Four Canadian athletes climb on World Cup podiums; Plaxton rides to career best

(Mont-Sainte-Anne, QC – June 24, 2012) The 2012 UCI World Cup stop in Mont-Sainte-Anne ended today, and Canadian athletes came out of the weekend with two victories in women races, and a career first Top 5 for Olympic-bound Max Plaxton.

The reigning World Champion Catharine Pendrel of Kamloops, BC (Team Luna Pro) jumped on the opportunity to show off her rainbow jersey for the first time on Canadian soil, winning the women’s cross-country mountain bike race on Saturday.

Pendrel made a strong come back from the second place during the race to overtake her Luna teammate Georgia Gould in the last lap. Canadian Marie-Hélène Prémont of Chateau-Richer was third, stepping for the first time on the podium this season.

With the victory, Pendrel also takes the World Cup Leader jersey, taking the lead of the World Cup standings.

Named along with Pendrel to the 2012 Canadian Olympic team, Emily Batty (Subaru-Trek) finished in sixth position.

Two-time Canadian Champion Max Plaxton (Specialized Racing USA), which had a ninth place at the last World Cup in La Bresse, France, posted his career best result on the UCI World Cup Tour, placing fifth in the Elite Men’s race. Plaxton has been improving race after race, and could create a surprise at the Olympic Games coming up this summer.

In the women junior race, the two-time Canadian Champion and two-time Canada Cup Champion Frédérique Trudel of Breakyville, QC rode to her first-ever UCI World Cup victory. Trudel rode 15.48 kilometres in 1:18.30.

In the men junior race, Marc-Antoine Nadon, also a two-time Canadian Champion, raced to the second place, and he also secured his first UCI World Cup podium.
