CYCLING CANADA RELEASES SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY WITH RACING TO ZERO

OTTAWA, ON (April 22, 2026) – Cycling Canada is proud to launch our Environmental Sustainability Strategy, a long‑term framework that embeds environmental responsibility into the governance, operations, and culture of Canadian cycling. Developed in alignment with the IOC, COC, UCI, and United Nations best practices, the strategy positions Cycling Canada to become  a leader in climate action within the Canadian sport system by 2040.

By integrating sustainability into how we govern, travel, train, and compete, Cycling Canada is working to reduce the overall carbon footprint our sport. This commitment aligns with our 2020–2030 Strategic Plan and reinforces our responsibility to lead with integrity and support the wellbeing of our community.

“This strategy is about taking responsibility for the impact our sport has on the environment and using Cycling Canada’s platform to drive meaningful change,” said Josh Peacock, Director of Business Development & Communications at Cycling Canada. “By embedding sustainability into how we govern, travel, host events, and engage communities, we’re committing to long‑term action that goes beyond targets on paper. Canadian cycling has an opportunity to lead by example, and this strategy gives us a clear framework to reduce our footprint, inspire our community, and contribute to a healthier future for the sport we love.”

Using IOC‑aligned methodologies, Cycling Canada assessed its areas of control and influence across organizational operations, national teams, and events. In 2025, total emissions were measured at 1,700 tonnes CO₂e (carbon dioxide equivalent), establishing a baseline for future reduction targets. Cycling Canada’s sustainability efforts will focus on three strategic pillars. First, we will embed sustainability throughout the organization to drive action and accountability in reducing our environmental impact. Second, we will ensure our events are planned and delivered responsibly, with an emphasis on measuring and reducing their footprint. Third, we will inspire communities across Canada to engage in sustainability while expanding access to impactful programs. For more information on the objectives and actions within each pillar, please visit our official environmental sustainability report

Cycling Canada extends sincere thanks to Racing to Zero and the Canadian Olympic Committee for their support through the NSO Sustainability Pilot Project, as well as to the IOC Olympic Solidarity Programme for enabling the development of this strategy.

“It was a pleasure working with Cycling Canada throughout the COC’s NSO Sustainability Pilot Program and we are really pleased with the outcomes of the project together. Cycling Canada is now well equipped to continue along this journey, following a clear strategic roadmap towards more sustainable operations and events and we are excited to see the positive impact that they can have over the coming years,” highlighted Oliver Scholfield, Executive Director, Racing To Zero.
