OTTAWA, ON (April 28, 2026) – Cycling Canada is thrilled to acknowledge the Government of Canada’s Spring Economic Statement confirming new funding to support the growth and long-term development of sport across the country. The newly announced playground to podium funding represents a major contribution to sport in a funding landscape that has remained largely unchanged since 2005.
Starting in 2026-2027, $755 million is to be allocated over the next five years, with roughly $118 million being promised on an annual basis afterwards. In an effort to involve more Canadians in sport, the largest portion of the funding, $660 million, will directly support the investment in a strong and safe sport system to grow participation among children and youth nationwide. The remaining funding will contribute $50 million over five years to bring more world-class events to Canada. With $45 million over five years and $8 million ongoing, dedicated to high performance sport programming to ensure athletes can consistently train and perform at a world class level.
“Today’s announcement marks a transformational and historic moment for Canadian sport. This investment enables us to strengthen pathways and elevate what is possible at every stage of cycling from grassroots participation to world‑class, high‑performance excellence,” highlighted Cycling Canada CEO Mathieu Boucher. “The Government of Canada’s playground to podium investment aligns directly with our strategic plan by expanding access, increasing participation, putting more Canadians on podiums, and bringing more major international events to Canada. This funding provides the momentum we need to accelerate our vision, grow our sport, and create lasting impact for communities across the country.”
This funding will directly advance our mission to share our passion for the sport and inspire more Canadians to ride. It will strengthen programming across disciplines, while expanding access and opportunity from grassroots, to development through to high-performance programming. The support announced today will also enhance our ability to secure and host major international events in Canada; an integral aspect of Cycling Canada’s vision to engage and inspire Canadians.
Cycling Canada extends our appreciation to the Government of Canada and the Secretary of State for Sport, Adam van Koeverden, for their belief and investment in the Canadian sport system. This funding increase reflects a shared commitment to strengthening access to sport for all Canadians.
