCI Pan-American Championships. “My goals is to learn as much as possible. Canada will have a professional and businesslike approach to each event and GOLD medals are within our reach.”

17-year-old Aiden Caves of Vancouver, British Columbia is returning to the Junior Pan Am team for his second year. “Last year I missed out on three medals, finishing just off the podium in fourth place. This will not be happening in 2012. My training and the training of the entire team has been far better than last year and the Camps through the winter have better prepared me for the task at hand, win medals.”

A total of 25 countries of the Americas will be represented at the event, including notable Colombia, Venezuela, and the United States to name just a few strong track nations.

The team spent one week at a training camp in Los Angeles, and will be flying to Guatamala on Friday.

The track events start on Monday, and run through Sunday. Following the track events, both the mass start road race and individual time trial will be showcased.

CANADIAN CYCLING ASSOCIATION WELCOMES HANNAH PARISH TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

(Ottawa, ON – April 17, 2012) The Canadian Cycling Association is pleased to welcome Hannah Parish to its Board of Directors. Hannah is currently Marketing Manager for Specialized Canada where she oversees all aspects of marketing for the company in Canada. She has held marketing and management positions with Novartis Consumer Health and General Mills. Prior to moving to Montreal for her current position she was a member of the FlyGurlz Mountain Bike Club & Team.

Ms. Parish’s appointment to the CCA Board came about due to the resignation of a Board member. The by-laws of the association require the Board to fill the vacancy by appointment.

CCA President John Tolkamp noted that Hannah was coming to the Board at an exciting time in the development of the association. “Hannah’s skill set brings an added dimension to our already strong Board. It is encouraging to have such accomplished professionals offer their time and expertise to the association as we move towards realizing our vision of being a top cycling nation and best in class organization”, said Tolkamp.

As the newest member to the Board, Hannah will be receiving an orientation in advance of the next Board meeting in May and learning more about the main challenges and opportunities facing the organization. In response to her appointment she said: “I am thrilled and honoured to be appointed to the CCA board. I look forward to contributing to the organization’s bright future.”

The position is for the duration of the term concluding at the 2012 Annual General Meeting.

CANADIAN CYCLING ASSOCIATION MOURNS THE PASSING OF RANDY STARKMAN

A true champion of sports passes away at age 51 in Toronto

(Ottawa, ON – April 16, 2012) The Canadian Cycling Association would like to send its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Randy Starkman, a prominent Canadian sports reporter and columnist with the Toronto Star who passed away of pneumonia, in Toronto at age 51.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Randy Starkman, a true champion of amateur sports, a tireless advocate of athletes from all sports in Canada. Randy was always enthusiast in sharing the stories of our athletes. Throughout his illustrious career covering 12 Olympic Games and countless major sport events, Randy built warm relationships with sports administrators and athletes alike in the Canadian Sport Community. He will be missed by all of us,” said Greg Mathieu, Chief Executive Officer and Secretary General of the Canadian Cycling Association.

BACK ON WINNING WAYS: PENDREL WINS WORLD CUP IN HOUFFALIZE

(Houffalize, BEL – April 15, 2012) Canadian Mountain Biker Catharine Pendrel of Kamloops, British Columbia found her winning ways today in the second UCI World Cup of the 2012 season, in Houffalize, Belgium.

Pendrel, the reigning World Champion, finished the 24.44 km course in 1:31:15, with a lead of over 45 seconds on second place Julie Bresset of France.

Emily Batty of Brooklin, ON (Team Subaru-Trek) is continuing on her successful season, taking the seventh place, while Marie-Hélène Prémont of Chateau Richer, QC took the 14th place.

In the men’s race, Geoff Kabush of Courtenay, BC (Team SCOTT-3RoxRacing) finished in 11th place, his top result this season.

FRÉDÉRIQUE TRUDEL COMES 39th AMONG JUNIOR AT WORLD CUP IN HOUFFALIZE

(Houffalize, BEL – April 14, 2012) Mountain biker Frédérique Trudel of Breakeyville, QC, the reigning Canadian Junior Champion, finished 39th in the women junior race at the 2012 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Houffalize, Belgium.

Trudel, who is competing in her first World Cup of the current season, crossed the finish line with a time of 44:05 for the 39th position, showing a 7:27 deficit over winner Margot Moschetti of France, the winner of the event.

Moschetti posted a time of 36:38 for the victory, followed by Lena Putz in second and Sofia Wiedenroth, both German riders.

Today also featured the men and women U23 races, which did not include any Canadian cyclist.

The elite races will be held tomorrow.

TORY NYHAUG GRABS SEVENTH PLACE IN SUPERCROSS AFTER CRASH IN FINAL STRETCH

(Randaberg, NOR – April 14, 2012) BMX rider Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam, BC finished in seventh place in the Supercross Finals on Saturday in Norway in a dramatic final with two crashes, with one including Nyhaug meters before the finish line.

Nyhaug was on his way to a third place, side by side with Liam Phillips of Great Britain, and his first podium on the UCI BMX Supercross Tour. Disaster struck in the final stretch as Nyhaug crashed on the second last jump, only meters before the finish line. Phillips collided with Nyhaug as they were in the final portion of the last turn, and both riders were propelled to the ground, crashing hard at high speed.

“I am really happy about my positioning today, and for the fact that I have been in two finals this year. Of course I am a little bit bummed about the crash in the final straight as it could have been my first career podium,” said Nyhaug.

Nyhaug got up from the crash and finished the race, and has not injured. Nyhaug will pursue Olympic preparations as planned.

Nyhaug easily qualified in the quarterfinals, winning his round, and then went on to take the second place in the semi-final to advance in the final showdown.

American rider Connor Fields, who posted the fastest time in the time trials yesterday, went on to win his third straight Supercross victory. So far in 2012, Fields has not lost a Supercross race nor a Time Trial Superfinals on the UCI BMX Supercross tour, and is enjoying tremendous successes.
