OTTAWA, ON (July 19, 2026) – Just one year after a bronze medal performance in the Junior Men’s category at the 2025 BMX Racing World Championships in Denmark, Lucas Zhou has claimed the junior men’s gold medal and the coveted rainbow jersey at the 2026 UCI BMX Racing World Championships in Brisbane, Australia.
The British Columbia rider placed first in every round he raced. His performance in Brisbane showcases the work Lucas has been putting in since his medal winning ride last year. At the 2025 Copenhagen championships, he finished 4th in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds before securing his bronze medal. On Brisbane’s track, there was no uncertainty. Zhou led from round one and held that position through to the finish, claiming the world title.
Zhou’s gold finish marks a historic moment for Cycling Canada’s next generation of BMX Racing talent, and a major milestone for Lucas’s journey as an athlete. “I honestly can’t believe that I am a world champion now,” said Zhou. “It’s been something I’ve dreamed of since I began racing.” This is the highest achieving performance in the Junior Men’s BMX Racing category to date for Canada, and Canada’s first BMX Racing world title.
