STEVE SMITH KING OF THE MOUNTAIN AT PANORAMA; MICAYALA GATTO WINS WOMEN TITLE

Canadian star Steve Smith wins Canadian Championships, Gatto repeats 2010 performance

(Ottawa, ON – July 14, 2013) Steve Smith of Nanaimo, BC (Global Devinci Racing), the king of downhill in Canada ranked third in the UCI World rankings and second on the UCI World Cup rankings, just added another title to his credentials; Canadian Champion.

Under bright blue skies at the Panorama Mountain Resort, Canada’s top downhillers raced for Canadian titles today in all age categories, from Cadet to Masters.

Smith, who won two UCI World Championships medals for Canada and three Top3 performances on the UCI World Cup tour in his career, took part at these Championships thanks to the UCI approval for the Canadian National Champion to wear a National Champion sleeve instead of the full National Champion jersey.

Smith, who posted the top qualifying time in Saturday’s seeding run, was the last to go in today’s race, and posted a time of 2:24.22 despite facing a challenging and deteriorated course.  Kyle Sangers (J&J Cycle/Kingston, ON) crossed the line in second place, while Sidney Slotegraaf (Tuf Rak Racing/Hamilton, ON) came third.

“I am happy to have won this race. There was a lot of pressure on me today as everybody expected me to win, it was kind of tough. I haven’t been to this race in six years, and now that the rule has changed to a sleeve, we were all stoked to come out and still be able to support our sponsors. ”, said Smith.

“I am pretty much going there to win everything. I really want to win. Last year, a second or third was an accomplishment. This year, it’s the win that I am going there to do. I am moving on from where I was in Italy and progress from there,” continued Smith. “I want to thank all my sponsors, and Cycling Canada for working to get the new sleeve rule approved. It’s been a good race here at Panorama, and a good time. It was such a good course and a good race.”

In the men’s junior race, all eyes were turned on youngster Mark Wallace of Duncan BC (Devinci Global Racing), which has been riding strong this year on the UCI World Cup tour. Wallace did not disappoint, taking the title with a run of 2:34.06. Hugo Langevin (Équipe du Québec-Cycles Performance-Niquet/Sainte-Catherine, QC) improved from fourth in the qualifiers to finish second, while McKay Vezina (Newbury Park, CA) took third.

“Glad to get the Canadian title. It’s always nice to show off the country we live in and its colours. The day went pretty well, the run was going good. I clipped a tree and took a bit of a wobble,” said Wallace, the 2012 Canada Cup Series Champion. “To me, this was just another race trying to do as well as I could. Definitely, when things are going good, you want to keep it like that. There are a lot of people to thank. My family, Devinci Global Racing and steve who have all helped me so much.”

In the women’s Elite race, it was a three-way race between the top qualifiers Micayla Gatto (North Vancouver, BC), the 2010 Canadian Champion and two-time World Championships medallist, Miranda Miller (Garibaldi Highland, BC), two-time Canadian Championships medallists, and Lauren Rosser (Squamish, BC), the 2010 World Junior Champion.

In practice after the seeding runs, the defending Canadian Champion Casey Brown broke her collarbone, and did not start today’s race.

On race day, it’s Micayla Gatto who came out the fastest of the group, posting a time of 2:48.43, winning her third career title.

“It was a good day, a good competition. The track was really challenging. The crew made some good improvements from previous years,” said Gatto. “All the top Canadian girls were here today. It was a very tight race, all the girls killed it.

“They made some good changes to the course. They took out an uphill section which was nice. They also added a bit more technical sections, which I am used to riding on the north shore. I like the fast, technical courses.  Having support helps me achieve my best, with my boyfriend and family here really helped.”

Lauren Rosser climbed on the second step of the Elite women podium in her first race of the season, while Miranda Millar took third place.

In the cadet categories, Magnus Manson (Dunbar Cycle/Sechelt, BC) won the title with a very fast time of 2:41.82, with Nic Rodgers and (Dunbar Cycle/Delta, BC) coming in second and Carter Paschinski (AFD Factory Racing/Red Deer, AB) in third.

D’Arcy O’Connor (Master 30-39), Ryan Kuhn (Masters 40-49) and Derek Diedrickson (Masters 50+) also won the Canadian titles in their respective categories.

This Canadian Downhill Championships has been held three times in the last four years at Panorama Mountain, and the resort in British Columbia is slated to organize the event in 2014 as well.

CANADIAN JUNIOR TRACK RIDERS EXCEL AT PAN-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Canada wins six medals in Mexico with four Pan-American titles

(Ottawa, ON – July 13, 2013) The 2013 UCI Junior Track Pan-American Championships ended on Friday in Mexico, and Canada showed some great potential with its future generation of track cyclists winning six medals including four titles.

Canada’s junior women’s pursuit team came away with gold after beating Mexico in the final on Thursday. Although Ariane Bonhomme (Gatineau, QC), Kinley Gibson (Edmonton, AB), Sarah Mason (London, ON) and Kristen Sears (Ancaster, ON) first rode together in the last couple weeks, they have set the bar high for the Canadian track endurance program. With the women’s team pursuit now being held over four kilometres, the team’s time of 4:42:067 is also a new Canadian record.

“This result bodes well for the future of our track endurance programs,” said Cycling Canada High Performance Director and Head Coach Jacques Landry. “The athletes’ performances show that our provincial coaches have already done great work, and we can expect even better in the coming years, especially with the construction of the Milton Velodrome.”

Unfortunately for Mason, she crashed in the women’s elimination race later that evening, breaking her collarbone. She is undergoing surgery in Mexico and is expected to recover quickly, though she will miss several weeks of racing.

Eric Jonhstone (Calgary, AB) had a brilliant week in Mexico, winning three medals. He took the gold medal in the Kilo in a time of 1:03:247, setting the new Pan-American Championships record and new Canadian Junior record. He also won a pair of silver medals in the men’s omnium and the individual pursuit, in which he also set a new Canadian record of 3:18.753

In addition to her team pursuit title, Kinley Gibson also took the highest honours with a gold medal in the women’s omnium, the gruelling six-race event featuring both sprints and endurance events. Marc-Antoine Noel (Drummondville, QC) won gold in the men’s scratch race.

CYCLING CANADA ANNOUNCES TEAM HEADING TO THE 2013 BMX CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Four athletes to compete for Canada at upcoming BMX Cycling World Championships

(Ottawa, ON – July 10, 2013) Cycling Canada is proud to announce the cyclists selected to compete for Canada at the upcoming 2013 UCI BMX World Championships to be held in Auckland, New Zealand, from July 25 to 28, 2013.

The team is comprised of four athletes, who will compete in the Elite individual time trial and the supercross races.

For the Canadian BMX program, under the guidance of a new Head Coach, 2013 has been a year of development, with a new structure and coaching support being implemented into the program. A centralized group has been put together in the Vancouver area where many of the top athletes live and train together on a daily base.

“With the program firing on all cylinders, all athletes on the National team have made some major gains in their performance. James Brown (Airdrie, AB) and Amelia Walsh (Ayr, ON) have made some considerable gains in a short while and have proven in race results this year that they are solid contenders to qualify into the finales at this year’s World Championships,” said Ken Cools, Head Coach of the Canadian BMX Team.

“James has had a great year as he has bounced back from major injury in 2012, winning five pro races this year and is progressively getting faster and stronger with each event. Amelia has stepped up her game tremendously and has solidified her spot as the fastest female athlete in Canada, her skill level on the bike will give her an advantage over her competition on the tight technical track in Auckland.”

Olympian Tory Nyhaug (Coquitlam, BC) who qualified himself a spot by being in the Top-16 Elite men last year had a stellar start to the year finishing second at the World Cup event in Manchester England in April, and carried on his great form placing well at USABMX pro events in the USA which put him as the number 1 ranked male in the world for a time being.

Last month Nyhaug had a bit of a setback as he crashed and sustained injuries in Nashville, TN. Since, he has worked very hard to come back and be in good form for this event. With a strong showing Nyhaug can be a contender for the title which he has earned three times as an amateur.

The objectives of the team at the UCI World Championships will be to push for the top spot while gaining valuable experience that will help carry the athletes thru events that will take them to Rio in 2016.

The 2013 UCI BMX World Championships will be broadcasted on television in Canada on SportsnetOne and live on the UCI YouTube Channel http://www.youtube.com/ucichannel. Check your local listings for more information on the television broadcast.

Tragedy in Lac Megantic

CYCLING CANADA SADDENED TO LEARN OF TRAGEDY IN LAC MEGANTIC

On Saturday July 6th, at approximately 1AM, a train loaded with at least 72 cars of crude oil derailed in Lac Megantic. The derailment has leveled at least 60% of the downtown core. When contacted by phone Denis Bolduc, race organizer and downtown store owner, mentioned that as a result of the train derailment, buildings on the north side of route 161 which goes through the downtown core of Lac Megantic (the top of the technical Criterium course) are reported to have been demolished, while  shops on the south side have thankfully been spared.

The team at Cycling Canada extends heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the community of Lac Megantic. In response to the crisis, Cycling Canada has put a Disaster Relief fund in place to contribute to the rebuilding of the downtown center that has played host to our Canadian Road Championships for the last few years. We now call upon the Canadian cycling community to join us in supporting our friends in this community
