MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP IN MONT-STE-ANNE HELD THIS WEEKEND
Canada sends very large delegation to the only MTB World Cup in North America
(Ottawa, ON – August 8, 2013) Cycling Canada is sending a very large team to compete at the 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup stop in Mont-Sainte-Anne, QC, with the presentation of both cross country and downhill races. The weekend races are the only North American races of the 2013 World Cup calendar.
A total of 95 Canadian athletes – 67 in cross country and 28 in downhill (50 under the National Team outfit) – will be racing over the weekend at this favorite World Cup stops on the calendar for many riders from across the World. The event, organized by GESTEV, is one of the longest running event in the history of mountain bike. Throughout the week plenty of mountain bike and cultural activities are planned around the World Cup races.
The cross-country races will all be held on Saturday, while the Downhill seeding runs will take place Friday, with the Finals showcased on Sunday. Every race will happen at the Mont-Sainte-Anne ski resort, located near Quebec City.
It is expected that both Canadian Champions, Emily Batty of Brooklin, ON (Trek Factory Team) and Derek Zandstra of Trenton, ON (SCOTT-3 Rox Racing) participate in the event with their professional trade teams, along with other big names in mountain biking such as three-time Olympian Goeff Kabush (SCOTT-3 Rox Racing) of Courtenay, BC. 2011 World Champion Catharine Pendrel (Team LUNA Pro) of Kamloops, BC is registered for the race, and will make her return to the World Cup competition after nursing a broken collar bone.
Two-time Canadian Champion Max Plaxton of Victoria, BC (Sho-Air-Cannondale) will be racing at the event, along with Raphael Gagné of Québec, who will race in front of his home fans, friends and family.
Among the group, we also find both recent Canada Games Champions Frédérique Trudel (Breakeyville, QC) and Léandre Bouchard (Alma, QC). Bouchard is a triple medallist with Team Québec at the Canada Games and won the eliminator Canadian title, while Trudel also won the cross country Canadian title in the espoirs (U23) category in the cross country race.
The event at Mont-Sainte-Anne will also feature the downhill discipline, and Canadian riders will be looking to post good results. Steve Smith of Casssidy, BC (Devinci Global Racing) and Mark Wallace of Duncan, BC (Devinci Global Racing) are expected to race on home soil, both of them who won the Canadian Championships title earlier this summer. Both Smith and Wallace have been posting strong result this season, with Smith stepping twice on the World Cup podium. Micayla Gatto of North Vancouver, BC (Cycling BC) is the current Canadian Champion, and will race over the weekend.
