Our presence in the main Canadian markets allows us to help them reach their objectives whilst strengthening our commitment to promote healthy lifestyles throughout the country.”

HALEY SMITH WINS BRONZE AT NOVE MESTO WORLD CUP

Nove Mesto, Czech Republic (May 27, 2019) – Haley Smith (Norco Factory) took the first World Cup podium result of her career with a third place in the Elite women on Sunday at the second round of the Mountain Bike World Cup in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic.

Smith’s result moved her up to eighth in the overall standings from 13th. In the men’s race, Canadian champion Peter Disera (Norco Factory) struggled after finishing seventh on Friday in the short track event and could only manage 49th. Leandre Bouchard (Pivot-OTE) was the top Canadian man in 39th, after working his way back from a flat tire and gaining 90 positions.

“I’ve always liked this course,” said Smith, “It really feels like mountain biking, it’s got flow and is about being a bike rider, and that’s what I did; I just found the flow and I went for it. I think I was 15 seconds out [of top-5] heading out on the last lap, and [national coach] Dan [Proulx] yelled seven seconds, and I thought ‘I can do seven seconds’. I knew I just had to give it everything I had, because I would regret it if I didn’t.”

In other results, Canadian Under-23 men’s national champion Sean Fincham (Norco Factory Team) finished sixth on Saturday, moving him up from tenth to seventh in the overall standings. Canadian Junior riders had some bad luck in their races, with Emilly Johnston (Pendrel Racing) crashing while in the lead group of the women’s race and recovering for 13th place, while world number one ranked Carter Woods (Rocky Mountain Factory) hit a post while battling for first place and dropped back to finish tenth.

CANADA WINS 7 MEDALS AT PARA ROAD WORLD CUP #2

Ostend, Belgium (May 20, 2019) – Canada added three road race medals on the weekend to the four it had already won in the time trial events at Round 2 of the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup in Ostend, Belgium. Shelley Gautier took her second silver medal in the women’s T1 division, while Joey Desjardins (men’s H3) and Tristen Chernove (men’s C2) each took bronze. Over the course of four days, Canada won five silver medals and two bronze; one more than a week earlier at the first World Cup of the season.

Head Para coach Sebastien Travers said, “It was a very good competition for our squad here in Belgium.  All national team athletes were able to convert results into UCI points, which are critical for our Paralympic qualification. This is promising as these results came from both our Elite national team athletes and our development group in the Next Gen program. We are leaving Belgium with two World Cup leaders in Tristen and Shelley, who are looking forward to defend their titles in Baie-Comeau.”

HALEY SMITH FINISHES 9TH AT ALBSTADT WORLD CUP

Albstadt, Germany (May 20, 2019) – Canadian mountain bikers Haley Smith (Norco Factory) and Peter Disera (Norco Factory) each had career best performances on Sunday at the opening round of the World Cup in Albstadt, Germany. Smith cracked the top ten, finishing ninth in a world-class field of women, while Disera took nineteenth in the elite men’s competition.

“I have so many demons at Albstadt,” said Smith. “I’ve DNF’d before, and I was 50th last year. My goal today was to just beat the course and ride for myself, and I’m really proud that I did that. I knew I just had to be patient and ride to my own pace, because Albstadt is a race of attrition. I stayed calm and just picked people off the whole race.”

“After the short track on Friday I landed myself a second row start, so before I knew it, I was top-10. It wasn’t a great physical performance, and I had to fight hard mentally to stay in it.  It was a tough day all around, and when the skies opened up it got real wild out there,” said Disera.

CARTER WOODS FINISHES SECOND AT UCI MTB JUNIOR SERIES

Albstadt, Germany (May 19, 2019) – Canadian riders finished in the top ten at all races on the opening day of competition at the Mountain Bike World Cup in Albstadt, Germany. Carter Woods (Rocky Mountain Factory) had the top result of the day, finishing second in the Junior men’s race, part of the international UCI Junior Series. Emilly Johnston (Pendrel Racing) was eighth in the Junior women’s field, while in the Under-23 men’s World Cup race, Sean Fincham (Norco Factory) was tenth.

“The three of us were riding together and I put in a few attacks because I didn’t want it to come down to a sprint,” explained Woods. “Right before the final corners, we were sprinting side by side, and I got pushed into the metal barricades. When we hopped back on our bikes, his handlebars were straight and mine were twisted, so that was it. It’s pretty cool [to have this series], it’s motivating. I felt good during the race, it was just a little bit of bad luck.”

“It was my first time starting at the front, on the second row, which was pretty exciting,” said Fincham. “I was able to sit in the top ten and hang out for most of the race. Attacks started to go with three laps to go, and I couldn’t quite hold on.”

CANADA WINS FOUR SILVER MEDALS ON OPENING DAYS OF THE PARA ROAD WORLD CUP #2

After winning a total of six medals last weekend, Team Canada started off strong at the second Para Road World Cup, winning four silver medals in the Individual Time Trial. On Friday, Tristen Chernove of Cranbrook, BC placed second in the men’s C2 category, with Ross Wilson of Edmonton taking the same spot in the C1 category.

Competition continues on Saturday and Sunday with the road races for all categories.

“In the past I’ve started too fast and then faded at the end,” said Ross Wilson. “I made a conscious effort to negative split the race. Eight tenths is so close, especially after a training injury less than four weeks ago.”

“We got off to a great start,” said Sebastien Travers, Para Head Coach at Cycling Canada. “The most encouraging result was having three riders in the top eight of the highly competitive H3 class, with Charles second, Alex fifth and Joey eighth.”
