TORY NYHAUG COMES BACK FROM INJURY TO FINISH FIFTH AT WORLD CHAMPIOSHIPS

Nyhaug consistent among World’s Best

(Auckland, NZE – July 28, 2013) Canadian BMX humble star Tory Nyhaug (Coquitlam, BC) finished the 2013 International Cycling Union (UCI) BMX World Championships in fifth place on Sunday in Auckland, New Zealand, establishing himself consistently among the World’s best BMX riders.

Nyhaug easily qualified for the elimination round motos with the eleventh fastest time of the Time Trial race on Saturday.

On the day of the Supercross World Championships, Nyhaug breezed through the first two rounds by placing third and second respectively. In the semi-finals, and facing some stiff competition, Nyhaug resisted the strong field to finish second of his heat to move on to the big finals.

In the final heat of the day, Nyhaug took the fifth place crossing the line just two seconds behind the winner, and less than one second off the podium, an excellent result for the young rider.

Liam Phillips (GBR) today became the new World Champion, dislodging Sam Willoughby (AUS) of the rainbow stripes. Marc Willers (NZE), racing on his home country soil, took the second place, while German rider Luis Brethauer (GER) took the third place to complete the podium.

Nyhaug entered the 2013 UCI BMX World Championships ranked 16th in the world ranking, after missing the last two races recovering from an injury he sustained late in the spring. At his only UCI Supercross race, in Manchester (GBR), Nyhaug had posted his career best results finishing in second place.

In the women’s race, Canada’s Amelia Walsh (Ayr, ON) qualified for the Supercross competition with the 22nd fastest time. In the three-race motos, Walsh finished fifth of her heat, and finished her World Championships appearance in 24th place.

QUEBEC PLACES TWO TEAMS ON TEAM RELAY PODIUM TO CLOSE CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Team Relay and Master races highlight the last day of competition at Canadian Championships

(Barrie, ON – July 21, 2013) Team Québec ‘Numéro Un QC’ were the fastest four-member squad during the fun Team Relay on Sunday, winning the tightly contested race between Team Ontario to close the 2013 Canadian Cross Country Mountain Bike Championships at Hardwood Ski and Bike, near Barrie, ON.

The winning team, comprised of Raphael Gagné, Canadian Eliminator Champion Léandre Bouchard, Antoine Caron and Andréane Lanthier-Nadeau as the Female rider, came out on top of the large group of 10 teams in the Championships category.

Team ‘Numéro Un QC’ took off along with Team Ontario right from the start, and both teams controlled the front of the race right from the first lap. Throughout the four-lap race, the two teams exchanged leads a few times before the final stretch, when Antoine Caron outsprinted Cameron Jette of Team Ontario at the finish line to take Québec’s first ever Team Relay victory at Canadian Championships.

In second place came the defending Canadian Champions of Team Ontario (Mitch Baily, Peter Disera, Amanda Sin and Antoine Caron), followed by ‘Deux c’est mieux QC’, the second team from Québec (Alexandre Vialle, Raphael Auclair, Frédérique Trudel and Patrick Chartrand).

The Team Relay has been on the permanent Canadian Championships program for a third consecutive year, and has now been held five times at the event. Ontario teams won three times, with British Columbia and Québec each taking one title.

The Master races were also held on this last day of competition. Danny Souter (KHS Bicycles) won the race in the Master A (30-39) category. In the Master B (40-49) category, Robert Holmgren (Velocity Cycle and Ski) took the victory, racing in the largest category of the weekend with 36 participants. In the Master C (50+), it’s Christian Lalancette (Cycle Néron Specialized) who won the ultimate prize, taking the title for the third consecutive year.

In the women’s master races, Carmen Labbé (Quilicot-Rackultara) took the Canadian Champion jersey of the women’s 30-39 age category. Linda Shin (Blacksmith Cycle), racing with a Korean licence, won the same race but did not receive the right to the title since she is not a permanent Canadian resident. Lisa Holmgren (Veloctity Cycle and Ski) won the women 40+ race.

Canadian Challenges were also held for a wide range of age categories, ranging from U11 to Masters 60+.

This premier Mountain Bike event will be hosted back at Hardwood Ski and Bike for a second consecutive time after the successful hosting of this year’s edition.

CYCLING CANADA CONGRATULATES SVEIN TUFT, DAVID VEILLEUX AND RYDER HESJEDAL

The three Canadian riders completed the gruelling, 21-day Tour de France

(Ottawa, ON – July 21, 2013) The Tour de France ended today with the traditional last stage finishing at the Champs Elysée, and three Canadians were among the group of riders who crossed the finish line.

Tour de France rookies Svein Tuft of Langley, BC (Orica-GreenEDGE) and David Veilleux of Cap-Rouge, QC (Team EuropCar) finished their first tour appearance, while 2012 Giro d’Italia winner Ryder Hesjesdal of Victoria, BC (Team Garmin-Sharp) concluded the tour as the Top Canadian.

“We are very proud of these three Canadian riders at the Tour de France. Crossing the finish line of the Tour de France is a remarkable feat, and we should all be proud of them. Cycling in Canada has grown exponentially in the recent years, and have three Canadian taking part in the tour is a testament to the growth of cycling,” said Jacques Landry, High Performance Director and Head Coach at Cycling Canada. “With the depth that we are continuing to build, we expect to see more Canadians on the start line in future years.

The Tour de France is the most prestigious race in the World. Over 21 days, riders travelled 3,404 kilometers in some of the most difficult terrain in the World. This year, the tour was comprised of seven flat stages, five hilly stages, six mountain stages with four summit finishes, two individual time trial stages and one team time trial stage.

JIM BROWN WITHDRAWS FROM BMX WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Jim Brown suffers from broken collar bone while training for BMX World Championships

(Ottawa, ON – July 18, 2013) Canadian BMX rider Jim Brown will not be competing at the 2013 BMX World Championships after suffering from a broken collar bone as a result of a crash while training in Abbotsford, BC on Thursday.

The spot left vacant by Brown will not be filled.

The 2013 BMX World Championships will be held in Auckland, New Zealand, from July 24-28.

DISERA BROTHERS LEAVE A MARK ON HOME TURF

Peter Disera wins third Canadian title, Quinton Disera takes career first jersey

(Barrie, ON – July 20, 2013) Brothers Peter and Quinton Disera left a mark on their home turf on Saturday, both winning a Canadian title in their respective age categories.

Peter, who won notably the junior time trial race at the Canadian Road Championships earlier in Lac Mégantic, QC, and the junior title at the Canadian Cyclo-Cross Championships last fall, was without a doubt the number one rider to watch today in the men’s junior race. Disera certainly delivered a spectacular performance, taking the title by over two minutes over his closest competitor, Félix Burke of Mont-Tremblant (CVM 2 Vals), and almost three minutes on third-place finisher Félix Belhumeur (Équipe du Québec-Lessard Bicycle).

“It was unexpected for the both of us. Those wins were something different for us, acknowledged Peter, who lives six kilometres from the Championships venue and trains at Hardwood Ski and Bike. “This title feels awesome. The other title I won this year, the time trial, was one where I just showed up and did my best. The Cyclo-cross was also one that I was gunning for, and it went well.  This one today, I was training hard for, and knew the competition would be there, and that I had to go.”

Peter Disera extends the streak to four of Ontario wins in the Junior Men category. In the last four editions of the event, an Ontario rider won the junior men category.

Younger brother Quinton, at his first year Cadet and first appearance at Canadian Cross Country Championships, also demonstrated his skills by winning the race by 2:23 over Tyler Orschel (Team Ontario-Trek Store) in second place. Cédrik Cantin (Équipe VESR) finished in third place to complete the podium.

“It feels pretty awesome to wear this jersey. All the hard work that we put into it just paid off today, and I am looking forward to the next races this season. I’d be interested in racing in the junior races next year,” added Quinton.

“There are many people that my brother and I have to thank, including my parents who have trucked us to all these races and paid for all this jazz. Team Ontario have been a great help, as well as both of our coaches and neighbour in the community,” continued Peter.

In the women’s junior race, Rachel Pageau (Équipe du Québec-Devinci) took the opportunity left by the departure of two-time defending champion Frédérique Trudel to the Espoirs category, and rode away to win her first Canadian Championships jersey. Pageau spent some this year in Europe, racing the UCI World Cup in Val di Sole (ITA) representing the Canadian National Team. Haley Golding (Team Ontario-CSAJCC p/b Norco) took the second place of the women’s junior race, followed by Gabrielle April (Rocky Mountain Bicycle/Procycle) in third place.

After Kristina Laforge junior women victory in 2010, and Frédérique Trudel’s two-year stretch winning the junior women race, Pageau continues Québec strong performances in the women’s junior category, taking the fourth consecutive title by a Quebec rider.

In the women’s cadet category, Soren Meeuwisse of Barrie, ON, and daughter of race organizer Glenn Meeuwisse, rode the very familiar course with ease, and took the title with a lead of over two minutes on Liah Harvey of Banff, Alberta. Arianne Lewis of St-Sauveur, QC ended her day on the mountain in third position.

ZANDSTRA, BATTY WIN AS ONTARIO DOMINATES CANADIAN CROSS-COUNTRY MOUNTAIN BIKE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Two new Canadian Champions are crowned at Hardwood Hills and Bike, in Ontario

(Barrie, ON – July 20, 2013) On a day where six of the eight Canadian Champions crowned hailed from Ontario, two new Canadian Champions stood up at the Canadian Cross Country Mountain Bike Championships on Saturday, with Derek Zandstra (Trenton, ON) and Emily Batty (Brooklyn, ON) both taking their first ever Elite Mountain Bike titles.

Derek Zandstra of Ontario-based SCOTT-3RoxRacing took the title by attacking both teammate and three-time Olympian Geoff Kabush, and the two-time defending Canadian Champion Max Plaxton of Victoria, BC with two laps to go in the six-lap, 36km race.

“I am pretty fired up to win the title and wear the Red and White jersey. I have had a lot of second and third places in the past, always being so close.” said Zandstra, who was elated of his first Elite title. “ddd” added the veteran rider.

“We certainly had some team tactics today. We had three of us [SCOTT-3 Rox Racing] in the Top 4 today. We played around at the beginning of the race, something we tried last weekend to see how it would work. It worked out pretty awesome today. Geoff and I had some different setups out there, and we were to capitalize on our strengths and weaknesses, and use it to our advantage.”

“It was a long race today. Going into the last lap, I couldn’t feel my legs, but I stayed focussed and relaxed and try not to mess it up! I’ve been doing it for so long that you just know what you got to do at the end, and hope for the best. It’s a bonus to know that you are pulling away time as you are just pacing yourself. It gave me a little more confidence.”

Kabush went on to take the second place by attacking in the last sections of the course, with Plaxton taking the third place.

In the women’s race, it was no surprise to see Emily Batty, racing with team Trek Factory Racing, win the title as the four-time defending Champion Catharine Pendrel was not on the start line, nursing a fractured collar bone. Batty has been in fine form this season, stepping once on the World Cup podium.

Batty started her domination very early in the 5-lap race, and never looked back riding with confidence throughout the race.

“I was so excited way back when it was announced that Hardwood Ski and Bike would host the Canadian Championships. I just know the course like the back of my hand. I know it very well. I am really happy on how I was feeling throughout the race, despite waking up this morning with an extremely bad sore throat”, said Batty after the race, surrounded by a large crew of supporters. “I am really honoured to not be wearing my black team kit! I am excited to go to Europe proudly wearing the Maple Leaf on my back as Canadian Champion.”

“I was really looking forward to getting a chance to win the Elite title. It’s so unfortunate that Catharine couldn’t be here (nursing a collar bone fracture). I know exactly what she is feeling having been through the same injury last summer. I think both of us acknowledged that we would have had an awesome battle.”

The Elite title is the first for Batty in cross-country, after winning four consecutive U23 titles before turning elite two seasons ago.

The two Elite titles represent a milestone for Ontario, which had not won an Elite title at the Canadian Cross-Country Mountain Bike Championships since 2000, when Chrissy Redden won back-to-back titles in 1999 and 2000, both races held at Camp Fortune, QC.

In the U23 races, Frédérique Trudel of Breakyville, QC, riding for the Équipe du Québec/Specialized Racing Canada, sent a strong message today, imposing herself in her first Canadian Championships within the U23 age category. Trudel, a two-time Canadian champion in the Junior group and past Canada Cup Champion, started her race with a nice tempo, and managed to bring herself back to the front of the group in the last two laps to take the victory. In second place came Andréane Lanthier-Nadeau of Rocky Mountain Factory Racing Team, while Maghalie Rochette of Powerwatts-Nord rounded the podium in third place.

Mitchell Baily of Barrie, ON (Trek Canada Racing Team) took his first Canadian Title in the U23 category since winning back-to-back title as a Cadet (U17) rider in 2007 and 2008. Baily ended Léandre Bouchard’s run of two consecutive titles in the highly competitive age category. 2010 Junior Canadian Champion Evan McNeely of Ottawa, ON took the second place, followed by Antoine Caron of Stoneham, QC (Équipe du Québec/Specialized Racing Canada) in third.

The races were held at the Hardwood Ski and Bike Resort, near Barrie, ON, which underwent dramatic changes to its trails to welcome the best Canadian riders for these Championships, including the addition of climbs and man-made technical sections which offered the riders a tough course.

Racing resumes tomorrow with the presentation of the exciting and face-paced Team Relay, with Team Ontario looking to defend its two-year reign at the top, as well as the Championship races for the Masters categories.

BERKENPAS AND BOUCHARD WIN INAUGURAL ELIMINATOR RACE

An exciting race from start to finish makes its debut on the Canadian Championships program

(Barrie, ON – July 18, 2013) Léandre Bouchard of Alma, QC (Équipe du Québec-Cyclones d’Alma) and Jean-Ann Berkenpas of Valemount, BC (XPREZO-Borsao) are Canada’s first ever Cross Country Eliminator Champions!

Bouchard and Berkenpas both took the first Canadian titles for the brand new cross country mountain bike discipline, which consists of an elimination-type format, with the top two of each heat moving on to the next rounds until the gold medal race.

In the men’s race, Leandre Bouchard rode to the gold medal in an exciting race, edging at the finish line junior rider Peter Disera of Barrie, ON (Team Ontario/CSAJCC p/b Norco LG) and Mitch Bailey, also of Barrie, ON (Trek Canada Mountain Bike), second and third respectively.

“It’s always a pride to wear the red and white colors. I have a lot of speed in me right now, and I’ll be ready to apply this speed to the cross-country race on Saturday. There are some very good riders in the U23 category in Canada, and that’s what this race has demonstrated,” said Bouchard, beaming of joy after crossing the finish line.

“The race [eliminator] is much shorter. It happens very quickly, hence the start is very important. Sometimes there are strategies to apply. With high speeds, the slightest mistake can be very costly, so you constantly have to be very careful.”

Jean-Ann Berkenpas took the women’s title, winning the ultimate race in front of Andreane Pichette of Québec, QC (Opus-OCG) in second place and Cindy Montambeault of Val David, QC (CVM 2 Vals) in third place.

“I am thrilled about this win. I had good luck with the heats with attacking in the start, and getting a small gap in the first section entering the technical forest. In the final, my plan didn’t quite work out as I entered third in the forest. After that, I just had to pass. I was lucky to have that opportunity in the BMX features, and after that I just went as hard as I could, and managed to hold them off,” said Berkenpas, who was taking part in her first ever eliminator race.

“The eliminator is a very spectator-friendly event, focussing on speed and action. There are usually some technical features, but it really favours the rider who is powerful and can sprint well. It’s quite different from the cross country which would normally favour a better climber, with endurance who will be strong at the end of the race. This race suits me very well, and it’s a very fun event to participate in.”

The crowd-pleasing race was held on a short 1-km course. Earlier in the day, riders qualified for the elimination heats in a time-trial format to determine the final seeding.

The fast-paced race is organized for the first time on the UCI World Cup as a full event.

Tomorrow, the riders will enjoy a day of training before Super Saturday, where all cross country Canadian mountain bike event. The event annually attracts some of the country’s best mountain bikers challenging for the Red and White Jersey awarded to the Canadian Champions. Organized by the Pulse Racing Club at the Hardwood Ski and Bike Resort near Barrie, ON, the event is governed by the Cycling Canada, a member of the International Cycling Union (UCI).

TOP CROSS-COUNTRY MOUNTAIN BIKERS TO RACE FOR CANADIAN TITLES THIS WEEK

Barrie, ON welcomes the best cross-country specialists for Canadian Championships

(Barrie, ON – July 16, 2013) The top cross-country mountain bikers of Canada will compete this week for the ultimate domestic prize, the coveted Red and White jersey. In the last Olympic cycle, the Canadian mountain bike program has significantly improved under the leadership of Head Coach Dan Proulx, and today the program has become very competitive, with strong riders in each age categories.

In the women’s elite category, all eyes will be turned on Ontario cyclist Emily Batty (Trek Factory Racing), of Brooklyn, who has an open door to win her first Elite title with the absence of reigning Canadian Champion Catharine Pendrel, who has recently been sidelined with a fractured collarbone, and Marie-Hélène Prémont, who is on a maternity leave. Certainly, other top riders such as Sandra Walters, which has been perfect so far this season on the Canada Cup tour, Amanda Sin, Mikaela Kofman and many others will look to challenge for the top spot.

Batty, a four-time Canadian U23 Champion, rebounded this season after recovering from a broken collar bone while training at the Olympic Games, and stepped once on the World Cup podium this campaign. Batty, along with Pendrel, represented Canada at the last Olympic Games in London.

Both Kabush and Plaxton represented Canada in London at the Olympic Games last summer.

Derek Zandstra is always a rider to watch for at Canadian Championships, as he’s very consistent. Other young riders such as Raphael Gagné and Evan McNeely will be providing some stiff competition, which will make this race very exciting to watch.

The reigning Canadian Champions in the U23 categories, Andreanne Pichette and Léandre Bouchard, will both be defending their titles.

CANADA’S HENDRIK PINEDA WINS OPENING STAGE AT TOUR DE L’ABITIBI

Pineda wins the brown and white leader’s jersey in sprint finish

(Rouyn-Noranda, QC – July 16, 2013) The 45th Tour de l’Abitibi opened up today with a 117km journey between Amos and Rouyn-Noranda, and Hendrik Pineda, member of the Canadian National Team, won the stage in a mass-sprint finish.

The race started with a few breakaway attempts, which were all unsuccessful. The biggest threat of the day was one group that took over 1:30 on the peloton. Entering the final circuits in Rouyn-Noranda, the break’s lead melted and the peloton took the opportunity to merge.

“I tried to stay at the front of the pack today. There were a few break attempts, but they didn’t last long.”

The sprint finish on the first day was a good situation for Pineda, a natural sprinter: “Arriving in the last lap, I knew I had the legs to put up a good sprint. I turned the last corner in fifth place, and launched the sprint to take the win today. Sprinting is a lot about positioning, and I had good position today.”

By taking the victory, Pineda check off his main objective of winning one stage at this important international stage race, and also grabs the brown leader’s jersey.

“My objective here was to win a stage, so I am very happy to have accomplished it on the first day. The pace was really fast as everyone was excited and fresh for the race,” said Pineda, 18 years old of Montreal, QC “It means a lot to win the leader’s jersey, especially on the first day. I hope to keep the brown’s leader’s jersey until the time trials on Thursday morning, as I know it’s not my strength.

The Tour de l’Abitibi resumes tomorrow with a 106-kilometer stage between La Sarre and Rouyn Noranda.
