ONTARIO AND QUEBEC VICTORIOUS IN TEAM RELAY AT CANADA GAMES

Relay races featured on second day of Mountain Bike competitions at Canada Games

(Ottawa, ON – August 5, 2013) The Mountain bike athletes took to the course at Mont Bellevue again on Monday to race province against province in the MTB Team Relay. The sun came out for the first full day of the games and welcomed smiles to the faces of the athletes. The mountain bike team relay is comprised of a men’s and women’s relay with each province fielding a team of three riders, each rider completes on lap of the course.

The 5.3km course used for the team relay was a slightly modified version of the course used for the cross country race on Saturday, and featured many of the same technical features as the XCO course.

Six teams took the start to battle it out for the top province. The girls from Quebec set the tone early, attacking hard on the first climb and getting a gap through the first half of the lap, with Ontario hot on their heels.

An untimely flat by Andreane Lanthier-Nadeau (Quebec) allowed Laura Bietola (Ontario) to tag off to Ontario’s second rider Cayley Books with a big gap to second place Manitoba, with their first rider Karlee Gendron handing off to second rider Anna Schappert.  Third after lap 1 was Alberta with Leah Harvey handing off to Sarah Poidevin.

Heading out on the final lap, it was Haley Smith of Ontario heading out with a lead of over two minutes on Manitoba, sending Gendron out as the anchor. Quebec’s Laurence Harvey flew through her lap making up two places to tag off to Quebec’s anchor, Frederique Trudel, 25 seconds down on Manitoba.  Ontario’s Smith rode a strong final leg to earn Ontario their first Cycling gold of the Games winning by over 3 minutes. Manitoba took the sprint for second and Quebec finishing third.

Team Ontario Apprentice Coach Jenny Trew commented: “I’m really proud of the women and how each of them rode the relay. They were focused and inspired to win today as a team and it showed.”

The men’s relay saw 11 teams take the start with high expectations being place on the team from Québec, following their 1-2-4 finish in the cross country race on the weekend. Quebec’s Leandre Bouchard made the home province intentions clear right from the start, attacking up the first hill, and opening a gap over Ontario’s Mitch Bailey. Bouchard handed off to Jeremy Martin with a 25 second lead over Ontario’s Steven Noble, while BC came in third with Evan Guthrie tagging off to Rhys Verner.

On the second lap, Martin continued to build Québec’s lead handing off to their anchor Antoine Caron with a 45-second lead. Ontario’s Evan McNeely was next out chasing hard with the hope of closing. BC’s Verner tagged off to Quinn Moberg with what looked like a comfortable gap over Nova Scotia in fourth 1 minute 25 seconds back. Caron maintained Quebec’s lead over Ontario securing Québec’s third Gold medal for these games. Ontario’s McNeely crossed the line in second after chasing hard all race. In the end BC’s Mobeg was just able to hold off a hard charging Andrew L’Esperance who closed the gap down to 13 sec in the last lap.

Team Quebec Coach Donald Whelman said after the race: “Everything went as planned, the guys wanted it really bad! They have been talking about it for a while and really executed.” Speaking of both Quebec Teams, he said “I’m really proud of everybody’s effort today, they realized that this can be a great showcase for their sport, and all are really looking forward to the Sprint race on Wednesday.”

The Mountain Bike athletes will take to the start line one more day this week with the Mountain Bike Sprint race, also known as the Eliminator, on Wednesday August 7. The race will feature riders in heats, as they move towards the finals with the top riders moving on to the next round and the other riders being eliminated. The sprint will see be contested on a short 800m circuit, featuring a mix of open ski trail, tight single track, jumps and berms, ending with a drop off right before the finish.

MAX PLAXTON TO RACE CANADA CUP FINALS AT CRANKWORX WHISTLER

Olympian and Two-time Canadian Champion is registered to race in Canada Cup Finals

(Ottawa, ON – August 5, 2013) Two-time Canadian Champion and Olympian Max Plaxton (Sho-Air Cannondale) of Victoria, BC is registered to race the Canada Cup Finals in Whistler, which will be held August 14th in Whistler. The Canada Cup event is part, for the first time, of the internationally-acclaimed Crankworx mountain bike festival.

The race, which will be held on the Lost Lake Trails at the world-class resort, will be the last one of the 2013 Canada Cup season, proclaiming the newest Canada Cup Champion.

“It’s always good to race at home, in your province. I don’t get the chance that often to race close to home, especially in such a beautiful place like Whistler. In addition, it’s great preparation for the upcoming world championships in South Africa. I’m really excited about this race on the west coast, and it would be nice to have this event become a fixture on the Canada Cup circuit year after year,” said Max Plaxton, Olympian and two-time Canadian Champion.

The leaders entering this final race of the 2013 Canada Cup Series are Antoine Caron (Specialized Racing) and Sandra Walter (Liv/Giant Canada), who both won medals at the recent Canadian Championships, in the elite categories, and Félix Burke and Canadian Champion Rachel Pageau in the junior categories.

Caron, with 485 points, currently has a 75 points lead over Evan McNeely (Norco Factory) in second place of the Elite Men category, while American racer Stephen Ettigner (BMC Mountain Bike) sits in third with 400 points. Evan Guthrie, who is already registered, could ride away with the title with a strong performance in Whistler, currently sitting in fourth at 350 points.

In the women’s Elite standings, Walter is enjoying a perfect season at 600 points. Her closest competitor is Andréanne Pichette (OPUS) with 505 points, while Frédérique Trudel (Specialized Racing Canada) is sitting third at 415 points. It will take a very strong performance for Pichette to dislodge the perfect Walter from the top spot, but her second place is not guaranteed with a roaring Trudel, in her rookie season in the elite category, still within reach of the second place.

The tightest race might very well be within the junior men category, with three riders separated by only 50 points. Félix Burke (CVM 2 Vals) is leading with 255 points, but not too close is the red-hot Peter Disera (Team Ontario / CSAJCC p/b Norco) with 230 points. In third comes Félix Belhumeur (Lessard Bicycles). All three have just been named to the Canadian team headed to the World Championships in South Africa.

The women’s junior race is currently an all-Quebec affair, with the current Junior Canadian Champion Rachel Pageau (Club Cycle D’alma / Ekoi Devinci) leading the pack with 285 points. Marine Lewis is sitting in second place with only 15 points separating her from the top spot of the series. Sarah-Claudie Dostie-Ménard (CVM ProCycle Hull/Aylmer-Specialized) is sitting in third place, with 200 points

Registration recently opened for the Canadian Open XC / Canada Cup Final. All race information can be available at the following event page: http://www.crankworx.com/whistler/events/canada-cup-xc

TRUDEL AND BOUCHARD WIN MOUNTAIN BIKE EVENTS AT CANADA GAMES

Québec wins both Canada Games titles on home soil in first day of competition

(Ottawa, ON – August 4, 2013) The mountain bike athletes toed the start line for the first races of the Canada Summer games Saturday, under gloomy skies.

Heavy rains over the last few days left the riders with a wet and muddy course at Mont Bellevue. Riders were looking forward to racing on the fun technical 6km course in Sherbrooke, featuring several technical features as well as several demanding climbs, which played a critical role in the selection of the race.

The Women’s race featured a strong field of top riders including 2013 Canadian U23 Champion Frederique Trudel (Quebec). As the women waited on the start line for the race to begin, rain started and soaked the already wet course, increasing the technical level of the course.

Up the first climb off the start a select group of six formed which would ultimately be the race. By the end of the first lap, a group of three had distanced themselves from the rest of the field : Frederique Trudel (Quebec) Laura Bietola (Ontario) and Andreane Lanthier-Nadeau (Quebec). In pursuit of the leaders were Karlee Gendron (Manitoba), Laurence Harvey (Quebec) and Haley Smith (Ontario).

As the rain continued during the second lap, the leaders distanced themselves from the pack as they solidified their lead. Gendron, despite being sick overnight, charged past Lanthier-Nadeau into third place.

Heading out onto the third and final lap, the rain began to let up as the racers continued. Halfway through the final lap, Bietola decided to make a move for the win: “I knew Frederique was strong, but I wasn’t sure how she was feeling today, so I decided I needed to test and see what she had so I attacked.” Ultimately the attack was unsuccessful. As the riders emerged from the woods for the final time, it was Frederique Trudel who crossed the line first, just 19 seconds ahead of Laura Bietola (Ontario) in second and Karlee Gendron (Manitoba) in third.

Following the race, a very excited Trudel, newly crowned Canada Games Champion, commented: “I’m not used to a three-lap race like this, so I just went really hard off the start and held it to the end. These Canada Games have been a really awesome experience and I’m really excited for the rest of the week”.

Unlike the women’s race the men’s race began under sunny skies, but the threat of more rain remained.  As the men hit the first climb a lead group of seven formed by the time they hit the feed zone for the first time. This lead group contained three Quebec riders, Léandre Bouchard, Jeremy Martin and Antoine Caron, one Nova Scotia rider, Andrew L’Esperance, one rider from British Columbia, Evan Guthrie, and one from Ontario, Mitch Bailey.

Heading out onto lap two, L’Esperance found himself three seconds off the back of this main group. It was during the second lap that Bouchard attacked the group, which splintered the group.

In the last lap, Bouchard increased his lead to 21seconds over Caron in second, with Bailey and Martin a further 10 seconds back. In the fourth and final lap, Bouchard continued to open his lead as the rain started up again. Caron continued to ride in second as Bailey gapped Martin for third. As the last lap wore on, the rain picked up and the riders emerged from the woods covered in mud. The first out of the woods and across the line was Léandre Bouchard (Quebec), 32 seconds ahead of Antoine Caron (Quebec). Mitch Bailey (Ontario) finished third at 1:42 behind Bouchard.

Bouchard was really happy with how the race played out: “I got a good start and rode with Jeremy Martin, and then kicked on the second lap and got a gap. Then I just held my pace until the end. I’m really happy with my race today and looking forward to the Sprint race on Wednesday.” Bouchard is the recently crowned Canadian Sprint Champion and will be looking to take home another Gold medal on Wednesday.

The Mountain Bike athletes will compete in two more events on the trails of Mont Bellevue, this week. August 5th will feature the Team Relay, which will see the provinces race head to head against each other. Wednesday will see the riders take on the exciting cross country sprint event, also known as the Eliminator, which will see riders race in heats, as they move towards the finals. The top two riders will move on to the next round, and the other riders being eliminated. The sprint will be contested on a short 800m circuit, featuring a mix of open trails, tight single track, jumps and berms, all ending with a drop off right before the finish.

THREE CANADIAN JUNIOR MEN IN TOP 12 OF NATIONS CUP STAGE RACE

Adam Jamieson wins Best Young Rider jersey after three days of racing

(Ottawa, ON – August 4, 2013) The 2013 Trophée Centre Morbihan cycling race ended today in France, and three Canadian junior men placed within the Top 12 of the 212.2 kilometre race, which is part of the UCI Nations Cup.

Adam Jamieson (17; Barrie, ON) was Canada’s best at this three-stage race, placing in seventh place. With the ranking, Jamieson is also crowned the Best Young Rider of the race, finishing just 1:14 from the winning time set by Mathieu van der Poel of Netherland, son of legendary cyclist Andrei van der Poel.

In ninth place came William Elliot (18; Barrie, ON), just one second off Jamieson’s time.  Sean MacKinnon (17; Hamilton, ON) ended the race in 12th place.

Team Canada finishes the race in third place among the 17 nations represented at the Nations Cup. With the stellar performance from the team at this race, Canada jumps to the 13th place of the UCI Nations Cup rankings, from 27th prior to the week.

Luc Arseneau, Development coach at Cycling Canada, is pleased with the outcome in France. “We are thrilled with the third place in the team rankings, especially since all the big nations and riders were present. It’s a pleasure to build and lead such a great team. We are progressing year after year, and now we must teach our young cyclists how to win. In the past not too distant ago, we were really far from that stage. This was an important project, including Abitibi, The guys learnt a lot in a long project as this one, compared to a short-term project.”

21 athletes to compete for Canada at upcoming Para-Cycling Road World Championships

(Ottawa, ON – August 2, 2013) Cycling Canada is proud to announce the cyclists selected to compete for Canada at the upcoming 2013 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships to be held on Canadian soil, in Baie-Comeau, Quebec, from August 29 to September 1, 2013.

The team is comprised of 21 athletes, who will compete in the individual time trial races and the road races in all para-cycling categories.

“We are going to Baie-Comeau with the main objective to win World Championships titles,” said Arnaud Litou, Canadian Para-Cycling Program Supervisor. “Our secondary objectives will be to develop the athlete’s autonomy in racing situations, looking for areas to fine-tune in preparations for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.”

Hosting the World Championships on Canadian soil also gives the national team the opportunities to showcase the Canadian talent in para-cycling, and expose the program to the general public.

The team representing Canada at this prestigious event will be relatively the same as the one competing the week prior at the World Cup Finals in Matane, with the exception of the addition of Brayden McDougall in the line-up, and the removal of development athletes Myriam Adam and the tandem of Mathieu Croteau-Daigle and Luc Dionne.

“The Canadian para-cyclists have performed to our expectations in this first year of the new Paralympic cycle. We are hoping to defend our Rainbow jerseys this year,” said Jacques Landry, High Performance Director and Head Coach at Cycling Canada. “Baie-Comeau has hosted these World Championships in 2010, and has demonstrated to be a reliable and dynamic host offering a challenging world-class courses.”

In 2011 at these Para-Cycling Road World Championships, Canada won seven medals, including five World Titles. The powerful tandem of Robbi Weldon and Lyne Bessette won the title in the women’s tandem time trial race, while the two tricycle women, Marie-Eve Croteau and Shelley Gauthier, swept the podium by winning titles in both the road and time trial races. Marie-Claude Molnar (C4) earned the silver medal in the road race, while Mark Ledo (H3) took the bronze medal in the road race.

CYCLING CANADA ANNOUNCES TEAM HEADING TO THE 2013 PARA-CYCLING ROAD WORLD CUP FINALS

23 athletes to compete for Canada at upcoming World Cup in Matane, QC

(Ottawa, ON – August 1, 2013) Cycling Canada is proud to announce the cyclists selected to compete for Canada at the upcoming 2013 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cup Finals to be held on Canadian soil, in Matane, Quebec, from August 23 to 25, 2013.

The Canadian Team is comprised of 23 athletes, including eight women, who will compete in the individual time trial races and the road races in hand-cycle, tricycle and blind and cycle categories.

“Canada has always been a top-performer in Para-cycling, winning consistently on the international tour, and this year has not been an exception,” said Jacques Landry, High Performance Director and Head Coach at Cycling Canada. “For the 2013 season, we have focussed energies to find new talent for the upcoming Paralympic cycle, giving new riders some important international exposure as we prepare the foundation for a successful 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.”

Although no Canadians are presently wearing the white jersey as World Cup leader since Canada did not send a full delegation to the first event of the season, many will be looking to score big results with hopes to win the jersey as the World Cup season ends in Matane.

In 2012, Canada won the jersey in six classes, with Robert Labbé (H1-M), the tandem of Daniel Chalifour and Alexandre Cloutier (BVI-M); the tandem of Robbi Weldon and Lyne Bessette (BVI-W), Shelley Gautier (T1-W), Marie-Eve Croteau (T2-W), Marie-Claude Molnar (C4-W) and the Men’s Team Relay all winning the white jersey as the overall season winner.

Arnaud Litou, Program Supervisor for the Canadian Para-cycling team: “We will be using the World Cup in Matane as our final preparations for the UCI World Championships, which is held the following weekend in Baie-Comeau. Our team will be riding strong to score big results in order to win the coveted Crystal Globes. Racing together allows our athletes to develop effective and efficient communications system, and we intend to use those races in Matane to fine-tune these systems for the World Championships.”

The Canadian Para-Cycling Team is coached by Eric Van Den Eynde and Sebastien Travers.

The Canadian Para-Cycling Program has worked really hard in the shadow, and its athletes are true and consistent international contenders. Added Litou: “We want to take these two weekends of racing in Canada to showcase the program, what we have done, the opportunities we can offer to race, from the beginner level to the top of the international podium. The program has grown strong in the last Paralympic cycle, and that’s in large part dedicated to our sponsors, such as Garneau, Marinoni, Top End, Calfee, Cervelo, Quarq & Lemond Fitness.”

CYCLING CANADA PRESIDENT JOHN TOLKAMP ADDS VOICE TO UCI ELECTORAL PROCESS

(Ottawa, ON – August 1, 2013) Cycling Canada Cyclisme President John Tolkamp has added his voice on behalf of the organization to those that are concerned with the recent revelation that an amendment to the UCI presidential election process is being considered long after the deadline for nominations has closed.

“The Canadian Cycling community has provided us with feedback through our strategic plan consultation process of this past spring and, more recently, on the specific proposal to amend the UCI constitution in relation to the upcoming election for President,” said Tolkamp.  “They are concerned that the recent proposed amendment further exemplifies a willingness to put individual goals ahead of the reforms needed to ensure the best possible future for Cycling”.

“We have contributed to the world-wide consultation and have communicated our concerns to both the candidates for the Presidency of the UCI,” noted Tolkamp.  “This is an important point in cycling’s history.  The two candidates are known. Let’s allow the electoral process to take place. The candidate that can best lead the sport forward will be chosen, and the entire cycling community should support him as well as hold him accountable.”

Cycling Canada Cyclisme is one of forty-one nations in the Pan American Confederation (COPACI).  The Americas have nine (9) votes at the UCI Congress and Canada is not one of the voting nations this year based on elections at the spring 2013 COPACI Congress.  Canada has a strong position on many UCI Commissions and is seen as a leader in many areas of cycling development.  The views of Canada will be well represented at the UCI Congress in September.
