DAY 7 HIGHLIGHTS: 2023 UCI CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Canadian National Cycling Team earned its second rainbow jersey and another bronze medal on Aug. 9 at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, GBR.
Para-Road Cycling
2022 Time Trial and Road Race silver medallist in the Men T1 category, Nathan Clement, won his first-ever world title in the Individual Time Trial. The West Vancouver, BC, native secured the rainbow jersey after crossing the line 7.05s in front of Jianxin Chen (CHI), with a total time of 18:50.35m.
Shelley Gautier of Niagara Falls, ON, won her first medal of the 2023 World Championships, securing bronze in the Women T1 Road Time Trial. Charles Moreau (Victoriaville, QC), who had won the silver medal in the 2022 Individual Time Trial, was close to the podium with a fourth-place finish in the Men H3 category, while Matthew Kinnie (Men H2) of Riverview, NB, raced his way to fifth and Kara Douville (Women H4), of Calgary, AB, ended in ninth.
The mountain bike squad comprised of Isabella Holmgren (Junior Women) of Orillia, ON, Marin Lowe (Junior Women) of Squamish, BC, Ian Ackert (Junior Men) of Severn, ON, Emilly Johnston (U23 Women) of Comox, BC, Owen Clark (U23 Men) of King City, ON, and Gunnar Holmgren (Elite Men) of Orillia, ON, had a great showing in the Cross-country Mixed Team Relay. They finished in fourth position, just a second away from the bronze medal ultimately clinched by Denmark and 42s away from the winning team of Switzerland and its time of 1:05:45h.
BMX freestyle flatland competition continued with the Elite Men semi-finals, where Jean William Prévost of Montréal, QC, scored 84.50, which earned him fifth place and a spot in tomorrow’s finals.

It was the last day of racing at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. Only two Canadian riders were in action, with Mathias Guillemette (Trois-Rivières, QC) lining up in the Men Elite Points Race, earning himself a sixth-place finish despite a crash. Maggie Coles-Lyster of Maple Ridge, BC, was Canada’s female representative in the Omnium, where she placed seventh in the Scratch Race, 13th in the Elimination Race, 14th in the Points Race, 20th in the Tempo Race finishing 15th overall.

Road
In the U23 Individual Time Trial, Michael Leonard of Oakville, ON, sat in the hot seat with his time of 44:29.71m, ultimately finishing in 10th place, 1:29.25m behind winner Lorenzo Milesi (ITA). Tristan Jussaume (Contrecoeur, QC) ended the race in 26th place.

Daisy Kettle (Girls 15), Rhyan Barfoot (Girls 16) and Victoria Dubé (Girls 16) were Canada’s top contenders in the fourth day of the BMX Racing Challege, with all three reaching the quarter final.
