NATHAN CLEMENT BECOMES WORLD CHAMPION AT 2023 UCI CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ottawa, ON (Aug. 9, 2023) – Paralympian Nathan Clement of West Vancouver, BC, nabbed his first-ever World Champion title in the Men T1 Individual Time Trial on Aug. 9 at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, GBR.

“This time trial was though,” said Clement, who finished second in both the time trial and road race in 2022. “It took some time to get going at the start of the race, but as it progressed, I was able to dial in and focus on the training I’ve worked on with my coach Phil Abbott. The win is still sinking in and the emotions haven’t caught yet. Getting to this World Championships was a journey. I am very thankful and appreciative of the incredible team of coaches and the support staff behind me.”

Clement rode at a speed of over 30km/hr to complete the 10.8km course in 18:50.35m. He was joined on the podium by Jianxin Chen (CHN) in the silver medal position and Rongfei Lu (CHN) in bronze.

DAY 6 HIGHLIGHTS: 2023 UCI CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Canada saw its first rainbow jersey of the year on Aug. 8 at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, GBR.

Para-cycling Track
2022 World Champion Mel Pemble successfully held onto her title for another year in the Women C3 Omnium. The Victoria, BC, native secured the rainbow jersey after crossing the finish line second after Xiaomei Wang (CHN) in the Women C3 Scratch Race, bringing home the silver medal in that event, as well.

Earlier in the day, Canada’s Mixed C Team Sprint squad – comprised of Tarek Dahab of Belœil, QC, Kate O’Brien of Calgary, AB, and Pemble – fell shy of a spot in the final, placing 10th in qualification 7.510s behind leader China’s time of 48.507s.

BMX Freestyle Flatland
BMX freestyle flatland competition kicked off with Elite Men Qualifying, in which Jean William Prévost of Montreal, QC’s score of 76.90 earned him 12th place and a spot in tomorrow’s semi-finals. Also riding for the red and white was fellow Montrealer, Jean-François Boulianne, who scored 57.93 for 27th.

Track
In the Women Elite Sprint 1/8 Finals, Kelsey Mitchell of Sherwood Park, AB, just missed out in her heat against Mathilde Gros (FRA) by 0.007s. Lévis, QC’s Lauriane Genest won her heat against Yufang Guo (CHN) by 0.017s to move on to the quarter finals, where she lost to Emma Finucane (GBR).

Other Canadian efforts at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome included James Hedgcock of Ancaster, ON, in the Men Elite Keirin (5th in his Round 1 heat; 4th in his Round 1 Repechage heat), Ryan Dodyk of Lloydminster, AB, in the Men Elite 1km Time Trial Qualifying (16th) and Ariane Bonhomme of Gatineau, QC, in the Women Elite Points Race (12th).

BMX Racing Challenge
It was the third day of the BMX Racing World Challenge, which is open to riders eight and above. Brady Mitschke (Boys 12) and Dallen Brereton-Stiles (Boys 14) made it to the finals for Canada, while Zakary Kaiser (Boys 15) also reached the semi-final.

In addition to the continuation of BMX, track and para-cycling track, tomorrow will also see Canadian competition in e-mountain bike, road and para-road.

MEL PEMBLE HOLDS ON TO OMNIUM CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE AT 2023 UCI CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ottawa, ON (Aug. 8, 2023) – 2022 World Champion Mel Pemble successfully secured the rainbow jersey for another year in the Women C3 Omnium on Aug. 8 at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, GBR.

“I knew it was going to be a fight for this omnium and had to play my cards right,” said the Victoria, BC, native. “I had the omnium in the back of my mind with every decision I made in the scratch. Of course, I was still trying to defend the scratch title but it’s such a fun and unpredictable event that I’m still over the moon with the silver. I crossed the line and in that moment I was just so unbelievably happy to get that omnium title for another year.”

Pemble secured the championship after completing four events for a total of 154 points. She kicked off the multi-day competition with seventh in the Individual Pursuit on Aug. 3 before nabbing a first-place finish in the 200m Sprint on Aug. 4, followed by a bronze medal finish in the Time Trial on Aug. 7. On Aug. 8, Pemble brought home the silver medal in the Women C3 Scratch Race to ultimately clinch omnium gold.

DAY 5 HIGHLIGHTS: 2023 UCI CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Team Canada had its most successful day so far, with a total of three medals won at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, GBR, on Aug. 7.

Para-cycling Track
After making the top four in the Women C3 Individual Pursuit Qualifiers on Aug. 2, Keely Shaw (Midale, SK) was guaranteed a medal as she raced the gold final against Emily Petricola (AUS). With her time of 3:50.004, she ultimately won silver, 7.094s behind her opponent.

“I’m always happy to bring home hardware for Canada at World Championships, it’s always an honour to stand on the podium amongst the best in the world,” said Shaw. “I came up a little bit shy on the time I was looking for today but I think there’s a lot of things we can take away from today’s race as we move into the next year and the Paris Paralympic Games. I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do in the next 12 months.”

Mel Pemble (Victoria, BC) and Tarek Dahab (Beloeil, QC) both impressed in the Time Trial event, with Pemble clinching the bronze medal in the Women C3 category, stopping the clock 2.220s behind Keiko Suguira (JPN) who posted a time of 39.184. Dahab was close to the Men C2 podium in fourth position with a personal best time of 1:11.918, only 1.971s behind the leader, Alexandre Leaute (FRA).

Track
Determined to bring some hardware home, Dylan Bibic (Mississauga, ON) was on a mission in the Elite Men Elimination Race. With only two riders remaining, it came down to a sprint between Bibic and Ethan Vernon (GBR), who ultimately took the win, letting Bibic walk away with the silver medal.

All three Canadian entrants in the Women Elite Sprint, Sarah Orban (Calgary, AB), Lauriane Genest (Lévis, QC) and Kelsey Mitchell (Sherwood Park, AB) breezed through the qualification round. Genest and Mitchell both successfully raced in the 1/16 Finals, where Orban was eliminated after placing only 0.130s behind her opponent Marie Divine Taky Kouame (FRA).Tomorrow, the Sprint Olympic Champion Mitchell will race against the reigning Sprint World Champion, Mathilde Gros (FRA) in the 1/8 Finals, while Genest will take on Yufang Guo (CHI) for her chance to advance to the quarterfinals.

BMX Freestyle Park
After a successful day in qualifications on Aug. 5., Jeffrey Whaley (Montreal, QC) posted a score of 77.80, placing first of his heat in the Elite Men BMX Freestyle Park Finals. He finished in 11th place overall.

BMX Racing Challenge
The BMX Racing World Challenge held its second day of competition, which is open to riders eight and above. Elle Foo-Donais was the only Canadian to reach the final rounds, ultimately placing eighth in the Girls 11 category. Charlie Donaldson (Girls 9), Noah Cornbill (Boys 10) and Oliver Cornbill (Boys 10) were the only other Canadian riders to make it past the qualification rounds, with Donaldson racing the quarterfinals and the Cornbill brothers making it to the 1/8 Finals.
Gran Fondo – Individual Time Trial
Several Canadians raced to top-10 finishes at the Gran Fondo Individual Time Trial, with Joël Katz (Men 65-69) and Bruce Bird (Men 55-59) in seventh place, Serghei Maximenco (Men 45-49) in eighth and Diane Bomans (Women 55-59) and Zack Morris (Men 35-39) finishing ninth.

DAY 4 HIGHLIGHTS: 2023 UCI CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

A para-cycling track silver medal was added to Canada’s tally at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, GBR, on Aug. 6, along with fierce competition in BMX racing, the mountain bike cross-country marathon (XCM), road and track.

Kate O’Brien of Calgary, AB, brought home second place in the Women C4 500m Time Trial to add to her growing hardware collection from the event, which includes silver medals from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and 2022 Para-cycling Track World Championships, as well as gold from the 2020 Para-cycling Track World Championships. She crossed the finish line just 2.175 seconds short of winner Kadeena Cox (GBR) and her time of 35.961 seconds.

“It feels amazing to win a medal,” commented O’Brien. “Training is always a mobile plan: this is the best performance I’ve had in the last three competitions so I think training is in the right direction. Still have some things to work on but this has given some good information on what we need to hit a bit. My plan moving forward is to have some stable training and therapy, get some equipment fitting and come back to win gold next year.”

Track
A full day of track competition was also held at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. Sarah Van Dam of Victoria, BC, placed seventh in the Women Elite Elimination Race, while Kelsey Mitchell of Sherwood Park, AB, finished ninth in the Women Elite Keirin.

Chris Ernst of Kitchener, ON, was ninth in the Men Elite Individual Pursuit, followed by Michael Foley of Milton, ON, in 17th and Carson Mattern of Ancaster, ON, in 18th. Consistent efforts in the Scratch Race (5th), Tempo Race (7th), Elimination Race (4th) and Points Race (15th) landed Dylan Bibic of Mississauga, ON, 13th overall in the Men Elite Omnium.

Road

Road continued with the Elite Men tackling a 271.1km road race. Canada’s two finishers were Guillaume Boivin of Montreal, QC, in 36th place and Nickolas Zukowsky of Sainte-Lucie-des-Laurentides, QC, in 40th.

Mountain Bike XCM
Elite National Team athletes also tackled the mountain bike XCM, with Haley Smith of Uxbridge, ON, leading for the women (15th) followed by Maghalie Rochette (22nd) of Saint-Adèle, QC, and Andrew L’Esperance of Halifax, NS, leading for the men (34th).

BMX Racing
The BMX Racing World Challenge held its first day of competition, which is open to riders eight and above. Hugo Donais was the only Canadian to successfully make it through seven rounds, ultimately placing seventh in the Cruiser Men 40-44 category.

Tomorrow will see the continuation of the BMX Challenge, track, para-cycling track and Gran Fondo events. After the conclusion of the BMX Freestyle Park Men Elite Qualification were delayed due to rain, the remaining heats wrapped up today in lieu of the semi-finals. Jeffrey Whaley of Montreal, QC, is scheduled to ride in tomorrow’s finals.

DAY 3 HIGHLIGHTS: 2023 UCI CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Canadian athletes left it all on the line as competition continued at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, GBR, on Aug. 5 in BMX freestyle, track and para-cycling track, mountain bike downhill and road.

Jeffrey Whaley of Montreal, QC, posted an impressive score of 71.30 in the Elite Men BMX Freestyle Park Qualifier, currently sitting fourth for the day and indicating good things to come in tomorrow’s semi-finals.

“[The 2022 World Championships] didn’t go as planned last year so I was kind of nervous coming back and actually pulling both my runs,” said Whaley. “I pulled my first one and it was alright, I knew I could fix a couple things so I came in my second run pretty confident. I just wanted to make sure everything was clean and I finished my run perfectly like I wanted it and right after it started raining, so it was perfect for me.”

Tokyo 2020 Olympic medallists Kelsey Mitchell of Sherwood Park, AB, and Lauriane Genest of Lévis, QC, took the first step in their quests for the Women Elite Keirin rainbow jersey, qualifying for tomorrow’s quarter-finals through Round 1 and the Round 1 Repechage, respectively.

Both Canadian entrants in the Men Elite Sprint, Ryan Dodyk of Lloydminster, AB, and Nick Wammes of Bothwell, ON, successfully made it through the qualification round. They fell to their opponents by the slimmest of margins in the 1/16 Finals, Dodyk to Jeffrey Hoogland (NED) by 0.088 seconds and Wammes to Kohei Terasaki (JPN) by 0.055 seconds.

After yesterday’s qualification, The Women Elite Team Pursuit squad – comprised of Erin Attwell of Victoria, BC, Ariane Bonhomme of Gatineau, QC, Maggie Coles-Lyster of Maple Ridge, BC, and Sarah Van Dam of Victoria, BC – faced Italy in Round 1 but were short of the opposing team’s time of 4:11:342 by 15.165 seconds.

In para-cyling track, Tarek Dahab of Belœil, QC, placed 13th in the Men C2 7.5km Scratch Race.

Tomorrow, Canadian track and para-cycling track athletes will also contest the women’s elimination race and time trial, and men’s individual pursuit, sprint and omnium.

Gracey Hemstreet Nabs Top-20 Mountain Bike Downhill Finish
Mountain bike downhill concluded today with the Elite Finals. The top finishers representing the maple leaf were Gracey Hemstreet of Sechelt, BC, placing 14th for the women and Forrest Riesco of Gibsons, BC, placing 21st for the men. Mountain bike continues tomorrow with the cross-county marathon.

Road Racing Kicks Off With Juniors
Isabella Holmgren of Orillia, ON, conquered 70km for a fantastic eighth-place finish to lead the Canadians in the Women Junior Road Race. The top finisher in red and white for the men was Charles Bergeron of Oakville, ON, who came 49th. Tomorrow it will be the Elite Men’s turn at the road race.

DAY 2 HIGHLIGHTS: 2023 UCI CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Canadian National Cycling Team won its first medals at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, GBR, on Aug. 4 with two silvers and two bronze in mountain bike (MTB) downhill and the Gran Fondo. Athletes also took part in track and para-cycling track events.

Three Junior Men in the MTB Downhill Top 10
Bodhi Kuhn (Rossland, BC) won Canada’s first medal of the week with a time of 4:31.145, just 0.418 seconds behind the Junior Men winner Henri Kiefer (GER). Tegan Cruz (Pemberton, BC) and Dane Jewett (Squamish, BC) both joined Kuhn in the top 10, placing sixth and eighth respectively. Sophi Lawrence (Whistler, BC) was Canada’s top contender in the Junior Women category, placing 14th.

Eight Canadian riders secured their ticket for tomorrow’s final in the Elite field. Gracey Hemstreet (Sechelt, BC) and Emmy Lan (Comox, BC) will be lining up on the women’s side, while Finn Iles (Pemberton, BC), Mark Wallace (Duncan, BC), Anthony Poulson (Bromont, QC), Forrest Riesco (Gibsons, BC), Kirk McDowall (Port Moody, BC) and Jakob Jewett (Squamish, BC) will represent the maple leaf on the men’s side.

Women Team Pursuit Gears up for Round 1
Erin Attwell (Victoria, BC), Ariane Bonhomme (Gatineau, QC), Maggie Coles-Lyster (Maple Ridge, BC) and Sarah Van Dam (Victoria, BC), came eighth in the Women Elite Team Pursuit Qualifier with a time of 4:19.208, 8.875 seconds off of leader Great Britain. They will race against Italy in tomorrow’s Round 1. Coles-Lyster lined up again in the evening to race the Women Elite Scratch Race, where she earned another eighth place.

After placing sixth in their qualifiers on Thursday, the Men Elite Team Pursuit won their heat against Germany but their time of 3:50:079 was not enough to bring them to the finals, ultimately putting them in sixth place.

Pemble and Dahab on a Mission for the Omnium Title
Mel Pemble (Victoria, BC) was first to stop the clock with a time of 13.138 in the Women C3 200m Sprint, in which she set the world record in 2022, while Tarek Dahab of Beloeil, QC, scored the third best time in the Men C2 200m Sprint. Counting towards the Omnium cumulative results, these times put both athletes in good position for a shot to earn the world title.

“I’m super happy with the placings and how it earned me some good points for the Omnium,” Pemble told the Canadian Paralympic Committee. “I was super excited for this event and the legs were a bit shaky. I’ll try and keep the stress and energy level down over the next day before my next race on Sunday.’’

Three Medals for Canada in the Gran Fondo
Gran Fondo riders Esta Bovill (Women 45-49), Pascal Herve (Men 55-59) and Michelle Gagnon (Women 19-34) added three medals to Canada’s count, winning a silver and two bronze respectively. Also earning top-10 finishes were Bruce Bird, who placed fifth in the Men 55-59 Gran Fondo, and Nathalie Champagne, who placed seventh in the Women 55-59 Medio Fondo.

DAY 1 HIGHLIGHTS: 2023 UCI CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Canadian National Cycling Team was off to a busy start at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, GBR, on Aug. 3 with events in mountain bike downhill, para-cycling track and track.

Canada Headed to Round 1 of the Men Elite Team Pursuit

Dylan Bibic of Mississauga, ON, Michael Foley of Milton, ON, Derek Gee of Ancaster, ON, and Mathias Guillemette of Trois-Rivières, QC, came sixth in the Men Elite Team Pursuit Qualifier, 4.364 seconds off top-finishing Denmark (3:46.816). Their efforts earned Canada a spot in tomorrow’s Round 1 against Germany.

“I’m incredibly satisfied with this morning’s performance,” said Gee. “I think we rode a clean, well-executed ride with still some room for improvements going into the rounds. With only one team pursuit a day, we’re always going for our best possible time. The better you qualify, the better you’re set up for the next rides. Not only is riding more than once at competition always the goal, but to come top eight is crucial points for Olympic qualifying.”

Bibic also placed sixth in the Men Elite Scratch Race in defense of his 2022 World Champion title. He was unable to retain the top spot against a fierce field ultimately won by William Tidball (GBR).

The 2023 Tissot UCI Track Nations Cup Milton silver medal team – Lauriane Genest of Montreal, QC, Kelsey Mitchell of Sherwood Park, AB, and Sarah Orban of Calgary, AB – kept pace in the morning’s Women Elite Team Sprint Qualification, finishing a scant 1.276 seconds off leader Great Britain’s time of 46.072 for seventh. However, in Round 1 their time of 47.656 seconds fell short of the 45.988 laid down by Germany, who eventually went on to win the final.

In the Men Elite Team Sprint, James Hedgcock of Ancaster, ON, Tyler Rorke of Baden, ON, and Nick Wammes of Bothwell, ON, finished a mere 0.003 seconds shy of qualification. There will also be no Canadians moving forward from the Women Elite Individual Pursuit Qualifiers, despite commendable efforts including Maggie Coles-Lyster’s seventh-place finish.

Keely Shaw Locks In Chance for Gold

Keely Shaw of Midale, SK was the only Canadian to make the top four in the Individual Pursuit Qualifiers held Aug. 2. She will race for the rainbow jersey in the Women’s C4 Individual Pursuit Finals against Emily Petricola (AUS) on Aug. 7.

Downhill Kicks Off with Junior Qualifiers

Six Juniors who call British Columbia home successfully stamped their ticket to tomorrow’s downhill finals. Fernie’s Joy Attalla will be the sole women’s representative, while the men will be sending Tegan Cruz (Pemberton), Max Halchuck (Kelowna), Dane Jewett (Squamish), Bodhi Kuhn (Rossland) and Jon Mozell (North Vancouver).

WHISTLER CROWNS FOUR NEW CANADIAN ENDURO CHAMPIONS

Ottawa, ON (July 31, 2023) – Crankworx and the Canadian Enduro League played host to the first sanctioned Canadian Enduro Championships since 2019 on July 30, 2023, crowning new national champions in the discipline in Whistler, BC.

 Three-time Olympic alpine and freestyle skier Brittany Phelan took the lead in the Women Elite’s race, racing four of the five fastest stages in her category, to finish 36.8 seconds in front of Miranda Miller.

 “It feels awesome. I’ve always been second but today I knew how to get the lead after the Blackcomb descent and I just wanted to keep it together and settle for a good race,” said Phelan. “I felt like I rode fast and smooth all day, I pedalled as fast as I possibly could on every single stage and I feel like I didn’t really leave anything out there. Whatever the result was in the end, I was going to be stoked with it because I was stoked with my ride and the effort I put in today.”

Going into the race, there were high expectations for Emmy Lan (U21 Women), Jesse Melamed (Elite Men) and Rhys Verner (Elite Men) after stellar finishes in the 2023 UCI Mountain Bike World Series. Lan took the win in the U21 Women’s field, while Melamed and Verner battled it out on the trails, with Melamed ultimately finishing 21.20 seconds in front of Verner.

In the U21 Men’s category, Wei Tien Ho was the fastest rider of the day, scoring the best time in all five stages with a total time of 39:27.02 – a time that would have been competitive amongst the Elite Men.

CANADIAN ENDURO TITLES UP FOR GRABS IN WHISTLER

Ottawa, ON (July 27, 2023) – U21 and Elite athletes are on their way to Whistler, BC, for the first sanctioned Canadian Enduro Championships since 2019, to be held on July 30, 2023.

“We are thrilled to head to Whistler to mark the return of the sanctioned Canadian Enduro Championships as a part of the world renowned Crankworx World Tour,” said Josh Peacock, Cycling Canada Director of Events and Marketing. “This event represents an exciting collaboration between Cycling Canada, the Canadian Enduro League and Crankworx to crown the nation’s best on some of the world’s most challenging terrain.”

Well known on the international scene, Mountain Bike World Series Enduro World Cup medallists Jesse Melamed (Elite Men), Rhys Verner (Elite Men), Emmy Lan (U21 Women), Elly Hoskin (U21 Women) and Lily Boucher (U21 Women) will be on hand to battle it out for the maple leaf jersey in their respective categories.
